Your original Xbox burned out at same AC input point on underboard as mine! Caught in time when I heard sizzling and smelt burnt solder when I plugged in, immeadiately noticed slight wiggle to the cord input on XBOX, got to power board & turned over, and saw black burnt culprit. Luckily with some T959 flux and reworking solder into that and other side of the prong, AND resoldering the anchor points to left and right while holding input housing firm...she powered right back on perfectly! I advise not removing the power cord on the console side any more often then needed, as may put strain on the anchor solder points due to design and tight fit of cord. EDIT: Mine is original 1.0 revision if it matters.
My favorite Xbox game of all time is Halo Combat Evolved.
I am in the middle of re-assembling my original Year One XBOX and this vdeo comes up. Thank you for the tip!
Def Jam Fight for New York, thanx for your video!
Just bought a 1.1 XBox with a burned up power supply, the traces were charred and separated. Ordered another one and a capacitor kit from Console5 to rebuild it. Did the same with a 1.4 preemptively.
on versions 1.0 thru 1.4(5) the clock cap is not needed. not even to boot up a stock xbox.
version 1.6 needs it to boot and it's located in a different spot. removing it results in the xbox not booting.
you got me curious when you attached the string to the cap but i went OMG when you slammed the door. Nice one !
1.6 doesn't need a removal and will work forever, always make sure you know which version you're working on as they're night and day.
@@autobotstarscream765 I've had leaking clock caps on 1.6 as well. You better replace leaking ones before they cause trace rot and when a 1.6 ain't booting up checking on the clock cap won't hurt
My favorite Xbox game is Blinx The Time Sweeper
Removing the power supply connector from the motherboard is annoying. I feel like I could easily damage it. Is there any trick to avoid damaging it?
Seen any video's on replacing or fixing the power button? Tap the power button repeatedly and it will turn on. Also to get the disc drive to open ya gotta slap the top in a certain area and when it opens it wants to close so grab it. Gave my working one to a friend since i wasnt using it and now i wanna fix my spare parts one that works but has issues. Kinda a spare time project to fix it and try modding it for the NES emulators.
there is a better way reflow soldering work car 55w headlight bulb they take a lot of power you might need a car battery or strong bench power supply
Mine is making goofy high pitched noise I think I'm going to check it out before it destroys the whole thing
Hi Is better to clean the bottom side of motherboard also on that spot, often if there is acid from the time cap has leaked it is also on the bottom it is important to remove that is my experience.
There are very small holes in the motherboard so acid gets to the other side. I have seen boards that came out of the gpu the power takes acid on a journey where you do not want it, is extreme case but it happens.
will the board be a bit sticky after using the IPA?
I've got a burnt solder joint on my power board from a xbox that uses the original power cord (c. 2001). I happen to have a power board from a c. 2005 xbox that has a different power cord. Can I just switch out the power board and cords or will I have to resolder?
I got a 1.1 Xbox that by some miracle has a completely intact foxlink psu and a non leaking cap. Still pulled the cap out and reinforced the solder joints on the PSU plug. I ain't f***ing around with electrical fires.
I have one almost like yours, except it uses the Thomson optical drive. It's not turning on anymore, I replaced all the capacitors on the motherboard, and it won't turn on. Is there a way to test the power supply without the mainboard ?
I have an old Xbox original but it has the orange and green flashing ring what does that means
But you see yellow burnt orange on the solder points on your power supply. And not in this video
Nice intellivision collection..
I'm not far in the vid so this might have already been described but fun fact I heard from someone who's worked on hundreds of og Xboxes
Only the foxlink PSUs had the solder joint problem, I still reflow the joints on others anyway wial I'm Workin on a PSU though.
Another thing, the DVD Drives can also die & give your Xbox an error code 12.
My xbox when I hold the button so it could turn on for few seconds it makes noise but doesn't turn on I usually press the button it used to turn on normal I checked it inside nothing is leaking. Can you give me some tips of what it could be.
my xbox freezes after 5 min of playing i think its ovet heating any help
I got a xbox from October 2004 should I remove it?
Question! I have a mod-chipped Xbox classic that I bought in Holland when I lived there, where can I get a 110v replacement power supply so I don't have to keep using an external step up transformer?
Ebay
The o g original Microsoft Xbox is my favorite videogame system
The original Microsoft Xbox 1.0 used those crappy fox link power supplies if it's a 1.0 Xbox replace the power supply unit with a Delta electronics power supply unit also clear dust off the power supply and motherboard
My fav xbox is the first and 360
Any idea on anyone who does this in Denver Colorado. I’m not a tech guy at all and need some help getting my Xbox back on track so I can play the warriors lol please any suggestions would help
My Fav is Morrowind
Hi I have old original Microsoft Xbox just like that one my Xbox is modded
I remember I plugged mine into the wall and it starting making this loud clicking / sizzling noise right there I knew mine was broke
Blaine can I send my Xbox to you to fix it
11:55 It looks like there has been a leak around the "coil" at the top of the power supply board. Is it important ? I have several leaks like that on mine and wondering if it's the cause of the console not working, but I'm suprised you don't seem to point it out in this video. Am I wrong ?
That white goo is not leakage, that's epoxy that's meant to help keep that stuff in place, don't remove it! Two years late, but I thought I might as well respond.
@@hotstuffdx2891 Yeah thx, I learned in the meanwhile, don't worry I didn't touch it
If we resolder those 2 joints on the power supply like you did, does that mean we no longer have to only use the Xbox protection power cord?
No reason not to use it if you have it
I haven't turned on this Xbox in over a year and it just won't turn on at all for me
hi, my original xbox is making a high pitch elecrical hissing noise, sounds like dust burning, a crackle sort of noise that gets louder and louder in just a few seconds of the switch being turned on. im scared to leave it on more than a second or 2. Do you think i need a replacement power supply cable or this fix youve just done with the soldier? i heard xbox recalled the cables, will the old original cables work with your soldier fix. or do i need a new cable too? ive already took out the power store gel capacitor and cleaned the area. thanks for any help you can give me.
Had same exact problem today and fixed, check my comment up top on this video. Basically if you know how to solder, you probably need to solder the underside of the power cord input device on the power supply board where it burned one of the joints, or both. Then solder the anchors to each side to reinforce...does the little housing where the power cord plug into wiggle/move slightly? EDIT: If yours is 1.0 you may want to consider getting an altogether new power supply also, if this doesn't fix.
I opened it i clean all the dust but still wont open..
My original Xbox was made in "04"..will this work for my system as well?
You need to open it
Mine is also made in late 2004 and it's a 1.6 version meaning i do not need to take out the clock capacitor
It it’s from 2004, DO NOT remove the Time Capacitor, it’ll brick your console. Don’t worry, Microsoft stopped using the Faulty Capacitors beginning in March 2004.
10:10 you mixed up left and right, didn’t you?
monster garage
Will just fix the issue with Xbox from not staying powered on
how in the world did you get that single row power connector from the motherboard?? you skipped showing that step :(
I don’t think he did. Just two screws.
i have a 1.0 version, my tsop is flashed, should i still remove? pretty sure it was replaced already
Remove the time capacitor?
@@saudade_firefly yes the time capacitor
Any OG Xbox manufactured before March 2004; REMOVE the capacitors, they’ll rupture leaking Acid on your motherboard frying it.
seems like i have shorted my xbox console by trying to mod it, is there a way to reset it?
I just did that right now. Tried to hard swap hard drives and a little pop and fire happened.
@@PSUNATION in my case i was lucky. The adaptor and the hdd got fried only. So i just ordered the startech adapter a new hdd and now it works like a charm
@@bagos13GR that’s awesome. Which is weird I see no burnt spots near the plug at all. It looks just like my other Xbox. I wonder what I could replace to fix it.
@@PSUNATION well if you know how to check the capacitors with a multi meter , you can identify what seems to shorting the console? actually search on reddit of the original xbox, there are a lot of guys there that really knows how to fix problems
@@bagos13GR I have a multi meter. I’ll check it out. Thanks.
I have 2 favorite Xbox games 1 GTA San Andreas 2 new York city true crime
Hello Blaine,
I just opened up my OG Xbox a few days ago to replace that much talked about capacitor on the board but opened it up to find that multiple capacitors leaked a whole bunch of goop all over everything... Not much I could do with it from that point on. I decided to scrap it but keep the DVD Drive, Hard Drive and various cables/controllers. Planning on just going ahead and buying a refurbished one online to save myself the hassle. To be frank: never have I seen a more poorly designed circuit board for a console. That thing had capacitor juice all over everything and parts looked like they literally melted. it was horrific. Meanwhile my Dreamcast I only had to open it up once to fix a controller port since I bought it in 2008. And furthermore my PS2 and gamecube still run perfectly since the mid 2000s as well. It's all so bizarre how Microsoft dropped the ball with the design of this console but yet none of us found out until much later on.
rip
So far halo CE, soon halo 2
Remove the clock capacitor or it will leak acid on the motherboard and kill the Xbox
Unless it's a 1.6, always check which version of Xbox you have before working on it.
ONLY on the 2001-2003 models.
your jokes aren't funny! pls stop before you get a lawsuit at your door
