Another GREAT vlog guys!!! Personal space? Those markets are notorious for an inch and hour. I haven't been to one in a long long time, especially one in open air like that. Usually, I just go peruse through tiny ones in the mall. Oh yeah!!! The insects and arachnids are a delicacy of a niche group of the population in the north and northeast. They are not common food for the general population. Also, the ball crushed into a bowl and other garnishing added was actually "Lab". Thai Isaan salad made dry and formed into a ball for easy keeping, until it is used. Lab has many fermented elements in them from rice to pork, fish, shrimp, etc..

@@ChovyTravel well the WEF and powers that be thinks the plebs are not good enough to have our regular food and wanna transition the masses, your children's children, to eating insects. "You will own nothing and be happy", "You will EAT ZEE BUGS" (In faux German bureaucrat accent) they claim. Soon enough, eating pork, chicken, beef like we currently do will be luxuries, reserved ONLY for the rich, moneyed people. I pray Thailand remains Thailand (and independent and sovereign from foreign powers and influences), and doesn't go that route, and fall prey to western meddling. Good thing, as far as I know, Thailand is self sufficient in food production.

The crushed ball in the bowl was not 'Laab' or 'Larb Tod' as you've explained. Laab Tod is always eat individually with sticky rice or plain rice, never usually mix to other ingredients.
      .
The grown up Thai people 90% knows it is 'Yum Naem Klook' or 'Yum Naem Khao Tod', I'm not sure it is Northen or NorthEastern or even maybe Central local food. The fried seasoned rice was made into a ball. This plate consists of crushed rice ball, Naem (fermented pork - the main sour-salty tastes), peanuts, sliced pork skin, sliced ginger, chopped green onions and shallots, dried chillies mixed together, serving with 'Bai Cha Plu' (the heartshaped betel leaves) or lettuces.
      .
Welcome to Thailand, foodie paradise destination.

In the past, this kind of event was called a "temple fair". There were many food stalls and amusement park rides. In the old style, there would be a show similar to a circus. There were strange shows similar to those in the US. You might know them as Siamese twins or Chang Bunker and Eng Bunker. In Thailand, there is a unique show in this kind of event called "Mia Ngu". It is a woman who is the wife of a snake or a person who has the upper half of a person but the lower half of a snake. Of course, it is just a show. And there is a car climbing a tank. Which is hard to see nowadays. Usually organized at the temple as a merit-making event.

Fried insects are not a normal food for Thai people. Some people eat insects as a snack. It is mostly found in the North and Northeast. Because in the past, the Northeast of Thailand was still dry. There were not as many sources of protein as there are today. It is estimated that the frying of insects started in the 1980s when there was an outbreak of grasshoppers in Thailand. Therefore, various methods of getting rid of them began. Frying them to eat was one of the most successful methods. After that, other types of insects were also fried. And it was during this time that Thailand had a policy to create tourism. When tourists began to come in large numbers and saw this type of food, it became more talked about among tourists. As a result, more and more people started making it a profession. This is not a food that the average Thai eats. Part of it is for tourism. Only a few Thais like to eat it. And only fried grasshoppers and bamboo worms, which are small and slender, which we call “express trains,” are the most popular.

The peanut dessert you eat at Sweet fish shop. Thai people call it Krayasat. It is an auspicious dessert. This dessert is made from peanuts, sesame, sugar, roasted rice. It is popularly made and eaten at auspicious events. It is an ancient dessert. What makes it special is that it is a dessert for Thai traditional merit-making. It can be said that it is a dessert with its own traditions and dates. In September, according to the normal calendar, villagers will make this dessert to make merit for their deceased relatives, which has become the Sat Thai tradition. Or called Sat Month Ten. Krayasat is a symbol of abundant agricultural products. It is also a merit-making ceremony for the rice in the fields, which is the first harvest.😊

Each of the ancient sweets you try is probably something that people ate regularly more than 100 years ago.
Fun fact: After October, there are many festivals throughout the country and in every province, big and small, according to each temple. These events originate from Buddhist ceremonies. During the end of Buddhist Lent, there is the Kathin ceremony. Buddhists will offer robes to monks and other items, including donations in the past. Nowadays, temples earn money for the temple as a business by organizing these events, allowing vendors to rent space to sell their products, or there may be stage plays, concerts, and various rides in amusement parks, depending on the reputation of the temple. If you have ever seen the royal procession, it is the same Kathin ceremony, but it is an event in the palace style.

Wow! That festival used to be right in front of my old house! I used to walk with my parents every evening 🤣🤣🤣 and when we went back we just exhausted. And we go again the next day.🤣🤣🤣 I literally grew up with it (I live there almost 25 years and now I move to about 15 kilometres away🤣🤣🤣). This event causes a really bad traffic jam every year! If you really walk from the beginning till the end your feet would swollen! 😆😆

As a Thai. I don't eat fried bugs on a regular. It's something I only do when I seriously craved it and I don't like all the bugs. I only like grasshoppers, crickets and silk worms, anything else made me yuck. Now that I mentioned it, haven't been eating them for years. I moved to the countryside a decade ago and no one here sell them.

I'm worry about the way you poke the food stick in your mouth. There are a lot of people around that might hit you by chance and that will cause a nasty injure. If you like to have the food on stick, please take it by side, bite it and slide the stick from one side to the other.

17:41 I believe is some sort of sour pork dish called Naam แหน มหมู or fermented pork sausage They also sell it in the Laos and Vietnamese stores in USA. The thing with eating naam is you're gonna be burping up sourness for the next few hours as your stomach is trying to digest it. I haven't had naam in a long time though, like since I was a kid. The article I saw on it says "In addition, naem is a raw food and may contain parasites and bacteria. It should be cooked before consuming. If left at room temperature, it will keep for about 1 week, but if left in the refrigerator, it will keep for about 1 month". Ya, I had heard before naam is rather raw (and it even LOOKS raw to me too), so be careful if you choose to eat it, it's kinda a gamble like when you decide to eat raw oysters or sushi with raw fish and such. That's probably why I hadn't had it since I was a kid - I remember it being too rather raw for my taste.

    • @ChovyTravel

Thai Thai don’t eat insect but people from Iran ( northeast) they eat as a snack when they drink just think is a home make peanut but scorpion and the one with lot of lags are just for tourists. Sour salad call “yum nam”. I think Nam from Vietnam Thai make in to our own test Vietnam are more on a sweet side with little sour with a lot of pork skin but Thai like make it no sweet more sour and less pork skin also another one call ”yum kow nam” I like this one more. They make rice to a rice ball with nam fried it and make just like the one you ate but instead of nam sausage they use a nam rice ball. “Nam”been going around the region before country has a border every county has their own signature. But I think original is Vietnam course of the name.
