I work outside for a living in public works. I wear almost this exact same set up, USGI surplus. No bells and whistles but very practical.
I live in Philadelphia and I usually wear level 1’s, level 3’s and level 6. If needed I’ll wear level 2 waffles.
Trust me this set up does it’s job for like 75% less than brand names.
I just recently bought a level 2 waffle top and bottom for $65 from eBay.
You do realize the army switched to synthetic options for a reason. Insulation such a primaloft just work better in most if not all cases. Ofcourse more traditional materials have their place, but if you want top level performance you go for synthetic. Take the ECWCS as an example.

Call it lucky or torture ( just depends on the day); but I work outside 24/7/365. Since I’m on the shore of one of the Great Lakes I get to experience deep snow and high winds. I have learned through trial and error how to layer. This video is really important information. You have to learn this stuff.

Make sure the glove liners are properly sized and that the gloves are a size larger so that your hands aren't constricted and there's a layer of trapped air.

Not hard folks. Wool is your friend in every cold environment. Coming from someone who worked on Radars in alaska. Wool and leather, all ya need. Works for animals, works for humans
your test of wools vs synthetics is what brought me to this channel, this knowledge is worth any amount of expensive gear that doesn't work when you need it.

Thanks for this. I'm from neighboring Alabama and I don't like cold feet either. GI gear may be made by the lowest bidder but in general it is pretty rugged stuff. The military does have standards that manufacturers have to meet. Otherwise the clothing wouldn't last a week with what GIs put them through. Very informative. Bravo Zulu.

RULE ONE: If you want to layer, make sure you size correctly. That said.. My outdoor gear of choice for extreme cold weather has always been GI issue (except for the panty hose) Laugh but that thin CHEAP layer has it's purpose ;-) and has nothing to do with DRAG!. Years of campouts with my 2 boys who are eagle scouts, I learned what worked and didn't work (sometimes the hard way) because I didn't come prepared. Though we didn't have FIELD gear like the "grunts" used but we had our Artic gear on an Ice Breaker (Great Lakes). When my boys were in scouts (both are Eagles). Their sleeping gear and cold weather gear was all MILITARY ISSUE. Long Johns, socks, gloves, hats, etc.. Everything. Why or how could anyone dispute the abilities of a sleeping system (for example) that's battle tested, along with the long term clothing wore by our boots on the ground. Great stuff and functional. p.s., for what it's worth. The BLACK polertec 300 jacket is the freaking best inner layer and even outer layer (as long as it's not really windy) you can wear. I have one that's about 15 years old and other then the pockets being wore (holes), it's still kick ass.
Knowing how to dress for the season and weather is simple and is the foundation of how comfortable and enjoyable your experience is outside.
It sucks too when you see people who aren’t prepared and have a miserable experience and don’t want to do it again.
I carry my “just in case” stuff just like everyone here probably does. I’ve had times where I’ve lent a few simple pieces of gear that helped someone be more comfortable.
I’ve been unprepared before and it sucked. I’ve been unprepared as a group and it exponentially sucked.
Carrying a little extra is worth it. Especially when out with people who might have too much confidence and faith in untested gear and less experience overall.
After I retired from the ARMY and I went to CIF for my turn in appointment I had the DCU & Woodland camo gor-tex jackets and pants and they didn't want them back. I got to keep them along with the same big mits you have on. Great video

Good stuff. I agree with you👍. One of the reasons why I got away from that over priced name brand stuff was because what you had to pay for what you got didn't add up. Pretty much when I walked through the timber with a outdoor research t shirt that was $50 , and it ended up getting torn up from catching on something. Yep that did it for me Military Surplus all the way. It's the best in my opinion, but even surplus stuff is getting pricy now. Those ECW mitts are awesome💯👍😎. Thanks for sharing.

During the Texas freeze last year we dropped to about -10 degrees in Fort Worth. I layered up with what I had and used the woodland outer shell parka. My neighbor across the street served in Iraq early on and gifted me his old woodland cold weather pants he had stashed away. Now I have the pants and jacket. Got the jacket on ebay for like 35 bucks 2 years ago. Military surplus on ebay or a local surplus is the best route to take. Don't waste money on Gucci shit just because some YT channel uses it.

In terms of the Level 2 I see online that's there's two kinds. The waffle kind and the thicker medium weight polypro kind. Which do you prefer? Which do you like more and why?

Love surplus and wool. Layers are always the way to go for heat retention. I will say, I do go for plastic clothing when it comes to a good fleece layer. I have rocked a French surplus pullover for a few years. Not the heaviest thing, but just fine under an unlined shell or sleeveless jacket.
add some mink oil or something to the leather of those glove to them from soaking up water. I use Huberd Shoe Grease on my leather stuff to waterproof them.
Love the winter clothing systems videos. We're up in Canada and this is basically what my kids wear outside everyday. Three or four layers. I have the same mitts and love them. I have fingerless wool gloves and then smaller mitts into the giant ones. I've found waxing the leather side of mitts keeps them much dryer. Doesnt seem to bother you though. Most of my gear I get from the op shop lol. Merino, cashmere sweaters and silk seems to wick well and insulate and I often find these for $5. I'll put a protective layer like flannel or canvas over this to prevent snags. For outer layers I have a hard shell. I try to avoid it as I don't like the sound synthetics make however if its wet snow then you've gotta stay dry. The muklucks look great. I've looked into these but didn't go for it because it's often damp where I am. But as you said these can be waterproofed and the camp boot liner is a great idea! Anyway nice video and appreciate your knowledge.
Layers layers layers ✅ I work out in the elements for 12 hour shifts. Winters go well below -40 here and somedays it's hard to be out for more than 10 minutes at a time. Most shifts were outside in the weather the entire shift. It's funny you mentioned sweating, it's been a couple of months since I last sweat.
I listed what I wear on the coldest days in the comments of the cold weather gear poll the other day.
It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant many people are when they look for form fitting stylish winter clothing versus something that's warm.
One thing to consider is that something that's warm at 15 F isn't warm at minus 15 F any more than something that's warm at 40 F doesn't work at 15 F.
When it's going to remain below 0 F, I go with vapor barrier base layers. You can sweat all you want in those without any evaporative cooling or wet insulating layers. Stephens Warmlite (used to be in New Hamshire nor in Colorado) make tops, bottoms and socks that have a fuzzy inner layer to prevent feeling clammy. They work as a vapor barrier and are also windproof. Not for use above freezing, but they add about 10 degrees more warmth than most midweight base layers and remove remove the "if you sweat you die" element.

I'm in North Georgia mountains and we are currently having a huge cold front coming in and it is currently 11 degrees outside with 35 mph winds. I have recently purchased a bunch of gen 1 and 3 ECWCS stuff and i can say that you are 100% correct with your information on layering. I am wearing the base layer, the waffle second layer, the green fleece and the "cold weather parka" and parka pants. I get hot from just walking around and have to unzip my parka and take my gloves off. Usgi surplus cold weather gear out performs anything sold at bass pro, academy, Cabelas etc.

I took my old BDU gortex jacket and had alterations put buttons in it. I then use M65 filed jacket liner inside my gortex. Best jacket I own and depending on the weather, I can remove the liner

I had to buy mine but $20 new was def worth it

wiggling with fingers and toes is not enough-one has to squeeze very hand to keep the blood flowing. fingers and toes are only bones and tendons.

i figured out one day, if your blood from your core is extremely heated, your bottom layers don't need to be as thick. for me anyways.

Awesome video! You're not kidding about that surplus cold weather fleece, took your advice from the army layering system video and it has been my rock solid warm layer. Love the iner chest pockets, keeps batteries on my tech warm and easily accessible on mountain hikes. Can't wait to hear more of You're wisdom!

Cotton has got a undeserved bad name. If it gets really wet it is bad. But if you keep it dry it is warm af. Base layer synthetics. Secondary insulation layers cotton thermals. The shell is nylon moisture resistant layer. You will stay warm and toasty. It is what it is.
I will say, I have been impressed by some fancy expensive gear. I have a pair of goretex outdoor research gloves with goat skin palms and fingers and have been fine skiing all day even into the single digits with tons of wind. They've also kept me dry when putting my hands in slushy wet snow, which is much more than I can say for any other glove I've used.
There is a reason Outdoor Research makes gloves for the Marines and Special Operations. Outdoor Research makes the best gloves.
You’re definitely right that you don’t need expensive technical gear to stay warm. It works excellent and is tough as hell. Where the expensive technical gear excels is its weight reduction. For backcountry hunters, that may have to pack 50-90lbs of meat out, shaving weight on gear is important. Great video though!
If you wear too many layers and sweat like crazy then you will freeze regardless of if they are expensive or military surplus layers. What's important is staying dry so you want to be a little bit chilly in order to limit your sweating. It also helps to wear stuff that insulates when wet but nothing will keep you toasty when wet. Another thing that can help is a vapor barrier layer. Wearing latex gloves under your insulated gloves will hold in your sweat and stop it from compromising your insulation. You can also do this with your feet and really your whole body by using neoprene socks and VBL base layers.
I am a little surprised that the US military doesn’t issue mesh shirt and pants. It’s much better than the base layer as it’s more breathable but also dries faster. That is what European countries do especially in Finland, Sweden and Norway.
I bought a knock off m65 field jacket with liner. It keeps me plenty warm. I also have a pair of insulated bib overalls, that keep me warm when pair with a thermal base layer. Both were relatively inexpensive. I also have the wool mitt liners and they keep my hands toasty for the most part.

We didn't have any of that stuff when I was in and believe me it's FREEZING cold and snow in the desert southwest in winter. I'm glad the Army caught up to modern technology. I love wool stuff but snow pills up on it, makes a mess, gotta knock it all off before you enter a shelter or it melts onto you. I'll add that the better acclimated you are to such weather the less you'll need over time, exposure to the conditions and overall fitness are a big part of staying warm. Love your stuff, thanks!

I personally really like my UCP gortex or the navy gortex both work fantastic and are nice and warm
I like how you noticed to use goretex the exact opposite way it was marketed for.....in the deep cold of winter which is exactly when i use goretex. Goretex blocks 100% of wind and makes your underneath insulation layers much more effective allowing them to be thinner. Goretex also breathes better the colder it gets outside.
Poncho for anytime above zero celcius or you'll just sweat as much as getting rained on.
I also only ever wear a goretex jacket because if you wear both jacket and pants you'll sweat to death.

I agree 100% EXCEPT for the Gortex shell. Its too noisy and bulky. I wear the LVL 1(ninja), LVL 2(waffle) and if really cold the LvL3 fleece. Love that stuff! Cabela now has a version similar but they want $80. In snow condition when hunting. I wear a tyvex suit. Great camo in snow and NO wind gets through. When butchering a deer it keeps my clothes from getting bloody. Coast guard wool boots socks as liner under bass pro merino hunting socks. If I am in the snow I am hunting. Those pants won't work noisy. If I am not hunting in snow. Coast guard float coat or mustang suit is the best thing going. Wish I had a spare to send you. Love your Content! keep it coming!
I love my old army gear. I slept in the 3 layer sleep system on the ground in Nangalam with no pad and stayed warm in the middle of December in the snow. It’s a heavy sleep system, but it is legit! I also have an ultra light system from War Bonnet that’s good, but - it has its place. Love your videos, Randski- been a subscriber from pretty much the beginning.

Gen 1 ecwcs parka. Ive had a close personal relationship with them since i was first issued one in 94. In a cold rain, they will keep you warm and dry for a couple days. After which it just keeps you warm. As a general purpose outer layer they are great, but I wouldn’t wear them as a work coat if you’re doing shit like construction. M65 field jacket is way better for that. More durable. I’ve been issued both, and still use both. Cold and dry, or just a light snow, m65 all the way. It actually has a hood with rough fur attachment that is large enough to fit over a helmet. Which is why it has those button holes in the collar. The gen 1 parka continues to be my winter, rain, and heavy snow favorite. It has a rough fur attachment for the hood, which is freaking awesome in winter with high winds.
🎉 I agree, the military surplus is cheap, tough and effective. In similar conditions, I use the Gore-Tex pants in addition to the gore-Tex jacket you have, with surplus Sweedish army wool pants underneath. The wind has no chance. Oh why no scarf? What do you think of the Mickey Mouse boots?

I know this works because I've personally worn very similar clothing (minus the mits) in -5c (23f) for weeks, I've also camped out in the snow.
The total cost of all of my clothing was around £550 ($670) new. That includes jacket, pants, fleece jacket and pants, base layer x4, socks x4, head cover x2, gloves x2 and boots.

Military gloves are great but I've used welder mitts with military wool liners. Justin Charles merino wool long John's. Baffin booties.Wiggies sleeping bag w Marine gortex outside bag. Mickey mouse boots w gortex socks liner & wool over socks. I deer hunt all night long. So far -30 below no problem. Wish it would get colder here so I can see what I do will work better. Russia is only a step away from me. Canadians can't own guns so it would be easy to attack from the north.

Most average Joe's and Jane's go to outdoors stores buying 900$ stuff believing that the jackets sold there are warmer than those you buy at your normal clothing store.
Outdoors stores sell clothes for people who are moving and possibly overheating and sweating. Works great!
The warmer jackets in regular clothing stores are often (actually, used to be) made to wear over your thin night club clothes while waiting for the bus at 3 a.m. Been there!
I appreciate the price drop for outdoors jackets due to market expansion, but I also miss affordable prices on good ol' just-standing-still-in-the-snow-and-never-will-move-fast-enough-to-break-a-weat jackets.

I have the military surplus woodland camo gore-Tex jacket and pants . I wear the fleece jacket under it and a pair of snow pants under the pants and I have a pair of the mittens and stay very warm …

I like ur layers, Randall! I have had good results with a synth t shirt, long sleeve base layer(mid weight), lighter fleece over that, a light synthetic nylon insulated jacket with hood and hard shell , for my top. I like having some wind resistance without having to use a shell only.
Waterproof gaiters are also good to have, Dutch military surplus waterproof gaiters, DPM Camo work great and are inexpensive

That's a good outfit for a warm day and I have worn that combination at -30 for a few hours but if I was out all day doing very litte movement I'd want a down puffer jacket instead of the fleece. Goretex pant, lite fleece and tights usually work on the lower for all day warmth. Once you hit -50 Fur lined hood starts to be a real help. Hand and feet are tough. Old fashioned Skidoo boots with felt liners are good but not meant for hiking, loose boots and three layers of socks. plastic baggy between layers works really well. As soon as you lift your hands above your heart they get cold very fast. overmitts yes but big low pockets are my best friend. The american military system is awesome for what it was designed for as are the prices but we are -30 from Dec-Feb up above you so we need a bit more warmth and have less need for flexibility. I have never been able to afford the helly hansen or canada goose parkas but they are perfect for single layer put it on and walk for 10 miles at -30.

I've been in Canada over this winter. I've been using the ECWCS Happy suit top. With a light wool base layer and that, I've been comfortable down to the temp of -27f. When it warms up a bit, I have a gortex top I can use.

My only problem with those army mittens is the mouth likes to eat snow. It can cause issues in some situations where you may not have time to keep a good eye on them. . I also generally only use army wool inserts for my hands. Take a few sets with me and alternate them as they get wet but if Im moving they will keep me warm even when wet. Easy to dry, stow and replace and will work fine in some very gnarly Alaska cold weather. I totally shun synthetics where applicable to stay warm. A wool sweater over fleece any day.. I only use gortex in the winter for snow. Never found any Gore-Tex able to withstands a prolonged determined episode of rain. One of those parkas almost got me some serious hypothermic trouble once..
You might have needed to wash and dry the goretex to reactivate the DWR
I have the Gen2 Woodland Goretex top and bottom, Gen3 OCP Goretex top and bottom, Gen3 ninja top and bottom, Gen3 waffle top and bottom, and instead of Gen3 fleece jacket, I use a Helikon Tex Patriot Fleece Hoody in multicam and a matching fleece watch cap and balaclava. I love the ECWCS stuff, it works well in my AO where zero degrees F is about as bad as it gets.

Thanks Randall! I am learning more and more how to properly use the surplus gear that I own already. Do you ever use the pants that were issued with that top? I have them in Desert Camo, UCP, Woodland and OCP. They are what I was planning to use in cold wet conditions. Got some chances to try them coming up in the next two weeks here in lower Alabama.

Being from Michigan, I agree with everything, but the muskluks. If they get wet over the course of action, they will freeze over night and be unwearable at that point. Synthetic footwear is essential in subzero temps.

If you want to layer your footwear. Use the Air Force Arctic boots over the USMC HAPPY BOOTIE. Totally waterproof, light weight and warm.

Also I worked outside for year in co construction and if I don't have to I'd rather spend my money on my kid then the latest clothing out there don't underestimate thrift stores and good old-fashioned wool. There's been plenty of times I found Sorels with the full wool liner at thrift stores.
Tradesmen used to sport a lot of military surplus because it met FR requirements. But then the ridiculous safety people require FR tags, and Carhartt met that standard. I actually had some NFPA tags sewn onto regular clothes and no one cared. Bureaucracy...

@@GruntProof army surplus in CDA Idaho years ago is where I always bought these full rubber boots they call them Mickey mouse boots but they didn't have the valve on them and with a pair of wool socks and oversized with a wool liner your feet would never get cold

I've found old (pre 1960) Czech military winter inserts that could finally fit this need I have in my head. At the time I bought newer Vz. 85 nicer model. It didnt last a year and I can compress it to one milimeter. IMO you wont pass an inch long needle test in all your clothes inside a sleeping bag. That's why you need a foam pad. Of course a fancy goose down jacket with 3 layers of something will work when it's fluffy. That's why most boots suck. It's compressed (AND wet). Unless you have custom foam insoles

If you want to be nice and warm without even moving the ninja suit, waffle suit, fleece and happy suit. And if you want to die of heat stroke in the coldest climates wear the above and do literally any physical activity lol.
I snagged a brand new pair of happy suit pants recently for $30, bonus is it was even the right size lol. Right now is a rough time to get winter wear surplus without overpaying.
