    hello, I installed a similar system, but instead of connecting by a plumbing system with the costs involved, I use a syphon system from one barrel to the next barrel. It does work, I found it out on UA-cam, not having any holes ensures no leaks and it is very easy to increase capacity with an extra barrel and you can very easily remove a barrel for cleaning. Try it with 2 pop bottle and some plastic pipe, move the bottles up and down and see what happens.

      That is the way we do it.
      A length of hose. Fill it with water and stick each end into a couple of barrels, where there is enough water to cover the inlet in each tube.
      The only engineering I have done is some 3D printed bits to hold the hose on the barrel to prevent it from folding in on itself.

      I keep debating which method to use and it seems like over the top is better since there is zero chances of leaks except at the one spiggot.

    Very cool! My husband and I are from nw Colorado (East Slope). We both grew up in the mountains here and have finally found our little dream farm nestled up against the foothills. So excited to get all my garden areas going, heirloom seeds planted and everything set up like we've planned.
    We are extremely fortunate to own the native water units that are on the property... I still have always wanted to set up a rainwater collection system so I'm going to do that too.
    I really like what you've done with this particular system very much, so it's the one I've chosen to put together for us.
    Hey, thank you for sharing this and all your other videos.. 👍 I subscribed and will be making my way through all of them. It's all useful and so important, especially in these times of major food supply chain interruptions, which people should know about (please research it) the food shortages and water wars were planned decades ago and are being methodically orchestrated as I write this ...
    Worsening water wars are here now- folks/farmers straight up being denied water by the 👺 corrupt state and federal Water Boards turning their supply off.
    Making sure you have water that no one can just switch off as well as being able to grow enough of your own *non* GMO leaden food- to provide for your family in the years to come will save lives...
    💠 Good luck to you and yours... Stay safe!

    Good project 👍 Not to be critical but if it was me, I'd leave just a lil more room between the barrels. They could swell out enough when they are full to put undue stress on the PVC and possibly pull apart. Other than that good job! I plan on building one virtually identical as yours. Thanks.

    I guess the water would be 'self leveling' between the barrels... if water flowed only into the first barrel... it would flow out the bottom and to the other 4 barrels equally and fill them from the bottom up? Would there be any type of overflow device in case of a hard rain and all 5 barrels filled up? Thanks so much for sharing. This video is the cleanest/ easiest to watch for a rain barrel system.

    • @LancoAmish
      @LancoAmish  6 місяців тому

      Right about self leveling. As far as overfilling i just let the water overflow at the fill point until I can switch the diverter back to the downspout. I believe there are automatic diverters but all my systems are on barns, sheds, etc. if I had them on my house I’d definitely get something automatic.

    I would assume that during the winter months, you just open everything up. In order to prevent pipes / fitting from freezing, and breaking.

  • @thelostarchivesserialvault5353
    @thelostarchivesserialvault5353 3 роки тому +4

    If you can include a clear section of pipe so you can make sure that the water is flowing like it should. I have multiple IBC totes linked and I have some clear PVC sections and it is sure nice to be able to watch the water pour around in a big storm. Don't forget to paint your barrels black to prevent algae build-up.

    • @OldeManGrim
      @OldeManGrim 2 роки тому

      How does painting them black prevent algae? Getting some white barrels delivered to build a system like this, so now you have me wondering if I need to paint them or something.

    • @thelostarchivesserialvault5353
      @thelostarchivesserialvault5353 2 роки тому +3

      @@OldeManGrim Most IBC totes (always use FOOD GRADE totes to store water) are translucent. Water that sits around, especially rainwater, will develop algae in the presence of sunlight. Painting them black or wrapping them in black plastic prevents the presence of sunlight. If your barrels are translucent white then yes you would want to paint them. You can paint them whatever color you want if you want to blend them into your house for instance. Make sure to set the barrels on a raised platform so you can use gravity to flow the water out for use. A barrel typically holds about 55 gallons wheras a tote hold 350 or so. totes can be bought on craigstlist for less than $100 each. Make sure to have a ballcock valve installed inline so you can drain the barrels if needed. I have 10 tanks (2 rows of 5 each) interlinked so that as one fills it overflows into the next one. You would be surprised how fast the rain will fill them up. I water my yard with it.

      Thanks for watching. I’m in PA. I have to drain the tanks before the worst of cold weather sets in. However, I have a single barrel with a heavy brass spigot for my chickens that I never drain. It’s frozen solid before and hasn’t split. I’m able to use it most days in the winter as the sun does warm it enough to thaw out some.

    Good video..👨‍🌾But I do have a question 🤔. Why didn't you connect overflows from the top to each barrel? Basically so each barrel would be filling the next one and so on.
    Admittedly you'd have to build your stand a little different. But it seems far more efficient to have gravity doing the work for you.
    Any help you have a great day. 👍

      Thanks for watching. Connecting at the bottom allows all tanks to fill simultaneously and evenly. Here’s a link.

    Thank you for sharing this video. We are working on our first Rain Barrel project (4 barrels). Is this permanent structure, once all the plumbing is glued? Do you have any issues with sludge or build up bottom of barrel? If you do or not, how would you recommend to clean out the bottom barrels with this setup? Thanks!

    • @LancoAmish
      @LancoAmish  Рік тому +1

      Sludge will always be a problem after years of use. I drain mine every fall and this flushes them out ok. It wouldn’t be difficult to put bottom drain outs on the barrels not you would still have some settled stuff that would be hard to get out. Metal roofs have far less stuff that comes off compared to asphalt shingles also. The more stuff you can keep out the better.

    Hope it don’t get to cold there. My pvc pipe cracks when it freezes, even here in Florida. I will install a ball valve at each barrel so I can drain the pvc in cold weather. I know, extra expense but what else?

    If you are filling using a down spout how do you vent from barrel to barrel a 3" down spout can carry more than 30 times the water of a 3/4" pipe. the only way this setup will work properly you would have to plum the gutter to the top of every barrel.

    • @LancoAmish
      @LancoAmish  3 роки тому

      Thanks for watching. Each barrel can be vented at the top by loosening the filler caps. You are assuming that a 3 inch downspout is filled with water during a rain storm. Very unlikely. However, There is going to be a lot of water that continues down the downspout to the ground. A diverter can be infinitely adjusted to split the flow between barrels and ground. There is also a diverter sold that you can attach a regular hose to so you are only getting that amount of flow to the barrels. Search downspout diverters and you will find both varieties.

    Great video. Thanks for sharing. I've watched several on connecting rain barrels and yours looks the most professional and solid, and you explain it well. Have you had any issues with algae growing in the barrels? I just got some blue barrels like those and I when I peek inside, I can see more light penetrating than I expected. From what I've researched, the barrel needs to be fairly opaque to prevent algae. Thanks again.

      Thanks for watching. I get some algae but nothing severe. It doesn’t bother me too much because I’m just watering the berries. In my totes I get some also but I treat that with a bit of Clorox now and then. I use one of them for animals so I treat it.

      paint the barrels black. I have 7 connected 55 gallon barrels out by my garden. I hook up 180 feet of pvc pipe and fill them with my sump pump water. I have a spring in my backyard and they get filled in about 3 hours. The first year I didn't paint them and had algae galore, and my sister told my to paint them black, which I did and have not had a problem with algae since; just beautiful clear water.
