You showcased this very well. Sounds excellent. Well done Gabe! JU-06A is next on my radar!
So relieved you’re doing a review on a synth I already own 😅 this thing is a real treat ✨
Wow. What a pleasant surprise. Maybe because it's not a groovebox, I wasn't expecting it, but fits the flow of the channel well. 10/10!
As someone who had his teenage years during the 80's I can tell you your music always takes me back there. I use your samples to get my own 80's vibes.
You got some awesome sounds out of there. Of all the Roland Boutiques, this is the one that interests me the most. Thanks for such a detailed first impressions vid!
It’s not just you as a zoomer who finds this legit. I’m a 47 year old gen xer who grew up in the 80s (I’m basically the age all the kids from Stranger Things would be today), and I can confirm, this is a serious 80s vibe. Gonna need to buy one of these!!
Same here! Had two Junos back in the day and was looking for a smaller recreation or emulation of the original and I completely missed this... Had no idea this was released! I'm going to need to get one before the prices go even higher.
80s had the most interesting music - that’s why you hear it everywhere…
Agreed! I am 55 and instantly fell in love the moment Gabe started the first tune on this device. Love it!
OMD is touring the US next year and Tears for Fears announced a new album!
Absolutely agree with you. The sound I'm getting through my sound system.......I have to have this. It's not even a doubt lol
The secret to the Juno is activating both choruses, pads are instantly 800x more magical once they're drenched in that iconic dual chorus.
That applies to the MC-101/707 too.
lots of hiss on the original 106 chorus
I find the I+II mode too strong for most purposes. It becomes more of an effect than an enhancement. (Side note: On the real hardware, you can only do that trick on the 6 and 60. Doesn't work on the 106.)
Great video, Gabe! I think my JU-06A sounds super dope, as well. One of my all time favorite synth modules that I will never part with. Looking forward to more videos with you rocking out on the juno!
I used to own a Juno 106 and yes, this is very close to the original. This unit sounds great and is hands on, but for those of you who prefer working in the box, the TAL UNO-LX is very, very accurate, has a great interface and does not use much CPU. TAL is a great devloper, updates his VSTs often (including Apple M1 compatibility). I also recommend the spookily accurate TAL J-8 (Jupiter 8) which is a beast!
TAL is a badass.
I agree. I’ve owned several Juno 106’s and the Tal UNO-LX is so good I sold my last Juno because of it. Spent an evening A/Bing between both and put my 106 on eBay the next day.
Still have my Juno 106 that I bought new in the 80's and yes the Tal series are pretty spot on!
@@everlyfamily please don't part with your 106 over it 🙏
I used to own a 106 and I also Like the TAL emulation quite a bit.
Dude yes! I absolutely adore my JU-06A. So hyped that you finally got one!
That intro literally gave me shivers up my spine. The chords and the sound were just perfet :)
That sounded killer around the 10 min mark. Very cool vibes, and nice demo.
Great demo, just bought one - can't wait to use it
Sick vid! I bought the Roland SE-02 a few months ago and it has served me well. Glad to see that others are also enjoying these boutiques (bc people love to hate on them lol).
I think this is my favourite video of yours. I played with this in the store and loved it. The jx-03 is really nice too.
Awesome!! This was a great video. I had one of these back in January but eventually ended up going for a Deepmind12. Can’t wait to see how you use this thing. 👍
Love the sound design on the JU-06A. It's intuitive and it sounds great.
Awesome video & awesome sound!
I got my JU-06A last week. Exceeded expectations. Still not quite there yet regarding sounding like the original but it's unnoticeable in a mix. It sounds and feels like a Juno. Even the chorus is spot on. I was concerned that the tiny sliders with the small amount of travel would be difficult to find sweet spots but had no problems. You wont be disappointed. Sounds great out the box but the real magic is running it through the SSL Native Channel strip and boosting the upper mids.
That jam 10 minutes in sounds great. Sweet video.
Thank you for the video, i think it sounds fantastic!
That's a great demo and music too 👏🙂 so in the spirit of the 80's
Loving your music
Oh no, this Ju-06a is the one that has put me on the expensive Journey. G.A.S.
"maximum lack of clutter" had me dead lmao
wow this sounds fantastic
i had a juno 60 back when they were a new product. I cannot believe what they sell for today.
Nice video! Keep going!
I freakin love my JU-06A. Such an amazing piece of gear for the price. MC-101 + TR-6S + JU-06A = endless possibilities.
Whoa, quite nice combo! If i won’t find anything close to mc101 in terms of synth engine, i’ll probably get one.
That is a nice combo. I have the 101 and the SH-01A but now considering the JU-06A 😅
Mc-101, tr-6s, ju-06a and sh-01a, that would be very cool! I have an Mc 101 and tb-3.
my live sets are with the 101 and 6S - i'm thinking of adding the JU06A - how do you implement it in the setup?
@@AUW-music I use a Keystep 37 or Launchkey Mini to play it. Midi cables with a midi thru box or just daisy. Depends on if I'm at home or not. One great thing is if you don't mind mono is that you can take a trs to 3.5 breakout cable and run the MC-101 and TR-6S thru the mix in on JU-06A. And either run the ju thru a tascam dr-05x and flatten them all to mono, or use a zoom h6 and run them all to their own inputs. Makes for a great one bag portable set up. And with the zoom you can easily record the ju and then export the Mc and tr straight to your daw.
I've been looking for setups examples to accomplish this exactly; thanks for sharing!!!
Sounds great👍🏻
Gotta say I love my SH01a and JU06a, both great sounding recreations. God only knows why Roland stopped making them.
Own an OG Juno 6 and i still think this boutique looks and souds really good. I heard it even has a feature to turn the chorus noise on and off for that extra authenticity. A truly magical instrument with really nice bass.
Wow may you are awesome I love your piece
As a hobby jazz guitar player... i got invited to work on some 80s synth music. One the machines was this one. I'm 48... so i know the eighties. It was just an amazing feel to compose music with these instruments. Especially this one.. you can really recreate the 80s with this.. some pretty addictive sounds in there. Love watching these videos as well... get me acquainted with the synth universe... lol. Thanx for this exposé...!
Really nice device and sound! :)
Good stuff as always Gabe!
When you eventually want a properly vintage board, I'll fix something up for you 😅😁
Don't sell him your mopho!!!!
Love the new Roland Boutiques & Cloud VST's
Thx 4 the upload 😋
man, one of these days I want to get Roland's d-05 synth. this sounds phenomenal though!
Very cool 80s vibes!
That thing is the business. I really need one.
Great little module. I have an Alpha Juno, but still use this one quite a bit.
9:56 & 13:50 These sound so good! Thanks for the awesome video! 💙
Tee Hee: "Old Heads" I resemble that remark! :-) Thanks for posting, Gabe! :-)
Oh my-it does the soundtrack to Ocarina of Time right out of the box! That's is some slow clap Lols! :-)
Oh wow-Nova tracks plus Roland = Synthwave Beatdown! It's hilarious! :-)
DAMN IT, GABE! Now I want one of these!!! XD
I had no idea this existed. Now I want one
0 man that 80's vibe is lit
Nice track. Can't beat that classic Juno sound. Even with only four voices, this thing delivers the goods. If only they could have figured out how to make it efficient enough for six voices, I would buy one of these in a heartbeat. I went with the System-8, which supports eight voices and can host up to three ACB emulations (you can swap them out whenever you want).
For the price, 4 voices gives you a lot. They can be chained, so for $400 more you can get 8 voices. $800 bucks is reasonable if you need more than 4 voices.
@@mr.b7586 True. However, the voice chaining is a bit wonky. It only sends notes to the chained device if you're holding more than four notes. If you have a patch with a long release and play a bunch of single notes in a row, it will start stealing voices when it hits 4. What you'd expect it to do is not steal voices until all 8 voices are in use, but it doesn't work that way.
fire bro
This pairs very nicely with the retro futurism pack that came out recently for the tracks. Might have an impulse buy here as I don’t have anything Roland synth in my life yet.
I was playing around with the pack the other day and yes, it sounds great with this synth. I'll have to do a video on it eventually.
@@GabeMillerMusic indeed! Glad to see you having fun as usual!
I have considered it, but I think I might go for the Deepmind instead, as that's analog with great built-in effects and 6-12 voices depending on the model.
The JU-06A sounds great though, and it's footprint considered it is perfect for your minimalist setup.
Cool to see videos like this as well, great stuff as always, Gabe!
Edit: And relistening to the part around the 9--10 min mark and onwards; you were not the only one with a grin, it did subconsciously put a smile on my face as well, it sounds so good!
I think Roland hit a sweet spot with the boutiques and it is a pity they are not bringing more out. As you note they feel like a real instrument in a small form factor. Micro USB and 3.5mm jacks are a bit of a downside but full size midi is a plus. The original Juno was probably the first affordable poly synth and the chorus gave a nice spacey effect for most amateur and small band users who typically could not afford separate FX back in the day. In the 80s FX were generally a lot less affordable, and it wasn’t until the late 80s that we had anything approaching an affordable reverb other than spring reverbs built into some guitar amps. Hence the legend of the Juno chorus was born. In terms of the synth capabilities having owned one back in the day, it did a few things very well, and it was quick to dial in sounds, but the complexity of the sounds you could create was fairly limited. I didn’t miss it when I upgraded to the DW8000.
It sounds like exactly what it is: a digital version of the Junos. I don't know why Roland didn't do non-mini units, same with Yamaha and the amazing sounding Re-face series
That's my new favorite thing: maximum lack of (something) 😂 also i was hoping roland would send you the sp404mkii. I'm in need of more videos of it while i wait for mine to finally ship 😂
Ordered one, I want that sound at 9:56 Awesome!
Smiles, joy and fun ... What else ? 🥰
It's a good time!
5:30 hits that gameboy color OST feeling just right, god damn. Feels like I'm playing the Zelda Oracle games again haha
8:23 smooth save!
Awesome vid again Gabe, do you plan to do videos of Jd-08 and Jx-08 boutiques too?
Definitely one of the "better" Roland Boutiques in my opinion. Not just because of the "sound", but also because of the "layout", even on such a small scale, I find this particular "Roland Boutique Synth" MUCH easier to use than "some" of the others. This ones size, faders and knobs are "just right" and not as compact and tight as "some" of their previous Boutique gear. Glad they removed the Sliders on the left side, to make that extra space for the layout. Also really like that it is basically 2 x synths in "One". And YES! The "SOUNDS" are really beautiful. I never thought about hooking up my "Boutiques" to my Novation Circuit or even my Elektron Model:Cycles. So this clip has now inspired me to do exactly that! Great video and info as usual Gabe. Thank you!
"Good" "comments"
sounds bananas, need to get one of those synths. what drum pack are you using for this?
I don’t have aJU-06A, but I do have the closely related SH-01A, which, unlike the SH-101, has a 4-voice poly mode. Great fun! Enjoy!
Nice, I might have to give that a go at some point.
The SH-01A is my favorite boutique of them all. Like the original SH-101, it's so easy to dial in the perfect bass or lead sound (or drums and SFX too). I can find a place for it in every track. The ability to save presets and have up to four voices are just a couple of the many improvements over the original.
I didn't even know this existed until I was watching another video on the Roland SP-404, and saw the guy input this into the groovebox. My eyes about fell out of my head! This looks infinitely more easy to use than the DX7. But at $400, why not buy both? I too like miniature things, mostly because I have a space issue in a 500 sq ft. studio apartment!
Looks/sounds awesome -- the only reasonable detractions that resonate with me are complaints that four voices are too limited to properly anchor seventh chords with an additional bass note. For the asking price, I'm not sure that this is an issue -- could almost afford two!
And you can chain them for 8 voices
I had one but sold it as it seemed redundant with the MC707/101 and my Reface CS… the biggest issue is the limited polyphony but I do really like this synth!
I love my Reface CS - so quick to dial in sounds and sits comfortably next to my real analogue synths in the mix. My JP-08 sounds like an mp3 next to the real thing.
This is just not true, I owned a Juno 106 for many years, so I should know! There might be a small difference in the tone due to the original having a bit of subtle distortion, but hey, its subtle! I actually no longer care, this and the TAL VST are close enough!
@@lundsweden I love the TAL one too! Great & cheap plugin to get some Juno juice :)
Not quite the same sound on the 707/101. Doesnt quite hit the sweet spot.
Hey Gabe, you should do a video using a multitrack mixer (Model 12, Soundcraft MTK...) with the MPC One and a few synths if you have the chance. Not sure if you had covered that already, but it would make for a nice video :)
I suspect that "sparkle" is the harmonic content of square wave based tones. Square waves are the only waveform that really competes with the sawtooth, when it comes to subtractive sythesis, because triangles & sine waves simply lack the harmonic richness needed, to interact interestingly with a filter. My understanding, further, is that square waves are prone to ringing at the edges, introducing FM-like, metallic qualities.
Frick, now I want one too ^^
Question: What drum samples were you using in the synthwave song? Are they in your $5 sample pack?
Most of them are in my $5 sample pack, except for the snare, which I got off Splice.
Hey hey nice one.. as a fellow zoomer, i suggest you try the Behringer deep mind synths. They're proper analog unlike the boutiques and they provide so much for a ridiculous low price (you can find used dm6 for 400 last time I checked)
I would not call it an emulator, but more of a recreation. It is built with the same tech that Roland used to replicate in software their famous hardware (same tech used for the System1 and Sytem8 I believe). Very nice device; quite expensive though for a software in a hardware box :)
I was wondering if you can compare the synth engine of the microfreak, circuit, and this Juno and try to make similar patches. I like how this Juno sounds but it's pretty cold to me
I would be interesting if you could test the combination of Circuit Tracks and Boss RC-5.
If midi sync between the units is easy it would be possible to add vocal or/and guitar loops.
Owned a 106 since childhood. The really special thing about it is when it's in unison mode (I.e. as a monosynth) and with the glide switched on. It's incredibly unpredictable when set that way. The voice chips never quite sync up correctly and sounds come out of it that are not unavailable anywhere else with any sort of kit... unfortunately this emulator unit does not behave like that at all, so it is ultimately not a "patch" on the original.
That's good to know, I figured there would be at least a couple of limitations on the emulation.
Mista bishi you’re a legend. 🤟🏻🤟🏻
No way, that Juno 106 Unison mode is waay too phat, although its true the oscillators are ver sloppy!
If Roland had made these 6 voice, they would be the mic drop of mini desktop synths. Still love them though.
That was a silly move on their behalf, I would have added a hardware chorus too and it would have been killer but with a DAW its not really an issue.
I don’t really understand who would but this at this point, now that the nymphes exists
Congratulations with new synth! Thanks for reviewing it. Have you new headphones?
Thanks! The headphones are the Audio Technica ATH-M40s, I've had them for a while but have been using them on camera more often lately.
@@GabeMillerMusic 🧢+🎹+🎧 = Gabe Miller!
😀
Will have this on Thursday just to say as I just found out this not a 4 voice polyphonic synth, it’s a 4 note polyphonic synth.
Real neat, Gabe! Apart from tangible control, does it have the same engine, so can make same sound as 101/707/MV1 or there is something it can do? I never realized you could play those buttons for notes :)
Thanks! As far as I know, it's a different engine than the Zencore synth engine. Making it more confusing is that there's a Zencore computer expansion for Juno stuff, but that's also not the same thing. I'm 99% sure that the JU-06A is its own, self-contained synth engine.
@@GabeMillerMusic Maybe its for the best its all separate and this is (lil) synth on its own. You also exposed some real nice Synthwave targeted tones, I somehow missed hearing before, when the thing was released (or I was acute moogaholic at the time :)
Like the other boutiques (except the digital D-05 and actually analog SE-02), the JU-06A is based on ACB (analog component behavior), which is different from both Zencore (a general synthesis architecture) and the newer ABM (analog behavior modeling) model expansions (in the Jupiter-X/Xm, Fantom, and Zenology). ACB emulations are more detailed and accurate, but they require a lot more computation, which is why the poly boutiques are limited to only four voices. The model expansions (ABM) are less DSP-intensive, which allows them to support a lot more voices, but they're still too heavy to run on the basic Zencore hardware (MC-101/707, MV-1, RD-88, AX-Edge). I know that's a lot of names in one paragraph, but I hope it clears things up a bit.
Great video as always I can't find a manual anywhere for this unit, do you have a link please?
Hi I warched your video about Maschine Mikro Mk3.
How did you make
Your Shure MV7 Dynamic USB Microphone work with Maschine Mikro Mk3?
I would really appreciate your reply.
Thank you.
Congrats your channel is awesome
Gabe would you consider doing a stream where we can send you our tracks and get your feedback?
I too have a soft spot for small music making devices. I am very interested in this JU-06A but do to that pesky thing called a budget, I am having to weigh that against some other things I want. Your thoughts would be appreciated. I already have a Circuit Tracks, a Roland MC-101, and a VerseLab MV-1 (mostly due to watching your videos. LOL) but am considering a Circuit Rhythm, but also want a Roland JU-06A and/or a Roland JD-08 and either a Novation MiniNova, a Roland JD-XI, or an Arturia Microfreak. For now, I need to pick two of those. Ooh, also considering a Korg Minilogue, but would have to find a used one to keep in budget.
Helo Gabe
is it possible to record chords on the fly onto the sequencer?
I love that Roland does this, but some of the prices feel a bit steep for a small, boutique remake. The 808 And 303 prices are crazy. They are taking advantage of nostalgia
Fair enough, they definitely are. I don't see a whole lot of a point to the drum machine ones tbh, but they got me with the Juno sounds.
YeaH !!!!!!😅😊10.00 🕥 ❤ Now Thats
SynthWave 😊😊jaffa Jenkins jams
I refrained myself from getting a roland boutique, because they are just to collectable
Smart move. I bought one and now I have six.
I wish I'd bought the original JU-06 instead of the JP-08. I actually like the cute faders (just use a finger pinch instead of a wrist waggle) but sonically it rarely inspires me. However the JU-06A looks interesting.
Can you power it with a wall socket USB phone charger or can it only be via a pc?
Is the output a mini jack? Yea that’s disappointing I will need to order a mini jack to fill size jack plug. Thank you for mentioning that. As I wouldn’t have been able to use it straight away if I hadn’t known that.
Hi Gabe, nice work! Do you know how to stop the Ju-06a sequencer auto starting when in sync and pressing play in the Circuit Tracks?
Tbh I just erase the contents of the sequencer and it works fine.
The only thing I wish the would have changed: Look at all that black space between the sliders and the red graphic up top... they could have used that real-estate to give more play in the sliders... that was my problem when i owned the jupiter version of this and why I ultimately sold it... it's really tough to make small changes. The sliders are bigger on this, because the jupiter just had way more going on, and therefore even smaller sliders... but still. Wish they had used that extra room up top. Oh well.
Nice jams!!
Question: does the mc 101 share the same synth engine as the juno?
No it's a different engine. The computer version of the Zencore engine has a Juno emulator expansion, and there are some oscillators and filters that are meant to be pretty similar, but it's not a 1:1 recreation.
@@GabeMillerMusic ooh ok thanks for your reply!
That‘s my travel setup (Circuit Tracks + JU06) love it :) Annoying though, that the stand (which is great) needs to be bought separately for too much money.
Nice, that's perfect for portability!
I got a couple questions, hope someone can help me out:
1- can I plug this to a midi keyboard?
2- can I plug it to guitar pedals?
Please make the video with the Microcosm. That'd be exactly what I do if I get one of these!
I filmed exactly that the other day, it'll be out in a week or two!
@@GabeMillerMusic Sweet deal, looking forward to it! Subbed for the mean time :D
If it had more polyphony, I had bought one of these the minute they came out. But only 4 voices is imho ridiculous for a digital synth.
But great video, though!
That's where the Behringer Deepmind 12/12D comes into play, that thing sounds amazing and the value is there as well. It is sort of a Juno clone, but not really and still its own thing, with 12 voices and some extras tossed in there, and it is really tempting me. I actually considered the JU-06A, but the Deepmind has swayed me.
@@devilbonerhard to beat the Deepmind really, this thing is more portable with batteries but the Deepmind is the true successor of the Juno.
is most of the JU 06a included in MC-101's Zen-core? would it be redundant having both?
The whole synth engine isn't, but as far as I know it does replicate a few select oscillators and filters. Depending on how close you want to get, that might be enough
I want this so bad, but I can't pull the trigger with it just having 4 voices. I think I'm going to get the JX-08 because it has 20 voices and the ability to combine 2 voices in dual function, buuuut.......maaaan this one just sounds SO good. I'm completely torn!!
Me too ... I think I will go with this baby, the sound is the most important thing for me, JX - 08 has great features, but it's sounds too cold to me ... 4 voices are enough if you need this in a mix and you're using audio tracks ...
@@HornetBojan That's a good choice. When I made this comment 3 months ago, I hadn't yet made my decision. But shortly after, I ended up getting the JX, and quickly returning it for reasons you mentioned above. The sound was too cold, too muddy, too dull....just wasn't warm and vibrant enough and for some reason the resolution seemed very low quality in comparison to other plugins, vsts, and digital synths I've used. I am still interested in the Juno 06a, but I am skeptikal due to my experience with the JX. This video still gives me the curiosity enough to entertain the potential buy though. We will see. Comment back if you end up getting the 06a and let me know how you think it sounds
