I thought it was because they filled the tires with fairly little air, say 15 psi in order to allow thermal expansion. In Stock Car Racing, waiting for the tire pressures to come up because of this thermal expansion is often referred to as “Letting the car come to you.”

I always thought the titanium bolts were places there to gauge downforces. Too many sparks meant you could lower the downforces a bit and not lose much performance. But I stand corrected.

F1 is truly unbelievable when it comes to burning money. There is always talk of cost cutting, etc, etc. But using a rare metal like titanium just to make sparks is pretty crazy. Between the 50 thousand pounds piston, five thousand pounds break rotor, all of it going to the bin at the end of the season, I sometimes wish F1 would truly get more basic and leveled, so we got back to a driver's championship and not a technology championship.

    • @peterherrington3300

Titanium is not a rare or particularly valuable metal.
I have 3 sports bikes in my workshop.
All 3 have full Titanium exhausts fitted as standard and can be replaced for only a few quid .

I think sparks just make your car look broken.
One time I was driving down the freeway and hit a rather large bump, my muffler mounts broke and I started dragging my muffler and all I could see in my mirrors were sparks. Had like 900 more miles to drive that day too. I lucked out and found an S hook thingy on the side of the highway which I used to rehang the muffler, then my car wouldn't start. After waiting for AAA for a bit and knowing there wasn't any shops close enough to get a free tow to, we ended up push starting the car which worked. Had to push it up a small hill first. Made it home without any more problems after that though.
