I was expecting Kai to rip this one apart (with humor) but quite the contrary I think Kai actually get's the point of the camera which is refreshing. :) And I agree with him, the spirit of trying new things in design should never be trampled on.

This camera is so incredibly important at the moment. Nikon and Canon are trying to build mirrorless cameras and have to decide between the existing lens mount and a new one. This camera shows how a mirrorless with DSLR lenses could look like...
BIG FACTS!
Got this in baby blue just for the fun of it. It does a great job as a camera, and gets a lot of attention when out. I still like the viewfinder on my K3, but this is fun. I like the style, many don't, but that's what styles are about. It joins my Q7 (yellow) on the fun shelf.

I have this camera converted to full spectrum and it has taken some ridiculously amazing photos.
I think this video is the first and only Lok's editing fuck up ever.

I have just tried a vintage self focusing lens on mine and its different in a positive way .
i appreciate pentax expanding the usage of K mount. now i can have a chance to use my K mount lenses on a mirrorless camera. that's wonderful.
I am a serious guy but enjoyed this humourous presentation. So different from all other cameras reviews.
I feel like this is a fair review of the camera. It's a very fun to use camera that has great IQ, though not the best performer in terms of speed. For those who want a cheap solution I'd really recommend looking at this camera.
It's good enough to really get you into photography, but it's lacking in just the right places to make you want more in the future when you expand and know what you need. This camera plus the Pentax-F 35-70mm would be able to serve any novice amazingly for quite a while, at a very very cheap price point.
Nice image at 9:12 on a subject in the dark. Kai took some great photos with this camera on the fly.
Even for things I'll never myself pickup I watch your videos just to watch DigitalRev.
This is way better than the E-M5 review. It's actually entertaining and informative, not a long-running rant.

I Like my Pentax K-01
Have to add that the space that mirror left inside could be use screw focus to the inside and not to outside with the posibility to have more compacts lenses. Brilliant Pentax!
So many Pentax haters in the comments... Ridiculously overlooked this past years, Pentax is however, awesome and Ricoh might be one of the best thing that happened to Pentax in a long time.
This K-01 is not flawless but has certainly great features, it's bulky because it's totally retro-compatible with a huge legacy of lenses. It is the first one of its kind.
Plz, do a K-5 vs K-30 combined review !
Just bought it and it performs just as good as my D5100. Biggest issue is no view finder. New firmware is great. Huge price reduction. Isn't that big in my hands because I am probably 3x as big of a guy as Kai. The design is fresh, any real artist can see that. Video is better than most cams under $1000. Really any camera comes down to extremely high end AF lenses with top grade memory cards and of course the person behind the camera. Those are the real reasons behind great digital video.

I can't understand why people always think it's either one or another with form and function. Great designs take both into consideration. For example, Leicas look good, because they use great materials and the camera itself is as pure as it has been for many decades. Timeless is the word. As for function, well to me its beauty derives from its obviousness in function. It all just plays together really.

As Pentax K-01 keep the original flange distance between sensor and the lens produce to have more DOF than common MILC. Because of making thinner the flange distance, common MILC get similar results as P&S, but with better optic. Pentax take the challenge to compress the fragil part of a DSLR, the lens, without a worse handling(grip).

The floppy flap would be a definite dealbreaker for me. The USB/cable release port cover on my 400D annoyed me to no end.
I'm quite amazed that after Kai changes, holds a yellow camera, has Alamby and Lok follow him, and purposefully looks and acts ridiculously, still hardly anyone looks at them.

Complaints about ergonomics are exaggerated, especially the supposed difficulty reaching the green button (not) and closing the flap (easy). K-01 has a refreshing form factor, he finally says, and the flap closes easily. Complains about autofocus without mentioning innovative focus peaking. Marc Newsom did a good job with Pentax brilliant realization that mirrorless retention of K-mount required innovative design. K-01 hits the target right on the bullseye. I'm enjoying mine immensely.
For the same reason guitarists and bassists buy instruments that aren't Fender or Gibson.
Variety is a great thing, and the competition it generates is even better, especially from the consumer side.
Even if i do own a Canon, i also enjoy having more choices.
Been researching a dslr to purchase for months now and I'll tell you what, the Pentax K30 just seems to offer more camera for the money not to mention the K5...Nothing matches it in it's class, speed, build quality, weather sealed,great picture quality, and nice lenses available.
Pentax managed to fit 30+ years of lenses into a mirrorless camera...DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!
The K5`s replacement will give Canon and Nikon engineers many sleepless nights. At least the work stress wont be as bad as the folks over at Foxconn.

I like the way it looks. It's different and not bland like what Canon and Nikon make. I think it would be great if you could choose your own colour.
I have this banana camera and I love it!!! Putting a full size lens does spoil the look but over all nothing else is sexier!

Interestingly, across Victoria Park (where the opening sequence was shot), there's a Furniture Store not far from the Park Lane Hotel -- that would probably have Marc Newson chairs or lamps on display.

I @ replied you guys earlier in the week and said I hated this camera. It's not so much the design, which is kind of cool, it's that they removed the mirror but didn't shorten the mirror box. They could have kept the same mount and given away an extension tube with the camera, and developed some great lenses taking advantage of the short flange distance. I know Pentax have had some troubles, but they jumped into mirrorless with a thoughtless technical design.
Also no EVF :(

This isn't Pentax's small mirrorless camera though. They have the Q for that. This is a mirrorless camera aimed at the DSLR market and having seen one they are built pretty solid. I just wish they had a view finder.

I never wrote mirrorless==thin, but I can put my E-PL2+20/1.7 in my pocket. That's normally all I need as it has a built-in flash and no adapter is needed because there are many m4/3 lenses.
A mirrorless can be smaller, lighter, and/or cheaper because the lack of a flapping mirror and OVF; see the PEN's, NEX's (some with same 16MP sensor as K-01), etc. Nothing against Pentax, especially that I almost bought a K-5, but the K-01 doesn't seem to have anything going for it, except for the designer.
The best camera design so far. Why be like others? It's pentax way, they always do different products. And that's good in these days when everything looks the same.

im going to grab one of this for $ 200 xD Its a pice of... history and i really like the design. Its not a serious camera but it have the capabilities to take great photos.
So grab a nikon d2397923 or canon or any brand camera, it doesn't matter if you do shit photos xDDD

Actually the DA 40 XS 'kit lens' for the K-01 is based on the DA40 Limited, which is one of the sharpest modern K-mount lenses (see Photozone for evidence). In fact the optics are the same - they just made the lens body smaller and plastic.

I had this camera for 3 weeks and had no problems with it. It's very good,but it's heavy.

Newson did a good job because...the camera has caught peoples' attention, and for every hater there will be those who'll like it. Personally, the style isn't the issue, and the IQ is superb; lack of viewfinder is why i won't consider buying.
Thank F you actually did PENTAX at some point! Please do it again.

i thought photography was super boring before i found this channel!
The mode dial is completely out of reach for people who like to change modes while they are shooting. Furthermore, the green button is unreachable for people who have no writsts.
The dpreview site has a comparison between mirrorless cameras. The K-01 comes out quite decently imho
i'm a canon boy and find this a great camera!!all haters just reconsider its specs and you'll see the same banana but with the specification of a mid-range dslr!! not to mention that according to dxomark its dynamic range and colors are better than m9!!Cheers!!
As professional from design an architecture area, I tell this camera will prevail in history and not nostalgic shitty like OMD5's, made for sad old rich people.
Form over function puts it into a market segment for people who value the appearance of the camera over what it can actually do, regardless of it can change lens. Therefore the majority of people who bother to pay for this thing are likely never going to take it out of automatic. Therefore, it's essentially a point and shoot for hipsters.
I really like this camera. It is different and does great pictures. The only negative point is for me the missing Vf, but with such a design who cares about VF. I think I'll get one.
It's not pretending to be a dslr, so people need to stop comparing it to one. The single control dial is fine, just hold down a button to use it for aperture... As for the design, it's not for everyone but I think it's sick. Also, mode dial placement? No one needs to change mode that often. I'm sure you'll find a spare 2 seconds to lift your hand and turn it.
At least this design makes me feel I can toss it around and it will still survive
I must say it looks a bit better with the standard pentax lens on it. im still not used to it with the pancake lens..
You can easily get one; Sony NEX 7, Fuji XPro1, Lecia M8, M9, there are heaps of cameras that have it.
like fuij with the x100s, pentax could have produced something with more retro looks to build up on their rich heritage dating back from the k1000, instead they wasted their efforts on this
A fair review highlighting the strengths of the K-01. I only with the boys at Pentax made the K-01 look more like the Fuji Ex-1. It seems with Pentax being the out of the box leader, they would have went with a retro inspired looking camera.Nonetheless, the camera can be had for a steal online, which makes discovery of its true virtues more likely.
I use an old Pentax Spotomatic for B/W. Great to see Pentax breaking some new ground. I actually might consider this camera if it comes at a reasonable price.
personally, I think Pentax thinks different...this camera and the Q are not boring cameras...Pentax is the underdog in this whole competition...love the camera, but I would choose the black one or the silver one....this yellow camera is for my wife.

besides the audio level, the video is pretty good looking. Image looks really stable! Too bad it came from such a thick, yellow box!!
