I'm inclined towards a leaf shaped hewing spear with wings. 18"-24"/45cm-61cm blade with at least 6"-8"/15cm-20cm of a socket. That would double for a Gladius/Archer's Sword. And if you haft it on anything between 1m-1.5m you end up with a demi-spear that suffices as a long sword as well. And let us NEVER forget, some big-stick engery, eh Shad? Three weapons out of one weapons-system. And even somewhat concealable with the blade sheathed under some clothing and the haft as a walking stick.

Same here, bastard swords have a shorter handle but mostly almost equal length blade as a longsword. Meaning they are easier to carry and can still be manipulated with both hands for stronger blows if needed.

Personally I'd say it's the bastard (or hand-and-a-half) sword that is king. It has all the same qualities that make the longsword great but I think the slight decrease in range is more than made up for in the ability to effectively wield it single- or two-handed. The versatility of using a shield or a partying dagger or switching forms from one to two handed mid fight to throw off your opponent elevates the bastard sword over the longsword
I just subscribed. You guys make great content and I am proud to support your work. Your break out book shadow of the conqueror is fantastic. Great work, keep it up.
Their videos are very similar. Wasn't surprised at all he prefers the long sword and. it was just him rambling would have been better as an Award ceremony or some interesting format.
Here is my comment to combat the algorithm! I've been watching this channel for goodness knows how long, and it's nice to have a video that hearkens back to the days when Shad would just chat about a specific topic. Don't get me wrong, Nate and Tyranth are both wonderful people and watching them and their antics always bring a smile to my face; and I understand that times and needs also change. But I kinda miss the "armchair chats" Shad used to have. It'd be nice to have one of those again every now and then. Anyways, that's my two cents, can't wait for the next video!
I agree with you, I’ve been watching since 2017 and I love all the content, but I din’t think it’s necessary for Shad to move away from armchair chats. I love the outdoors stuff even more! Of course I want him doing it! But the armchair chats have always been fun too. It’s like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. You don’t want it all the time, but it’s the og, and it’s nice to have every now and then.
While longsword is a "two" handed sword, it's often light enough to be comfortably wielded 1 handed, providing it the versatility to be used with a shield where a greatsword would often be too heavy to be comfortably wielded 1 handed. I think I agree with your assessment that the Longsword is likely the most versatile sword type while also being immensely useful in most typical sword use cases. That said, I personally prefer hand and a half swords at ren faires because i'm less likely to hit peoples ankles when I turn around. :P
I feel like we have to take into account context though. Are we talking about a battlefield, dueling, self-defense? Longsword isn't the most ideal in most of those situations. Shields are pretty necessary on the battlefield, so one-handed swords are gonna be more favored as backup weapons to spears. Rapiers are by far the most dominating dueling weapon. Longswords are pretty cumbersome as a self-defense weapon.
@@andrewli6606 didn’t the rapier came as a counter to fullplate as time reached early renaissance? What other weapon would be used in the battlefield against a 16th century full body plate of a heavy knight/cavalry?
I don't know where the one-handed use comes from. Yes, they are able to be "used" one-handed. They're awful at it though. Cuts always are overswung and the point is so long that accuracy goes down the drain. While I find they can be somewhat used one-handed, it's as useful as saying a rifle can be used one handed. Hand-and-a-half swords really are the largest end of single-handed use. I would say unless you use the longsword like a rapier, an arming sword will beat a longsword in one-handed combat most of the time/
Just subscribed on Patreon. The value I've found in this channel goes so far above and beyond just "swords cool". You've been a major part of my interest in medieval history and I would hate to see the channel go.

The best sword, just like the best gun, is the one you have on you when you need it. Not really relevant those days, but certainly true from a historical standpoint.
i have a Leatherman multitool. it's not the most comfortable or easy to use tool, but when I need a screwdriver or pliers, its right there on my belt and not scattered across half the place in twenty different possible locations.
To be entirely honest. Here lately I've become super biased towards the Flamberge. When I was younger and first learned what a Flamberge looked like, I thought it looked stupid because it was wavy. But as I've learned more about it and what it has been used for, not to mention just how Beasty and scary it looks, I've grown really attached to it
I agree. A flamberge or zweihander, in most ways just seems like a bigger longsword so of course it's better. If we allow shields then one handed swords get a proper chance because most of them would be used with one but still.
Hate to tell you guys this, but the flamberge, like the bastard sword, IS A LONG SWORD. So you're agreeing. And I agree too that the flamberge is the best long hand and a half sword.
Hello Shadiversity, I've been a subscriber for a while now. I been a big fan just as long too. I'm sorry you all are struggling right now and I hope it's gets better for you all. I also had an idea for you, the main reason I subscribed in the first place was because of your Conan Exiles Castle builds, you know Castle Vanberg, that one castle that on the very top of the mountain, and this one castle that was separated into three buildings atop these rocks that had "Great Defensive Capabilities". And I really really enjoyed those and told a few friends about it. They stopped watching because there weren't any more videos like that so, maybe bring those kind of videos back?
My go to is a hand and a half. When I was doing reenactment, I found there were a lot of circumstances where I needed a free hand. Usually for a shield. But a lantern and grappling also came up a lot. I preferred to have a sword that I could comfortably use with one hand, but still had room to put both hands on it comfortably. That being said though, I have long arms and could usually at reach someone with a proper longsword, or at least match them.
Oh no you're entirely right. I have sword arms and use a hand and a half. There's a reason knights used them as well. It was the longest length handle that didn't interfere when riding that could easily be used one or two handed.
I personally really like the gladius sword and Viking sword, as they are small and are useful in a lot of situations, whether it be fighting, thievery, defending, hunting or whatever. It’s not the best sword, but it is a nice sword
Really historically there's no "viking sword" it was a common one handed sword or arming sword if that's the term you prefer. I really hate the 1950s sword classification system
I think the longsword is more powerful due to longer reach and better defense, but not very cumbersome like the more powerful weapons like the greatsword.
I've not seen the video yet but here's my prediction; the best sword is whichever you're most comfortable with using. For shad that seems to be the longsword. Edit: I was half right.
Agreed, or would put it "the one your trained to use". I am ok with a Longsword, but much prefer my Schiavona or Rapier, as have trained with them for much longer.
I'd have to agree on your comfort point. Mostly because out of the limited experience I have trying longswords. I've had issues wielding them because of the grip being to bulky for me to hold onto properly
Longsword is great, if you have the requisite skill and the space to use one. For most people, including anyone with a day job, and anyone in tight spaces (ie. indoors) a cutlass/falchion/shortsword would probably be more useful. Same way a handgun is primarily a defensive weapon in the modern world. While a rifle is what you choose when you intend to go on the offense.
At 10:14 Swords becoming the favorite of History.... Swords are sexy!! Spears are for the common foot soldier, accessor for barbarians....but swords are carried by the knights in shining armor!! At least that is my take on why swords are a favorite of History....
definitely agree! Most longswords are light enough (and if made properly) to be used with one hand. most are long enough to keep a good distance from an opponent but can also be used pretty close. I think indoors in a small room would be an issue though. Unless the blade is about arming sword length. while I know this is not a video about LARP, it is probably the best LARP sword as well.
Yeah arming swords are better for indoors, but you can use half swording with longswords, on the other hand, longswords are much better, though definitely not the best, in battlefields and outdoors on their own.
Wifey gave me a receipt for my birthday last month. A Lockwood XVI longsword is currently on order and being crafted. My first real sword, and I'm sooo looking forward to it.

This feels like the same argument as "What's the best tank?" In tank design there is the "iron triangle" with: Firepower, Armour & Mobility. These properties are placed at each corner of a triangle and when you look at a tank it's placed somewhere in this triangle. Tanks like the T28/95 is a super heavy tank at 86 metric tonnes, the mobility is non-existant, but the firepower and armour is really up there, so it would hug the wall between firepower and armour. On the other hand, Light tanks, such as BT-7, Pz. I and such have great mobility, but fire power and armour is leaving much to be desired. So, where are modern tanks on this triangle? Smack dab in the middle. Would the same be possible to apply to sword design? I googled some but didn't find anything. I'd imagine the properties would be: Block, Thrust/Stab and Cut. Like Shad said: An axe will land in the same corner as Cut, a spear will be the same point as Thrust/Stab marker is. Swords will land somewhere in the middle of this triangle, meaning, looking back at the tank analogy, Swords are some of the best blades we got. Naturally if more properties are required, it's not necessary for this to be a triangle, just so happened that in tank design, those three properties sums it up good enough.

I know I’m 3 weeks late, but I know of a sword with origins from my home country, the Philippines, that I’d say it hands down the best sword ever, in terms of balance in combat and utility. It’s the Itak Tagalog, it has been used for hundreds of years, used to fight in many wars, including the most modern ones, it has great cutting and piercing capabilities and out of combat, it is used in agriculture and construction. Hands down best sword both in history and modern day.
This channel has been one of the most valuable resources for my research, while designing the combat and equipment rules for my "crunchy" TTRPG that has realistic combat and survival rules. I owe Shad and the team more than I could ever count. Thank you for all of the years of information and entertainment.
You genuinely are making some of the best content you have ever made Shad. If my solo gardening business was going well enough to help I certainly would because I get endless enjoyment from your videos. Keep it up Shad and the gang we all love you from all over the world.
Shad, I must confess. That longsword you used in this video, for years now I envy you because of that sword. My God that's a beautiful sword, sometimes I even stop paying attention to what you are saying and I just stare at that sword. To think that I mock weebs for falling in love with fictional characters and now I find myself in love with a sword. Every time I dream of the slaughter of my enemies, I can only see myself with that sword. I may let go of this envy but God help that one day I can buy a sword like that.
My personal favorite is arming sword. It's a mini alexandria sword and I'm short so it's perfect for my size. I also like khopesh and falchion a lot for their design.
There's also the point of half-swording, longsword having the right length and width to be used pretty decently in close quarters, either to thrust, punch or as a tool for grappling. My thoughts is that, though not being the most optimal weapon in all situations, it always offer pretty decent means to deal with oponents provided you have the skills and training. It's a weapon for adaptable and creative fighters, and I love that about it.
great work Shad! i'd love to see a similar video, but pertaining to fantasy swords/weapons. things like the Doom Crucible sword, the blade of Arendil (idk, the one used by Aragorn), the sword from Final Fantasy, lightsabers, etc. also. my completely serious, 100% not a joke belief... is that the best sword... is the nunchuck

I was half-expecting the bastard sword. Very functional as an arming sword but also allows for better leverage when two-handed. Much better than the longsword when used one-handed and somewhat more convenient carry to boot!
On the last video I was really impressed at how good the longsword was able to penetrate the chain mail armor. Given that, along with its incredible versatility, I think the longsword is perhaps the best overall. BTW, does anybody know the exact design of that chain mail piercing longsword from the last video? I know it was based off of Blackfyre, but I don't know if there is a specific name beyond that.
The sword is based on Blackfyre from House of the Dragon, but I think Shad said that it was discontinued. If you mean the blade type, the show's version of Blackfyre seems to be some mix between a type 18c and a type 20a longsword.
You're wrong laddie! You forgot the Claymore! It has an x factor attribute that conquers all other weapons both modern and historic. FREEDOM!!!!!🏴🏴🏴
Absolutely love the design of the kopis, but the versatility of a bastard sword is hard to beat. One or two hands , light, good range, good for stabbing, good for chopping. It doesn’t excel at anything but it’s great in lots of areas
The best sword is the one that is right for the job. You went over this at the beginning of your video. Another thing that you went over is ease of carry. I teach handgun classes (in the US) and there is a lot of people out there who think they want the biggest gun they can get for an every day carry load out. Big guns, much like big sword I assume, are more difficult to carry and if you are hesitant in carrying it you are more likely to leave it at home. Picking something that you can comfortably wear everyday is so much more important than most other factors. The gun (sword) you leave at home is worthless no matter how amazing the tool is.
I love how surprising Shad's conclusion is! Who could have predicted that he'd pick the longsword as the best type of sword in the world? It's such an out-of-left-field conclusion that I'm quite frankly delighted. Imagine how boring it would have been if he'd picked a type of sword that he constantly gushes over and collects more and more versions of, and tests and compares with other more specialized swords to demonstrate how it's just plain superior for being a jack of all trades, and quite possibly jerks himself off to the thought of it on a regular basis? The longsword truly is the most versatile bladed weapon ever, there's nothing it cannot do well. It can even beat a dead horse!
Lol well said sir! I was also extremely surpriswd to discover he picked the longsword... thought for sure the title would go to the katana, so color me shocked.
The best sword is the one that doesn't break. Doesn't have to hold an edge longer, doesn't have to cut cleaner, doesn't have to be folded more times, doesn't have to be longer/shorter/fatter/skinnier, it just has to not break.
No, the best sword is the one available to you when you need it. It doesn't matter how strong or How good your sword is, you don't have it when you need it, your sword is useless.
Ah you almost got me. Saved the best part of the longsword for last. Ye olde murder stroke. I’m like. “Is he gonna mention that bit?” And boom you did. Love the content Shad. While I disagree with some of the points you make in your videos I enjoy your content and a lot of the points you make are spot on. And you make these points with caveats in mind, knowing there’s always an exception to the rule whether it be a design difference or the quality of the weapon/armor in question.
I'd argue the Gladius and/or Spatha. Stabbing weapons have always proven to be far more deadly than slicing weapons (just by the nature of how hard a stab is to treat instead of a slice), place on top of that how effective and long-used they were in (arguably) the most effective military in history. And I think it deserves to be in the conversation, if not the undisputed best. Even besides deadliness it's shorter width makes it excellent for group fights, and it's more broad blade also gives it enough reliability to parry and hold up from direct hits and attacks on hard surfaces. And most importantly the blade itself is actually small enough that it's still in relatively common use today as an alternative to home defense and machate-uses (as shown by one of your own previous sponsors). The fact is the average person being able to own and wield a Gladius is a much greater sign as it's effectiveness and use than compared to how someone may own a longsword, katana, etc. but not use it outside of specific situations. Really the most overall generalist weapon with no real flaws or downsides to it's use outside of perhaps blade size and an underwhelming slice potential when compared to other blades.
you raise good arguments however the gladius became obsolete by the second century and the spatha became obsolete by the 6th century. id think they would of remained prominent for longer if they were truly the best. sword evolution took the path that it did for a reason
@@trolltalwar Obsolete by whose standards? They weren't fit for the less rigid warfare that came afterwards or the gunpowder after that yes, but that's by no means their fault or a sign of them being "obsolete". That's like saying "The Katana became obsolete the second they were introduced to the European longsword", you're judging them based off of use, but their use is much like a culture, it is dependent on the time, place, and people who wield them. Besides by that logic the Longsword, katana, etc. all these weapons are now obsolete due to use today, but the Gladius is not because it is currently in use by militaries and private use. (although much smaller than their original design). Which would still make their argument for being the best stronger, not weaker.
@@victorro8760 As it's called by name the gladius, they are technically handheld machetes now, but are still traditional Gladius' by nature. Shad even had one as a sponsor at one point.
I prefer a sword thats short enough for indoors like a hallway, with a low balance point for wielding with 1 hand, but a handle long enough for 2 hands if you wanna double grip it & try to get a little more power & leverage out of it
I think the increased ease of cutting effectively with a single-edged sword shouldn't be understated. You can call it a skill issue, since with perfect edge alignment and technique you can cut just as effectively with a double edged sword, but it's a whole lot simpler to execute a technique with perfect edge alignment and form when you're cutting tatami mats or bottles than it is when you're trying to cut a moving opponent who's also trying to attack you with a weapon. If you parry an opponent's sword and deliver a counterstroke, it might not even be humanly possible to strike with perfect edge alignment, because your blade is still vibrating from the shock of the blade clash. A more rigid blade will help minimize the extent to which your cutting capacity may be reduced in live fighting even with perfect form. That's not to say that double-edged swords don't have real advantages in combat, but we shouldn't minimize the assets of single-edged ones by looking only at the advantages they have in test cutting either.
Now, this may branch out into another video, but running in agreement with _aaaalmost_ everything you say here, I still love arming sword+buckler. It's analogical in the sense that it goes for the most sword and most shield you can carry in most circumstances, a criterion I really like for this kind of evaluation. Great video!!!
The best sword is totally dependent on the wielder. For someone who is five foot tall, a short sword might be the best since they will be able to use it better than the bigger swords. Meanwhile a claymore would be great for a giant of a man since he can use it similar to a longsword on a normal person, plus the reach and momentum would be incredibly hard to counter for most opponents.
As a giant person, you’re not wrong, but if you give a large, strong man a weapon which is lightish and nimble like a rapier, we can be absolutely terrifying to face also if we’ve been trained properly… Moral of the story: if you’re a smaller person, opt for the polearm!
I have always liked longswords, in fact it was one of your much, much older videos that made me think longswords were specifically a good choice for me. Though I have recently taken a deep dive into broadswords (the scottish basket hilt broadsword, since "broadsword" gets thrown around a lot) tons of different versatile designs. Can have incredible range, cutting and thrusting power, you can even have a backsword with the a double edge at the tip, so its got increased strength for cutting in addition to being able to strike with the false edge in a back cut, and it's got full hand protection, in addition to being usable with a shield, without sacrificing much in reach. The big downside is, they require a bit more strength to wield, but as saber was what I trained in in my younger years, a lot of the techniques transfer over really well.
See an this is why my pick would be the bastard sword - loses a bit of reach to the longsword but that ability to wield in one hand more effectively adds shield or dagger play into the mix. One could argue that some shorter longswords are basically bastard swords and thus my vote would still be to longsword.
Summarized my conclusion regarding the [hand-and-half] *bastard sword* and why it's what I consider the overall 'best' sword. Also my second favorite sword of all time. My preference on top of that is single edge; having that hefty spine just seems more preferable for given, alternate situations, and a thicker handguard and bigger pommel; strikes with my handle seem to be a go-to for me for some reason.
Honestly Shad, your videos help me so much with my projects, mostly the comic I'm working on rn. When I'm able to I fully intend to help support your guys
I would posit that the bastard sword would be a decent contender for all the pros you get with the longsword, with the added option of (effectively) one-handing if you need to
@@Leo.23232long sword and bastard sword also aren’t the best for self-defense. It’s a pretty big sword to carry all day on the street. Two handed swords also are pretty bad as cavalry swords. Shield are also immensely more important than swords.
As always your arguments hold water. As an all around sword. The long sword is very very good. But It also depends on how and where you intend to use it. F.ex. In narrow spaces, it would be better with a short sword or a long dagger. And that is only one example. And like you said, there are better cutters, thrusters etc. If you have the luxury of knowing exactly what kind of battle you are going into. You might wanna chose another sword that is better at what you really need.

Well considering that bastard sword is a type of longsword I approve.
It's also easy to draw in self defense or bodyguard situations.
@@ChickenWire it's the authenticity in the passion for the work that I appreciate when I watch Shad and company.
Keep up the good work Shad !
Where the bastard sword fit then?
I would say unless you use the longsword like a rapier, an arming sword will beat a longsword in one-handed combat most of the time/
can be used one handed, not comfortably though
It's hard to overlook the versatility of longswords. Plus I prefer how they look over most other swords

Just wait a couple years 😉
I carry a sword with me almost every day of the week.
I concur with this message 👌
I agree. For this reason, I feel that the cost of the blade, it's durability and wearability are also important considerations on which is best.
best sword happens to be gun with a knife on the end
To be entirely honest. Here lately I've become super biased towards the Flamberge. When I was younger and first learned what a Flamberge looked like, I thought it looked stupid because it was wavy. But as I've learned more about it and what it has been used for, not to mention just how Beasty and scary it looks, I've grown really attached to it
This man Landsknechts
I agree. A flamberge or zweihander, in most ways just seems like a bigger longsword so of course it's better. If we allow shields then one handed swords get a proper chance because most of them would be used with one but still.
It was my main weapon in Dark Souls 3 for most of the game
It is definitely a more powerful weapon than a long sword, but is much harder to carry around.
Hate to tell you guys this, but the flamberge, like the bastard sword, IS A LONG SWORD. So you're agreeing. And I agree too that the flamberge is the best long hand and a half sword.

As I read once, the long sword is not a master at one particular thing, it is a jack of all trades.
Those two are nice. I agree. I prefer arming sword. They are slightly shorter than the viking sword and I like their design
Which half? The Long or the Sword?
I'd have to agree on your comfort point. Mostly because out of the limited experience I have trying longswords. I've had issues wielding them because of the grip being to bulky for me to hold onto properly
Longsword is great, if you have the requisite skill and the space to use one. For most people, including anyone with a day job, and anyone in tight spaces (ie. indoors) a cutlass/falchion/shortsword would probably be more useful. Same way a handgun is primarily a defensive weapon in the modern world. While a rifle is what you choose when you intend to go on the offense.
Longswords are far better for battlefields on their own though.
I hope you guys can keep making videos!

Just joined to support! Love this content even though I will likely never sword fight 😂
definitely agree!

This feels like the same argument as "What's the best tank?"
In tank design there is the "iron triangle" with: Firepower, Armour & Mobility.
Thanks for this video, Shad. That specific sword is my favorite from the channel. Great to see it again.

I also like khopesh and falchion a lot for their design.
Great Video! Also I believe the Longman would approve of you choosing that particular blade Sir Shad.
I do agree, and I do not think there is any weapon that is the most optimal for even more than one situation, let alone all situations.

The Greek Kopis
At this point youtube is anti creator
Shad, you should design what the perfect sword would look like.
The visualization of the vpn was great lol
The best sword is the one that doesn't break. Doesn't have to hold an edge longer, doesn't have to cut cleaner, doesn't have to be folded more times, doesn't have to be longer/shorter/fatter/skinnier, it just has to not break.
So, the best sword is a solid metal club?

@@boodstain What sword are you referring to that's used today and is similar to a gladius?
@@victorro8760 As it's called by name the gladius, they are technically handheld machetes now, but are still traditional Gladius' by nature. Shad even had one as a sponsor at one point.
@@boodstain I can't find what you're referring to.
No the correct answer is Buster sword. Try again.
So just a longsword that's sized to the person?
Actually, a shorter person would need the reach advantage a longer sword would provide for them.
As a giant person, you’re not wrong, but if you give a large, strong man a weapon which is lightish and nimble like a rapier, we can be absolutely terrifying to face also if we’ve been trained properly…
Moral of the story: if you’re a smaller person, opt for the polearm!
That green longsword is my favorite among all swords in your collection.
Your title are getting so good 👍
Axes can thrust, depends on the shape of the head
Honestly Shad, your videos help me so much with my projects, mostly the comic I'm working on rn. When I'm able to I fully intend to help support your guys
I would posit that the bastard sword would be a decent contender for all the pros you get with the longsword, with the added option of (effectively) one-handing if you need to
by his own metrics its superior because its more versatile, but i dont think thats the best metric for whats better
@@Leo.23232long sword and bastard sword also aren’t the best for self-defense. It’s a pretty big sword to carry all day on the street. Two handed swords also are pretty bad as cavalry swords. Shield are also immensely more important than swords.
@@andrewli6606 i agree with all that
As always your arguments hold water.
