What is "Color Indexing" and why it is awesome!

- This is a video that was recorded at the very start of the recent events so thats why there is no mention of whats going on. This video is very straightforward. Here I define and illustrate one of my favorite things: Color indexing. Simply put it means that colors of different mediums with the same name within a brand will match perfectly when used. This is a great tool for mixed media.
Brands that do this the best are Faber Castell where they color index across all lines the same is true of Crayola. Caran d'Ache does have color indexing for their pablo/supracolor/neocolor1/2 lines but those dont match with their lines of Luminance and museum aquarelle. To make matters more confusing SOME colors will match in the Luminance and museum aquarelle.

I really do like that about Faber Castell. I noticed the color indexing first with their Pitt pens and the Polychromos. I used that combo quite often in my Johanna Basford books. Then I got a full set of Albrecht Durer’s for Christmas and a new world opened up, for backgrounds. I noticed even a few of my gelatos matched. Because of this video, I am reminded that I still haven't fully explored the possibilities, and I have work to do. Welcome back!

Thanks for the video, glad you're all ok, it's strange that Derwent doesn't colour index. I've found some colours are the same across the Artists, Lightfast and Drawing range but not many. It does make it so much easier when companies do this. Looking forward to your next video
I really don’t know. Even like the derwent inktense pans don’t really match with the pencils. It’s weird. It’s a deliberate choice but one I don’t fully understand.

Yep! The neocolor1/2 and supracolor and pablos are indexed. It’s weird that they didn’t index luminance and museum aquarelle

Please do! Faber Castell and surprise crayola do likely the best job and on color indexing! I don’t know why but they do. And Faber Castell does it across EVERYTHING the watercolor markers, the pastel pencils and hard pastels. Even the children’s line. It’s really impressive. Every now and then they will have a handful of colors that are exclusive to the Pitt pens or the Pitt pastels. But for the most part if you like a color you can get it in all their lines.
