    Great topic and one I often come accross. It's not even always directly game dev. For example I sometimes feel behind promoting my games.

    Thank you for your honesty and encouragement. They really helped me as I’m bogged down in learning a new thing for my game which is taking me a lot lot longer than I like, but this really helped. Thank you 😊

    I've always wanted to make games since I was 12. 26 years later I'm still just a hobbyist with no games completed, but I still keep pounding away and learning.

    • @SoulEngineDev
      @SoulEngineDev  Місяць тому +1

      You’re still making it happen! A hobbyist is still a game dev in my opinion. Keep it up!

    Thanks for this! I've been doing online game dev classes and the odd game jam on and off for the past 5 or 6 years (or longer?). I just really enjoy learning all these new skills and how multi-disciplinary everything is. Neither my art nor programming is great, but I can see that I've been improving, and even bringing my small ideas to life is really satisfying. I try not to pressure myself, but I do try to push myself. I like to think I'm in it for the long haul :)

    We would need to learn to work together. That could be fruitful (or toxic).

    yes, totally feel like this all the time. Seeing all these people working on all these cool games out there, all of them have their own studios already, and me, I don't even know how this studio thing even works, I don't think I can even have a studio, I'm not living in my home country, so my plan is to publish under my own name like David Wehle does as a sole proprietor

      I’m rooting for you! Don’t give up. It’s hard but if it’s your dream, you should go for it.

    About myself: I'm near to my 50's, I almost have died a few years ago, and this all motivated me to make my childhood dream fulfill: make a game.
    About my pace: I have daily job and family, and other responsibilities. My current project will have an end, there is a scope defined. But I take it as not my first priority. The first priority is life-balance (kinda).

    • @halivudestevez2
      @halivudestevez2 Місяць тому

      for faster pace we could join and work together and coop. It's ovewhelming, exhausting to be jack-o-trades.

      Love the "kinda" at the end there, because SOOOOO many of us live there. Go make that game my friend, you got this!

    Filling the creative tank. I've spent too many years not doing this and wondering why i was burning out so quickly in each season

      Read books! Read them all the time. Can't read books? Audiobooks! All the fun inspirational stuff is in there. It's a literal untapped goldmine

    I've been doing this as a hobby for about a year now, and other people I talk to who do this make me feel ahead of the curve as you say. At least development-wise, need to work on my general art skills.

    I've always felt behind in so many ways, sometimes even to my past self! There felt like there was no way for myself to stop perceiving 'me' as some kind of low level goblin. So I started picking up more skills, and am kind of a jack of all trades type now too. And for some reason, learning more skills made me realize these other people had to learn too. Sure, they may have started earlier or are younger than me, but it doesn't eat away at me anymore, because what they're doing is attainable.
    Technically, I've been making games since I was a wee kid, but I didn't persist. I can probably say 3 years of kinda knowing what I'm doing.

    Yeah i dont know why im so eager to make playable games, im itching for it like i only have 6 months to live. Anyways, i have learnt some patience and have decided to take some steps back just recreate simple small games, each game growing in scope and complexitiy. Started with Pong, my next game is either The Legend of Zelda or Terraria, haven't decided yet, will probably finish with Minecraft and then I will finally let myself take my creative freedom back and try to make something original and definitely not over-scoped hehe. This challenge has really helped with my confidence and proving to myself i am a capable game developer after having dropped 3 of my projects that i felt strongly about in a row. No more 5 month long walls of paralysis where i cant work on my game despite really wanting to. Now the only walls i plan to hit are walls of burnout or confusion, walls that are scalable given time.
