A group of Satanists even invited Black Sabbath to play a show at the coveted StoneHenge to which the group refused. The very name, Black Sabbath, can easily denote links with the occult or at least an attempt to oppose traditional religion. The word Sabbath is by definition, "a day of religious observance”. It is a day dedicated to practising faith and worshipping whatever god you believe in.
You also have the witches sabbath, said to be a day for Witches to gather in order to practise witchcraft and other rituals. So based on the name alone, this could have given Satanists the idea that Black Sabbath were indeed practising some sort of Witchcraft or Satanism.
The band, though, say the name is far more innocent, taken from the Mario Bava 1965 film called Black Sabbath where a Russian count encounters a family trying to destroy a line of vampires. Which, back then, would still seem like a very dark and supernatural concept. So combine this with the actual music of Black Sabbath and it’s easy to see why at the time the group attracted people that practised the occult and Satanism.

There is more satanic stuff in pop music then metal music any more metal is more shock but pop music musicians admits satan has gotten them where they are at metal music is more about corruption of the government and the industrial war complex
Amen to that
Little more? 😂
Everyone tends to target heavy metal music. When most of the biggest pop artist's today can be accused of the same.
literally what i thought. I grew up in 2000s on pop music and then were many pop stars and popular tv reality stars that were in big dramas because they wanted money and fame, even tho they were falling apart of drug addiction, abuse, and felony charges. Also claiming they are " Christians" and proudly wearing crosses.
They are being accused. in fact, none of the Satan in te music industry videos vore the past 10 years do NOT include any heavy metal bands
I'll give an amen to that!
They’ve been back masking Satanic songs since the 1950s!

I was subject to the Satanic Panic by my parents to an extent. They tried to sensor what music I bought, but that didn't last long. I just didn't play my Venom, Slayer, etc albums when they were home. Otherwise I just got teased for having am earring and long hair and wearing all black. I heard a voice when I played "Stairway to Heaven" backwards. It said "Get a life, Dweeb."

@@ericsimoneau4818 that's why Black Metal exists.
Kind of a shame you barely mentioned what happened with Black Metal in the 90s. Hoping to see that in a future video! Your documentaries are of very high quality and definitely hope to see more of these
Thinking the same, this is a nice vide on the US Satanic Panic, but barely mentioned the Scandinavian Black Metal scene in 90's where actual crimes were perpetrated, rather than just some panicked parents blowing up smoke out of their ears, which face it, happens every time less main stream subculture comes in the lime light, like the EMOs later.
Mayhem should have been talked about during this even if they always said they were not Satanists just angry young men that took this story as far into insanity than any other band that was a so called Devil Worship type band . It was more as most of these bands were all about selling it to the fans to make money ,sadly for Mayhem it all went bad during those years they tried to make it as a viable Black Metal Band . They would have done much better concentrating on the music & not the crap they did which held them back & finally ended so badly . Yea they put the newer band together but it was not the one with Per Ohlin & more a show than the real Mayhem. I'll give them one thing they looked more the part than the silly assed sissy look most of the bands back then other than Sabbath & Slayer .
Rap is the new Heavy Metal which is obvious and I don't care one bit for either.

"The greatest trick Jesus ever played is to convince humanity that he and his father actually care for them and answer their prayers."
…he doesn’t exist.
@@thecleaner3559 I don’t believe Jesus was out to “trick” anyone. He was likely a genuinely kind and compassionate, albeit mentally ill, individual. Regardless of who he actually was, the fact remains that the man endured a brutal torture and death because he believed he was the son of god. There’s no way someone who was just out to deceive people would go through with that. He didn’t even try to run or fight, didn’t try to explain or plead his case, he just accepted that he was going to be executed. I think he genuinely believed that he was who he said he was.
The biggest and most powerful weapon of the Devil is to convince the people that he actually doesn’t exist.

Grew up with a Catholic upbringing from my European mom n non practicing dad . Played in heavy metal bands and other music for thirty years . There was a time my sister thought I was satanic. I was dark and creepy cool . But there was a point I had to check myself and not loose myself because things got darker . And people I partied with were in deep and seemed lost . The music changed to alternative and I played what the band was playing . Now I picked it back up and enjoy the energy of the hard stuff that made me a musician . I guess I'm saying is that you can loose yourself if you take it to far . I returned to Church and can appreciate all music . But haven't played Highway to Hell n . But play Have a Drink on Me . Some of it I don't have a taste for any more. Rock on!!!
Metal Music Molded Me into the Good icon presented in this comment.
A musician of Vietnam War era I am, and have always had a passion for Heavy Metal starting with Deep Purple & Black Sabbath.
I even brought my 1971 LP "Master of Reality" to school "show & tell" reading the lyrics of "After Forever" as proof that such is not satanic.
Since then many bands have utilized such symbolism for notoriety. However, other forms of music were in fact Be Coming EverMore blatantly Truly daemonic.
@@MrRIK325 Sobering reminder:
The only "transition" every soul needs is; transitioning from lies/darkness into the truth/light.
From religions into reality.
From being unsaved/wicked sinner into being saved.
From being deceived into being HEALED.
From being a salve into being FREE.
Therefore, souls, CRY OUT TO GOD and leave behind all masonic/satanic lies.
As none is trans nor male nor female in heaven, same in hell, no soul is trans nor male nor female.

Mark 12:25
For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.
Matthew 22:30
For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
Sinners shall have everlasting existence filled with agony.
Matthew 25:46 - And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
John 5:29 - And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
Matthew 8:12 - But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Revelation 21:8 - But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Saved shall have everlasting existence filled with LIFE:
John 10:10
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
John 5:29 - And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

It saddens me to see people get roped back into that horrible hate machine that is the church. I was once deluded by such things myself. I kind of dodged the panic, didn’t really get into metal till I was in my teens (90’s)

Saint, Sacred Warrior, Deliverance and Believer were cracking Christian metal bands from that era too. Hardcore fundies didn't like them either and of the view that they were using an ungodly medium to promote the Christian message. I recall the recently deceased Jimmy Swaggart denouncing them and I think it may have been Stryper or Barren Cross in particular. Jack Chick also put out an unflattering tract about a Christian metal band 'Angels' pushing the line that all rock and metal is the devil's music. A very simplistic yet unsubstantiated argument that has thankfully lost resonance since those days.

Great documentary and you made the connection with Metal to Satanism. One important point is Black Sabbath was heavily influenced by old blues music, one artist by the name Robert Johnson. He was a blues guitar player who was infamous for playing terribly with no talent. The story goes he disappeared one day and showed up months later. When he played his music, the audience was shocked at how good he was playing. One of his songs was called Crossroads which was later covered by numerous bands including Eric Clapton. Robert wrote that song based on the story of him meeting the devil at the Crossroads where he sold his soul in order to have talent to play the guitar.
Another connection-Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page involvement with Aleister Crowley (an individual involved with Black Magick) even buying Boleskin Manor.
I looked into the story about Robert Johnson but it seems to be a bit of a myth that other people made up, I hope it's true though!
@@RAWMUSICTV It's true according to Robert Johnson himself, he wrote three songs relating to his meeting with the devil, crossroad blues, me and the devil blues and hellhound on my trail.

Great educational video. I noticed organ music in the background and really enjoyed it. Is it a separate piece of music?
Hearing Highway to Hell - as a young kid - spooked me.
Then a year or so later Hells Bells - it spooked me.
The energy behind these songs was undeniable.
SUCH AWESOME SONGS TOO!!!
Highway to Hell sounded upbeat to me - not sinister
I cringe watching HtH live. People cheering and proclaiming the are on a HtH as if it’s a good thing.
great songs but i cant imagine taking them seriously as something about hell as an afterlife, that's just silly. HTH was about the hard-partying road lifestyle and HB's is simply an old exclamatory expression incorporated into lyrics.
They never influenced me that way, I was able to listen to these songs and just “accept” them as simply innocent music.
About a year or so ago, I decided to stop listening to music just to see how I would feel. I remember after maybe 3 months walking past a rock concert, that’s when I realised music is more powerful than what we think, I could feel myself being unsteady and becoming anxious. Music tampers with our emotions. I remember reading Pythagoras (I think) saying “music was a form of hypnosis”
I grew up listening to Manson in a strongly christian household…..you guys cannot imagine how many of my CDs my mother burned 😂
He made one good cd then went really pedo. Christians usually love pop music an preteens.

Man the 80s were a blast. It was easy to be cool and obnoxious at the same time back then. Just do ridiculous things that scare parents and have a great time while doing it. I miss those days
Hell yeah I was 15 in 1982 so it was all about hardcore and then metal a couple years later. Still into it
90s were better: church burnings, murder, band member skulls on necklaces and album covers, rituals and invocations
None of that pretend shit from the past :D
Grave Digger's album The Reaper had a huge effect on me getting interested in extreme music. For me it was a big change in how i saw / see music etc.

When I listen to Black Sabbath I'm listening to the music, Tony Iommi's unmatched riffs. 🎸
Golly, with songs like NIB, front cover art like the first lp, gatefold art like that coffin, album titles like We Sold Our Souls To Rock n Roll, I wonder why anyone ever thought they were devil worshippers..?
Sabbath almost had nothing to do with their album covers and artwork for the most part.
Read the lyrics and they actually warn against Black Magick, war and drugs.
@@babywah3290 I'm a big fan of the Ozzy years myself, but he did routinely ask their audiences "Are you high?? ARE YOU FUGGIN HIGH?!" at almost every concert I've heard (I used to collect their botlegs / live tapes) - I maintain Sabbath, like Zep with their Aleister Crowley business (and I love Zep, too), were trying to play both sides, or, as some people once said, 'have their cake and eat it, too.' I still think NIB is an amazing song...
@@erikt454 Hard drugs, ie., cocaine and heroin- Snowblind, Hand of Doom, Faeries Wear Boots for example.
@@erikt454 There is a story that Zakk Wylde showed a picture of Aleister Crowley to Ozzy and he had no idea who it was. As you may know, Ozzy didn’t write lyrics like most frontmen.
With Zeppelin it was Page who was into Crowley but not as serious I think as Crowley was nothing more than a charlatan who was a sex fiend and drug addict.
Even the Beatles used his image on the Sgt. Peppers cover, among other celebrities.
@@babywah3290 lol he was a lot more than that
I believe much of that ”devil cult” was a product of band managers, album cover artists and the record companies. Then it is somewhat sad that some band and artists tried to actually live up to those images.
but the music wouldnt sound right played by smiling people wearing bright colors.
The prince of the air , and when he was an angel named lucifer he can play every musical instrument to phenomenal ability
Where does it say in the Bible that he can play every musical instrument?
I knew about the Coven album but didn’t know it was the first time the 🤘was used on a cover. Heard that Dio came up with it and that Gene Simmons also claims he came up with the idea on the cover of Destroyer.
Gene Simmons invented everything if you ask Gene Simmons.
On the cover of "Destroyer", his hands were clenched fists. Around the "Love Gun time, he was using a hand sign which in sign language means "I love you", and not the same as the Il Cornuto Dio was using. Simmons -thumb extended outwards, Dio thumb touches middle fingers. Dio had said he got it from his grandmother.
There was also Arthur brown in the 60's who is a massive influence on metal bands, even decades later.
I agree; also Screamin' Jay Hawkins ;)
I come from the streets in the hoods of New York City & Long Island New York, so growing up with heavy metal, hip hop and Electronica the thing. But as we started getting into the late 80s and early 90s and my brother and I have started getting into trouble and since my parents couldn't figure out that it was probably my environment and broken home that play the big part in it they started thinking it was the music. Gangster rap and heavy metal was the reason we were acting up. And then one day I broke out a bunch of lyrics because you used to get those in your tape cassettes and CDs. You know when you bought an album A lot of times the lyrics were printed which was great because it actually helped. Sometimes you would hear things the wrong way whatever. And it was my grandmother of all people who was like wow this isn't satanic, this isn't promoting violence, etc etc etc. My grandmother was the first to realize it's like poetry, both heavy metal and gangster rap we're talking about real issues in which people go through in life. The first artists in which she read the lyrics were Slayer, Iron Maiden, Ice-T, KRS ONE.
And from that moment it went from having to hide these to being able to having them
My parents supported my love for metal right from the very start, they would take me to concerts and my mom's brother my Uncle John were die hard metal heads, always going to concerts and listening to the most brutal black & Death Metal bands we could find. R.I.P. Uncle John I miss you always, METAL FOREVER!!!!
I remember my dad making me break my white zombie CDs in the 90s as he kicked back jammin to Black Sabbath. I never thought about it as a kid but now I realize how hypocritical that was.
I think modern rap and hip-hop is every bet as evil and disturbing than any form of Rock ever was. Though I've personally, never been much of a Heavy Metal fan myself.
And pop prime examples are Beyonce and Lady GaGa!
@@NavyCook08 : Well, I'm not a fan of either, myself, actually. It's difficult for me to single out any one performer, because as far as I'm concerned, the entire scene is as iffed up and corrupt as all hell, even WORSE, than the worse forms of Rock, as far as I'm concerned, but it's mind blowing how no one speaks out against it as they did with Rock and Disco for example. The other thing that continues to baffle me to no end, is why oh why, we seem to find it so, damn, difficult to move beyond it now. I mean, rap and hip-hop have dominated pop music for the better part of 30, friggen, years now; there is absolutely, nothing new or original to it any longer, if there ever was at the beginning, and I think it's high, time for us to move beyond this insane, crap and dribble now. An entire generation has been poisoned with it and now they are raising a second generation to be poisoned by it. Sick and crazy beyond words.
Not a fan of rap and hip-hop. Never have been and never will be, and because of this I've gone my entire, adult, life now, with no, new, great, pop music to listen to, having to return to the classic Rock and Disco endlessly, because of it. Not right. Simply not right. So because of this now, I've turned to the pop music of the Asian countries, who have not yet, completely, sold out to this rap and hip-hop demon. At least here, we find far more variety than you'll ever, see in the modern, pop of North America or Western Europe. I can thank UA-cam for that much, at least.
🎯🎯🎯🎯 At this point, IMO the lifestyle and behavior of some rap artists has done far more actual harm than almost any rock/metal band I listen(ed) to…
@@ivanj.conway9919 yes rap is baffling..to me it's music one would pay to NOT listen to, just sheer torture to the ears and the fashions and attitudes look so dumb. It is a big reason why I have nothing in common with most people now and dont want to, it really is a poison.
@@tonyjones1560 yep, few deaths couldve been directly attributed to the metal lifestyle but my God it's like a huge war occurred if you add up the rap-inspired deaths and injuries and so many of them innocent people caught in crossfire.

Dad raised me on Venom, I turned out pretty gentle.
Cool Dad!
53 yr old woman here. Venom and satanic bible i n high school. Im ok.. Evil.. in league with Satan...
fun fact: the horn sign was introduced by a blues band called Coven. The same band inspired the legendary Black Sabbath and yes the horn sign in metal means exactly the apparent.
The horn sign means absolutely nothing about Satan. People have been programmed to think Satan is this red horned being with a tail and that's just not the case. The Bible says Satan comes disguised as an angel of light.
That hand gesture was around before then and has always been used by satanists. Which is why its fun to laugh at bands who use it and have no clue what it means
People assume the Dark Angel enjoys "heavy metal" but he actually much prefers a decent Jazz ensemble.
A year before "Welcome to Hell," Angelwitch and Witchfynde both released debut albums laden with occult imagery, the latter of which had a goat head in the cover, and both were pioneers of extreme metal (thrash and doom respectively).
Uhh hate to break it that its not specifically metal music you should be concerned with, its anything of any influence on people. Look at rap... Shit look at politics.... Even all the goofy religions that have risen recently.
But as the title suggests, this is only concerned with looking at Satanism in Metal.
That Lucifer show you mentioned is loosely based on the DC comics, where the character has been written throughout the last 40 years. This modern incarnation was a spinoff on the interpretation Neil Gaiman gave us in his Sandman run in the 80's.
It's crazy, people really think they are part of a concert, but they are actually at a Ritual celebrating Satan.
Music contains universal feeling to inquisitive listeners as all forms of art. You make it mean whatever you wish. It's an art form with infulence within anyone who possess the priveleadge of experiencing it. It's taken the back seat in terms of pop culture since it first exploded onto the scene, with respect. The evolution and influence has been beyond compare to any other genre. The roots have existed since life. Took thousands of years but once certain musics began merging along with a number of other puzzle pieces, ever since people are still trying to make it even edgier and harder, pushing the boundaries. It's fun to try wrapping one's head around. But yeah, good and evil is just the tip of the iceberg. A fascinating topic but there's a alot you haven't heard yet. Go find discover something you love
It is evil & satanic to the core - it will take most if you to a literal hell fire & brimstone. Each person will be cognizant of the hell you chose over Lord Jesus Christ - how SAD.
That KISS show with The Plasmatics opening must have been one hell of a show. Wish I saw that one. On the first sacrifice thing..... Ozzy biting off a bats head or King Diamond stabbing a baby doll on stage?
I'm pretty sure Alice Cooper decapitating baby dolls and himself onstage predated both of those "sacrifice" examples.

The rolling stones album "in her Majesty's satanic service" was a pretty shocking album title imo.
I was a teen in the 1980s. Churches would have evening services where the would play records backwards & show slides of the most evil album covers they could find. We would dress in our concert shirts and sit in the front. We were always nicer to them than they were to us.
I'm sure you could understand their caution though, yes?

An interesting phenomenon within the metal community is all the converts to Christianity. Many major and influential artists, absolute pillars of the genre converted to Christianity over the years. Openly christian artists include Alice Cooper, Dave Mustaine, and Zakk Wylde. Strange phenomenon.
