About 11 years ago I was helping a friend on my course at film school and we went to visit an eccentric guy in the middle of the Shropshire English countryside who had his hand in about everything conceivable. In one corner of his grounds surrounded by over growth stood a black Mercedes’ 500E. It was armour plated as it used to belong to the President of Egypt. “You can have it if you get transport,” he said. I kick myself now, as at that time organising that was beyond my means. But my god that would have been a steal!
Usually the antenna breaks because they dry out causing the plastic gear strip to break. You can purchase a replacement kit online. Also make sure you lube the antenna when it's installed so it doesn't break again I also recommend painting the grille black once you find one, it makes the car look 10 years younger and freshens the front end nicely. Also don't forget to purchase the antenna grommet that goes between that black cover and the quarter panel. One day I'll own one of these!

I own a 1994 Mercedes E280 with 472,000 kilometers on it & it runs like a Swiss watch. Has every option known to man at the time & more & the car is bullet proof. I paid $2,000 AUD here in Australia this year, 2020 & it is an absolute joy to drive. The Saffron Java leather trim is absolutely gorgeous. It is possibly the best Mercedes mid class model they ever built!
Thank you hoovie! I miss all the old Mercedes you do, that is how I found you years ago. Please keep them up, maybe a 190e 2.3-16v in the future would make my day! My first car was a 190e and ive been hooked on the old benz since.

As an owner of 95' W140 500SE, I can say that "mercedes quality" is not a myth, these cars were built extremely tough and being maintained properly - may last for decades (which mine actually does). But the problem with sport sedans like 500E is quite simple - they've been worn out by their owners reaaaaally badly. Poor maintenance, lack of respect to aged vehicles, cheap parts - these are constant satellites of cheap owners of classic cars. And looking at your 500E, I may suggest this situation is a pretty common thing even worldwide, not only in 3d world countries like mine. But nevertheless, I still consider old merces from the 90's as the most "mercedesish" Benz cars of all time. Because they combine relatively "modern" technologies, nice look and very nice performance with reliability, which allows you to drive them daily without any significant issues. Cheers!
Been there. Many many cars in 60s and early 70s were shadetree mechanic workable. After that, the complexity grew, and didn’t stop growing. This is where a shade tree mechanic goes back to get the connector that goes with the replacement antenna and splices it onto the wiring harness of the car. Heck if it's the same type of connector in general, you might be able to switch the existing pins into the shell for the new antenna.
*You could successfully do a pinout change and I know I could. Hope I'm wrong, but not sure any of that fine-grain stuff is within Tyler's skill set. Cheers!*

Then you can solder the wires and shrink wrap the wires together, red to red, black to black, etc. You CAN DO IT! or you can have the Wizard do it for you, but totally possible/fixable
The belief in "German Engineering" is simply something peddled to fools who are susceptible to marketing campaigns. Those of us who've actually spent time paying the bills to keep Benz or BMW products on the road are less starry eyed about the whole thing. They are wildly over-designed, needlessly complex vehicles. That they are less reliable when there are 5 times more things that can potentially go wrong is simply Murphy's Law in action. It's common sense. Nobody should be surprised. Somehow though...Lexus products seem to hold together.
@@RealityIsTheNow not really, most "German cars" in America are built in America. Not by Germans. BMW, Mercedes and Audi have factories in America. The German cars built in Germany are actually generally reliable, and hence most Europeans prefer German cars. In fact, our most unreliable German car we personally owned (our BMW X5) we found out was built in America, go figure. Also, the general public don't maintain their cars properly, and people in Germany meticulously take care of their cars, which by in turn makes them break down much less often. If you're in America though, I'd generally avoid German cars. Unless you get yourself one that you *know* is made in Germany, also, sourcing parts in America is a lot more expensive
@@PrinceofSchwerin Actually, no, that is completely untrue. I'm speaking as someone who's been a fan of MB for many years. The vast majority of MB models for example are made in Germany. My E320 was made in Germany. The first transmission was covered under warranty. The second one was not. So was the old E300, I traded in on it. They were both extremely problematic cars. I've got a 2005 E320 CDI that has been excellent in terms of powertrain...and a real mess in terms of the ridiculous amount of electronics and sensors all over the rest of the car. The passenger seat cannot seam to decide if there is anyone sitting in it here lately...and makes and annoying sound that cannot be shut off except by buckling the belt on an empty seat. I've put nearly 150k miles on the CDI over the last 10 years, and it has been in the shop about a dozen times. The MB models assembled in the US are mostly the SUV's. NOT THAT IT MATTERS where it was assembled. If you honestly believe that imaginary lines on a map make up for engineering failures, then you should probably give up now lol. The reason Europeans think German cars are reliable is because they are comparing them to something like a Fiat or a Peugeot...which is frankly a joke of a car...and obviously German is better than that. ANYTHING is better than _that._ The real reliability comes from Japan. My wife has been driving our Lexus LS430 for going on 20 years now...and it has never, not once, broken down in any way. I'm not exaggerating when I say its been perfect. On that note, my 2002 Ford pickup has been nearly flawless in terms of reliability as well, though it's only got 130k miles on it, as it mostly gets used to haul things around.
@@RealityIsTheNow It is not about "imaginary lines". The work ethic and sheer class of education and attention to detail is something Germans take a lot of pride in and are fantastically good at. I come from England and study in Germany, and honestly, I can say, the uni education here (I study Maths) makes every other country's look like a joke in comparison (Japan, Russia, China have similar levels of Engineering and Maths, hence you'll also find Japanese cars good). You can even take it down to simply primary and secondary education. People who'd come for exchange in England/America from Germany would say everything they did in our syllabus in Science and Maths they did back home 3-4 years ago, and I *know* the American education system is even worse than the British one. Calculus is compulsory in middle school in Europe, Optional in American High school and English High school, for an example. Ironically, Calculus is compulsory for British run international schools, which I find pretty hilarious. This is just an example. Ironically, the 2 countries with an incredibly good work ethic (Japan/Germany) also produce the best cars. And ultimately, luxury comes at a cost of some sort of reliability, having air conditioning in your car means it can fail, having a rear-view camera means it can also fail, having electrically adjustable seats mean it can also fail, doesn't mean you can't continue driving the car when those things fail. The Germans don't do very good electrics, the Japanese do that best, but most of their cars are mechanically sound and Japanese cars aren't *generally* anywhere near as luxurious as their German counterparts (less features, lower power engine etc). That being said, most companies nowadays figured out that having cars that last 20+ years isn't good for business, so most companies will have a couple parts in their cars basically "rigged to bust" (plastic manifolds, etc). If you spend enough time in forums, you'll know which parts to exchange for an aftermarket part, and you're set.
RealityIsTheNow I disagree with that. Sure It can get expensive if you only get repairs and maintenance through the dealerships. Mercedes are designed to be worked on. The quality and engineering far exceeds most other brands. Most older benzs will outlive cheap, chinsy disposable American cars
Apart from the Opel GTs, I found the Volvo P1800/1800S, Sunbeam Alpine, and the 928 which were not mentioned, and far more interesting than BMW 3 Series among others. For the electric aerial just go along to your motor factors and buy a replacement male/female plug and replace. Worked for me when I was doing some wiring on my car.
When I bought my first car (86 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham) the passenger air vent was cracked and pushed in. 16 year old me ripped the whole thing out, then went to the junk yard, ripped out another one from a 91 or 92 Brougham, then superglued the new vent in place. Fun times indeed
I’ve found with Mercedes they are really good at stocking parts, I can still get things like the climate control module and interior trim pieces of the right color, suspension parts etc etc, if you can’t find something, try the dealer, you’ll pay a ton but they can usually get you the part.
I'll sell you my 2010 Avensis diesel. Nobody in the US will have one, let alone know what it is. It may not suit you though, it's ultra reliable, but very, very bland.
@@DeefBass Japan had a version called the Toyota Sai that I think looks better than both , why ever Toyota didn't use its hydrid tech in europe is beyond me
Car looks amazing and culturally you are a hero for saving it! Here in Germany the value of these are skyrocketing day by day so if you'd export it, you would definitely make a decent profit - anyhow you should definitely put a set of euro headlights on it, they just look so much cleaner!
What I've learned from this channel. If i buy anything I want - either buy CPO or expect to budget the buy price in mechanic costs to make it a reliable driver. Lesson learned thank you
Back in the day as a kid in the late 80s and early 90s I always was fascinated with Mercedes & Jaguars having the one arm windshield wiper. I think they should come back out with those. Although I have read there were complications with those type of design wipers
Probably the V8 from the 500E have more torque than the transmission and rear diff can held. That’s in case they are the same as in the 400 and 300 engines.
The transmissions used in the cars were slightly adapted for each respective engine, so the transmission used for the 5.0L in the 500E would have been modified to handle the extra torque compared to the 4.2L V8 used in the 400E/E420. As for differentials there are a handful of different ratios and I think two or three ring gear sizes. The diff in the 500E I think was unique to it, 210mm with 2.82 ratio and ASR, though some 400E/E420s had ASR as well. Either way, anything that needed to be changed to handle the more powerful engine was changed.
One thing you seem to miss is the feeling of opening/closing the doors/compartments etc. Not many other brands put that amount of effort and your old car seems to still have a bunch left of that touch. =)
The Camaro hasn't run in a decade at least, I bet he just had it taken straight to the Wizard. You'll see a video open with a Camaro burnout on the old tires before putting new ones on.
When you told us what you were planning to pull, and didn't seem to have any tools (or experience), I knew where this was headed. I use either four small screwdrivers or four bike spokes to lift the inner clips on those vents. Also, there's a maddening number of power antenna variations used throughout the 124 production run.
I love my 97 E class AMG. I have close to 250k on mine and it is running perfect, just passed smog with flying colors! Thanks for sharing this with us! You have a nice car there! An American talking about German engineering! Man the w124 is an over engineered car and it's admitted by mercedes, these car almost never break down, they rarely have issues, but if u treat it like Americans treat their cheap cars it will eventually break down
I can't stand junkyards who store cars like that... Anyway, there are so many gems in there that will rot away without anyone actually being able to use the parts.

Oh I wish I could afford to fix my 1996 Geo Metro , it needs some engine and body/ paint work. I’ve never put a dent in it and it’s been others who have put the two dents in it and one cylinder is getting a little oil in it but it runs surprisingly good. It’s been in my family since my sister purchased it new. It really has potential and it really deserves better then I can afford. I enjoy your Chanel sir so thank you. A perfect example of low mileage being bad for a car. The last W124 I was in was a taxi in Lisbon with 650,000km on the clock. Owner was about 70 and had had it from new and it was original. Regular fluid changes were key to its long life
Growing up in the 90's during the street pharmaceutical era, these benzes were the pinnacle for any hustler that was making any real money. Definitely still one of my all time favorites!
For choosing parts from scrap yard or buying from internet, first use car`s service manual and part manual to see what different parts they have in different years, what is differences between them and what they looks like. then look for exact model year part.

I was totally expecting the camera to pan to the Camaro at the end of this video
That Z28 looking mint made me smile.
I like the rug. It really ties the room together.
These are 30 grand €€€ and up in Germany now, I think your car was still a good deal. ✌️
hit me up, I've got a near perfect one I've been talking to my German car guy about shipping it over there to sell
I’ve found with Mercedes they are really good at stocking parts, I can still get things like the climate control module and interior trim pieces of the right color, suspension parts etc etc, if you can’t find something, try the dealer, you’ll pay a ton but they can usually get you the part.
Not sure how Tyler doesn't have a million subs yet, his content is far better than other "car" youtubers. Keep up the good work Hoovie :)
He has 1.5M now!

@@sethmoyer Quite right, good catch
I'll sell you my 2010 Avensis diesel. Nobody in the US will have one, let alone know what it is. It may not suit you though, it's ultra reliable, but very, very bland.
America does have a version of the Avensis T270 known as the Lexus HS which is a rare car on its own
@@HMoyn215 I didn't know that. I actually think the Avensis looks better. Which is weird to say.
Hope hoovie buys this!
*Looks aside, E-code headlights for any marque provide a major improvement in one's ability to SEE. Cheers!*
The Camaro is Calling Your Name Hoovie!! Can't you hear it.. " Take Me HOoome HOOOVie!!" Just sayin...
@Aamir Tanveer when I first watched this vid I knew he was gonna take it as soon as he saw it😂
these 500E's sell for $35000 to $55000 - you did good shaggy
2 videos in 1 week...keep it up mate
That 500E is one of your cars that is worth all the money you put into it. I’d keep that forever. It’s timeless.
still got the ford excursion huh, i thought i could see it through the garage window. yeah those are keepers.
dear Mr. Hoovie, it's so satisfying to watch you fixing these scrap yard cars. Keep up the good work....
Hoovie:"I just wasted a day" Me:well atleast you did something
What I've learned from this channel. If i buy anything I want - either buy CPO or expect to budget the buy price in mechanic costs to make it a reliable driver. Lesson learned thank you
Last times I was that early, Hoover was installing a v8 in a 911.

Nice to see you Tyler :)
Why is it such a challenge for car manufacturers to make high end automobiles reliable?
Thiiisssss is a junkyard, and I'm going to review its quirks and features.
Then I'm going to give it a Doug score!
Back in the day as a kid in the late 80s and early 90s I always was fascinated with Mercedes & Jaguars having the one arm windshield wiper. I think they should come back out with those. Although I have read there were complications with those type of design wipers
Funny, my '93 300e just goes and goes and goes......Your 500e just goes to The Wizard. All the parts you need are on eBay NEW.
Love my ´90 300e
My '89 300CE been going strong for the last 12 years I've owned it. Absolutely love it.
I got a 93 400E...love it!
Good ones are so expensive right now. And will only get higher. By the way, your interior looks fantastic right now. Good job.
Hoovie: Should I buy this Camero?
Me: *Palpatine voice* Do it!
One thing you seem to miss is the feeling of opening/closing the doors/compartments etc. Not many other brands put that amount of effort and your old car seems to still have a bunch left of that touch. =)
I’ve had so many days like this restoring an E50 amg....
Tyler Hoover standing in the middle of a junkyard full of cars that are just shells of there former selves: There's a lot of neat cars in here.
8:25 💀💀😂😂 "Nothing to see here" idk why this reminded me of old top gear
0:52 "Lets go over everything I've done with this car, starting with why I bought it."
The cool headlight wipers?
I love the old box Benz’s
CaptainBearPants I do too. I want to get an 05 ish e500 but dunno.
Matthew Grear the 2005 e class wasnt a box. You dont know anything about at car. I owned a 500 w211. You need glasses.
Sterling Interlocking did he say he was getting a w124 e500? No he didnt. He just said that he loves them too. Lol
Yes I’m aware it isn’t. I didn’t say it was. I was just saying i like those newer body styles and was thinking of getting one.
Thanks Lukas for having some sort of ability to read and comprehend
Actually one of the only channels that makes me crack up every time
🙂 love your work mate
I was waiting to see the z28 in his garage at the end of the video!!
Turn that Lambo around! You're driving my OCD mind crazy!
You can get kits on eBay that have the tools you need for the vents, instrument cluster, radio, etc...
Nice Stanley screwdriver, I just bought a set for my nephew who is 5
😂😂😂😂😂
I love my 97 E class AMG. I have close to 250k on mine and it is running perfect, just passed smog with flying colors! Thanks for sharing this with us! You have a nice car there! Enjoy it a little and sell it before something else breaks! LOL! Get the Camaro! That camaro is spotless! Take care and God bless you all!
More junkyard content please! Or just show how you try to work on cars, I find it quite entertaining.
MATAS SARAPOVAS agreed
You nailed it. Great episode. Don’t give up. If you go back to get that connector, get that damn vent too!!
Tyler, your Mercedes pretty clearly had gone to the executive's teenagers.
I just crossed 250,000 miles on my S550. The engine is a beast!... but I need to transmission is in need of a rebuild. Still love it!
Yeah, the eco junk harness failing is what killed my E420. Loved that car 😢
I am having that problem also :(

Next video be like: "my cheapest PT Cruiser already has some issues..."
in my country where they are very rare even here they dont go more than 3000 euros :)
Lol, that would just be wasting $5.
I think the later 124s (at least my 1995 A124) have the cellphone antenna built in hence the difference in the antenna connectors.
Truth. You don’t happen to have a spare for my ‘94 E420?

Our C124 is in for sub frame mounts, springs, plating, donuts...however it runs and ticks over nicely
I mean this in a nice way: You're the Sisyphus of automotive youtubers
An American talking about German engineering! Man the w124 is an over engineered car and it's admitted by mercedes, these car almost never break down, they rarely have issues, but if u treat it like Americans treat their cheap cars it will eventually break down
I can't stand junkyards who store cars like that... Anyway, there are so many gems in there that will rot away without anyone actually being able to use the parts.
Pretty much most places store them like this
@@silverstorm6973 I got a place nearby that has huge shelves for all of the cars, and they take most of the important pieces off the cars before leving them outside. They are very organised.
Between my ex-wife needing 1/3 of my income and taking care of my kids I’m lucky I can eat. Again I truly enjoy your shows sir.
12:59 Dude you just hit the piece you are having removed.........
Yup! That old plastic he just said can break easily!
A perfect example of low mileage being bad for a car. The last W124 I was in was a taxi in Lisbon with 650,000km on the clock. Owner was about 70 and had had it from new and it was original. Regular fluid changes were key to its long life
No video on the sweet outrun arcade cabinets back there?
Growing up in the 90's during the street pharmaceutical era, these benzes were the pinnacle for any hustler that was making any real money. Definitely still one of my all time favorites!
Big fan! Keep on rock’n on...
For choosing parts from scrap yard or buying from internet, first use car`s service manual and part manual to see what different parts they have in different years, what is differences between them and what they looks like. then look for exact model year part.
