- Slipknot officially formed in 1995 with founding members Shawn Crahan, Joey Jordison and Paul Gray. The members that would come to form one of Slipknot's first line-ups would also include musicians from various other bands in the area of Des Moines, Iowa, the bands official birthplace.

Jim Root played guitar for Atomic Opera, Joey was destroying the drums for Thrash band Modifidious and Shawn Crahan formed Heads on the Wall, playing a mix of funk metal cover songs.
Slipknot have become known for their now iconic on-stage imagery and outfits that consist of jumpsuits branded with a barcode, terrifying masks and instead of names, they all each have a number.
And whilst each member generally reveals a new mask with each album cycle, the jumpsuits have been fairly consistent throughout the band's career. However, some would argue that Slipknot stole these ideas from another band that formed a couple of years prior to them.

Let’s be real though, both Mushroomhead and Slipknot were inspired by early Mr. Bungle. And early Mr. Bungle were just piggybacking on ideas that The Residents had already used decades ago.
It was Mr Bungle and Idiot Flesh pretty much that influenced the masks. Id say Mr Bungle used more of the music ideas from the Residents rather than the aesthetic.

In 98 my band opened for a larger band coming through town & while talking to the band's manager I told him my band originally wanted to dress up as Michael Meyers, Jason Voorhies, & Pinhead. He asked if I'd heard the Slipknot stuff yet and/or heard of Mushroomhead. I said no clue what you're talking about. He told me a label put together a band that's gonna be wearing masks & matching suits after they tried signing Mushroomhead. He said the label was mad they were turned down so they decided to make their own version. Annnnd here we are today
That is the actual story. It was all Roadrunner saying "fuck you" after Lowballing Mushroomhead. Mushroomhead got on Interscope but Roadrunner never stopped trying to mess with them.
I can confirm that the story is true. Furthermore, Roadrunner Records offered Mushroomhead a completely awful deal that was considered highway robbery back in the 90’s, nevermind how ridiculous it would be today.
There’s a documentary and podcast by filmmaker Chad Calek that documents the beginning stages of Slipknot. Being that the filmmaker is from Iowa and played in the local metal circuit, he was plugged in to what was going on. It’s pretty interesting, I highly recommend checking it out!
Lordi came before Mushroomhead. Gwar came before them all.

Not true, Mushroomhead started in 1993, 3 years before Lordi in '96.. But yeah Gwar is the oldest, from the early 80s
@@CarpeDiem23 Lordi formed in 92 n regarding masks n Mushroomhead, half their members used face paint early on. Only like 3 members actually wore masks the rest had that "militia" type face paint.
Nowadays Mushroomhead have the best masks though. The eyeball hands mask n the Roman emperor mask are brilliant.

So there is a Real Story. Mushroomhead Turned down Roadrunner so they went to Slipknot and told them to wear Masks and Jumpsuits. With the Success of Slipknot, Mushroomhead went back to Individual Masks copying Slipknot. Full Circle. I prefer Mushroomhead.

All I've ever cared about is the music. Slipknot got big because they put out significantly better music than Mushroomhead in my opinion, and apparently a lot of other people's opinion as well. My cousin burned me a CD back in 99 that had a few Slipknot songs on it and I absolutely loved the music. I had no clue whatsoever that they wore masks or anything like that at the time, and when I found out after seeing them on TV I honestly didn't care at all. As long as the music is good I could care less whether or not they show up with masks and jumpsuits, suits and ties, or even pink dresses.
I know you're just stating what has already been said so I'm not directing this toward you. But like the Burger King lawsuit told Slipknot. They didn't invitent the concept. And Nathan 's (Joey) mom had a Caesar mask when he was a child and Shawn showed up to practice in one a LONG time ago. So no way in hell did they "steal ' fungusheads idea. Stay SIC 🤘🤘🤘

Nah, Slipknot has ONE Great Album (self titled), one pretty good in Iowa, then just a few good songs here and there. Mushroomhead has a legit 4-5 Albums of nothing but Bangers at their peak. They fell off after Beautiful Stories, but they had an amazing run. Slipknot's Self Titled DEFINITELY is a very good album, but I'd put Mushroomhead's Peak a lot higher than Slipknot's. Slipknot was just the Label's Pet rather than pissing off a Major Label.

Why so many simultaneous inventions? Radio, electrical motors AC n DC, microchip, the stratosphere, ATM, oxygen, jet engine, polycarbonate plastic, film projectors, telephone, When the mass has the exact same tech we adapt, we have a mimic byproduct of evolution.
Mr Bungle and Idiot Flesh were the original crazy costume people. Mr Bungle been at the masks since 1991.
At least these bands don't wear make up like they are beautiful women like rockers did in the 80s and wierdos in California do today.
I mean, perhaps it’s possible that the matching jumpsuits came about as a way to polish and round out their look. But don’t we think that the higher-ups at Roadrunner just liked the idea of having a heavy theatrical band singed to their label because it will attract attention? Instead of the conspiracy theory about Roadrunner literally creating Slipknot? There’s footage from several years before they were signed of them playing shows in masks.
I'm a huge fan of both Slipknot and Mushroomhead since the 90s, and I literally never thought that there was any 'theft of ideas' going on. Not even once.
One big fun fact is that both Paul and Pig Benis wore pig masks in the early days.

Let's be honest, Slipknot's masks were a selling point, but not above their music. Early Slipknot was so successful because it resonated so harshly, and deeply, with the kids at the time (myself included). That angst, unfettered anger and hate was an outlet to the consumerist bullshit world which is now so heavily ingrained. For me personally, Slipknot was my release. Screaming along to "Liberate", "Eeyore" and "People = shit" was relieving and oddly, revitalising. It latched on to something that was insidious and allowed a means to vent. I'll never forget the way that music helped me, saved me! The 'knot will always remain as my #1 band of all time, despite my musical taste softening over time.

I'm still not sure why the comparison to mushroomhead is there. The music is ENTIRELY different. In general all of the mushroomhead masks have the iconic X on them. The only two really similarities are the 'uniformed' jumpsuites, and the fact that both bassist wore pig masks. from my point of view, the similarities end there.
Having masks or makeup and similar matching outfits is something thats been happening since kiss and im not saying that cause i love slipknot cause im not even really a fan of them i just like maybe 3 songs from them but nobody owns the idea of wearing masks or jumpsuits or anything like that...lol right as im making this comment and vout to hit post they start talking about Kiss thats cool

Wow, it literally was Mushroomhead. I thought that would be way to predictable and since this has been said since like, the 90's I really didn't expect anyone to make a video about this...
Slipknot did not copy them, the internet wasn't great in 1993/1995, Ohio and Iowa are very far apart. Both bands did not know of the other and just simply had the same idea. Doesn't mean anyone copied anyone. Not even a slipknot fan anymore, just thought I'd share the facts
I think it was pure coincidence nobody onew who was going to be bigger first if it were the other way around slipknot would be saying the same thing as Mushroomhead
Good ideas are always copied. But, those who do it best get the most out of the ideas.
Slipknot had masks in 1995, and jumpsuits and numbers before they were signed. Wearing a mask and playing music is something that tribes used to do, and still do. Slipknot didn't steal the idea.

Slipknot copied Mushroomhead...but it was at the Label's Orders. Roadrunner tried signing Mushroomhead but Lowballed and got denied. So, Roadrunner signed Slipknot to that deal and told them to do the masks and Jumpsuits. The Music however is much different between the two with the exception being both are Nu Metal. Both Bands are Great, though I will every time take Mushroomhead's Prime over Slipknot. Slipknot always peaked with their Self Titled for me. Mushroomhead obviously X3 and XX were the Peak.
Being a Slipknot fan living in Ohio, I am so tired of the Mushroomhead fan war. The two bands started up independently. They sound nothing alike. And this is just MH fans butt hurt that Slipknot made it big by working their asses off.

Is there anyone in the world who doesn't get their ideas or inspiration from someone else that they look up to or think they can do better than? Everyone copies/steals/gets inspired by something other than themselves, either by nature or intentionally. Everyone copies MayheM from what I've noticed, in reality everyone is copying the archetype of God/Jesus/Satan/Devil etc..God figures.
