If you are in your 30-40s and you live with your parents it's suggests you yourself are not financially stable enough to live independently or your parents aren't enough to live without your contribution. If your parents live with you, then usually you're financially well-off enough to take care of them and yourself

Largely in part because of the economic strife faced and also because this has become almost tradition. These customs are then brought over to the US.
