Pilgrimage to Dar's single screen cinemas of yesteryears!

  • Cinemas are an integral part of us. A medium through which we live our dreams and unwind from our daily stressful lives. All major cities nowadays have atleast 1 location where you will find a multi-screen cinema and is often the only entertainment venue for most.
What I am confident about is that the experience of the 'good old days' and watching movies in a single screen cinema was much much much better than what we have now. There were no airconditioned theatres, no comfy seats, no e-tickets, etc. I remember queuing up to buy the tickets and often ended up buying in the black market.
Going to a movie used to be the highlight of the week. Walking in large groups, the fun, the banter.... sharing a bag of chips, peanuts, a drink... the whole experience of going to the movies was just so amazing!
Dar-es-salaam single screen cinemas are confined to history now. I took the time to visit the spots where the main 6 cinema halls in Dar used to be ie Empress, Empire, Odeon, Cameo, New Chox and the last one to close down - Avalon. There were others like Starlight and Amana but the above 6 had a different standing and history.
Enjoy a trio down the cinematic memory lane!

You have taken me to my 60 years back to a memory lane, exactly how knew Dar' then. Through the cinemas that I loved so much. So much has changed. But those monumental landmarks, still there, to identify !
    Nice to share.

Thank you for making the time and effort in making these videos - it was as if I was with you. I went to Dar exactly a year ago - first return trip having left in 1972. I went looking for the old cinemas sites but only found them through your videos! I remember the Empire with its high dose of spaghetti westerns, and going for an ice cream after a film at the Avalon - a real treat! You are so right - l like you live in London but my heart is left behind in Dar. Thank you for bringing back some sweet memories.

Thank you Altaf and Natasha for helping us to bring back so many wonderful memories. Thank for taking Agrey St to show me Nikko Tower Hotel and Samora Ave by the Clock Tower as that is where we stayed in the apartment buildings. You are awesome and went above and beyond on your visit to Dar for us all. Huge HUGS my friend and safe trip back home. The lockdown here in Toronto is on and our numbers are getting out of control for hospitals to manage the cases. Please be careful, stay safe and blessed always. We are so grateful to you and your wonderful tours. You know all the ins and out of Dar which made your tours ever so interesting. Your commentating was exceptional. THANK YOU!!!

Nostalgic memories, the place of chidhood growing up, friends and families. Those cinema houses, I wanted to know a time line of when they existed. Even an idea of the decade. My guess is that when VCR and Betamax came, the cinemas could not compete.
I also have fond memories of cinemas in Uganda, during my childhood in the 1960's to 1972. We had an Odion cinema in our town Jinja. I think the same owners owned the one in Dar. The other was the Rex and Town cinema. Thanks for sharing.
