      100%. Emilie Floge's fashion (at least, her passion project fashion) was designed to be worn without corseting or any too-restrictive underwear.

      @@edgaranalhoe7678 yeah if you don't count his views on women in general or his habit of picking up underage impoverished and impressionable girls to keep in his studio as "muses"- yes that means for artistic and sexual purposes. Don't get me wrong I dig his art but even there the way he portrays women is sole as dosile lovers and seductersses or pictures innocence. They don't have any character besides that. And that's not my interpretation, that's more or less his words.

    • @lenerdhuhn
      @lenerdhuhn 5 років тому +64

      @@edgaranalhoe7678 I'm just not that sure of we can call a 40+ man preying on 15/16 yo girls that live in extreme dire circumstances (Vienna in the early 20th century-not fun if your poor) "consentual" where they consented or not. Their choice was most likey to die of tuberculosis on the street.

    •  5 років тому +259

      @@lenerdhuhn to be honest that's no different to what every artist did at the time. getting a prostitute to pose for you was for usually the only way to be able to get a nude model, as posing nude obviously wasn't considered appropriate for a respectable lady. were a lot of these prostitutes poor and underage? yes, but that's thanks to the Austrian law - 14 was the age of consent at the time. so I don't think he was necessarily "preying" on anyone, at least no more than any other artist or art school at the time. according to our modern standards, that's obviously wrong - according to their morals and laws, perfectly fine. his views of women? also no different to any guy in the 1900s, most likely including our great-grandpas unfortunately. but then I admit I never read a detailed biography on Klimt, so I might be wrong

    You are absolutely right pointing out the differences to reform dresses. Those follow the ideals of simplicity, freedom and have often some spiritual or political origin. Flöge`s dresses are rather secession style/art nouveau artist's gowns. The older ones you showed seem to be of a much better sartorial quality than the featured one. Klimt and Emilie had this "artist and his muse" thing going on, and you should look into Gustav's atelier dress style, too! Always a pleasure watching you.

    I had a prom dress in the 1970s with the same type of organza pleated stuff in a bodice ruffle, but it was blue. Reminds me of barnacles which have little fans they use to sweep food out of the sea water. I'd search for vintage wear to cut apart for that stuff, like 1970s bridesmaid gowns which have no shame when it comes to weird fabrics.

    She was a symbolist, and she did not use any kind of support for her skirts and dresses: symbolists believed that the body had to be free to move and chill (or work). The dress had to be connected to the hearth and the nature, because for symbolist artists nature was the key of life. I’ve just studied her in fashion school and I really love her❤️

    I have basically no knowledge of fashion, however the fabric at the bottom of the photo appears as how you are planning to sew it.
    It looks like the fabric was cut straight across the stripes, then sewn back together except the white and black stripes were moved over by one so that there was a change from back to white abruptly in a straight line across. Perhaps further down she did that again, would have looked cool!!
    Also, I believe there may be some kind of pleat at the top. Reminds me of a kilt.

    Her look is very bohemian, of that time. A lot of women artists, of that era, had their own sense of style. Upon further research, she was, infact, a member of the Viennese bohemian and Fin de siècle circles. Funny enough, I was recently reading about the Victorian bohemian movement...in particularly Effie Gray. They were considered feminists, of the day. The original hippies. 🤔

    At 9:16 the lower portion of the skirt could be a separate underskirt. To the left it looks as though it is actually sewn, but in the middle, where it is fuller, it looks like it could be detached from the upper skirt. Perhaps the upper striped skirt reaches to a little lower than the knees. Then, there is another half skirt (tied to the waist) under the upper skirt. The under skirt could be made from muslin with the striped fabric compromising the bottom portion of the skirt only. The underskirt being tied at the waist would be covered by the loose upper skirt. Does this make any sense?

    You should do a collab with Loepsie, that would be cool :)
