  • oe remembers going to the family diners as a child where his uncle would play Portuguese folk songs on his home made guitar. His parents got him a clarinet and piano lessons but after listening to Ike and Tina Turner and Roy Orbison and Elvis on the radio in the late 1950s he wanted to emulate the sounds he was hearing so he talked his parents into getting a guitar and started playing around with it for a while. When he heard the Beatles when they came out in 1964 playing guitars he grabbed his from the closet and started to get interested again and First time Joe saw a live Rock & Roll band was at his high school dance. He soon got together with some friends and started playing some Beatles and Byrd songs. But it was the hard rock that really got to him. Joe talks about the new bands coming over after the first British Invasion died down that he gravitated to that were coming over. “This band like the Yardbirds had guitars like I never heard before. The Stones were pushing the edge with distorted guitars. That was a big influence on me”….JOE PERRY Go to RockSceneMagazine.com for more cool interviews....

Met and had my photo with him in May at a Hollywood Vampires concert. He was as nice and funny as can be. Even gave me a hug. Was a real honor to get to talk to a serious rock legend. Mad respect for him and his talent.

Beginning in the early '70's, every lover of Rock and Roll knew who Joe Perry was and the Joe Perry things he did. Even way down in the deep south of Alabama, Joe was one of THE known and admired rock guitar players of my generation. Delighted he's still out there rocking, playing and being Joe Perry.

So Talented on the Guitar. Riffs and Songs He has written is unbelievable. He Respects and Loves Music and the Guitar. Back in 73 I heard the Aerosmith 1st Album and was stuck to Guitar for Life. Thanks to Joe Perry. Joe Perry looks like the real badass on Guitar even when he isn’t wearing A Guitar. LoL. Amazing The Riffs Joe has written.

It's funny...Rock Scene didn't show the magazine cover in the intro that they featured Joe Perry's first night out solo. I know cause I'm one of the photo's front row at Boston College.

Funny thing, that lttle guitar that looked like a ukelele, is the 'Cavaquinho' (traditional Portuguese instrument), and was the instrument sailors took with them (small and practical), and brought to the hawaian islands too. All the old builders of ukeleles have Portuguese names!

There was a kid in my highschool in the 80s that was an uglier version of Joe who had one bad eye that I think was dead and pointed off . He was short and (I hate to use the word ugly but I would include myself in the description as it relates to Joe having a longish face and prominent nose myself and NOT IN ANYWAY A PRETTY BOY ) .
The Kid was quiet , small skinny kid who wouldn't have been crazy to be worried about being bullied for his broken eye , odd appearence and being small and skinny . He VERY MUCH had a Joe Perry vibe in regards to how he dressed , his hair and his natural appearence . It didn't look like affect either , it seemed authentic to him .
Living in NY there were so many beautiful young women in my large highschool (this was the 80s and pre morbity and obese morbity as the rule for Americans on average and especially amongst teenage and young women with no kids . I was enamored with all the prettiest most impossibly good looking Dark Haired (silky shiny ) young women who was just as perfect as possible being pretty but not prissy , cool looking but not whorish or painted like a clown . I had never been so smitten with somebodies appearence at first glance and was on alert whenever at school to just get a glance as I didn't have classes with her she was one year ahead and not from my neighborhood . I was thrilled just to see her and tried to just look as long as possible without being obvious , looking mental or whatever shortly after I had seen her and was infatuated with her beauty I see her walking with the little fellow that reminded me of the guitarist in my favourite band who always had that look but now I saw him being ADORED and looked at in a way I have yet to ever see again by this impossibly beautiful girl . They both looked at each other in a way like I can't believe this is my boyfriend / girlfriend and so excited to be around each other . She seemed WAY MORE PROUD (Wrong word really ) or lucky to have been with him . Really they were in a bubble to the outside world .
It shocked me the first time I saw it and had to control myself not to look shocked even though they would not have noticed .
As much as I was infatuated with her visage and had noted in my brain previously that the guy looked Joe Perry after a car crash and kind of admired him for having a bold look that might draw attention and did have a certain level of sadness to him I liked him knowing how difficult HS was , especially with a deformity / disability , being slight and not what one would call classicly handsome even without whatever happened to his face .
I never get Jealous of anybody or anything . I was shocked a bit but it also made me like this women I didn't know and had never spoken too and even more stunning and I was extactic for him and it was one of the most life affirming thing I had ever seen and restored some faith in humanity .
I did think that it might be possible that this dude was never gonna have such a physically beautiful women who I figured HAD to be special to be beyond anybody's opinions or judgement in a time in life where that is such a strong force and she saw something in this guy others as physically gifted as her as a HARD NY 10 and in her absolute prime of her beauty and not made jaded at 17 and a pure romantic didn't see. The whole thing was just a perfect example of something romantic that removed all other people from the world and only included 2 people and was for me as an outsider looked like a perfect moment in time watching them and that I might never experience it and that he may not either and perhaps as he got a little older depending on all sorts of things he may never experience something like that as well . I have to believe that he thought he was dreaming but when he was with her he looked about as natural , happy and in the moment as one could be . Who knows what happened to them and really what happened to him . She had way more options then him . Maybe the experience gave him a confidence level and understanding about things that followed him or maybe he started going bald at 19 and got a soul crushing job and was never associated with such beautiful women , again in my imagination her person was as beautiful as her appearence for being so madly and obviously adoring of
    this unlikely candidate .
Profound moment that never left my mind. Joe has always been Unique looking and small (generally fit and shredded for a drug using cigarette smoker ) and frankly better looking by any metric then this kid who had a similar look that was more extreme and that one bulging dead or wounded eye .
It's hard for me to see Joe without that memory . Of course Joe is the definition of cool and the epitome of rock and roll .
When I bought my first Aerosmith album Get Your Wings part of the reason I bought it is despite being hardcore hetero was I thought they looked like what a rock band should look like . Essentially being so UGLY they went past UGLY and came around the other side and we're so unique and interesting looking that they seemed like another breed of human that were beyond any regular assumptions and that made them beyond cool and not regular . I still don't believe I have ever seen anybody that looks quite like Steven who was bullied as a kid for being ugly and odd looking and then became a legend and a poon super magnet . Joe's devotion to his current wife is nice , she must be great considering all the choices he has had and it's romantic .
I hope that kid had a good life but I am SO SURE AT THE MOMENT I SAW HIM there was never a person who felt happier then him . But yeah , I did worry that everything after that might be a disappointment for him or that maybe he would just be happy he had that experience. Your only 16-17 once and for your first love to be like that (not to mention the level of horniness and for that girl to be the one you experience that with is like WOW ) . Some other prototype valid jock might have took it for granted but I know that kid did not . I hope she was as nice as I imagined and maybe a bit bright or deep and didn't chewed up by the world and stuck with a dummy some how or merely hunted by men for her unique beauty and used up after the bloom was off. Being as attractive as she was has its perils as well but I like to think she could see around that considering what I saw . I definitely punched up myself and know the feeling of people looking at a women and then at me and seeing the quizzical look and wondering what does that guy have ( which was not money or particularly good looks at the time ).
Aerosmith was my favourite band and that memory despite barely happening to me as a kid just admiring a girl from afar are strong and I am still a giant fan and think AEROSMITH is SINGULAR over any other rock band from the ERA including ZEP , STONES or any band for being popular and having hits over so many decades and generations unlike ANY BAND EVER in regards to being relevant in different era's and in the Charts with new music . Stones draw crowds but didn't make relevant music after their rise . Aerosmith were monsters in the 70s and then in the 80s ,90s (MTV ERA) and beyond and in some ways got better as a band and STEVEN unlike many singers with so much fry who push their voice like that can still bring it and SOMEHOW at 70 still pulls off the look which one could have expected to not age great especially if the hair went completely south .
So many memories are linked to the band I listened to from 3rd grade on . Happy for their success and not dieing or in obscurity from the life and love that Joe digs his wife so much , she Must be great .
