- A short stream of videos played with SoloDallas Engineer, Dries Pottevijn while here in SoCal. These are brief video-pills further demonstrating the capabilities of our famed Schaffer Replica, SD50 guitar amplifier and Solo-71 pickups. Enjoy!
that grestch sound... so raw, so powerful, so Malcolm. And Fill... you've got the devil in your fingers and the blues in your soul!
I still can't accept the fact that Malcolm is gone. Whenever I see him, it takes some time for me to remember it. RIP Mal and George Young
you all probably dont give a damn but does someone know of a way to get back into an instagram account..?
I somehow forgot my account password. I love any assistance you can offer me.
@Jack Justice instablaster ;)
That's because he is still pushing forward without speeding up. Genius.
Brilliant cover of an AC/DC classic, played by two gifted and talented musicians, well played!!!
Brilliant playing and tones from the both of you!
I still cant believe Malcolm died so quickly after being diagnosed.
Im selfish to say this but I will miss Mal greatly. I still remember my early teens in the 90s holding a tennis racket and imitating his stance and facial expressions from Live in Donington!
Wasn't he diagnosed on the Black Ice tour? So like 9 years earlier?
P
Brilliant cover of an AC/DC classic, played by two very talented and gifted musicians.
He was diagnosed after the Black Ice tour, but he had been showing signs of dementia long before that, probably at the time of Stiff Upper Lip or even before, so much so that right at that time he changed a lot, both physically and in the face and in way of playing, he had never played with a 100% clean guitar sound before, and since Ballbreaker he hasn't stopped using it anymore. Besides that on the Stiff Upper Lip tour he already had a "look" a little lost, typical of the disease, as if he was confused
This was much more fun than I expected at first.
Great cover....of a great song by AC/DC....Excellent.
The Sprit of Malcolm is there ! Amazing !
Hey thanks!
You guys are brilliant, you did Mal so much justice in that.
Love you guys. What a sound you get. Thee Young Sound ! Fantastic Bravo. I could listen to you play guitar all day man. Wow. More more 😊👍🇬🇧

That was fantastic!
Great job guys, a big thumbs up and a sub to go along with it.. Dave 😎😎
One song I can’t unhear during this intro is Krokus - Long stick goes Boom
Holy fuck, boys. That was fucking wicked. Respect from Sydney Australia.
what a song.
So great!! Love from Austria🇦🇹
KILLER!!! you guys should do some covers of some other aussie bands like rose tattoo and coloured balls. George young produced the first rose tattoo lp around the same time they did powerage.
I just wanna play this Gretsch man xD
I freaking LOVE this guitar ^^
And what a beautifull tone right there!

Great job guys! 👊
Sounding fantastic as always Fil.
Sir!
This is kind a tribute to Mal!
il suono della gretsch è perfetto
Good job!
I love your solo which is obviously the live version, not the studio version. Do you know where there is an accurate tab of this version, or better still can you do a lesson on how to play it please?
I will. We're currently working on the studio version - which WILL surprises you, because of the people involved in it. I WILL do a tutorial on how to nail this live version! Thanks SO much for hanging around, Fil
@@SoloDallas Thank you so much! I love what you guys are doing, the covers, the equipment, the amazing sound and your attention to detail and accuracy. It looks like you're having a lot of fun as well! Awesome stuff!
AWESOME !!! 😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈
I AM MEZMORIZED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think it sounds like Angus used a 2203 or 2204 amp on the Powerage album. It sounds very distorted and they used that live at that time. Same with the If You Want Blood You’ve Got It album.
Not really. In fact, we went back and forth, trying everything - A JTM50 (our SD50) was an instant match. Couldn't get there with a 2203. They have that preamp fizz, not that raw crunch you hear on the album. If you want blood live album was actually not so distorted. Listen closely to Ang, he's very clean. There are indeed 2203's to be seen on stage, but we have proof that during that period, there was a JTM50 blasting backstage on a single cabinet, used for recording and FOH micing.
mats, we used to think that way, too. Now not anymore. On Powerage, *some* songs were probably done with Angus (and Angus only) using a 2203 - probably Marshall asked for it. But other than that, their old amplifiers were used and much likely, a new entry for AC/DC (that would never leave them for the rest of their career) was introduced: a JTM50 black flag. In our opinion, the JTM50 is the best guitar amplifier ever made - so much that we make the closest replicas of it today. When it comes to rock and roll, nothing - I say *nothing* beats a JTM50 properly configured. The live album "If You Want Blood, You'Ve Got It" is, in truth, an accomplished studio production of live shows happened in 1978 in Scotland. But much of those live performances was then re-played in the studio by the band, again using what they loved to use the most. So some songs are indeed played with at least one Marshall 2203 but many others, for a fact, were not.
SoloDallas Ok. But if you watch the film footage from Glasgow it matches the album very much. It’s almost impossible to play exactly the same twice and you can quite easily see that on film. I mailed Tony Platt some years ago about the Highway To Hell Album and he said Angus used both Master Volume and none Master Volume Marshalls on that.
I agree with Mats, they may have dubbed a thing or two, but the footage is there and the sound is so consistent.
I found this video in recommandation :
Thanks UA-cam you can make a great job 😍
Awesome, one of my fave songs!
What’s the blue wrapping around the Firebird‘s strings for?
We were playing quite loud, and the strings behind the bridge really tend to ring and feedback sometimes.
Awesome as always but you missed my favorite part of the solo! The little pull offs going into the 2nd part of the solo! Still great SD
Thanks bud! We had to keep it short
Superb job, especially without drums/bass.
10 sur 10 trop bien !!!!! merci...........
Awsome good job
Hi! Did you get my Facebook message? Another great vid!
Awesome Fil!!!
Great sounds, but the feel and detail in Malcolm's part is missing.
RichardTreehorn maybe it’s because he (Dries) isn‘t Mal ;)
Nice gear!! You running you mic pres direct to your interface to your DAW ? Sounds good man!!
Wauwww!!!
Excellent + 2
But other wise sounds amazing!
Not being mean at all i just noticed that the SG was a little sharp in the beginning i think.
How important are the heavy gauge strings to get Malcolms sound. He used 52s or thicker right?
John, for us, it was very important. Even Malcolm said it himself. Number one, he needed it to keep the band in tune (it's so easy to go out of tune with these guitars, especially during live takes). Additionally and maybe even more importantly, Malcolm was clean-dirty (this is how they called this type of sound). So, with clean-ish guitars, the bigger gauge you can go, the bigger the sound of the guitar - which was much needed in the case of Mal. *HE* was supposed to lead the rhythm, drive the band - he was the maestro, the director. You know this. Hence, he needed to have a big, clean sound but punchy at the same time. So he needed a guitar like this one with big strings. He went .52 and wound G, as far as we know.
Is it possible to get a tone which is close to AC/DC's with Marshall DSL 5C amp?
Awesome playing BTW!
Yes, use the classic gain channel and set the gain high if you are below 5 on the master volume and decrease the gain the more you crank the master volume.
Very tasty :-)
Is that a mint JTM50?! Where do you find all this dream gear?
eGay! MUST look for months; then you will find stuff. MUST be able to pull the trigger when it's the right moment etc.
A clean 1967 black flag JTM50... That has to be somewhat valuable. Nice to see how you bring vintage gear to use! Keep rocking! 🤘
Tremendous video once again. Quick question: Would adding a 5000pF switchable bright cap to my marshall dsl40c help give it more crunch and hollowness like angus back in the old days? Per your suggestion I know upgraded to the g12-65 and love it but can't have greenbacks due to the wattage and single speaker capacity. I personally love angus' tone on the solos- problem child, school days, little lover, stick around all very much so but still love the aspects of the highway to hell and back in black albums. I saw in some of your old articles you mentioned that specific bright cap being put in super leads and possibly modding other amps with it just wondering if I could do the same to get more of that aggressive hollow punch he has in problem child. Thanks and cheers Fil!
Jacob Kitzy Here no bright cap was used for both amps. Actually I don't like it, almost never use one.
Thanks, do you have any tips to get that problem child type tone like micing technique or any possible amp mods?. In some of Fil's older videos where he demoed a different boost labeled "my secret" he sounded like he had more of that older type tone where the guitar sounded more hollow and made much more clicking noise. I have the storm and the sd-71 by the way as well.
Jacob Kitzy that is all in micing technique and equalization techniques. Especially micing technique. There's only one way to learn this and that's just to go and try it - even a few 100's of an inch can give you already a very different tone. Experiment!
Of course the basic tone of the amp in the room must be already sounding close.
Thanks for your help Dries, great rhythm playing and I know you got the lead chops and vibrato too from some of Fil's other showcase videos. I am in the experiment phase I guess, I got a very close sound its just trying to express that through recording is obviously a difficulty. Do you recommend working with a condenser mic single, or sm57 single, or a combination. What is you/and or Fil's preference obviously each song/era has its own tips but if you were to make a tutorial video using the schaffer what pair/single would you use and in what general viscinity to start with.
Jacob Kitzy a 57 can sound nice but doesn't capture it very natural. If you don't have experience in putting 2 mics, you first have to learn that. It's not just throwing both in front of the cab and sum 'm up. You have to understand how mics will combine and experiment if that gains the result you had in mind.
Overall a large diapraghm condensor mic would be a good start... We like the AT4047 as a good entry mic - Plus a good mic preamp which is important. And all the post processing stuff as well of course.
That mouth… 😂🔥🎸
LOL (sound COMES FROM GUITAR FACES!!!!) 😂🔥🎸
Esecuzione Magistrale😁😁
Grazie!
Is that little different than Malcolm played on the gretsch?
So good to see you here Rita. It may be, bits and pieces
Fil! :) Roaring
Phil!!!!
What is a Marshall SD50 amp?
It's our rendition of a particular model of a '67-'68 Marshall JTM50 black flag amplifier.
Is it a mod or an amp you make?
It's an amp we make.
You should come to England for tea and crumpets
