  • We unboxed two pastel 100% het piebald ball pythons from Tropical Tom's on MorphMarket. The result was less than desirable. We will be doing a couple followup videos on these snakes to keep people apprised of how they progress.

    Tropical Toms is local to me. He recently came out of the wood work and started vending at the local shows again. He has 2014 animals at shows that are easily under 400 grams. The guy is in it for the money. From the rumors I've heard he can't afford to feed his animals anymore so he's been trying to sell everything and make a profit. He's garbage, glad you did a video of the unboxing to prove that he's not selling truly healthy animals.

    • @KentuckianaExotics
      @KentuckianaExotics  6 років тому +34

      I really don't know where to start with this comment. If he can't afford to feed the animals, he shouldn't have them. If he sells some, he can feed the others. As for profit, you can make a profit in this hobby at a certain stage, but that's the wrong reason to really get into it. 2014's under 400 grams... I don't know how to comment in any positive light. How much does he typically have to sell?

    • @PugetSoundPythons
      @PugetSoundPythons 6 років тому +10

      Kentuckiana Exotics on the amount he sells at the shows I'm unsure. The show coming up mid July will be my first time vending and theres a vendor dinner so maybe I can chat with him and get a feel for the type of person he is. He has quite a few animals on his MM so it's quite possible hes getting out and selling everything he has. I agree you dont get into this hobby to turn a buck, you get into it cuz of your passion. Maybe at one point it was maybe it wasnt sho knows. Hopefully I can get some more info on this guy at the next show.

    • @KentuckianaExotics
      @KentuckianaExotics  6 років тому +20

      It's my hope that his animals are healthy, and just mislabeled... at this point, dishonesty of age is the best hope. I would rather not hope that his care is so poor that they are abused. If that is the case though, and it is seen at a show, hopefully it is reported to the authorities, and measures are taken to rectify the situation.

    • @PugetSoundPythons
      @PugetSoundPythons 6 років тому +11

      Kentuckiana Exotics unfortunately they are not mislabeled. I inquired about a smaller animal also hatched out in 2014 a while back and he never corrected my questioning on the hatch year. And the weight was only a few grams heavier then on the post, that he had posted several months before. Unfortunately, in the reptile hobby or really any hobby where breeding animals takes place you will find breeders who are in it for the check at the end of the day. Pretty sure breeders out here know better than to get involved with this guy. Not much we can do besides complain to the ppl who run the shows to keep him from coming back. But without any proof of the conditions they are actually in not much else we can do. Just make sure to post on the FBI page on Facebook so others know to avoid him.

      I couldn't believe they shipped in 40 degree (Fahrenheit) weather without a heat pack.
      I have a new person shipping me an animal this coming Tuesday. Now that the weather is hot, I am expecting a cool pack in the box, so that the snake doesn't fry. I talked to this keeper much more extensively since the last issues, and they seem to know what they are talking about. So sincerely hoping this unboxing goes much more smoothly. :)

      Kentuckiana Exotics, have you ever delt with BHB Brian ? I'm really wanting to get my son a snake for his birthday in August. We dont have enough money to get an expensive morph but a regular ball python isn't so far fetched. I already have a setup. I had a speckled king snake name King Luey. But one of my son's friends wanted him more than us cause he ended up stealing him from us. When the kid got him with the snake. His momma freaked out and made him release him. I think I was more upset with that snake than any dog I have ever had. Now i love all animals except ANTS!!!! Thank you any help would be awesome.

      I have talked very briefly with Barcyzk, and he was very easy to get along with. He knows his animals, and will leave you researching things you never thought about.
      As for the incident of having a snake taken and subsequently released, I hope you are in an area where the snake could thrive in the wild. I really am sorry to hear that though.
      Where are you located, in general terms? I may be able to suggest someone local to you to get a snake from.

      Kentuckiana Exotics I live in Baton Rouge Louisiana. I caught the king in my yard. So he shouldn't have any problems in the wild. As far as the friend. Hes not aloud back to my house. Any info would be awesome. Any animal that comes into my house will be taken care of and loved. I would've never dreamed before I caught king Luey that I'd like a snake much less love a snake. My son has been upset ever since. I think it would be a great birthday present for him. Hes a straight a student and is wanting to be a zoologist. Anything that deals with animals. Thank you so much. I have subscribed to you and look forward in back tracking and watching all your videos.

      Well, the only one I have read about in that neck of the woods would be in Kenner I believe. Which is just north of New Orleans. I think the company name was crazy 8balls, and she is rather new in the hobby as far as I have seen on Facebook. I can't really vouch for them, but given its not even an hour and a half drive for you, you could see the animals before picking them up. I am sure there are others, but none that I know much about.
      If you are thinking about getting one shipped ahead of time, that is definitely possible, and your options would open up of course to more paint jobs. Given you said you don't have too much to spend, you kind of are limited to morphs, given most shipping will be between 50 and 75, on top of the cost of the snake. If you want a classic normal ball python, they can go from 20 to 40 from most breeders though, so you could still be getting out under 100.
      when is his birthday?

      Kentuckiana Exotics true, but he looks up unboxings like this to see if they pack like they should. So this would really help, especially if you live in an area where it gets real cold or hot. Which those vans get super hot.

People in this hobby tend to overlook many things chasing a dollar. half of my collection will never be bred, and the breeding I am doing is to get animals I want, and off set some of the price of food. So adding snakes to my collection that weren't what I ordered is okay by me as these babies are definitely doing well now. Most people really do care about their animals (or atleast I really do hope so). I have seen people do the same, and they mean no harm, I just think people take the animals for granted at times because we know they are a hearty animal. People forgo kindness, for efficiency at times to produce a video. And it's my theory, that if I show the animals as they are, people will be able to relate to it more, so taking my time - and doing what I hope every responsible owner does when they aren't on a mission to make a video - will hopefully help me reach a larger audience in the long run. And hopefully, that reach will help spread the love of an amazing species of animals. :D

      Thespian glad to hear your passion is growing! Just remember that I really did gamble when I got these two in and they were that cold. You really should quarantine when introducing new snakes to your collection. Especially across multiple species. An RI can spread, and get a ball python sick, and that same RI can kill a boa. So keep them in a separate area for about a month to ensure they aren't sick before putting them in the same room.

      Do you have a copy of the ad on Morph Market or anything that says what they weigh. I would file a claim with Paypal...

    • @KentuckianaExotics
      @KentuckianaExotics  6 років тому +2

      I didn't copy the ad, never had this kind of issue before to think like that. However I don't wish to file a claim on Paypal, given I might have to send the snakes back, as I think they have a better home now. As for the weights, I currently am putting them on a 5 day eating rotation with my juveniles. Once they have eaten 10 meals or so, I will put them on the weekly rotation.
      But looking at his page closer now, almost all of his snakes seem underweight. I don't know if he is lying about the ages, or if they are all emaciated like the ones I received.

    • @tims.8045
      @tims.8045 6 років тому +5

      I looked at his MorphMarket ad and I wouldn't buy from him if it saved my life. He has snakes that are 2012 weighing 800g. He breeds for money obviously and saves money by providing the absolute minimums. Piece of crap IMO... If it was one or 2 fussy feeders than that's one thing but almost every animal he has listed (all 127 of them) are underfed. There is 0 reason for a 2 year old ball to be under 1000 grams unless it was a rescue or 12g at birth.

    • @KentuckianaExotics
      @KentuckianaExotics  6 років тому +6

      Exactly right... I don't think he is listing their true ages, and is still underfeeding. I sincerely hope the rest of that collection is healthy. I wish I knew someone in the local area that could go check for me.

    Hey, I was just given a Ball Python as a surprise gift. It was unfortunately purchased from PetSmart. They supplied a sheet showing the days it would eat and when it would shed. The sheet also had "Date Arrived" which added up to 3 months, but no actual age of the snake. It also failed to give the sex of the snake, I was told that the employee at PetSmart said it was "too young to sex", which I've never heard of.
    So my question is:
    What should a 3 month old Ball Python weigh and how long should they be?

    • @KentuckianaExotics
      @KentuckianaExotics  6 років тому

      MachoDingus first off, I'm happy you got a baby. Weight ranges, it can vary based on how big they hatched. I have hatched babies as small as 28 grams, and as heavy as 94 grams. If they average 60 grams, at 3 months You should be looking at about 100 gram range plus or minus given eating habits and other factors.

    • @KentuckianaExotics
      @KentuckianaExotics  6 років тому

      MachoDingus as for lengths, I never measure that really. I worry that they eat, and they shed proper. Everything else can take it's time. As for sexing a snake, you can do that once they are out of the egg. You just have to be careful not to damage the sex organs. I only teach people to do that in person so I canensure a snakes safety.

    I really appreciate how you handle the snakes and how you gently closed the tub. Drives me nuts when people slide tubs open/closed in a rush and handle their snakes as if they’re inanimate objects. I’m not especially familiar with morphs but that second one sure isn’t a pastel! Hope these girls got up to a healthier size.

    • @KentuckianaExotics
      @KentuckianaExotics  6 років тому

      Thank you for the kind words. My animals are my family that I chose to have around me, and treating them as inanimate objects is now how I would wish to treat them.
      As for the genetics, neither of them was actually the right snakes that I ordered, however I am completely happy to have them in my care. The second one is a normal, potentially het pied. The first does have pastel and kalabash reduction gene, and potentially is heterozygous for pied as well, but until I decide to breed them, this is just a hope as that was what I was trying to order.
      I hope you are well, and that you enjoy the channel and any content already out or that is to come.

  • @ChrisHardwickanimaladventures

    Sorry to hear about your bad experience. From what I've experienced there are a lot of similar breeders, they slow feed snakes for sale to save on costs and for reduced maintenance, it's pretty typical. I've bought yearlings the size of hatchlings. But it doesn't seem to hurt the snakes and they do grow much faster than other similar sized younger snakes, in fact they will catch up and you'll never even know most times. I'd quarantine those away from your collection, big breeders buy and sell a lot of snakes and I'm sure most have a low level mite infestation that they battle, it's just part of the business. I'd quarantine in a separate room at least, maybe in the basement or a different level of the house or ideally a separate house LOL. Also, the number one cause of death shipping snakes is overheating from the heat pack. Snakes can survive the cold pretty good, I'm guessing he probably had some cooked snakes that died and dumped the heat packs. I wouldn't dog on the seller too much, especially buying large female hets, he probably put more money into those snakes than he sold them for.

    • @KentuckianaExotics
      @KentuckianaExotics  6 років тому +3

      I have had a mixed review on the unboxing, and I love that you took the time to post. They are off of paper towels finally, I haven't seen a single mite, and use prevent-o-mite, so was finally okay putting them on cocofiberous bedding. Heat/cold - Yeah, cooked snakes is always a worry. And I would rather go cooler than warmer on a trip, so long as it doesn't pose health risks like with all the snow we were having.
      The finances of it all - I am not nearly a huge breeder, so I can only go off my numbers that I have here, but you are right in thinking he probably put more into them than he sold them for. 4 years old, say a meal every 2 weeks on average (keeping nice numbers here) is about 100 rats in each snake. Average rat about $2.50 would be $250 in. Oddly, the visual genetics aren't what I ordered, so I have 0 idea about the "het" until I breed them out, but he definitely took losses. The first snake has more visual mutations than I bought, and the second was a normal. The next update on these snakes will go into that though. As I have said in other comments, I do not wish him ill in any manner. I hope he is just new to ball pythons and is learning, and his knowledge grows.

      Thank you Chris, nice to see some common sense in these emotion based comments. I live in AZ and often times when shipping to say WI for example by the time it was warm enough to ship there it was getting to be in the mid 90s here and while a heat pack would have maybe helped on that end I needed a cooling pack on my end. These people commenting are kids, they don't remember buying imported ball pythons that wouldn't eat for 6-12 months at a time if ever. I think this dude got a great deal on a pair of het females and he's still unhappy and talking about buying from BHB which anybody that was in this hobby 20 years ago knows better than to do.

    Do ball pythons like to be handled often? I'm considering getting one

    • @KentuckianaExotics
      @KentuckianaExotics  6 років тому +3

      A good majority of them are quite okay with being handled often. There are some that aren't, but they are fewer. If you get them young, and work with them, they really do make wonderful pets.
      Things to note about handling snakes: Do NOT handle them the day you are going to feed them. Don't handle them much the day after you feed them. Snakes feel most vulnerable when they have recently eaten due to the fact that they cant move like normal. So a bit of a "break" before and after feeding is usually suggested.
      If you are considering getting a ball python, get the setup up and running ahead of time. Make sure the temperatures and humidity are good ahead of time. Take your time and find one that you absolutely find gorgeous. Classic/Normals are how most people start keeping them, but if there is a morph you like, find the most beautiful version of it you can. Also, put money back for vet bills. Hopefully, you will never need it, but just in case funds are a great idea ahead of time. Forums are a great place to get ideas of anything wrong, however no one knows every thing that can go wrong, and being able to afford tests and medicines is always advised, even with cats and dogs and any other creatures you decide to take care of.
      That said, they are amazingly hardy animals that are worth keeping. I am glad you are considering getting one, and I wish you true joy while keeping them.

One had died, the other had a bad respiratory infection. Lucky I was able to save that one... Even with putting them in quarantine, they had riddled half of my other snakes with mites.... Was a pain in the ass trying to care for the one that was sick, along with killing off the mites, and still being able to make formation in the mornings.

    Just curious why unbox and run risk of MITES in the snake room Seems super risky

    • @KentuckianaExotics
      @KentuckianaExotics  3 роки тому

      So, this is a topic thats a bit debated behind the scenes with people who have studied reptiles for years...
      So in most facilities, and especially homes, there is no such thing as a quarantine. The risks are the same of opening in the living room versus opening in the snake room. The idea of quarantine in the place I was at, was all for show... mites are prolific creatures. They travel quite well, and can sustain themselves in a home for longer than I knew for a long while. So if the two rooms weren't hermetically sealed from one another, the risk is the same. A real quarantine is not performed by very many facilities unless they are scientific in nature like at a few universities. Even zoos don't usually follow quarantine when importing species from around the world.
      So if you don't have two facilities or a proper hermetically sealed room, the risk is the same. Now, knowing this, I take a couple other forms of precautions against bringing in parasites. I preteat all tubs, and terrariums. I treat carpets to minimize what might be able to thrive there, and more. But the truest answer i can give to your question for back then, was I didn't want to show the rest of the place I was living as much given I was kind of new to making videos, so shooting in that room, was preferred.
      Basically, it all played a part in the decision as to where to open the box.

This way, future buyers will be able to find the video and make an informed decision. If it is warm, heat packs aren't needed for instance. So they can take that into account. And the weights... again they get to make Informed decisions.

    You didn't quarantine them?

    • @KentuckianaExotics
      @KentuckianaExotics  6 років тому

      Normally I would, but my quarantine setup wasn't up to heat (I only plug it in when I get an animal in as I don't get new babies to quarantine very often), and given they were shipped in the cold without heat packs, I wanted to get them directly onto heat to start warming up.
      This is not a practice I really would ever advocate unless there are circumstances that dictate breaking out of the norm. That said, the tubs they went into didn't have any bedding, I do use provent-o-mite, so my main worry wasn't mites. It would be a fungal or bacterial RI spreading to my other babies. And I was very vigilant keeping an eye out for any signs from any of the snakes.
      Now I have changed my procedure when getting in new babies going forward, I am going to be turning on my quarantine heat the day before I get snakes in. It doesn't usually take more than an hour to be where I want it, but that advance will prevent me from having these same issues in the future if they ever arise again.
      I hope you are well :)

    I have a doubt that pythons are dangerous do they harm you😳 what happens if they try to bit or eat you

    • @KentuckianaExotics
      @KentuckianaExotics  6 років тому

      Okay, so I am going to attempt to say this right and tell you both sides of this. I got bit last night while feeding, it lasted less than half of a second, and the snake had already realized I wasn't the food source and let go. It shocks you, it barely stings, and much less than a bee in most cases. And the bite was 100% my fault. I feed rats that are not alive as I do not want them to suffer, and I hold the rats to move them and simulate life for the snakes. I run the risk of a bite, knowingly.
      Now as for after care, rinse with soap and warm water, or hand sanitizer, and move on to the next cage. I have almost never been bit, if I wasn't feeding, when it comes to ball pythons. (Other species I have, but again, my fault, just in other ways).
      As for trying to eat you... there are only a few species on the planet that could view humans as a prey item. Physically we are too big for most species of snake to even attempt to eat us. You will hear of myths of snakes measuring themselves out to see if they are long enough to eat us, this is wrong in so many ways. They need to be big enough around for them to be able to hold their prey in. Green anacondas can get big enough to take a human, but there's no evidence that they ever have. Reticulated pythons have killed humans, though this is rare, even with the thousands that are bred every year by keepers. And Burmese pythons have killed humans, and this is the most controversial one of the lot. (Because of overfeeding by humans, they grow larger that in the wild, to where they could)

    What do you mean by fast feed?

    • @KentuckianaExotics
      @KentuckianaExotics  6 років тому +3

      fast feeding means I feed every 5 days instead of 7. Also, when first getting a snake, usually you wait a week to feed to allow them time to adapt to their new environment. If you want to feed them faster, you take a good chance of them refusing the meal, which if you have other snakes, is easy to push down the line. but if not, you may risk wasting rats if you feed frozen thawed.
      I do not advocate feeding multiple rats in the same day unless it is in certain circumstance, which are few and far between, like say you get a egg to hatch and the baby comes out 25 grams. That's a serious health risk. if they refuse food, they might not make it a few weeks. So you assist feed pinky mice right? or force feed if absolutely necessary. You can (though not always recommended) feed them two of the pinky mice in one sitting, so they get double the food to grow. This is called chain feeding or power feeding. If you do it too much though, you can cause your snake to get a fatty liver and other issues that will impact their health. Obesity is a real issue in snakes that people dont realize. So, fast feeding can mean a few things. In this case though, it was meaning to push food on a slightly accelerated time table, for a short period of time (8 meals), to help them get up to a healthier weight range from being under fed. After that, they were put back on a normal time table, so they don't incur any undue effects. I hope this helps. If I made it more confusing, feel free to ask all the questions you want. I am here to help people learn.

    • @KentuckianaExotics
      @KentuckianaExotics  6 років тому

      》Tessa 《 so I grew up handling them from the wild as they are native to where I lived as a kid. They are amazing, they are very well adaptive to their environments. They are a bit more nippy, but if you were small and anything could be a predator, you would be too. The bites don't hurt, so it's kind of up to your level of comfort.
      Balls are always an easy first snake though. So if you aren't sure, they could be a better introduction to snakes. Both are beautiful though, and either could make amazing pets.

      Thanks brother. The second is a normal, and honestly, I am still glad to have her in my collection. They are still beautiful animals, and I wouldn't let them go for anything.
      Looking back with logic, and how they have grown since, I am rather sure the second one was shipped after having laid a clutch of eggs. It would explain the tail suck and the ridge of her spine easily, and given neither of the snakes are what I ordered, I don't think the age is right for the first girl either, so the slow feeding may not have been as bad as I first thought. So hopefully they weren't neglected too bad.
      Thank you for the well wishes, I don't know if you have a channel on here, or a facebook, but given your name and comment, I am going to assume you breed. I am getting married tomorrow, so I dont have a lot of time on here tonight to check you out, but leave me another message so I can check you out when I have more time :)

      The Genetic Hunters hey bros. Yeah but at the same time I learned a lot to take into the future. I got two snakes that I now love. And quite frankly, it will help others out going forward.

    800 grams at 4 years? yikes. anyway i don't need to point out to you that a breeder selling a snake and not holding it back is actually incentivized to keep it smaller-- less expensive food, takes up less space, etc.
    bought one on morph market recently which was only 140 grams at 10 months old. put some weight on her and doing well now
