He absolutely did. You can have the best quarterback or running back in the league, but if you don’t have a decent line, none of that matters.
The "big uglies" won't get the commercial contracts... but the Rings don't come without those warriors who often play every damn snap when their side has the field and either need to create a hole a bus could drive through or shut down the opposition between the hash marks. *edit add ---- the footwork that a big man like that has to have AND the longevity he had?.... crazy mad freak of nature

Yes, You can't show anything about Larry Allen without showing how a man that huge could run that fast. When I first saw that video I couldn't believe my eyes. I thought that someone had sped Larry up some type of Photoshop style. These guys need to react to that video on it's own. Larry Allen was 6ft 3in 325 pounds. He not one of those guys who weighs heavier than they look. He looks like he is all that 325 pounds. That's why you eyes don't believe what they are seeing. I wish there was a way to do an addendum to this video and add that video of him chasing down that linebacker.

There's a chase down play on a turnover they left out, the speed on this guy was almost more amazing than his strength for someone his size.
I'm not sure how you can have a Larry Allen clip without that chase down.

Yep, the commentator rightfully pointed out what an impressive feat it was. I think he said in his initial reaction it was one of the most athletic things he'd ever seen and he is right.

Ran down a linebacker after being behind him. I saw that live and I could not believe it.
6 foot 3 325 pounds. Larry was an absolute UNIT on the field. He also ran a 4.8 40 yard dash time.
His game speed was more impressive then even that. When He ran down that linebacker he was moving faster then that. It’s not abnormal. Jerry rice had a horrible 40 time but watch his highlight and he’s dusting people after the catch. 40 speed and Game speed are often two different things. 40 is just as much about technique and form as it is actual speed. I’m suprised they don’t just ditch the 40 and clock top speed and acceleration rate at the combine(I’m sure they do but the 40 is what gets talked about)
At 3:54 when talking about if Emmitt Smith benefited from Larry Allen.... The answer is Definitely! Although he has the most rushing yards in NFL history but many people don't consider him to be a top 3 RB of all time because He benefited off of so many great players that most great running backs don't have the privilege of.
Some people are idiots. Emmitt was winning rushing titles before Allen came along.
Larry was an absolute beast but Emmitt had 3 rushing titles and Dallas already won 2 SB before Larry was drafted.
Larry Allen should be Higher on this list. Offensive Linemen are criminally overlooked.

Funny thing about this compilation is that almost all the players larry allen blocked in that video were future hall of famers. Sapp, Randle, White, Thomas, Greene. Just gold jacket after gold jacket and he man handled all if them.

I loved Larry Allen. NFL is a team game and the unsung heroes never get enough credit. However, everyone recognized Larry as one of the best OL ever.
NFL Films is half the reason I became a diehard football fan. The Cowboys won two championships before they drafted Larry Allen (and added a third). You've probably seen the play but now you have context: you gotta watch when Larry Allen chased the linebacker down the field on the interception. There's also a great clip of the great Reggie White wrecking Larry Allen's shit with his patented move :)

I saw a report once that defensive first contact on Emmitt Smith was 2 yards beyond the line of scrimmage in those early 'Larry Allen' years - and then 2 yards behind the line of scrimmage later in his career without that rare offensive line he had early on in his career. Definitely makes a difference

Incredibly fast for his size and power. Like freakishly fast. He was one of the best pound for pound athletes among football players of that era. Offensive linemen are chronically overlooked for their contributions to their teams, but Larry Allen (and Nate Newton and others) were major parts of the Super Bowl success of the Cowboys throughout the 90's. They had an incredibly dominant offensive line. They would manhandle opposing defenses and were way too explosive off the ball for their size, punching huge holes for Emmett Smith and leading crushing up-field blocks. Troy Aikman, Emmett Smith, and Michael Ivrin owe a huge portion of their successes to these offensive linemen.
Larry was 6'3" 325lbs. I remember when the Cowboys drafted him and I thought, "Where the hell is Sonoma State?" It's a shame he only got one ring. Blame Jerrah for that.

To me, the best analogy I ever thought of was that the offensive line of an NFL team is a lot like your body's immune system. If your immune system breaks down, your vital organs will be affected and could also shut down. You could say the coach is the brain, the QB is the heart, the RBs and WRs are like the legs and arms; etc. If the immune system breaks down, the rest of the body won't function properly either. There really isn't anything more important than a healthy immune system, it's the first line of protection; thus the same goes for an offensive line being the first line of protection for the skill position players.

His step back was because it was a passing play - offensive linemen cannot cross the line of scrimmage before a pass is thrown.

This whole series was really good, Johnathan Ogden is another mammoth human whose video you might enjoy. I really enjoy seeing the lineman play, it's integral to the game but few people pay attention to it.

They didn’t show arguably one of the best plays by an offensive lineman ever! Larry Allen chased down a linebacker after Aikman had thrown an interception. Tremendous athlete for his size
Football is won in the trenches. As a teams offensive and defensive line go, the team goes. They are the foundation of their units.
He played for one year at a near by Community College, was not a pretty sight on the opposite side of the ball.
Larry Allen was listed at 6'3" and 325 pounds. So not the biggest guy to ever step on the field but he is a big boy that's for sure.
Look at Emmitt Smiths Highlight and decide if he should be considered among the best. I believe so. That being said, I definitely think he benefited from the great o-line. Heck , take advantage of what is there. Football is a team sport, and the team, along with his abilities, got him the record. Not the best running back but among the best.

Yall should check out his linemate Nate Newton who got caught with 1k lbs of pot in total. The Redskins had thr best Oline in the NFC east in the 80s and beginning of the 90s then the Cowboys had the best. Both prolific winner. Also Brandy at least when he was with the Pat's spoiled his Oline when then did great.
They left out the greatest play when he ran down one of the fastest players there was. For that size he moved like a damn gazelle

The answer is no. E. Smith wouldn't have done half the stuff he did without Allen. Absolutely not. Smith was really slow actually. He was fortunate to have Allen.

I believe Jay Cutler would have had an at least comparable career to Troy's had he had Troy's elite offensive line throughout his career. Jay Cutler was physically and statistically superior to Troy Aikman in almost every category but interceptions and sacks - the latter largely due in part to very poor protection.

Of course he contributed.. hes highly regarded as the greatest offensive lineman in nfl history.. buuuuuuuuuut Aikman, Irvin, and Smith were already back to back defending champions before Allen got there..
Yes those cowboys were great but slightly overated skill wise individually because they had so many weapons that teams couldn't just focus on one guy. Unlike someone like Barry Sanders who was the only great player on that team. But #34 Sweetness. Goat of football.

larry was a guard not a tackle. Guard is a less athletic position than tackle.
