The Lost World: Jurassic Park has a T.rex loose in San Diego at the end but an insanely cool theory was that the Raptors are what caused him to escape via a deleted scene where they attack the crew in a gruesome way. This probably never was the case but it would make for a great scene in a new story and Fallen Kingdom even entertained the idea in an early draft of the script with Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm on the what to Site B.

The theory persists because they did a HORRIBLE job of relaying that information to the audience. There really needed to be a scene of the rex getting loose or even a just quick shot of them checking CCTV or finding one dying man that can point to the rex right before it busts out of the hold.

I remember hearing and reading about the Raptor theory online (back when dial-up was still a thing) shortly after The Lost World came out. And, honestly, I think it makes a lot of sense, especially when you consider the required angle for one of the deaths in relation to the large size of the T-rex on board. Of course, the more likely explanation based on how the ship return sequence was shot could be that Spielberg does not show every angle for the kill inside the ship. But, I do think the Raptor theory makes more sense within the logic of that world based on what is shown, and is a lot cooler.

    • @thickerconstrictor9037

This all could have been a moot point if Spielberg had just shown some damage to the wheelhouse. There is absolutely zero evidence whatsoever to show that raptors were loose on the ship. None. Except it makes sense in people's heads but the fact is if there is nothing in the movie at all that is relayed to the people watching the movie to tell them that's what happened then it's not what happened. Because there's no point in keeping what actually happened a secret from the audience in a movie. So the answer is a plot hole and it was caused by sloppy filmmaking because they added the T-Rex in San Diego stuff last minute. And could have so easily been fixed

I always found that confusing. 100% of the crew is dead and there's a severed hand in a small space. If you just went below deck you'd be safe from a giant dinosaur. If more than just the Rex was captured (like Fallen Kingdom), chaos occurred on the voyage and then during the dock crash the Rex, Raptors and who knows what else was unleashed on San Diego that would have been insane.

    • @redwa11er

    • @MarqFJA87
      @MarqFJA87 11 місяців тому +7

Yeah, this is my only major criticism of the T. rex being intended to have been the sole cause of the whole crew being killed. A lot of them would have been deep in the ship attending to various tasks, like running/overseeing the engine room.
That being said, according to the storyboards for this ultimately unfilmed sequence, the captain's cabin in which the severed hand is found would've had a whole side of it destroyed by the T. rex smashing its head into it... and conveniently, it's the side that we're *never* shown in the movie, whether from the outside or the inside.
Personally, I would've had a raptor or two hitch a ride to kill off the remaining crew inside, only to eventually die themselves, whether by a mortally wounded crew member managing to blast one in the face with superheated steam from one of the pipes lining the walls or some other environmental hazard on the ship, or a crew member armed with a shotgun or even a knife achieving a mutual kill.

It would've given Nedry further reason for becoming an agent for Biosyn. Hammond getting cheap on him despite Nedry having a family to support would cause him to secretly work for Biosyn, since as Dodgson states, Nedry was due to be paid $1.5 million for the embryos.

Now that you've said it, yeah, there's enough bread crumbs to tell us that the Rex was responsible for the crew getting killed, however . . . It really should've been raptors. The baby rex wasn't anywhere near the captain's cabin, and something big like a T-Rex isn't going to waste calories hunting small prey like us. Especially if it's risking injury breaking into a structure like the captain's deck. It woke up dehydrated, surrounded by water. I'm not sure it wouldn't have run to the edge and ducked down to let the water cool it off (I'm assuming it could smell the salt in the water and know not to drink it.) A raptor pack in the tight confines of a ship would make short work of the crew, and actually get enough calories from the hunt to be worth doing.

Remember that it was searching for its baby. The movie shows us that Rexes have strong paternal instincts. Anyone not its baby was a target. That's always how I viewed it, anyways. It was more pissed off than actually hunting humans. Though, that being said it does still follow the 'monster/shark' trope of hunting humans, regardless of how much sense that would actually make.

There is absolutely nothing else that shows it could be raptors except for the fact that the T-Rex couldn't fit in the wheelhouse. There's literally nothing. And if it's a secret from the audience then it's nothing more than a pipe dream. Because there's no point in making the answer unknowable by the audience. The fact is it all could have been fixed simply by showing damage to the wheelhouse.. but the real true answer people just are uncomfortable with but people's discomfort doesn't make their other hypotheses true. The fact is this team and the San Diego stuff was added and the very last minute and it was sloppy and it's a plot hole. There were no raptors. It was always the T-Rex it was just done sloppy

About the concept art of the Raptor scene, you really have to look at the environment with it looking like it's flooding from the pipes in the hallway, along with those valves that are often seen in ships, it makes me really think that was supposed to be one of the lower decks of the ship that were flooding. That is unless you want to say that's supposed to be the basement or whatever for the worker village centre, but the water would've already flooded that whole room even before anyone got there since that place was abandoned for a long time.

I personally hope that they’ll slightly retcon the deaths on S.S Venture back at 1997 as having been caused by the raptors? Why?
It could open up a nice sequel in the current World timeline where the OG raptors can at last see some action again in the form of a plot where a long established breeding population of Sorna raptors is discovered deep within South America years after the classic trilogy incidents. Turns out that these not only are the culprits responsible for the Buck getting loose on the boat but have also evaded discovery on the mainland for so long due to a very special ability. Again borrowing from the Crichton novels(like the film-makers should have long ago), due to a high amount of chromatophores in their skin these raptors were actually capable of blending into their surroundings long before the Indominus Rex was even a glint in Henry Wu’s eyes, a genetic accident leading to the deadliest species of stealth hunter in the world now responsible for modern day myths of hupia making people disappear in Costa Rica. Cue present day dinosaur experts being called in to investigate, finding out that InGen’s lysine contingency plan did did absolutely squat and figure out a way to safely coexist with the living remnants of John Hammond’s original park project now occupying new territory while trying to survive attacks from this blast from the past.

It can't be raptors if we don't know it's raptors based on something we see in the movie or even concept. The fact is it was the T-Rex and it's a plothole. And no matter how much somebody wants it to be something else, it's not. The T-Rex couldn't have been its head in there which is why it was a mistake that was due to all that material being rushed because it was a last-minute addition by Spielberg it could have easily been fixed simply by showing damage to the wheelhouse but there was never supposed to be raptors on board nothing in the movie at all therefore there were not it's just a mistake.

But at the same time I can see how it could've been Raptors or even Pteranodons when you put them into context, especially the concept art which clearly shows a Raptor in a flooded deck of the ship that definitely doesn't look like the flooded basement of the worker village Centre, not to mention the other concept art out there showing the raptors watching the t-rex being loaded onto the ship from afar. With the hand being possible for the T-rex if it could get a grip and just bit or tore him out of the wheelhouse, if not paying homage to the arm scene in the first movie with the Raptors idea, along with the part of the Raptors escaping off the island by getting onto the cargo ships in the first book. Along with context we have of fishermen being known to go missing from being too close to the isle, which can really only mean Pteranodons unless they docked onto the shore, and we do see Pteranodons at the end of the movie. Overall the scene is meant to be mysterious BECAUSE it was rushed seemingly so there's a few ways you can look at it when you consider the context here, so really the only way to view it is with context and put it into perspective to interpret these things if we aren't given a clear answer because we seemingly won't get a concrete one, because the T-rex one even then simply isn't good enough to write off as the answer once you have that context. Writing it off as a plothole will get you nowhere when you haven't even looked at or considered the context at play.

a bit more seriously, my own preferred take on what was responsible for an alternate continuity of the films is that it could've been troodons in the vein of _Jurassic Park: The Game,_ inspired by some being inserted into the side-area of the scene in the _Lego Jurassic World_ game, which i'm convinced is a reference to the theory that raptors were responsible

8:11 how about a "Jurassic Cruise" movie? Takes place in the 90s, a cruise ship heads down to Costa Rica, passes Nublar and raptors get on the ship, the same way some had been escaping. From there on it's pure chaos and everyone trying to survive best the can. And for an added bonus, maybe after the raptors had been defeated, I'd have a Plesiosaurus attack the boat towards the end of the movie, maybe 2, causing the ship to crash or sink, leaving very few survivors, and whoever is left to swim to the nearest island or island the ship crashed into/neat which would turn out to be Isla Sorna.

The severed hand in the wheelhouse still damns the idea of the Rex killing everyone because they didn't show a giant hole for the Rex to have shoved his head inside, and no degree of saying "continuity issue/mistake" will make people overlook it. Without that giant Rex head-sized hole, our options either become raptors loose on the ship or this Rex can alter its size like Ant-Man and casually walk into the wheelhouse through the door. Whether or not the hole was present in old storyboards doesn't matter since it didn't make it into the actual film and in that context...raptors are pretty much the only thing that make sense.

Having a scene of Raptors loose on a ship would be really great to see on screen. Very much in the vein of Michael Crichton's novel, and I want to see it expanded upon. As for the theory, I wasn't on board with it despite the concept art and the novel subplot being the only evidence for The Lost World film. One of Klayton's old videos show another concept art showing a hole on the room where the severed hand was, and the camera wasn't shown on screen. So, I think it was like a continuity goof up.
7:39, could you elaborate more about that opinion? How would suspense be better in live-action than animation? I feel like you could pull off a very suspenseful scene with the right art style to visually show the drastic situation the boat survivors they're in.

Until I recently read the first novel (for the first time), I never thought of questioning that the t-rex took out the ship's crew in Lost World, but now I can see why the raptor theory exists. Also as a sidenote, discovered your channel from a recommended video for me, I'm really enjoying your videos and this past week I actually signed up for curiosity stream using your code 😂

man, all they needed to add to the end of Lost World was when whats-his-face went down for the infant rex, we stumbles upon a bunch of severed body parts, indicating that after the outbreak on the boat, the surviving crewman tried to hide in the cargo hold, only for the rex to follow them down into it as they were re-closing the hatch.

How the Jurassic World franchise would most likely handle a Raptors on the ship scene -
As the S.S. Venture sails towards the mainland, one of the ships crew hears a sound that causes the hairs on the back of his neck to stand up. He turns around to see a Velociraptor is staring at him. His eyes quickly scan the ship where they spot a second Raptor approaching his location. The Raptors have boarded the ship and now their hunting us he thinks to himself. As the two Raptors approach the worker he slowly raises his hand towards them, signalling them to stop. The Raptors look at the man with his hand raised at them, and roll their eyes, thinking to themselves, why does everyone keep doing that to us lately? Do they actually think that would work?
After the ship crashed into the San Diego dock and the Rex had escaped, Ingen workers from the Press conference board what's left of the Venture and are horrified by what they find. The bodies of the crew, each with a hand missing, are everywhere on the ship. The Rex couldn't have done all this on its own, one Ingen security worker thinks to himself. Just then, he hears the rev of an engine, and quickly turns around to see several Velociraptors on motorcycles jumping off the ships deck As the final Raptor makes her jump, she shouts back at the security worker, "So long suckers."

That the Tyrannosaurus Rex could kill everyone on the boat is ridiculous. EVERYBODY was in the hold?? How did he kill the guy in the wheel-house? And if he was on deck, how did he get back in the hold? Highly unlikely scenario on top of another highly unlikely scenario on top of yet another highly unlikely scenario would have to be the case for this to happen.

Honestly, considering the fact that there's still a SEVERED HAND, literally CLINGING to the cargo-ship's wheel, and no other sign of the remaining crew members... A T-rex makes sense. Amputated hands will still cling or clutch something when connection to the brain is lost, especially from a gruesome death.

The one and only issue that I have with this scene that makes it sloppy is the lack of the hole in the wheelhouse. That's literally it. It's not at all hard to see how the T-Rex could have done everything else. The T-Rex is essentially overdosing on the animal version of fentanyl. So they give it what is essentially narcan to stop the overdose. This turns the animal into a raging locomotive like they like to say. It breaks free of it supports and starts attacking the crew on board. If they had just put a hole in the wheelhouse to show how the captain got attacked, everything else falls into place. The T-Rex attacks the crew and mortally wound one guy but doesn't kill him right away. The T-Rex chases the one or two living people down into the cargo hold and the crew member that is mortally wounded crawls over to the button and closes the T-Rex in the cargo hold before dying. Now everyone is dead and the T-Rex is stuck below. Nothing remotely remarkable about that. And the hole in the wheelhouse shows how the T-Rex was able to leave the severed hand on the wheel. That would have literally fixed the whole scenario. At the end of the day the entire San Diego stuff feels really out of place in an otherwise wonderful sequel. I think this sequel was just about as perfect as it could have been until the San Diego stuff happened. It was rushed and probably needed about 15 more minutes. Now don't get me wrong I still love the San Diego stuff because I love T-Rex and I think that overall it's still the best sequel hands down but they definitely were sloppy with that last 15 minutes or so. And it could have all been at least passable if they just put a hole and some damage to the wheelhouse. But I don't think there's any good evidence whatsoever that raptors got loose. People always try to come up with a hypothesis to explain stuff but nothing gets revealed to the audience about that hypothesis happening so it makes absolutely no sense. There's no point in having there be an answer to something that in no way is
relayed to the audience whatsoever. If it was supposed to be raptors they wouldn't make it a secret from the audience. Because what people are doing now is just looking at it as if it's real life and saying if this is real life this is how it happened, but it's not real life. it's a movie. there's no reason to hide the answer from the audience. the answer is that it is the T-Rex. it always was the T-Rex. it always will be the T-Rex, and it doesn't matter if raptors make sense to you or not. that's not the answer. It was never raptors nor was it ever supposed to be. it will never be raptors whether the wheelhouse plot hole makes sense or not. The fact is it's a plothole. And as much as it may suck to hear, sometimes plot holes exist and there is no logical answer and that's the case here. but the answer is not raptors just because you are uncomfortable with the fact that there's a plot hole

I always figured the baby Rex killed the captain. The captain probably investigated the main incident of the T-Rex becoming loose on the boat, somehow gets injured, and ends up being eaten by the baby Rex while he is at the wheel. Made sense to me when I was a kid at least lol.

what if there was a survivor on that ship and a movie starts with a flash back to the Trex breaking out, attacking everyone, partly off screen as our protagonist hides and eventually he takes an escape boat before the Trex is captured in the cargo hold, but it could show the Trex rip a hole in the wall pulling out the captain at some point. The reason I think this theory holds up is when rewatching the movie, the wall directly behind the captain is never shown, not from the inside and not from the outside. No idea what the rest of the movie would be about, maybe the guy has PTSD and is forced to encounter dinos again years later

Honestly, back in the day nobody in my circle EVER mentionned that raptor hypothesis. Must of us suspected either Pterosaurs (since the movie concludes on a Geosternbergia/Pteranodon) or even marine reptiles because they were already present in lore and merchandising even if we never saw them. That piece of concept art was nowhere to be found in my place and the internet was still only burgeoning back in 1997. As for the T.rex breaking out that was the official answer and critics back in the day overtly critised that ellipse in the final product as a plothole.

They should've let the T-Rex smash out of the ship WHILE it was docking. No absent raptors, no long dead dead crew, no mystery, no decades long fan theories. Just a ship crew not administrating the sedative properly and not realizing that the T-Rex is fully awake while they were distracted by Malcolm and friends' protests during docking.
It'll be a bit of a homage to the Raptor cage scene at the start of Jurassic Park and in line with Malcolm and friends' unintended manslaughter of other people with good intentions throughout Lost World.

One issue about the raptor theory is, if that was the case, you'd think it'd be referenced in other movies like JP3, or at least in the side material for the Jurassic World trilogy since they discussed the pteronadons from the third movie and even established that the Spinosarus was one of the first hybrids, so there'd be something that would've referenced raptors on the Venture if that was the case and not the T-Rex doing the killing

    • @mattmetawolf8634
      @mattmetawolf8634 11 місяців тому

That’s your little issue that sounds like a nothing burger of an issue with the theory if I’m being honest because if you take that dream sequence that Alan dreamt where are almost everybody was gone and raptor Billy was literally calling his name waking him up I would consider that to be a nice reference and given that Alan Grant has always referred to these raptors a smart smart enough to where they know how to open doors why wouldn’t they know how to infiltrate a boat and hop off once everybody is dead plus it make it easier in that regard if let’s say the tea Rex got irritable and was able to break its restraints.

Klayton! Greetings from Argentina. I swear I think I've seen all the videos you've uploaded. This is my favorite UA-cam channel, because, well, I love Jurassic Park just like you. I want to comment on something that got me thinking in the video. Hopefully, they'll give us fans some love with a movie based on some part of the books, or for example, raptors escaping to one of the islands that aren't Nublar or Sorna, because we have Isla Matanceros, Isla Muerta, Isla Pena.We all think of thousands of ideas to make a good, bloody movie just like we fans want. They could also do something about the creation of forbidden species on Isla Sorna before the Hurricane Clarissa ruined the labs etc. I swear I want a good movie in a few years , not a 15-minute short. I'm tired, I want some real JP content. I'm saying this after Dominion, which, for me, was an insult to Jurassic Park fans. Well, looking forward to your next video, Klayton. You're awesome!

I had the that idea too, of it being the Raptors. I used to tell myself that maybe 2 raptors made it on board and created this whole horror story in my head of them picking off the crew one by one and some crew member thinking he can hide down below with the Rex cause it’s tranquillised and that the raptors wouldn’t go near it 😂 (and how wrong he was)
