*7.25.20 UPDATE: MY K&N FIPK SYSTEM IS CREATING LEAN CONDITIONS IN CLOSED LOOP (NON-WOT). I DID NOT KNOW THIS WHEN I PUBLISHED THIS VIDEO. I LEARNED THIS BY USING A VEEPEAK WIFI OBD SCANNER/DATA LOGGER AND THE CAR SCANNER PRO APP.*
SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss future episodes!
This is the complete installation of a K&N Gen 2 FIPK intake system (Part Number 57-9011) on a 1998 Lexus GS400. This car has the 1UZ-FE V8 engine. Note: the car also has exhaust.
Thanks for watching!
thank you so much i used this whole video to piece together and instal my k&n cold air intake on my gs400 . a couple days ago i went to take my whole intake off and broke a nipple piece in a hose so i decided to upgrade to this kit and it works and sounds amazing with my long tube headers !
You’re welcome. Unfortunately you’re going to want to watch the video about why I took my K&N off permanently. 🙁
Does anyone make long tube headers for this car? I also see the shorty type
Not really. There are places in AUS and NZ that do custom long tubes, but the final price shipped is crazy $$$.
Hey christian. Just finished the install on the intake. Everything fits great except i had to sand the opening a little for the MAF sensor to make it fit and i maybe got a bad a mold because the intake is angled a little coming out of the TB. i also had a clamp left over because the filter had one already. Thanks again for the great video. 👍👍
If you call K&N and send them some pics they will probably replace that tube. They seem to be pretty customer oriented. Just make sure you have all your ducks in a row when you call. They like to have you try everything possible first.
Forward Momentum thanks. Appreciate that.
Forward Momentum Hey Christian just a quick update. Spoke to K@N last week and sent them pics and followed your advice. They are sending out a new intake tube. After seeing some pics from others it looks normal that the tube bends and angles some over the radiator. So looks like i might end up with two. Great business structure from K&N. Very pleased with them so far.
Christian, Well after all the back and forth i decided to just order t he K&N fpk. I don’t have access to the tools i needed to cut up my stock airbox plus the K&N and oil catch can look for cleaner IMO under the hood. I’ll definitely watch your video for install. Thanks again for all the help. Looking forward to more videos.
Right on! LMK what you think!
Forward Momentum Definitely will!! Thanks again 👍👍
Forward Momentum hey one quick question did you polish that part to the right of the throttle body of not what did you use to clean that up or polish it? looks brand new. thanks. About to order some pipe split and heat tape. did you mount that pipe split at all or just rest it on the heat shield? thanks 👍
I used Barkeepers Friend and a brush, then microfiber towel. The split insulation is secured by a couple existing fasteners, but mostly by just pushing it on there. GL!
Forward Momentum thanks Christian. Appreciate the help.
Good video.
I have a gs 300 , 2003 with 140.000 km and its a great car.
Very confortable.
Thanks and take care with health. Only natural food. No vaccines at all.

Hey man nice video. I’m going to go check out a 2002 Lexus GS430 this weekend. Black with beige interior all stock 149k miles for $2700, might try to get em’ down to 2300-2500. What you think about it?
YouSlow if all the other used car check items are good, that’s a great deal. Go for it. Let us know if you get it.
Forward Momentum Yup will do! Thanks!
Hey everyone! I encountered the lean code with this K&N kit but I did some research and found a solution to make it work. I got it working and no lean code and it works great! Please, the guy who runs this channel I can't find a way to send you a dm on your channel. Do you have an email where I can send you a detailed write up with pictures? Or if you want, I can give you my email! The system works if you do it right! I'll outline all the steps and show you pictures of what I did and then you can make a new video and show everyone how to get it to work right!
Cheers!
How did you fix it? Im interested
@@g95t2000 i'm trying to figure out how to reach the guy but he only has instagram. I wanted to email him because I don't have any social media. I might have to sign up and post a write up with photos on clublexus. I will try to do it in the next few days!
Could you send me the fix?
@@g95t2000 I'm going to do a write up with pics and post it on clublexus on tuesday 3/12/2024. I'll come back and comment here with the link!
@@mariosolis2449 hello sir did you make the post?
Much help just bought same color red GS430
Same.
How or you liking the gs430 .I just buy a 03
Another great video
Hey Christian, what did you do about the lean condition for the time you discovered it until you installed your supercharger? Was there a way to resolve the lean condition without removing the cold air intake?
Put the stock intake system back on. 👍
@@ForwardMomentum sorry I read another comment and you replied saying there was a video explaining why. Seems like CAIs just throw this car out of wack. But I guess the CAI before your Eaton isn't giving you any issues so I wonder why so many people with CAI get vacuum codes/loss of power
I don’t have a CAI, even now. But I’m warming up to the idea. The MAF is exceptionally sensitive to change on these cars. So if you get it wrong, even a little, the fuel trims get all whacked.
@@ForwardMomentum Oh I thought I saw a CAI before your supercharger, my mistake. I wonder if the CAI size throws off the MAF sensor - introducing too much air in the first place - but then again the amount of air coming through should be the same, as that would be controlled by the engine, which has consistent, predictable air flow (over the range of RPM). Other than that, the only answer I can think of, is that all of us with CAIs did a poor job at sealing the vacuum lines that attach to the intake hose/body that the CAI attaches to.
Maybe a comparison of STFTs and LTFTs with and without a (properly sealed) CAI is in order, to root out the cause. But that sounds like a lot of troubleshooting, when one could just keep a stock intake. No short-term enjoyment in that though.
In your case, aren't you able to tune your AFR to work in the goldilocks zone regardless, to rid yourself of the lean condition that using a CAI causes?
@Mizt_Sim because it’s a hot wire MAF I believe K&N placed the location incorrectly in the tube. This, in turn, causes an adverse effect which makes the lean STFT condition and the LTFT eventually triggers a DTC; first bank 1, then both banks. In retrospect I may have been able to tune out the STFT issue using my AFC, but I didn’t know I could do so at the time. Now something is happening with my stock intake, which is causing the MAF to spike a high voltage and we’re not sure why that is. But that’s a whole different story and unrelated to your questions. In summary, it appears that one could run an aftermarket intake, but an air fuel controller for the short term fuel trims would be required; that’s just my suspicion, not fact.
Nice video
What about intake air temp ??
Its drop ?
I did not take measurements but I suspect temps would be slightly higher due to removal of ram air system.
@@ForwardMomentum so i thing the ECU will Retarding the ignition timing .,,, that due to high temp
Can you do a new video with opd to show the air intake temp vs outside temp
mazin alsaadi I will think about it. Keep in mind that ignition timing maps are “firm” in open loop (WOT) unless the knock sensor detects knock. That said, I’m talking about just a few degrees difference. If you live in a hot climate, the coolant bypass mod might be a good option for you.
Nice car good video.
Bought myself a black 2002gs300
Seems like a down grade. What were your IAT's with this? I noticed since someone removed my oem snorkel to "create a cold air intake" my IAT's are always 25F above ambient now. If you do the air density calculation thats a constant loss of about 15hp at all times when the motor is warmed up.
It was a downgrade for a DD. Peak HP was up at a high RPM, but that’s about it. See my other episode about why I ended removing the K&N FIPK.
What kind of head lights are u using looks awesome i have 2001 lexus gs 300 ?
Just the standard ones. Thank you.
Any issues with bogging down? I put a cheap Amazon intake on and my gs400 never ran right. Everyone is saying finding a used SRT intake with the ecu chip.....thanks for the input
Kevin Washington no bogging but I keep getting a CEL for Bank 1 lean in hot weather so it needs a tune. I have a wideband and Apexi NEO going in. I’ll cover that in a few weeks.
@@ForwardMomentum im getting same lean code were can get a tune?
Tony Tonez you can do it yourself, but I don’t think it’s the cause. Get a Veepeak OBD WiFi scanner and the Car Scanner Pro app and let’s run some diagnostics.
Tony Tonez it was the K&N intake! Put the stock system on!
@@ForwardMomentum yes it was after installed the k&n intake like u
Be careful using MAF Sensor cleaner on that style MAF. Some of the cleaners damaged that style sensor.
Thanks. Been using it for years with no issues. But I appreciate the heads up.
Hello FM want ask you about the injectors if there are more performance on other injectors rather then denso stock which could be fit on GS400?
No, no performance gains with larger injectors unless someone has forced induction. Even then the stock injectors can keep up with low boost. Remember, larger injectors won’t run in the car correctly without a controller either. Stock is king for most applications.
@@ForwardMomentum I have controller on my car UNICHIP which im using it now to tune my car , so will it be good when i add more performance injectors than the stock!
Damn i just bought the k&n intake should i still put it on? Im seeing these comments and now im second guessing.
I would not chance it. I battled it for 2 years. So annoying.
Forward Momentum Ok thank you.
Wow so don't put this system on your GS400 is basically what your saying? @@ForwardMomentum
Unless you install an AFC and can tune to AFRs and STFTs, it’s a waste. By the time you buy this intake and install an AFR and AFC and get a scan tool that reads STFTs, you’re at a grand.
Dear FM is there any Throttle body bigger than stock which fits on gs400 ? I can tune it by chip i already fixed on it
I’m not aware of a plug n play option. I believe boring the existing one is the only option. Remember, the ACIS negates any TB benefits because that assembly remains the same size. To get any good gains, you would have to bore the TB, hone the intake manifold (both sets of runners) and port and polish the heads.
@@ForwardMomentum need to try that soon hope i get some HP
@@falblushi6701 You could do a Toyota Tundra intake manifold swap but that's a boat load of work.
where do you get another one of those gaskets for the MAF?
Call K&N; they will well you one directly.
I need help please I have a Lexus GS 430 2002 with a squeaky rear suspension I bought the lower control bushings hopefully it’s that thanks.
Hi - what do you need help with?
Forward Momentum I been having squeaking rear suspension noise don’t know if is rubber or metal rubbing each other, don’t know if you have experience this with your Gs, most of them have this famous noise
My experience with squeaking has almost always been lack of grease on the sway bar bushings. If you can safely put your head near the noise and have someone push up and down on the back rapidly, you can probably narrow it down.
Forward Momentum I already greased every thing but the noise still there Thank I’m going to change the lower control arm bushing the one from the knuckle it might be the culprit thank you for replying.
Bro i installed same kit and my gs400 seems 2 not like it bogs down in the lower range when i fully step on it also getting lean code
Go through every connection very carefully. Make sure no air is entering the system post MAF. Put thread tape on that post-MAF PCV connection. Let’s take it from there.
I want to add one to my gs but Cali 😅 can't even pass a smog noe
Don’t do it. See my updated episode here: ua-cam.com/video/-79iEVKo2JA/v-deo.html
Did the intake come with all three hoses to go to the engine
Yes. See my other vid on why I went back to stock.
@@ForwardMomentum It runs lean that why correct
@@xxic3kingxx356 correct, in closed loop.
@@ForwardMomentum unfortunate such a nice model intake also for it to run lean
Is there a difference doin this with a gs430(03)
I would stick with the stock system personally.
What type of tune would you get if you got headers?
Are you thinking after market ecu?
UNDER FUNDED GARAGE leaning towards Apexi NEO with Boomslang harness. I’ll keep you posted. Note that will only deal with air/fuel and not timing, which is fine for me.
@@ForwardMomentum that's what I was looking into as well. Not alot of options for us v8 gs guys.
I'm pretty sure I blew a head gasket on my gs so I'm searching now for a new used motor and found some nice low mileage ones. I'm looking at a 120k mile one for 1000.00.
I'm thinking of getting headers too but the price is so extreme. But with the motor out already I'm probably gonna do it. So if I get the headers I'll get the neo too.
UNDER FUNDED GARAGE sorry to hear about your HG. Bummer. You’re correct, that would be the time to do the headers! Might be a good episode to do...how to pull the motor, headers, NEO...months of content right there!
UNDER FUNDED GARAGE just got a response from Boomslang. They can build an ECU to NEO harness for $500 with a 5-day lead time. With the cost of a used NEO I’m looking at $800. Ugh! Nothing is cheap anymore!
@@ForwardMomentum ugh. Never is with the v8 lexus power plant. I seen a set of cams and valve train.
Bro would u sell your stock intake? I need that for Ca smog.
Rohland Moland thx for asking. I need to keep it so I can put it back to stock when I get my ISF. :)
@@ForwardMomentum hmm ISF u say🤔, sounds dope man cant wait to see ISF content. Meanwhile Keep the gs stuff coming. 👍🏾💯
Rohland Moland it won’t be anytime soon. I need to hit 1million subs first, lol.
Where you located?
I have a gs430 intake you can borrow for smog.
@@UNDERFUNDEDGARAGE damn fr bro how nice of u, I'm in the bay area
I custom built one for mine back in 98 when I worked st RS Akimoto, anyone remember them?
I remember! 👍
Will that intake fit a ls400?
Highly doubt it. Otherwise K&N would have marketed it as such. Would probably require major modifications.
IIDRIVE OR PEDAL COMMANDER
I thought the gs400s made 300hp from factory
Correct - at the crank. Dyno sheets are almost always in whp.
Nice work👏 but not for me...I will rather not lose power in the low rev range where the engine spends a lot of time...by the time I get to the higher rev range I will be approaching 120mph@4krevs in a GS300 and end up losing my license 😂😂😂
I totally get it. The stock intake is pretty good anyway.
Does it have vvl?
vvl?
@@ForwardMomentum variable valve timing ? Sounds like it kicks in around 5k rpm
Oh ok. Yes! VVTi. The 1UZ/3UZ also has an ACIS VSV which goes from long to short runners. Two systems.
Im gonna try and fit the srt lexus intake from my gs400 onto my ls400 it looks nearly the same setup , checkout my channel i will be uploading soon
What mods to get the exhaust like yours
Total flow 2.5 bullet in first muffler location, straight pipes on both resonator spots, 2.25 mandrel axle back to 2.25 bullets on each side.
Don’t do it!! Especially if you have Lexus, it’s only gonna make your check engine light come on
Yep, exactly why I did an episode on taking it off. It screws your STFTs and LTFTs up bad!
is this the same with the gs300? parts and engine bay etc
No, the GS inline 6 has a different PN and system. However, the general concept and installation is similar.
@@ForwardMomentum what k&n cold air intake would fit a gs300 can't find anything
also thank you for your fast responses, its really nice seeing a GS channel. my 1998 gs300 is my first car
No prob! Looks like you’re limited on what’s available. See if the HPS intake would work for you.
