    I love that theory
Of him, in a fit of anger, killing his wife with the sword
Then, unable to really comprehend what he just did, essentially blames it on the sword. Not able to accept that he was capable of such things.
Locking it away so it can't hurt anyone.
Fully possible the Ebony Blade, isn't actually a set sword
Perhaps the mere act of such betrayal with a weapon will draw that prince's power towards it, and turn it into an Ebony blade if she takes interest.
    Sort of a self-fulfilling prophesy.
The ebony blade isn't a sword that makes you kill people.
Its a sword that was used to kill someone trusted, and has been infused with that betrayal

For anyone interested in this questline, I highly recommend the mod The Whispering Door - Quest Expansion. It gives you more options, including an approach that can end with you breaking Mephala's (or as the mod's banner amusingly calls her, "ASMR Lydia") hold on Nelkir and at least partially defusing the family drama between him and his father. There's another mod called Mephala's Curse which in addition to this causes the Ebony Blade itself to afflict you with a curse that has an increasing negative impact on you until you either succumb to its influence and kill someone who trusts you or destroy it in the lava of the Aetherium Forge, Lord of the Rings style. It's pretty cool.

The thing I find fascinating about the Whispering Door quest is that considering what exactly that Daedra is the Prince of, she could possibly have very well lied about him having a different mother.
Also, I absolutely despise that this is one of those quests that doesn’t have a different option. Sure you can just ignore it, but that also just feels so empty. They could have easily had it so there was something else we could have done, but nope, just take the sword, and forget about Jarl’s broken relationship with his son that was genuinely the most interesting part of the quest.

    • @ntolman
      @ntolman 6 місяців тому +27

@@Wolf_DominicIt's a good plan. The books belong to another Daedric Prince. They aren't prone to cooperation and Hermaeus Mora won't give it back without Mephala paying a high price. The Daedric Princes are beginning to war against each other, which is causing havoc on Tamriel as it's often used as the battleground for their disputes. The thing about Mephala is, she only speaks truths... Albeit the truths she speaks are venomous in nature, meant to corrupt those who are willing to listen. This is esoecially the case with Jarl Balgruuf with the whole issue around his children and his relationship with them, as well as the potential idea that he himself had used the Ebony Blade himself. That would give him more of a connection to Mephala, and in that she would have had a more intimate connection with him. She would know everything about him, especially the deepest, darkest side of him... That is, up until the point where her blade was placed in that room, and it being "sealed". She knew of his infidelity. She knew every little deep, dark secret he had kept hidden for so long.

A small but notable detail regarding Dragonsreach not mentioned in this video is the skeleton permanently floating in the water under the bridge to the castle.

They don't technically have a physical form and can appear however they wish yeah, it gets even more complicated when you learn about their connection to their realms. For other daedra creating a realm of Oblivion requires a lot of them and it's hard work, but a Prince's realm can effortlessly shift to their slightest whim to the point where their realm may very well be a part of them as much as the shape they choose to assume when dealing with mortals.

I suspect that when referring to a "Daedric Prince" the word is used in the older meaning, that of a ruler, monarch, a souvereign, etc. Of course, the word was most commonly applied to males, but it wasn't actually a gender specific word, and so has been used historically about female rulers.

I have an idea that might make some sense as to why Balgruff and Farengar don't react to you holding the blade. It's a part of the same magic involved when killing someone with the blade: others who don't wield it don't recognize it when seen unless they wield it themselves. It could explain why the Skyforge is mentioned, someone must've plunged the blade into the forge before locking it up at the request of the Jarl and Farengar. And it's not like no one can see what you're wearing or have equipped such as destruction spells and such. The fact no one calls you out speaks loudly.

I think the biggest lie is that Nelkir has a different mother. In my head cannon Balgruff used to wield the ebony blade as a gift from his housecarl from her time as a Mephala worshiper, the Jarl's father bedded Balgruff's wife producing Balgruff's half brother Nelkir and Balgruff slew his own wife and father with the ebony blade and passes his brother as his son. This way the scandal is seedier but Balgruff still seems a decent fellow by medieval standards. I think Mephala influenced the affair to happen as a way of getting a normally honorable man to commit uxoricide and patricide. Loved the video btw.

I thought the same as you, except that the boy hasn't "the same mother". So it could be more like Edipo's story, in order to have nelkir brother of Balgruf... And maybe that's the motivation of the cutting down of the quest.

I remember back in the PS3 days this was the most cursed quest in all of Skyrim. And that's a pretty damn bold statement to make when it comes to the PS3 version of Skyrim! Pretty much every stage of it had a very high chance of corrupting the PS3 save file and rendering that file completely unplayable. It was advised to turn off all autosaves and instead make separate hard saves before finishing and starting each stage of the quest. It was also notoriously bugged, often being impossible to complete or even begin in some cases. Bethesda being Bethesda, they probably left the quest in such an unstable state after cutting it back so much and of course they just left it in the game in that condition, never to be fixed. PS3 Skyrim days were very dark days!

Hmm I like the idea that
Legal wife becomes aware of secret affair, kills woman (or had her murdered - maybe the body under bridge).
Balgruuf becomes despondent and Iraleth decides to take she has to take out the wife (she would be trusted by the wife and Balgruuf, lending to the story behind the blade)
Or Balgruuf grows mad with grief and uses the blade, and murders the wife, Iraleth has to take the blade from him and explain to him the lore behind it.
    ×××
Or Nelkir DOES have the same mother but Mephala uses some idea or obscure fact to make it SEEM like he doesn't. The info might technically be true but being a kid, the first idea to him would seem likeliest. (E.g. something about him is different, or perhaps he thinks he's being treated different and one possible explanation is that it's because he's "in a position that doesn't afford him equal treatment" aka a bastard child - so he runs with the idea even if it's NOT true, it just makes enough sense to SEEM true)
This way Mephala has told no lies but thoroughly cloaked the family in deceit and treachery

Again, all of these topics, from this one to his latest TES video have been covered YEARS ago, and I’ve been watching these kinds of channels on said topics for years, there’s nothing Fizhy can upload lore wise I haven’t heard from others.
I guess stay for the character or voice but it feels unproductive for me.

I think i’ve come up with a theory of my own thats is probably a bit of a reach but I couldn’t help but comment here. I don’t expect anyone to read this whole thing but if you do, I appreciate it:
I believe before our story of Dragonborn began, that Balgruuf allowed his children to explore and make friends in the other districts of Whiterun. But once dragons came back and Alduin’s threat was proven, he forced his children back into Dragonsreach where they had no choice but to venture out to different areas that they wouldn’t normally seek. And maybe out of retaliation and feeling bitter that his dad doesn’t let them see his friends anymore (like irl children are known to do), Nelkir decides to continue to talk to Mephala and eventually learn these “secrets.”
My guess is that Balgruuf had a wife that was the mother to Dagny and Frothar and sometime after they were born she died from an unprecedented illness. And afterwards, Balgruuf chooses to cope with his grief in self-destructive ways: heavy drinking, engaging with promiscuous women, etc.
And one of those women ends up bearing Nelkir, which he doesn’t want. Fast forward to him discovering the Ebony Blade while he’s still in a downward spiral from the passing of his wife, his denial of his own bastard child, and dealing with the many duties and stresses of being a Jarl and he kills his “mistress” with the Blade. One could argue that he killed her to keep the word from spreading around town that he got a non-noble woman pregnant.
That’s my whole take on it atleast.
I love all the other theories that other have discussed and I really wish this quest didn’t get cut short.
Especially with how we get no further closure on Balgruuf and his children.
Maybe even a few dialogue options where Balgruuf himself or Farengar reveal that they’re not surprised atleast one of the children discovered the basement since they’re all bored from not being able to hang outside of Dragonsreach anymore.

One idea I like that I'm sure would be the case if the game allowed it, you don't just stand in front of the door, your listening at the keyhole, and mephala is actually whispering through. I also very much like the implication of how she presents herself to the dragonborn. I imagine she can manifest Behind The Door. I don't in that room, or any room, I mean the space that exists behind any door to an empty room

Wonderful video and theory, For as many times as Bethesda made patches just to break mods or rereleased Skyrim entirely they could have gone back and actually finished some of their unfinished quests in the past decade and a half. "We needed more time" Yes in 2010.
Edit. Also what if Irileth had the blade and used it to kill the jarl's wife because she was a threat to him. It would be a tragic betrayal. The sword would be put away and no one would speak of it again. Irileth would then have good reason to be paranoid everyone wants Balgruf dead if his own wife tried to kill him at some point.

Maybe Balgruf didn't do anything sinister with the sword himself, but Irileth, a reformed former follower of Mephala, recognized it and told him what it was capable of. Maybe Balgruf just drove away his wife, leading to her accidental death, or she minecrafted herself because she found out about his infidelity. Stuff that's bad, but not outright murder, but that's the stuff that Mephala planned, in the cut content, to use to twist the kids into killing him. So much of Balgruf's other behavior paints him as a man with a past, but a man who is honorable now, and I can't imagine he could so completely reform into the man he is now if he used to be a cold-blooded sociopath.
I also definitely think Irileth is one of the assassins she mentions, that she came to kill Balgruf, but came to respect him and became his protector.

The blade actuelly does corrupt the weilder of it, especially after prolonged use of it. In ESO (A game i have extentsively played) there is a quest in a dungeon (crypt of Hearts 1 and 2 i think) were we learn of a Elf named Nerien'eth who (with his his wife) ran a school with dedicated (if not loyal) staff and students. The quest tells us however that at some point Nerient'eth discovered the Ebony Blade and it slowly began to change him with each use. The Blade made him believe his wife and their staff were planning to betray him eventually the Blade's ingluence reached a tipping point and Nerien'eth believd that his only true allie was Mephala. This resulted in him takeing up th Ebony Blade and using it for its intended purpose and killed evreyone in the school starting with his wife

On top of the dark theory’s I have my own
Lydia was the personal housecarl of Bugrufs wife ,when she was killed by her own husband in a drunken or corrupted rage for threshing to expose his affair Lydia was prepare to avenge her lady but was subdued by the guards Wanting to keep everything hush out of guilt shame or plain desperation Bulgruff had Lydia imprisoned which is why she seemingly appears out of no where when she becomes our housecarl.
Taking the age of the children I’d say this tragedy would happen fairly recently perhaps 1 year to 6 months before the dragon born first comes to whiterun.
During the events of the early main story Lydia is still in jail but not wanting to waste a potential asset to the cities defense jarl Bulgruf releases her on the condition she take a oath of silence on the tragedy to which a honorable shield maiden like Lydia would definitely accept.
After the dragon is slain and the Dragon born named thane of whiterun Bulgruff assigns Lydia to our service which could be seen as effective banishment from court she can venture out and do good for the realm without spreading rumors or secrets about what happened.

I think the seemingly shortened nature of the quest, the various oddities never addressed around Dragonsreach, and the skeleton in the water might be connected. Who might be able to get a skeleton into the water right outside Dragonsreach unnoticed? Someone who lives there probably could. If the quest was originally meant to be more detailed like Mehrunes Razor's quest, that nearly literal skeleton in the closet would make more sense. The presence of that thing in such a place with nothing directly linked to it being the result of some of the cut content Skyrim has an unclear amount of would be an easy explanation. Maybe it was Balgruuf's wife, the other woman he was with, or some unnamed character in that story who we would have had explained if it had been more detailed.

My theory is Irileth brought the blade to Dragonsreach, and Mephala's influence with it. Mephala influenced the wife to betray Baalgruuf (maybe she cheated) leading to either divorce or possibly death (maybe involving the blade) and the Jarl maybe remarried or had another kid with a concubine out of wedlock. If remarried then perhaps the ex-wife returned to kill the new wife with the blade before dying herself. When Baalgruuf found the blade to be the source of these troubles, he locked it away oblivious to its influence still creeping through to anyone near the door.

    I have an alternative theory.
Irileth brought the blade to Skyrim when she joined Balgruuf’s court as a meme her of the Morag Tong. She and Balgruuf had a son together, Nelkir, making him more of a Breton than a Nord. Balgruuf’s wife found out about it and tried to kill Irileth who killed her in self-defense.
Faraangar was brought in to look at the sword. Irileth, bound by shame, turned over the blade and from then on kept her relationship with Balgruuf professional.
The sword was considered a corrupting influence and they tried to destroy it.

It seems another possibility is that housecarl has the blade as a servant of mephala, balgruuf cheated, mephala did her whisper work on balgruufs wife who then tried to kill balgruuf but failed, with balgruuf being forced to kill her in defense. It seems this would also explain all the relevant facts.

"Prince" is a gender-neutral title in regards to Daedra. Any title referring to them sort of has to be since they exist well outside mortal notions of gender (their respective planes of Oblivion are their truest forms). Most typically appear either masculine or feminine exclusively when communicating with mortals, but that's mostly so the mortals can easily recognize them. Boethiah bucks that trend by frequently appearing as both (sometimes simultaneously).

I wonder how he obtained the blade in the first place? They seemed ignorant or surprised by it's power, as if it's a mystery to them. I guess the daderic prince never spoke to him? He just seems like the most recent owner and didn’t have it for very long before locking it away. If he had it for a while, wouldn't Irileth be another victim of it, or would know about him carrying around the cursed blade? And their desire and effort to destroy it makes him seem more the victim, or the Frodo-like character.
A plot twist to the theory? ....his lover had it, maybe it had belonged to her previous lover/husband. Maybe she heard it whispering, exposing all the lies he told her, so she ended him and obtained it, then fled to Whiterun.
She started up an affair, and became jealous of the Jarl's wife. She either used it on her directly and the Jarl ordered her executed for her crime, or he might have heard it whispering when he was with her and felled both women in a moment of madness. Then her child was brought to Dragonsreach.
This would get all his kids to turn on him... and would cause tension between them as well, especially when they grow older because the one who is illegitimate wouldn't be considered a legitimate heir.
