I like the fact that humanity is always united, combative and civilized in these stories, I don't think humanity will react like that, but oh well: the wish is the mother of the thought.
When an existential threat comes for humanity we band together. We have a a golden age, we fall into arguing and war until the next big existential threat comes along. I have a feeling that a space faring humanity is going to factionalize but when push comes to shove we put aside our differences and bully the enemy
That was a good realistic look at the possibility of alien interactions. No super-human abilities, just plain humans, as flawed and stubborn as we are.
Maybe not. Remember, the Rakheti had been on Earth for some time, had granted us knowledge, and become good friends. The sense that we owed them and wanted to return the favor (aka reciprocity) is a very strong motivator that exists across human cultures, and could have pushed humanity to protect them.
@@procerusgigas While this is possible humans also have a stubborn streak of don't tell me what to do. Look at the mask mandate during the Big-C, or the YT ad-blocker war. YT had successfully increased the use of adblock software almost twofold simply by telling people not to do it.
aliens: We are are more advanced than you, surrender! humans: Out of all the species there are, you challenged the ONE species that has been constantly at war for centuries, you just made a VERY BIG mistake.
A species who specializes in ASYMETRIC WARFARE. and when we have the technological advancement we play war games with highest difficulty so that we learn from losses through impossible odds.
This is an incredibly well thought out story. No overpowered, super agressive humans, just humans being humans. The hubris of the alliance is realistic and their eventual downfall well written. Well done, Rick.
Great pro-human story without the fancy stuff. I am tired of stories that make humans the bad guys. We are flawed, but we are intrinsically benevolent. These stories are the best stories

They forget that they have come to this place through two million years of evolution, struggle and blood. That they are better than they think, and nobler than they know. Yep, like in a lot of these stories, they really should have studied OUR history. Because when you look at what we have done to each other, our own species, pause and ponder what horrors we will unleash on you.
I like the message. The other galactic races fall over for them, since that is the 'right' and 'logical' choice of the moment. None of them think ahead to what it will be like when things like this happen, or that they will keep going. And that IS the point. The Triple Alliance was far away, their enemies weren't a threat. But they came anyway, since they weren't satisfied with merely 'winning'. They had to 'crush' these people, like all bullies. Humanity's history is full of people like this, and we look farther ahead than a single battle, or even a single war. We look ahead to the next war, and the one after, and know that somewhere, you have to draw the line, and with people like this, who have demonstrated they will never be 'bought off', it's time to make them pay for ever parsec.
A very wise old man said about fending off blustering fools, speak softly and carry a big stick. I'd say this tale is definitively all about the Jaumon alliance getting the stick alright. You know we are seeing the lesson of giving the bully what they want play on the world right now. The bully wanted more and more each time, eventually Ukraine said no, before they were with nothing left to fight with, but they had given away enough they needed help. The bully is now showing the cracks in his eggshell. Grow strong to fend off the bullies, but never become one in turn. For if you do your fate is sealed.
