  • This video I discuss the pitfalls of overplanning a jiu jitsu a game plan for a jiu jitsu tournament. The biggest issue is you can not know what your opponent will do before the fight. So its more important to focu on key skill sets that will likely be important than making a step by step game plan for each scenario.

    I always did best with no game plan and treating it like trying to win during rolls in the gym. I pretend the opponent is a random guy visiting from another gym

    My best tournament strategy:
    1. Stay home and save a lot of money.
    2. Use the money to buy snacks.
    3. Cry because my gi is too small.

    I have driven myself insane overthinking my “gameplan” on long drives to compete, knowing full well I can’t predict how anything will go , now I keep it simple, make some grips I like feel the opponent out and either takedown or pull guard, from there I just allow my training to take over knowing something will come to me depending what he gives me , thank you for driving this concept home!

    Not me psyching myself out frantically YouTubing game plans before my first tournament tomorrow.
    This is all great advice. I went through the same thing back in my wrestling days. I’m just gonna be confident in my grappling, focus on my breathing, and try my best not to spaz out.

    Your instructionals are Sooo GOOOD!
    I have your Open Guard and Closed Guard instructionals and they have made a huge difference in my Jiu Jitsu. Very concise and to the point. Easy to review the whole series. You should produce more of these!

    LOVED this video! Preparing for tournaments can be extremely stressful for lower belts because of the lack of knowledge. They dont have a "game" or have systems to funnel to their strong positions. It can be natural to want to have a hyper focused gameplan so there's a feeling of control during preparation and during the match. This was a very eye opening perspective to the possible faults of that strategy. At the end of the day train hard, expand your knowledge, trust your instincts, and have fun!

    Brother, I'll be fighting tomorrow for the French nationals in blue. I'm only halfway through your video and I paused to write this comment: thank you. Honestly your point saying "if you prepare for an exact gameplan you're adding additional pressure because you feel like you're supposed to do something, on top of the stress of the competition" is sooooo valid. Tomorrow I'll try to fight with a lighter mental workload and with a greater confidence in my jiujitsu. Thank you

    Solid video and advice.
    I wish I could find the video where the guy does a whole sequence for his white belts to do in a competition. I came across and have used it up to purple. It was by far the most solid and effective game plan ever, BUT if they pulled guard or took you down, there wasn't a backup plan. But thep plan A was ace and I used it in 2 out of 3 matche to get gold in purple weight division, (Masters 3 cause I'm old)a few weeks ago. 3rd time I showed off my wrestling and set up a nice double.

    I have a little bit of a different issue. I've competed one time last year at a Grappling Industries tournament in the blue belt division. I won all 3 of my matches via submission and won gold. Now because of the legit perfect record, I am kind of nervous and scared to compete again because I don't want to ruin my perfect streak. I don't know how to break this feeling besides just competing I guess.

    I think that this strategy is something to strive for, but likely won’t pan out well for 90% of competitors. Waiting to react to the opponent will put most of us behind on the score cards and typically on defense. I think you need to have a plan for the start, whether it’s to work for certain takedowns or a guard pull. Besides that, also have some strategies for common positions ready and drill them in specific training before the comp so you can be better prepared to perform under high stress. You touch on some of that, but I feel like the message of just train and try to “be present” at tournaments is not enough, especially for early belts.

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  Рік тому +7

      Being present doesn’t mean reacting to your opponent in a defensive manner it just means acting with first response your body gives. This will actually have the opposite of effect of making you way quicker in reaction time. When you try to force your game plan it will often stifle you because it’s not possible in given situation. If you have a general idea like pull guard, that’s fine as no one can stop that regardless. However most people I see trying this have ideas of what guard they are going to play and ect and that just isn’t possible. Trying to game plan is usually what is killing most students I have seen in my opinion.

    I think a good follow up would be to go a bit more in-depth with the training up to a tournament. For example 10-12 weeks out how to gradually change your training to become more specific to the actual tournament format. You could use yourself as an example and even though it's specific to you there would be adaption that ppl could make. Why re-invent the wheel, if that makes sense...

  • @AAAA-ud5pu

    What if you force your game on your opponent? My game is half guard/deep half and I always pull right into it. That is my game plan and it always works in the sense that I always get there. I think that you still need to plan what words makes more sense to use in certain contexts. So the game plan should be about getting to situations where you force the conversation that allows you to use the few words you know. This is better than not planning at all.

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  Рік тому +7

      Well if I don’t want someone to have half guard and I stand in a position such that you can’t get it, it’s literally not an option, you have to have secondary options to threat. It doesn’t mean you won’t have positions you go to all the time or that you would like to do, but if they aren’t available you have to build off what they give. If you are good at half guard it will naturally happen with out you having to make a specific game plan.

    I’ve got my first real tournament coming up in December and I’m currently out of training with an awful cold and feel like my cardio and conditioning are going to be affected for the competition, I know it’s not the end of the world to go out there and lose but I feel like I have a real shot at winning this comp. Do you think when it comes to the day of the tournament I should take it easy and try to just be patient and better technically, or just go out there and see what happenes?

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  Рік тому +1

      Just be calm and try to enjoy the moment and let your technique work. If you try to over plan you are going to stress your self out. Learn from what happens in the matches win or lose and grow from it.
