      I never thought I would be interested in fashion history. I was reading books (and watching UA-cam videos) about the protestant reformation in the 17th century,. UA-cam suggested The Ultimate Fashion History: The 17th Century. I was hooked! I love what Amanda Haley says about fashion. "Fashion is not an island. It's a response." That's true of history in general.

    • @mariasja1234
      @mariasja1234 5 років тому +11

      Didn't find anything feminist on the UFH channel, let alone ''propaganda''. It's really a mistery what julijakeit is talking about.
      As for sharing her own opinions and taste sometimes, it's alright for me because my personal taste or opinion is not so fragile that the fact that someone has a different one can change it. Moreover, when she talks about her personal tastes she makes it in the most polite way possible. She doesn't impose them on her viewers. Everyone is bringing up their subjectivity when they talk about something. People are not robots, you can't avoid it.
      Apart from the things mentioned about this channel already, I like how she connects history of fashion to contexts of different eras, ideas and moods that used to be at that particular era and how they influenced fashion of that time. She also talks about art and artistic influences in fashion. These things really help to plunge into these eras and see the broader context. ''Fashion is not an island, it's a response'', as she says.

    • @BattyButtercup
      @BattyButtercup 3 роки тому +5

      On youtube, there's the Ask A Slave webseries which satirizes a black woman's more ridiculous experiences as a living history re-enactor. There is a wide range in age and body type among black historical costumers on instagram - the vast majority, however, cover colonial North America or rococo France. Cosplayers sometimes dabble in historic costuming, Disney bounders in particular, and that tends to be wider in scope. I've struggled to find non-American black historical costumers, though the musical SIX, about Henry VIII's wives, is gloriously diverse in both casting & fandom so THAT'S a possible lead.
      East Asian historical costumers I follow include Sewstine, Fresh Frippery (no youtube channel, sadly), and this awesome catwoman cosplayer who's done everything from comic-accurate 1960's to WWI/II bomber to regency. One of those channels that does "Historically Accurate [x film]" finally hired an ACTUAL historical costumer (as opposed to a vintage historian), a year or so back, sometime after their releasing a truly pitiful "How Historically Accurate Is Disney's Mulan" done by some white woman utterly out of her depth. More recently, cosplayer & meme queen was so DONE with Disney's Mulan 2020 that she made an entire youtube channel to post a video essay documenting its every cultural failing. She's since made a much more loving dissection of Mulan 1998, complete with tweets from some of the actual animators, owning up to errors that made it into the film & Rule Of Cool design decisions. Finally, for HISTORIC historic costuming, there is 5000 Years's Ali who, similarly to Prior Attire, demonstrates the correct wearing of hanfu in both an english & chinese-dubbed youtube channels.
      South Asian historical costumers... well, if you find any with english-language platforms, could you direct me to them? I've not had much luck finding SA vintage grammers either - there ARE a few historical arms bloggers who work at western museums and, while I've yet to find any of them actually dressing up in any armour, a few will post a pic of themselves "wielding" reproductions or genuine historic shields & katars!
      I'm rubbish at remembering names and faces but hopefully the bloggers I've forgotten thataways will be findable through the extenuating details I gave? If anyone recognises or can correct me on names, please do so!

    I already spend way too much time watching fashion history videos and now you give me a list of more channels I need to watch 😭😁. So now I go even farther down the rabbit hole that is CosTube. I may never watch Netflix again 🤣.

    Thanks for this! There are several here I haven’t heard of, but will subscribe. One suggestion - This is not a blog - its a tv show but it’s on You Tube and if you are interested in Historical Costume, it’s definitely worth watching the 5 or 6 episodes. It’s called A Stitch In Time, starring Amber Bouchard. Each episode takes a painting and recreates one outfit using period techniques and materials. I just wish there were more episodes.

    I don't know if you're familiar with the channel PostModern Jukebox. They're singing channel and they make covers of modern music in vintage style. I saw them live last year in Poznań and it was fantastic. I know they're coming to Poland again this year ;)

    A great "historical interpreter" I REALLY like is PriorAttire! The problem with MANY "vintage" channels is that even if they do a fine job with their own reproductive or modern take on vintage looks, they either admit to very little research or effort, or they don't talk about it whatsoever. That is what makes your channel special! But thank you for sharing them and some of them are SO cool!!

    I would also recommend Costuming Drama! she's friends with Cathy Hay and Bernadette Banner, and she makes mostly Edwardian era clothes, as well as some Regency and Victorian sprinkled in. She makes her own trims and things as well, which is an interesting note. Something really interesting that she does is that she sometimes makes historical clothes inspired by fiction, including an iron man dress, and an outfit for a "Lady John Watson" look for costume college 2019. She's a bit more sarcastic/relatable (at least, she is if you, like me, need a kick in the butt for motivation sometimes). Thank you for making this list! There are lots here I didnt know about and I'm excited to give their videos a try! ua-cam.com/channels/GfIQhkqB_CMTW7wVGYSz_A.html

    I know this isn't a UA-cam channel but the Unravel podcast focuses on historical fashion and the significance of fashion in history, with a lot of emphasis on people of color. Full disclosure: one of the women is the daughter of a good friend of mine (and she's a friend of mine as well). It's more scholarly and the presenters are academics and work in the fields of fashion and history. Check them out if you're interested. 🙂
