  • Did you know that you can find totally fake timetables to Bulgarian buses online? But what about the trains?
    We decided to try it out. We went to the Varna railway station, bought a ticket to some 100km distant town (?) of Asparukhovo. And oh boy, it took us by surprise. And the train was just the beginning.
    Let's walk the streets of this little town that looks like it was forgotten in time. Wait, is it a Stalin's picture on the doors? Can this car even start? They say there is a restaurant, but is it really? What do people here live like?
    But do you know why we actually wanted to visit this little town? We need to leave it for a bit. There are some very beautiful rocky formations above the river. And if we do not die in the marshlands, you will see it too.
    Sounds interesting?
    Let's go.

    WTF, I recognize the station and that first street - a classmate of mine in high school had invited us to their grandmother's house in that village. Few things have changed for... quite a lot of years. How did you decide to go to Asparuhovo in the first place? Anyway, yes, short-range rail lines (

      well honestly, I was just checking out the map and I saw the rocks near to Asparuhovo and wanted to see it... :) and it made sense to me to also explore the town/village nearby :) I really enjoy exploring places that are not so exposed by tourism :)
      and yeah, the train was a bit older, but it went on time and got us where we wanted to go, so there is no complaint :)
      the decline of population is very visible... but I can see it in many european countries... people moving from the countryside to the cities...

    Train was old, but cool, in a way. It served it's purpose - though it might remember some kings, queens and emperors :D And the rock were trully stunning.

    I'm from Sofia and love hanging out at the train stations with my 3yo son, who has also grown to love trains, so I'm familiar with what is currently moving around the rails, but I was absolutely stunned to see that there are still some of those old ones in operation. This is an old Latvia built Multiple unit train (called "motrisa" in Bulgarian) from the Riga's train factory. I have only seen them on stations probably more than 10 years ago. I remember the strange vibrating drumming sounds they produced. I have never ridden one and I would absolutely love to go on one and travel back in time. By the way, they were replaced by the awesome Siemens ones (called Desiro), which are quite lovely, although they are also around 15 years old now. Thank you for the video!

      well it looked strange at first, but honestly it wasn't uncomfortable or anything... :)
      just that squat toilet :D that is something my parents told me they had on they vacation in Bulgaria in the 1970s :D

    • @JoePsysky
      @JoePsysky 6 місяців тому

      @@LexUniverse , If you think about it, it is the most hygienic way to use a public toilet - by not touching anything with your skin. I don't know how often during the day a toilet seat would be cleaned by anyone (not even sure there is someone doing that during the day), so I would definitely don't want to sit on something on any train without pants on. It is something that has left over form the orient culture, which we have a lot in common with given our history. It is not the worst thing, but we are quite influenced by western culture which makes us reject the idea of squatting to do our business. Cheers!
