1966.....#9 U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #7 UK Singles Chart
Original video edited and remastered with HQ stereo sound.
The most commercially successful version of "Guantanamera" in the English-speaking world was recorded by the easy listening vocal group, The Sandpipers, in 1966. Their recording was based on the Weavers' 1963 Carnegie Hall reunion concert rendition and was arranged by Mort Garson and produced by Tommy LiPuma. In addition to the group's vocals, the version includes Robie Lester on background vocals and narration by producer LiPuma. It reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart.

I believe her name was Robie Lester-en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robie_Lester
I was 8 y/o in '66. My Dad was the Flight Surgeon on the USS Kittyhawk (CVA 63): he served 2 yrs on the Hawk in the West-Pac. While on board ship, he taped the greatest hits of the late 50's and 60's: he brought back no less than 16 real to real tapes: The Sandpipers was among them: truly among the best of the best! I love and miss you Dad: thank you for your Service and your powerful influence in my life! RnMT
Would hear this song on the radio growing up. Brings back memories for me. Loved the song n have heard many singers sing it but the Sandpipers were the best! ❤❤
Remember this song as a kid in Jamaica. Classic!
The woman singing in the background does it for me - powerful and full of emotion. This was a massive hit around the world.
It would of been wonderful if she were filmed singing her part .
Definitive: this recording would not be the same without that wonderful female voice in the chorus.
The woman singer in the "background" is called a Backup Singer. She is not a member of the Sandpipers ( trio). Therefore she isn't right out front with the guys. Back in the 50s-60s backup singers were usually not seen.
Wonderful...1966 was just full of wonderful songs. Thanks so much for this one!
Greatest year in the history of popular music
A timeless classic! Thanks Sammy! 👏
Thanks Chris!
Well, it's not really a classic but a cover of a more or less traditional Cuban song. This version is just OK but doesn't talk me much. I don't like the feminine backing vocals.
I prefer Compay Segundo who is more authentic in this repertoire.

Seems so long ago but still enjoy this great one.
I always wondered why the recording contained the women's part that was integral to it but never showed them on the performance or the album. I guess it's kind of like the Wrecking Crew. They needed it on the record but didn't explain.
Definitive: this recording would not be the same without that wonderful female voice in the chorus.
@@Imaginacion57 Absolutely.
The women were not part of the group.
@@emerybayblues I saw the group in the fall of 1966 on TV, believe it was the Milton Berle show, and saw three guys and no women.
IKR... I like ta think - and hope - that they were All Cubanas... A lotta Gorgeous Women can be seen in Cuba, ICYDNK...
; )
Tive o privilégio em vida de ouvir essa canção. Uma maravilha inexplicável...
Obrigado!

Wonderful evergreen…🤓
The only thing I remember from 1966 was the song. All the rest a blur.
We called this song...... "One Ton Tomato" : )
Where did the female voices come from?
😄🎼One watermelon, i eat a one watermelon, one watermelon, i eat a one watermellllllllon.....one watermelon, i eat a one watermelon.....one watermelon......
🍅🎶One ton tomato, I need a one ton tomato, one ton tomato, I need a one ton tomato.🎶🍅
