Great test and spectacular SUV. Can't believe we're now at the point on the timeline where Kyle isn't that happy with sustained 15 minutes at 200kW charging on a Kia. Times are wild.
Especially in the cold where I could see his breath.

More energy added in 15 min than Lucid Air and nearly as much as Taycan. What a beast! I want to road trip one of these.
Kia is promising vehicle, but these need more range to be competitive road trippers where many of us want to be able to efficiently travel. I frequently cross areas of the west, where fast chargers are still quite spread out, even on interstates.
I used A Better Route Planner app to see how the EV9 does on many routes I frequently travel. Rivians and Teslas still beat the LR AWD EV9 by significant margin, apparently due to their longer range. See example below.
An often overlooked benefit of longer range is faster charging, and frequently significantly faster.
When you need to “fast charge” above 60% or more, all EV charging speeds get significantly slower to protect the battery from excess heat. Longer range EVs greatly reduce the need to charge near the max capacity of the battery. For those long legs between chargers, that are still common in many areas, longer range EV’s can do them changing to a lower percentage so they keep charging speeds faster.
Throw in some cold weather, wind and precip and it gets even more important to have the big battery.

@@e2dub When I put model X I got 10:35, for R1S 10:06 and for EV9 9:59. Different conditions than you put (like no extra weight, 90 % arrivals and other stuff) but same condition for every car. Pretty sure you have to made some mistake there, I cannot imagine any condition that would make EV9 worse but the other two cars so much better.
@e2dub that is not true that all EVs get slower charging after 60%! The e-tron stays at 149Kw all the way to 80%. The EV9, when I charged 10% to 80% the other day stayed at 201Kw all the way to 78% then dropped to 195kw by the timeit hit 80%. This was on a mild day in Northern Georgia.

We test drove this one about two weeks ago and my wife is ALL in and sold on this for her first EV. Spectacular vehicle and your videos have me even more ready for it, but we want to wait till closer to 2025 and it getting access to the Tesla network. Very impressive vehicle and she thought she’d never trade in her Pallisade.

I agree, in the US, the 10% challenge is the most relevant EV test.
There is one other that is also a good and relevant test. Bjørn Nyland's 1,000 km Challenge is also a very useful test for comparison of EV models.
Bjørn is based in Norway and sometimes Thailand. So he doesn't have all the same models to test.
Manual preconditioning and down to 10% is awesome. The preconditioning method used in Ionic5 and 6 is cumbersome and annoying
Dear Kia, if you see this, please give us some kind of dog mode. That's the only major downside I can see for myself since I have a service animal that goes with me everywhere. Awesome video Kyle, you're killing it with these reviews. Have a awesome New Year!

@@spazzman90 You're right, I shouldn't call it a down side, but it would be nice to have a setup that will notify me if for some reason the air turns off, or there is a issue like Rivian does. Where I live, it can get to 120 degrees in the summer, so I would rather be cautious. Other than that, I got to drive one of these yesterday, and I love it.
Kyle....you are the man. This is the PERFECT roadtrip test for EV power-users who actually know how to drive an EV. 10% + 12-15 minutes of charging is my gold standard in my LR RWD Model 3. If I look at all of my charging sessions on road trips, it's almost always 12-15 minutes with a rare 20 minute session if there is a bigger gap between chargers. This just shows that you are a true expert and understand EVs.

That's because the Tesla charging curve is meh at best. You gotta be deep in the pack for any decent speed and it tapers off way too fast.
This is the definitive source for independent EV testing. Would love a separate video where you go through the OBD II app and explain all the parameters and how they apply to EV charging performance and efficiency. Happy New Year!

Thank you, this series was very informative. 260miles on a 100% charge, driving at 70mph. Driving it at 80mph you used 47% for a distance of 94miles - so you would get approx.200miles on a 100% SOC.

Kyle, you should ask KIA give you a 2024 Niro wave to do these tests too, so you have the level entry and the expensive one. I know you did the Niro review one year ago in California, I believe. Just an idea.

thanks for the video, this is exactly what we need. Kyle, do any EVs allow you to pre-heat battery manually, and then it holds the temp for a certain amount of time? Otherwise you have to "guess" when to start heating, based on your gestalt of the outdoor temperature, miles remaining to charger, etc. thanks again.
This kind of stuff makes me happy that the speed limits in my area are 60mph. While people are regularly going 70+, as long as you stick to the right lane, you can do 60mph safely and get so much more range. I've only had my EV9 for a couple weeks, but I think the fastest I've gone in it so far is 70mph. At 60mph should be able to beat the EPA estimates easily, seeing considerably over 300 miles in the GT-Line.
this is what i wanted to know. i live in an urban area, and i don't get to go faster than 60-65 very often, and when i do it usually isn't for more than 10-15 minutes.

Great video. What are your thoughts about out the lack of reliable DC fast chargers? In Canada (Ontario) along the 401 corridor the only reliable network is Electrify Canada. Ivy and Petro Canada never deliver the stated speed they claim which makes reliable road tripping difficult.

I think instead of maintaining the temperature for the manual preconditioning, it should just tell you an estimation of how much time it'll take to be at a good temperature, so you can time it perfectly
Would love to see you do 10% with an EV6! I feel like the EV6 has been forgotten with all the hype for new EVs but it is still a great car (and a great deal used!)
Ev6 was too overpriced for what it was. There are other ev’s that do better than it and can be easily replaced. It has better efficiency storage space range tech etc.
Great to see another EV for larger families in the market. Hopefully the batteries end up being reliable and we see them in the used market in good shape.

Don't think its much, but then again its cold: did Kyle precondition the car too early? so preconditioning twice burns a bit more energy? On my Ioniq 5, normally it preconditions about 15 minutes or so (maybe 20?) before I reach the charger? Not a huge impact on range, but it does impact range. Though saves TONS fo time!
Will you do this type of testing/range test with the brand new Kona EV 2024? I'd like to see that!

Every EV should have a 10% test. This is about the most important test for road tripping

Can you get ev9 with chargeport in the Tesla side? When realistic roadtripping people use superchargers.
If the HVAC system works anything like the eNiro, the battery heat will most likely be transferred into the cabin for heating, using the heat pump.

Mach e, about 460 miles travel with elevations going from NYc to Port Clinton OH.
We land at the chargers with 15-20%. We spend about 40-50 minutes to push to 95-97% to get to the next stop

@@michaelm.wiseman282 It's the app I've seen folks use in conjunction with an adapter to plug in the vehicle's OBD diagnostic port. Kyle on Out of Spec often uses one.
What’s the app you use to read the SOC data?
You need a new test. No driver is going to un plug before the charging rate slows down. My car has a full speed rate, then a 25% lower rate and I let it charge all through that level, and then I disconnect when the next speed break starts at about 50% speed
Did this test happen for ev6 and ionic 5?
Interesting how quickly that battery cools down while driving. My Rivian, after DC charging, stays in the 90°F range (in the menu). Do you see the same in your earlier VIN R1T?
The Kia and Hyundai vehicles have heat pumps with heat scavenging, similar to modern Teslas. The HVAC system will tap into battery heat for cabin heating....the EV9 has a large cabin to condition.
You should do Race to Vegas in SUVs this year. Especially since you have the Model X.
This might be buried in the comments but what OBD scanner is being used to get the data and stats on the car while performing the tests?
Depending by wind . Pendence of road...temp...etc...information are for ideal situations with no wind. Pendence..temp. 25 celsus..etc..
I would love if we could get a chart comparing charge rate with all of the BEVs you guys have tested.
I've seen charts that show percent vs time, but these charts fail to take into account efficiency/how many miles you get with that percent.
A better chart could show MILES vs TIME SPENT CHARGING. Starting at 10% charge.

I would love to see these tests done at 20min instead of 15 as its probably closer to real world road trips. I normally stop after about 2h which would be closer to 140 miles
20:20 I am a subscriber from S. Korea, recently owned EV9 GT-line, leaving comments about rear suspension. As far as I know, all EV9s are equipped self-leveling conventional coil spring, not air suspension.
I just wonder there a difference in suspension for US export EV9s. If it is, Korean EV9 owners may upset and eager to equip in aftermarket lol

@@michaelm.wiseman282Yes it is. Swiveling is not recommended while driving. It may be useful while parking (by the sea or somewhere with nice view 👍)
If the GT line is the only model that gets the meridian sound system and the others can’t have it as an option that would be a killer for me.

thanks for sharing this test! i find it difficult to understand why we are calling it a great road trip vehicle though. at 2 miles per kW (and 40c per kW of charging at the stations you used) this Kia’s equivalent MPG is ~14 which is terrible at best. For example, for a gallon of regular gas ($2.80) you can buy 7 kWs which will last for 14 miles. I love the design and roominess but given the limited availability of charging stations and expensive kWs, any ICE vehicle will outperform this baby.
80 MPH though, with temperatures below 30F and required preconditioning for the following stop. From what I see online, the gas Telluride will achieve 20-21MPG at those speeds, probably less below 30F with denser air. Sure, the slightest edge at 80, on a road trip, will go towards the Telluride, but falling back onto daily use, in the city, while charging at home, costs of refueling will favor the EV9.
Of course, no one considering an EV9 would realistically consider a Telluride, given the upfront costs, unless they were comparing it to a 3 row Volvo, Audi, BMW etc.
@@wzDH106 i agree but that’s why i wouldn’t call it a great road tripping vehicle - daily use in city/charging at home is something completely different - perhaps we should be calling it a great looking, spacious 3-row electric vehicle around town.
Wish they would update my Kia ev6 with manual preconditioning. Not all chargers are listed in their nav system
just navigate to ANY DC charger (and do real navigation on your phone)

I was never a fan of 3-row suvs, but they’re becoming more and more appealing to me (occasional need to transport 5 big people, plus I also camp in the car) but this is unfortunately about $20k out of my budget.
Odd that they’ve wired the battery in such a way that it reduced the battery voltage on the big battery. It would have been nice if they maintained the same battery voltage as the other egmp batteries (mostly in the 700v range). Seems like this one also runs a bit hotter than the other egmp cars, I only see 47c on my ioniq5 on hot summer days, even though it charges faster and has a smaller battery.
Hopefully the EV6 will get the 10% capability and manual option for preconditioning.

24:23 I think holding battery temperature with conditioning while driving would introduce a lot of inefficiency, especially when there's so little value outside of hitting peak charging speeds. The best solution is obviously having it integrated with Nav, letting the car time the activation to match the next charging stop. In the absence of that, the car should display the time required to bring the battery to ideal temperature, and then the driver could manually activate based on their arrival time.

Price of DC fast charging. Charge at home, or work, for $6 - $8. Unless one lives in California, we won't talk about California....

$0.08/kWh in Washington. Cost is approximately $7 to drive 250 miles using home rates.
I'm not sure if Colorado has time of use rates. Utilities may offer such residential rates, but that doesn't necessarily translate to a similar structure on the commercial level for DC fast charging. I'm sure demand changes apply in most cases as we're talking 150 or 350 kW at any given moment using DC charging, as opposed to a light 7kW at home. We don't have TOU rates in Washington.

So, had a Hyundai IONIQ 5 as a daily driver, but I my work involves taking packages (a lot of them) to the uS Post office daily, and due to the INIQ 5's size, cargo room (while big for its type and bigger than EV6's) It is not big enough to where I'm making multiple trips a day, not efficient for time (and size of IONIQ vs. EV6 is why I picked IONIQ because I like look f both, but liked interior of Kia better). I think I"m going to order a green one like the GT-Line you tested here, but in Land trim (unless somebody can convince me GT-Line has something that you MUST have over Land). I will end up trading a Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid & the Hyundai for EV9! May still need to buy a truck for work, but not having the hybrid (which I bought for the 7 passenger capacity, which the Kia will have) will make room for a car since parking where I live is limited since its one of those narrow streets where you can't alwways find parking by the house and have to rely on the two spaces on the driveway. Was hoping Jeep would release a 4Xe version of its gladiator, but We'll see what I do. For now, Kia EV9 will simplyfy to one car (work & daily driver, should have enough cargo room... Will watch Bjorn's banana box test though :)
So, right now the competitors for this car (and I'm talking 6-7 passenger 3-row SUVs) are the Rivian R1S, Tesla Model X( don't say Y, that's a toddler seat), Mercedez Benz EQS SUV & EQB, and is the Fisker 3 row? Not sure... Oh, and the EX90 if that one is out yet. Did I miss any?
Mention price of car for data and epa rated. So we can compare easily what we are getting into
An hour to charge is completely acceptable for me. No worse than my cell phone.
I said it before & I’ll say it again. This is real interesting stuff. It’s very informative & good information to know about. However whenever you do a test & try to have the most ideal conditions it’s NOT real world, it’s not a real world application nor is a more realistic test. This is a test that is as clinical as possible without being on a closed loop. This is closer to being an alpha test rather than beta test which is something that’s put out in the real world for everyday use in actual real conditions.
Give 10-15 challenge data as dougmeuro. Model name & year manufactured, temp weather, price of car at that time, tyres, kw gained in 15, miles burned, (+ extra info -total car driven at time of test)
When this gets native supercharger network access it will be the car
So you have to recharge every 100miles If you 10% charge for only 15m
as for the 100 miles for benchmark, my trips so far on IONIQ 5, they range quick stops between 90-115 or so miles, so Yeah, this car will be great! :) IONIQ is amazing, and will be sad to let it go... May consider keeping IONIQ and buy EV9 if I can, but if I need to buy a truck, Hyundai will likely go :( Not that I'm getting worst car.
Will be interesting to see what 2024 brings. Why buy an ev with only ccs port when nacs is around the corner? Adapter doesn't seem to matter given most Tesla chargers will still have the short cord issue. CCS cars taking up more than 1 space in 2024 will be interesting to say the least.
