Nick and Val Simpson were and are the best writters, arrangers and producers for Ms Ross -- nobody else could help her sing like this -- perfecto for her voice
This song hit the charts 41 yrs ago... i still remember when this song came out on the radio..listening to that angelical voice and thinking who she was..what she look like...who she was..there were no computers..no mtv...no technology... u see i was born and raised in a country side here in Ponce P.R.... very country......we were living in very humble meanings back in those days...no cable only radio and the tv with the local channels...now im 60 yrs old and see this images the videos her performances..and cant help to think and go back to those memories..life was so different back then...i was just a kid..now im 60...and remember those days with sadness and nostalgia ....
Carlos! This is another Carlos also from Puerto Rico! Like you I was in our beloved island when I heard it on the radio and ran to the local record store to get the album. Like films sometimes new albums released would take time to arrive to our shores. Luckily it was there and this song became my anthem back in 1979. I agree, we had none of the technology we had now and we were very happy free folks, at least that's how I perceived it. To have the DJ play the song at the clubs was my definition of out of the body experience. Luckily here in NY they have this fabulous Disco event twice a year and makes me feel back in those days.Saludos.
Motown was the Elite Record Company created mainly for Black Artists as the mainstream radio stations refused to play Black Music back then and the white record companies who signed black artists had them over a barrel where they had to produce what they said and the contents signed often meant they received little or no monies much less royalties for their work while they were filling the pockets of scrupulous managers. Diana and the Supreme we're the No 1 artists for Motown as they appealed to the mainstream white people who rarely listened to Black Muxik muchless buy their muzik. Diana also had a long relationship with Berry Gordy thus cementing her role in the company and made sure she remained the lead singer for the Supreme although she wasn't the best singer it was Mary but Diana's looks complexion appealed to a wider audience and to make her position final she had a daughter her first child for Gordy Berry..hence the start of a talented and life long career. She is still performing she recently performed in London.. She has earned the rights to be called a DIVA although I say she is a GODDESS..quite a number of her recordings have been sampled by many Hip Hop and R@B artists and still is..Long and Respected artists she is in the industry
For People of a “certain age” (like me) this makes me think of how a great DJ could remix a song and control the whole Dance floor... simply simply simple brilliant!!
For sure! And going out to the clubs on the weekends and dancing was magical experience. Thanks to the many dj’s that helped to give us all that incredible experience back then. When you couldn’t get off the dance floor and danced until you got side cramps but kept going bc the music was soooo goooood! 🎶🕺🏻
My favorite part of this song is what I call "the cry." Yes, when love shows you who is the boss, you are dropped to your knees. When you can't turn those emotions on and off, control whatever moved in your soul, humility becomes your best friend. Yet, it is all fine and rewarding because in that humility is seen the beauty of loving and being loved. You then think: what was I doing? Let me wallow in this great magnificent thing. Of course!
I didn't know there was a place higher than heaven until I heard this remix! It actually redefines the song and elevates it to the highest level. This has always been my favorite Diana Ross song, and this remix demonstrates why it is so great. Those soaring vocals, the feminist vocals with a wink and nod. Who is the boss? Well, today it is Diana and Dimitri from Paris!!!!! No wonder Michael Jackson admired her so much. She has a freedom and sexiness in her voice that is exceptional. While my favorite may always be Donna Summer, this is supreme.
And Diana Ross doesn't need the strongest voice out there but she most definitely doesn't have a weak voice either , respectfully powerful enough to bring whatever song she sings across as only she can And one more note : Diana Ross is not a screamer but a singer ,while if you notice most of the real strong singers scream and holla to get you to like their songs Diana just plain sings her songs she classes her songs to death she doesn't need to scream she simply let her beatiful voice and phasing and timing carry her songs & one more note : non of the other singers that includes those real powerful singers do not have the versatility and depth Diana's voice possess enabling her to easily transverse most genre of music from r&b ,pop, soft rock, jazz, blues, big band, show tunes, etc all convincingly well enough to make the music charts very few come close , you're right very few if any comes close to Diana .
What I have always loved about this song is that, and this is a guess, love truly taught her who was the boss. That's why she can deliver this so well and it resonates for all of us, all these years, who have been there!
RIP Nickolas Ashford 🙏🏾 an Amazing Songwriter along with his Wife Valerie Simpson 😉🤗 A 🌟 Version and Upload, Thank You! Ms. Ross SANG THIS HIT SONG and SHE IS THE BOSS! 🎤🎹🎸🎺🎷🎵🎶
This was already great when Ashford And Simpson put their signature songwriting skill and musical arrangements, but to go and redo the classic into a whole new classic is RARE. In ANY time. This wasn't put together by any mere DJ or musician....it was the intuitive genius of both that gave this almighty burst of disco beauty into an all new sound and brassy style that will be around for as long as there is sound. I'm here for all of it children!! ((that's old school club talk, you youngin's))
Viernes 5 de Mayo 2023.... THE BOSS con Diana Ross, sigue escuchandose en el mundo. Aun recuerdo la Decada de los 70's. ¡Jamás será igual, a esos tiempos!
Spectacular song. Then you get DFP doing the remix. He went ALL THE WAY into the song and pulled out the best parts of the song and give us a whole new way to listen to it. The man clearly understands what a remix is supposed to sound like. The little details in every change of the measures...you can hear his understanding of the musicianship in this. He brings Diana Ross to new heights of greatness. No doubt Ashford & Simpson would have been proud (for those of you who don't know, they wrote and produced this timeless gem).
I agree. I hate remixes that sound like a totally different song. I usually find the original to be better. Now extended mixes were the best (back then). Just more of what made the song great to begin with!
The original was THE top disco hit in the USA EXACTLY 40 years ago, September 1979. Diana's acclaimed Concert at Caesar's Palace Las Vegas was also filmed in September 1979
Diana, she along with Whitney, r my 2 lovers of old school. The 2 can make my day when having a bad 1. RIP Whitney, keep it up Diana, luv the both of u, 4everlove
Francesco Pi thank you for posting. I literally grew up with Diana Ross. My mother played The Supremes when I was a child. When The Boss was released in 1979 helmed by the incomparable Ashford and Simpson, I was a teenager. Since, I have bought every one of Diana Ross’ albums. She is, in fact, my favorite artist - hands down. I have listened to the song and various versions hundreds of times. All this said, what stands out to me in Dimitri From Paris’ remix is Diana’s vocals. It appears he was able to isolate her vocals from the other tracks bringing them forward. The vocals are crisp and clear. One of the things about Diana’s singing has always been her clear enunciation of lyrics as reported by many reviewers/critics most often during her years with The Supremes. Now, there was nothing wrong with the original album version of The Boss, but Dimitri was able to not only bring her vocals upfront, but clear and pure. Further, he appears to have toned down the instrumentation tracks. The final product, in my opinion, created a beautiful balance between Diana’s voice and the music. I never thought the song could sound better, but he did it - all while adding a unique remix sound. It’s “Solid…Solid as a Rock”
Awesome remix. He knocked it out of the park. One of my all time favorites by Lady Di. This groove always gets me going. The Boss Album was a strong body of work produced and arranged by the legendary Nick and Val duo.
