Everything u said ~substitute CLUB ZANZIBAR~ Y Eye never went 2 the GARAGE is still beyond me, but my first night at ZANZ (HALLOWEEN 1982), SYLVESTER performed, the LADIES were plentiful & BEAUTIFUL, and THE VYBE was SURREAL! After being warned that Eye would think Eye was in PARADISE, what occurred from the moment Eye walked up those stairs, seems, in retrospect, prophetic 2 say the least because it is my understanding that ZANZIBAR was created as the official JERSEY SATELLITE of the PARADISE GARAGE. Eye left the US NAVY~ ROTA, SPAIN in JULY, 1984 largely due 2 the happenings in my Native region ~aka the Tri-State~ which, at the time, consisted of MR. MAGIC/MARLEY MARL ON WBLS & COOL DJ RED ALERT/CHUCK CHILLOUT ON WRKS (KISS) FM... BUT MORE THAN ANYTHING IT WAS ABOUT GETTING BACK 2 ZANZ!!! U could say Eye was HOUSE~SICK (although that phrase hadn't been coined yet! Lol!) Eye remember the ride home from Philly, where Eye was discharged from, when ALEEM~RELEASE YOURSELF came on the radio... Eye almost crashed!!! That was the moment Eye knew Eye was HOME!!! Couldn't get past the WALT WHITMAN fast enough~ over 2 78 & back home 2 JERZ! Eye have never regretted my decision, although CHAKA appeared at ZANZ while Eye was away ~ but Eye had many a NIGHT 2 REMEMBER @430 BROAD ST~NEWARK, NJ~ through to the early 90's. But Eye also missed the SHELTER after ZANZ closed :( Eye just wasn't aware of it bcause RAP/HIP-HOP had a firm grip on the TRI-STATE @ that moment in time... P.S. This is one of the best comment sections Eye have read in a LONG time. People can have a discussion that is informative, engaging and enlightening on UA-cam after all! Lol! The “Whatcha Gonna Do For Me” album that these tracks came from is one of the best albums ever recorded. Every song is amazing, and even after 30+ years it is still one of my very favorite. If you haven’t heard this album yet, pls check it out. Chaka is the best!!
Bro if you could've caught Club SHELTER in like the early 1990's then you would've caught the END (It lasted til about 95 ,in my opinion) there were still people who partied at PARADISE GARAGE still coming out but less and less as the years went by. Even ZANZIBAR (in NJ where I'm from ) was still in That Spirit of the early years for a while, DJ Tony Humphries was still holding that candle so to speak.....BUT, TIME WAITS FOR NO MAN......Zanz fell too. Keep this type of music in you mind, body and soul and you'll stay young for a very very very long TIME, peace.

This is one of my all time favorite club jams. I just saw Chaka, Friday at Westbury. She can still carry those notes. Unfortunately, she didn't perform this.
What sets Chaka apart from a LOT of vocalists is her ability to jump up and down the register, with that tight phrasing, all within the same song lines. She has that jazz feel, that soul crooning, and that attack on those notes. Not until you perform as a vocalist both on stage and recording would you appreciate her skills...and she can hold those notes and work them...
For me,Whitney had a simple, honest, natural voice and wide range..She was from Newark, grew up in the church, yet had her demons like many of us do.Aretha is that lady who brought the soul, the blues, and endured much, bringing it out with her gift of song.
michael stanton I think Whitney's tone, clarity of sound, diction, inflections, projection, pitch were all flawless. She was just a phenomenal singer. Aretha ministers when she sings.....she touches the soul like no other can.
well,i was coming from a standpoint of someone who has performed, recorded, dealt with music,so when I said natural, those things you mentioned are right on point.Neither one of those women needed a studio to rock, and that's what really stands out with any performer. That stands for Both of them..
michael stanton I saw Whitney live, 3 times back in the late 80's and early 90's......she was simply phenomenal in live concert. Unbelievable voice and the ease in which she hit those notes back then was jaw dropping. No gimmicks, no auto tune....just pure voice. If I live to get 1,000 I will never forget that experience. Same goes for Aretha, I have seen her live 5 times, she never failed to stir the souls of the audience members. I watched her use her voice to cause people to shout in the the isles and start testifying. Chaka, I have never had the pleasure of seeing live but I heard from two people who did back in the 80's and they say she was unforgettable.
there are to many songs by chaka to say only one is my favorite... but.. this... is way up on the top of the list... and then to have it remixed like this.. oh hell yeah
