    Thanks for the video. Braid is fine in the surf. Mono does that the same thing as braid in the surf. Part of the issue you experienced is due the 1/4 oz weight. Also smaller hooks are better. Backpack is the way to go.

    • @FisherNewb
      @FisherNewb  4 роки тому

      Thanks! I was curious how to avoid the very quick movement. Will increase the size of the weight for sure. I got a fanny pack coming in but after Sunday, I am worried it will get too wet. Hope to see you out there some day.

    New to this episode and to surf fishing too but I would agree based on my limited experiences with braided line. I use 40lb braid to 10lb flouro and the braid seems to be more dense. The waves definitely push it around. To avoid that, I increased the weight and casted past the break to let it sink. Once it does it’s game on anyway as that’s what the perch are looking for in the surf which is the gulp bait rolling around. I like to call it “Perch Crack”. Great video and keep up the great work !

    As usual, a very good vid that’s always fun to watch (for fishing addicts like me).
    SoCal Surffishing is the local group. Randy Toji is a great guy and one of best local surf anglers in SoCal.
    The slang term for Gulp sand worms is crack. BSPs love crack...

    I also started surf fishing this Spring. I don't have waders (we'll see if that changes this Winter), but I did buy some neoprene diving booties. I really like them. They come-up higher on your ankles and have zippers to make them easier to get on and off. The best thing is that they stay securely on your feet and they do a pretty good job keeping sand out of the toes, so walking is MUCH easier than when I was just using beach shoes. They were ~$35 on Amazon.

    • @FisherNewb
      @FisherNewb  4 роки тому

      I ended up just using crocs for the surf. I don't use waders until the water is like 58 or so. Having fun but I really need to get better about identifying structure and what areas are holding fish

I am lucky in that I live within walking distance of the beach, so that means I can try to get very familiar with my section of beach, but it also means that I don't travel to other areas very often because it is just too convenient to go to the one I can walk to.

    If you keep your line tight when fighting fish, you can pinch the barbs off your hooks w/ pliers (barb-less). You actually hook the fish easier but you can lose the fish easier as well :). Good for releasing fish and yourself if you get a hook stuck in you. All my LC FM 110 are barb-less.

    By any chance what’s the rules/law for surf fishing? I live in SoCal also and I’m not far from Huntington and Newport. Where am I allowed to surf fish and what not? Does that require the fishing license?

    • @FisherNewb
      @FisherNewb  3 роки тому

      I'm no expert but I believe you need a license from all places other than piers and on special weekends. Based on where you are, there are size and quantity restrictions for the fish you catch. I would certainly look them up. I don't keep anything and always carry a license so I never pay attention. Glad you liked the video. I have several more from the surf, hope you enjoy them!
