    For those who likes phonetics, it's the [ʐ] sound, but for those who are wondering why words like 二 (pinyin: èr; it means two) or 儿 (pinyin: ér; it can be used as a suffix in Northern China, but it also means son) sound like R in American English, that's because at the end of a word it's basically the curled pirate version [ɻ] ^^

      I am a native Mandarin speaker. Honestly, this sound varies the most by accent. If you just pronounce it with the standard English “r” sound, no one will notice or think you have an accent. It’s your vowels and tones that will make you sound like you have an accent.

    The same as /ʒ/ sound in "deciSion", and if you pronounce "sion" in the rising second tone, it becomes rén (people) in the word "RMB".

      Actually, it's a [ʐ] sound, the voiced version of /sh/ [ʂ]. The /s/ in decision is, indeed, a [ʒ] sound, but that's just a /j/ in Portuguese or French, although it's really similar to the Mandarin Chinese one

    English Tutorial: Make SH sound and make it voiced.
    Russian: Just say "Ж" (We already have a letter for this sound, so XDD)

    • @sapphoenixthefirebird5063
      @sapphoenixthefirebird5063 2 роки тому

      The vowel after the pinyin R also resembles the Russian Ы, so "zi ci si zhi chi shi ri" are basically "цы цʰы сы тшы тшʰы шы жы". Except that Russian orthography doesn't allow "жы шы", so "цы цʰы сы тши тшʰи ши жи". Also, "ji qi xi" = "чи чʰи щи".

  • @prim16
    @prim16 Місяць тому

    This was actually the most useful tutorial I've had on it. It's just a voiced Chinese sh sound! I approximated the R sound for 人 (rén), but then noticed I was unable to make the sound with any other vowel following (like in "ru"). It turns out, that's just because my tongue was in the wrong position when approximating the R sound. Thank you for this!

    Best explanation!!!

  • @MystiqWisdom
    @MystiqWisdom 6 років тому +29

    I watched a few other videos on this and I think I can provide a straightforward cue without such detailed and possibly confusing tongue positioning instructions.
    So the sound is produced basically like you're trying to blend a "j-r" sound, which exists in English but is executed differently. So for "person" in Mandarin you need to say "jrun", but you need to extend the j sound like you're slurring your words, make it VERY soft and almost nonexistent. It becomes more like "jjjrun". It sounds better in a sentence like "Are you Chinese?" because it flows from the previous word. I guess it's like saying English words like "drug" or "drum" but you're really slurring the initial sound.
    ** Hmm, I need to revise this. The sound seems to be more like a very short "yur" before the word. The instructions in this video are actually pretty helpful, but I'm trying to present it in a different way. So for "person", it sounds like "yur-run" but the first syllable is very quick and not emphasized. It's like making the sound all in one's throat, but makes a word like "ri" pretty awkward.

  • @Retrosenescent
    @Retrosenescent 2 роки тому +1

    So when it's at the BEGINNING of a word, it's essentially the exact same thing as an English J except the tongue is slightly more curled back/higher in the palate. Otherwise they sound essentially identical. And otherwise at the end of a word it's just an r sound.

    • @qevian

  • @crumbum2
    @crumbum2 4 роки тому +4

    All these 'r' videos are about /how/ they say the 'r' sound. I was wondering if anyone knows of any Chinese words that use the 'r' sound, maybe with a different Chinese character. Not how they say it, but if it exists in Chinese speech in the English form via another symbol.
