2010-2015 Toyota Prius Navigation Update Overview

- In this video, I am just talking about the process the dealership do to update your Navigation map on your Prius. This procedure can't be done by yourself since it require a technician to log into TIS to input the info in the drop down menu, and require their USB flash drive. The activation number will be purchased at the dealership to get access to the license key so that you can input it on your Prius to get the update. I hope this video helps you get a better understanding of what the dealership do to update your Navigation Map.
Toyota Prius
2010-2011 uses a CD to update your Nav. Map
2012-2013 uses a USB flash drive to update your Nav. Map
2014-2015 uses SD card to update your Nav. Map
The Prius Model II, and III uses a different head unit than the model IV

I have a 2010 model and just ordered my updated DVD for less then 15 and includes shipping. I personally love my navigation. It’s safer and feels professional
All is good, can you try connected to my toyota app after?
@@michapaszczynski4172 I have no clue
Hi, from were you order the update DVD ?
@@marior4789 Check eBay
Can you help me how to update my toyota avensis t27. My media is B9012. is it the same software like yours? Thanks!
Why are we being forced to pay for an update? Just use your phone and it’ll always be updated for free. But, thanks for the info.
@C Math My thoughts exactly. I just purchased a used 2010 w/ navigation and requires a map DVD to run. I'm sure by now Toyota has stopped making DVD updates. Plus my factory stereo is not always acting right. I'm thinking about upgrading to an good aftermarket stereo with Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
Exactly. Toyota want you to pay to remote start your car now too! Bull hockey!
So I went here in the UK to London Heathrow airport (international flights, long-haul), and after transporting the person there and seeing them off, returned, all using my outdated 2010 Prius gen 3 unit & software. The surprise is, the traffic updates it gets are up-to-the-minute. Road changes, new-builds aside, the actual traffic & road works/construction issues are kept accurate so must use the same system as brand new cars I think. The problem even google cannot save you from, is everybody else going on the same detour, that google itself sends us all to.
Now I have a sort-of-a-policy about alternate routes satnavs offer, I generally don;t take them. Often the destination has no sensible alternative route, and with google and other satnavs using the same sort of algorithms, the alternates also pretty soon pack full, and country roads don’t take much to block up. We live near a major motorway, and we know when that’s got a problem, because the local roads go nuts. Anyway, the thing is, the most important north-south motorway in the whole of the UK, the M1, was shut going south to the airport, but one of us checked it out and it actually would be finished road repairs, at 5am, half hour after we got there…so we slowed down to make sure it did.
Phew, very unusual but made it! Then, somebody decided to have a lorry fire (‘semi’ fire) on our return journey - again shutting the entire northbound road this time for a while/indeterminate. Ok, we had me spare in the car to navigate, and I figured a route different to google’s alternate, that cut us past the rapid-building traffic, instead of taking the google motorway-only deviation, we used smaller roads to ‘cut the corner’ as it were.
All of which is to say - google is no fix if everyone else is following the same fix. There’s no substitute for having a ‘spare’ person to act as navigator, who can verify what’s happening, In our case, neither google nor the Toyota system was bad, but the alternate was clogging fast, and the chances of that major road being blocked both journeys, we thought was zero. Instead, it was 100%! Updates, for my 2010 I can perhaps buy online, the ‘west europe’ is ours (UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain). My only concern is if something goes wrong part-way through the update, I don’t have the original disk. Last, as far as I am aware, I cannot say ‘google get me the fastest route from X to Y’ yet, which is what you really need. ‘X’ often being your present location, you oughtta be able to just specify ‘Y’, but I am not aware of anything that lets me do that - so still I have to stop to do it, or take risks in motion. Take care all.
I asked about updating my 2012 Prius's nav data. Toyota quoted me $250+ for map updates. I don't think so, what a rip off. I will continue using my phone.
Toyota should include free updates to the maps with the car, as an inducement to get people to service their car regularly at the dealership.
DNFU I agree, it’s pricey.
@@NutzAboutBolts Thank goodness for Apple and Google. Where would we be without them?
@@wturner777 Even with them you'll be lost when you have no cell service because you didn't think to download your maps ahead of time. 🤷♀️
Is the $250 for the map update and service fee to do it? Or is it OK for Toyota to sell update for 250 and owner can update this (legally)?
It would be nice if updates were free and could be done thru smartphone connected via USB or bluetooth.
...the Toyota dealers are told by the company how to make $$$ so this is one way if you are out of the free time...so now use you ma pquest on your phone !!!...so there Toyota !!!
Hi prius plus 2013 bluetooth and map doesn't respond can you help please ? Bluetooth and phone buttons doesn't respond at all when i press it.
my 2010 doesnt have the display unit is it extra option
2015 Toyota Prius Persona where can I find sd card location so I can install anyone know where please help?.!
love your other video on the prius egr cooler and intake manifold cleaning (which I did, along with OCC), but update to nav maps is pointless with cell phone google maps navs which are 100x better and never out of date. You can easily download over wifi for offline/no-data usage.
Some areas don’t have WiFi so we needed the Nav map update. Also it’s faster using the nav when we’re on the go. Phones can take a while to load when we’re on the go.
@@NutzAboutBolts no you download the map offline at home (you can do santa cruz to sacramento in just 1 area since you're around here) and trivial to do in google map (not sure if Waze has that as well), then it only checks for live traffic part if you have data/signal...
my 2012 does not look like this screen at all ?
I have 2013 how to do that?
My Prius 2012 plugin hybrid. The screen is constantly showing a message in Japanese "TO PRESS MENU BUTTON AND INSERT SD". Does anyone know how to remove this message and be able to use the screen for other things apart from navigation. Thx
Never read anything about it… have you tried asking on priuschat.com ?
I have the system model number B9019 fitted in my prius 2012, could you please guide me how I can update the map.
It’s dealership installed only. You won’t be able to update it by yourself.
@@NutzAboutBolts thanks for your reply.
Could you please provide me some solution regarding the gps is showing the current location. When creating a destination calculate distance and everything comes showing normally and start navigation but when physically moves the car the navigation point is not moving.
Can’t find the Cd
grazie .....molto chiaro
I also have 2012. Did update 2022? Are the 2022 updates compatible with 2012 vehicle
I wouldn’t waste it on the updates
Hello. I have a Toyota Prius 2012 3rd generation, Trim Five with Advance Technology Package, in Ecuador. Do you know how could I get the maps of Ecuador ? Thank you so much
Hi man, I can help you
Where to buy a CD for update maps for 2011 Toyota Prius 3 ? Thank you. I live in Romania. Can I buy online?
Usually eBay sells it
Mi radio no funciona ni el mapa y nadie me has podido resolver el problema quien por ahí me pueda ayudar por favor
doesnt show me how to update my 2013 prius.
My Prius+ doesn't have NAVI installed. Where can I get that done?
If yours didn’t come with a nav system, you will have to modify it to work. I think there’s a UA-cam video that explains you need an extra wire to hook up the nav. I haven’t done it myself so I can’t help on this one. Sorry
Excuseme, Where i can to buy usb flashdrive? and one usb for one vehicle or we can copy data to new usb flashdrive. thank you.
It was Toyota that supplies the usb drive. Even if you have the usb drive, you need to sign into TIS to get the license key after buying their activation number...
NutzAboutBolts ok, Thanks.
My is the 2012 year, and your radio menu and screen look different than mine. My model radio is the 57032
Yeah, there’s different radio models for different Prius models of the Prius. The Prius models 1-3 has different screen size than the model 4, so the part number will be different. Just ask the dealerships parts department and they can help you find the correct one for your vehicle
What happens if my 2012 II did not have GPS and I add one that I get from a recycle yard?
You might want to compare yours with the new one and see if all the back plugs in the back matches. It might have an extra plug for the Nav system...
@@NutzAboutBolts it will be a model 57032 date of manufacture is January 2015 Panasonic.. I'll be replacing a 57031 I already picked up a GPS to mount in the dash... The one I'm getting has all the cables including the XM module... well all the cables that go from the xm unit to the main unit.. Thanks
Marty Osborne GL, let me know if it worked out for you. Sometimes if the car doesn’t come with a nav system, it might not work but I’ve also read that you need to buy the harness for it and it’ll work. So I’d like to know how it’ll go.
@@NutzAboutBolts well, everything works.. I put in my own XM antenna and a Toyota GPS antenna... it was a bit of a pain... I did a software update for free from Toyota.. but not map update.. but it's a rather lame GPS system.. I really just wanted the XM... I mounted the XM behind my regular AM/FM... oh.. the HD radio works fine as there are a few HD station in the Spokane area that I can get here.... .. The GPS in my 08 Saab 9-7x 5.3i works much much better even though it's DVD based. I may get a GARMIN if I want to use the GPS in the Prius II... diagnostics on my Samsung tablet (Thinkdiag) Launch software... thinks the radio does not belong in the car. LOL
Marty Osborne glad to know it all worked out.

how we can change the language plzz help
I called my local Toyota dealer for my 2014 Prius model 4 and they told me it only takes a CD/DVD and they're updated in June and December of each year. I also asked if customer can update and they told me "Yes".
If your vehicle takes a CD, that’s even better. Not sure if eBay sells CD for your vehicle or not, but that’s where I’d check for cheap.
I have 2014 Prius Four with CD player. Thanks for that info. I was wondering if they continually update maps, being December, ill wait to make sure I get the update after december update. There has been major construction (new road interstate interchange/bypass) done a few years after I bought my 2014... these new roads don't exist in my nav.
@@thebluelunarmonkey I waited until this month (December 2021) and they told me that the map hasn't been updated since 2019. They also now tell me it has to be installed at the dealership. After this new information I decided not to upgrade. I guess I'll just use Google Maps on my phone?
I've got a 2015 Five with the same Navi and USB process. But I went in last year and they told me to wait. Now they are telling me that there is no update. The parts department guy is an idiot. So should I be avoiding the parts department guy and going straight to the repair techs?
2014 five. Same.
@@heather54101 Ended up talking to the service tech I usually deal with. Got the update done through the service department because it needed their special code etc etc. But it got done. Either my specific Toyota had never done it or my Service Tech had never done it, but it was new to them. New update was super helpful after moving though.
And yes my parts guy was/is an idiot. I usually hope someone else is in there when I have to ask for something. But now I'm in Texas so luckily I don't have to deal with him anymore.
@@adamtoepfer5565 thanks-- I'm due for a state inspection and will ask them if they can do an update.
@@heather54101 Just ask your service tech when you go in. High possibility they will need to order it though. They had to order mine and I went back in a week or so later.
Where can I download the update file for the 2013 Prius?
You’ll have to pay for the code to update it at the dealership. I’d say just use your Waze app on your iPhone, these updates are not worth the cost.
I just went to a dealer for an update, and they said they had to order it and that they couldn't. But it was a small dealership in a small town. Would this be the kind of thing a larger dealership would have?
@@BluePalmetto yes, most dealership should have it in stock. If yours rare, they’d have to special order it.
Es un prius 2011 y no funciona el mapa ni el radio
$188 wtf
For that almost $200 update, just buy a new Garmin device with lifetime map update. Of course, it's not looking nice as the head unit.
Understandable. I found its more nicer to have a clean look for the car and if in the future we do end up selling the car, we can say we paid for the update and it’ll add value to the car.
IT'S BETTER TO JUST BUY AFTERMARKET HEAD UNIT THAT'S WAY MORE CAPABLE THAN THIS
my 2018 maps stink nd never use them. is the upgrade worth it vs just using google maps on my phone? Thanks
It’s worth it since the navigation map works where there is no receptions for your phone. But id wait till it’s been crazy outdated before I update it lol
@@NutzAboutBolts you can very easily download google maps over wifi for offline use. Great way to save on data (online live traffic), and I do it all the time when traveling over to europe as well as area without great signals here.
Last time I bought a DVD nav for my Acura MDX I got used ones on ebay for 1/3 the price, but really I never use it now with cell phones.
Alain Dumesny true, personal preference. I hate the google maps. I usually use Waze since it’s live update traffic. The oem nav is nice for on the go since it doesn’t load for along time when mapping your destination, and adds value to the car in the future if I end up selling it.
@@NutzAboutBolts I highly doubt an 8 years old car nav is faster that today's cellphones - and probably not taking into account live traffic (which as you know makes all the difference in the bay area) vs a cell phone with pre-loaded maps so you don't have to download with bad signal...
The reality car built in system are pretty much obsolete the moment they ship unless they have Android auto/Apple carplay. My loaded 07 MDX with nav, voice command, Blue Tooth (stopped working a few years later - known issue with honda/accura with lawsuit going on) became old school a few year after I bough it and I never use it now.
I wish cars would stop trying to sell you fancy electronics when they should just be a dumb screen terminal and use your cellphone to drive it instead. Much easier and cheaper to upgrade anyway....
Yeah I'd rather buy a whole new android 10 based headunit on Aliexpress for that money !
Plus I get a 10" screen !
Well you can, but I just like the clean look of not having any GPS hanging on my car. Also, it adds value to the Prius if in the future I end up selling it, since the map is updated .
@@NutzAboutBolts so does the 10" Android screen and I think the majority of People would prefer the more modern solution equipped with Android auto and carplay...
@@leonisbacher1772 I know I would. Those factory systems are considered dated now.
@@wturner777 "Dated" is probably giving it too much credit. The factory nav in my 2014 Prius Four (i.e. the upgraded unit) is borderline unusable due to its slow, clunky interface. I have an Android phone that''s almost as old as the car and only cost $100 new that provides a faster, smoother, better navigation experience. With updated maps!
A $200 update won’t fix how extremely horrible the nav and voice recognition are in my 2012 V model…never should have purchased this car with the nav upgrade, TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY !!
True, I still get horrible route from the nav directions lol
@@NutzAboutBolts yes! sometimes my prius will make me drive in a needless loop sometimes.
@@thebluelunarmonkey yeah… I use Waze on my iPhone lol
..and the dealer will charge you up to $250 +/-...if you are past the free time !!
Toyota dealer: $170 for "part", $180 for service. Year of last program update 2019. Easier to install a new radio.
I believe they update every 4 years or so… I’d just wait or go with Waze using your phone. It’s pricey
@@NutzAboutBolts great to see you're still out there.
2013 PRIUS V: Got all four TPMS units replaced at Walmart for $135 and a lifetime alignment at Pepboys for $135.
2004 Prius: Hybrid battery from Green Bean. $1500 + with lifetime warranty. Fixed on site.

@@elysianfields6350 thank you. Nice to see your Prius are running strong.
@@NutzAboutBolts just saw that coolant solutions don't last longer than 30000 miles.
@@elysianfields6350 which coolant solution?
I bought a new 2013 Prius 3 with solar roof, I never liked the navigation system, I had to stop the vehicle to enter the address. The voice command couldn't hear me due to road noise. I totalled the Prius, the insurance paid me 18K. I bought a 2007 basic Accord and I use Google maps and Garmin with free life-time maps update. I saved the extra cash from the insurance.
With gas prices under $3.00 it's not worth it buying a hybrid.
I have the 2006 accord, I hate it lol. I like the hybrid more because of the drive and the gas saving. Accord only gets 20-23 mpg, kinda hate that.
this didnt age well
Yeah agree with some responses, in the UK, gasoline/petrol hit £9 a UK gallon, so let’s call it ten bucks US. Of course, our UK government coins in more per gallon than the oil company does - that’s what we call a ‘conflict of interest’ when it comes to the govt stepping-in to control gas/petrol prices!
Toyota system bullshit teft toyota
where is that software ? .
