    There is a card named [Horseshoe Crab] that has the [Crab] creature type. Horseshoes Crabs are not crabs or even crustaceans; they are chelicerates, more closely related to arachnids like spiders, ticks, and scorpions.

      @RedBobcatGames horseshoe crabs are amazing animals. Their blood is bright blue and completely unique in the animal kingdom. It is invaluable to the medical community and just one gallon is worth $60,000!

    • @j-rey-
      @j-rey- 14 днів тому

      @@SwedeRacerDCThey are the only surviving members of the order Xiphosura and you can only trace back their commonalities to other animals in the animal kingdom species tree back to the phylum Arthropoda, which you can subdivide into Insects, Crustaceans, Arachnids, and Chelicerata (which horseshoe crabs are a part of). So they are only similar to those animals in that they are athropods and we can't get any more specific than that in our description.
      I don't think there is a creature type as generic as "arthropod." Maybe "bug" is the most applicable 🤔. Although, crustaceans are also arthropods, so that is why some people consider crustaceans to be "bugs of the sea," and mtg has creature types more specific than "bug" when it comes to crustaceans, for example, "crab." So we really don't have a good creature type for horseshoe crabs that also don't cause issues when describing other creatures, like crustaceans 😆. So we would probably have to come up with a new creature type called "limulidae" or something 😂

    • @HanayomeK
      @HanayomeK 14 днів тому

      @PhoenicopterusR I feel like the reason we don't have it as Bug Creature Type is because it may be a patenting issue? Something like... using the term 'Bug' to attribute a type as a mechanic for a tabletop or video game. Though tbh it could just be that the word was avoided as it sounded to simplistic or maybe childish. Arthropod is too generic and includes things like crabs and shrimp, also, so I think... unless they're merging those too, it wouldn't make much sense to change the name to a broader spectrum. Since Insect already exists, and includes even myriapoda, it might just be easier to merge Spiders and Scorpions into the insect typing, rather than make a new one.
      I play Insect tribal and there's so many cool Spider cards I wanna play. Living Hive was changed from Elemental to Elemental Insect so idk why they can't just... change the name of a creature type that already has a lot of mixed support though...

    • @PhoenicopterusR
      @PhoenicopterusR 13 днів тому

      @HanayomeK my thought on it would be at least if they can group land faring arthropods together, it's should be distinct enough from the water arthropods that no one's really going to argue that much. The issue ultimately comes down to the fact that it's actually just wrong, it's like making a fox card and giving it the cat type when foxes are actually grouped in with dogs. Better yet, why not just separate the arthropods into their proper groups (insect, arachnid, myriapode, crab, lobster), then use arthropod as a batching term, á la Historic? That would make for better visual design and allow some design space for synergistic abilities and spells. Otherwise, if they're going to make non-insect arthropods insects, then they can make crabs and lobsters (homarids by association, too) into insects without issue.

Most cards under the "regional variant" art tag were alt-art censorship versions specifically for Mainland China from 5th to 8th edition, purely because of a old longtime rumor which went "morbid graphics (skeleton, gore, body horror, etc.) would 100% gets a game banned". For example, World of Warcraft had to replace ALL in-game BONES ON THE GROUND with placeholder cubes. 😂 While the truth is that there have been precisely zero laws/regulations about this. It's at best a rumor of some high official's personal opinion. These days we tend to prefer taxonomy based on evolutionary relationship, so things that convergently evolve to look and behave like insects wouldn't class as insects. Thus there can only be "insects" on one plane, unless there has been an insect planeswalker spreading insects to other worlds.
    Those mantis ants could theoretically be insects if the mantis arm things weren't legs. For example, if they're mandibles that have evolved articulation.
    According to The School, wasps would actually be ants, not bees - ants are more closely related.
    Bond Beetle appears to have two heads, so can't be an insect.
    Brain Weevil looks to have 8 legs?

      @SwedeRacerDC 14 днів тому

      @RedBobcatGames This is one of those words that I really don't care about if people get it right. I am not 100% sure, but I think there are a couple acceptable pronunciations and one may be more US based and the other more based on the Queen's English. I would easily accept that the first syllable sounds like Chit as in chit chat or Chitty Chitty bang bang. Or the Ch could sound more like a K and that first syllable sound more like Kite. I'm a pronunciation nerd, and I like when people either at least give it an honest try with an educated guess and maintain consistency or when they intentionally and sarcastically joke about it. When people just know it's hard and say something very off is where it starts to be a pet peeve lol. Like when people say Chip-Pull-Tay for Chipotle... But for this word, you could've said Charizard or Cinnabon or made a joke about how you think these are the weird dessert things that taco bell sells...(Cinna Twists or something like that). It gave me a good laugh to hear your approach of starting to sound it out and being like, nah that's a death sentence
