Knowing When to Move On: The Game Dev Nightmare | Devlog #0
The beginning is very exciting. You're exploring. Even when you have a clear idea, there's still a lot of discovery that makes it interesting. Its very free-flowing. (Sometimes it can be too free which makes people never get out of that phase lol) The further you go, the more it becomes boring because its just executing the same thing over and over. Putting maps together, balancing. Bugs. Its not as fun (to me at least). I dont really know how to make it easier to pull through that phase though lol!
Sounds very familiar! Haha.
Can anyone else relate to growing tired of working on your project? 200 days isn't even that long of time for game development, but man, I'm having a hard time. How do you guys push through? Lets hear it!
Soul Engine running out of gas? Devour more souls, the ends justify the means.
MORE SOULS
This comment wins the Internet lol
Great topic and one I often come accross. It's not even always directly game dev. For example I sometimes feel behind promoting my games.
Thanks for this! I've been doing online game dev classes and the odd game jam on and off for the past 5 or 6 years (or longer?). I just really enjoy learning all these new skills and how multi-disciplinary everything is. Neither my art nor programming is great, but I can see that I've been improving, and even bringing my small ideas to life is really satisfying. I try not to pressure myself, but I do try to push myself. I like to think I'm in it for the long haul :)
That’s awesome! Keep going and learning, you got this!
About myself: I'm near to my 50's, I almost have died a few years ago, and this all motivated me to make my childhood dream fulfill: make a game. About my pace: I have daily job and family, and other responsibilities. My current project will have an end, there is a scope defined. But I take it as not my first priority. The first priority is life-balance (kinda).
for faster pace we could join and work together and coop. It's ovewhelming, exhausting to be jack-o-trades.
Love the "kinda" at the end there, because SOOOOO many of us live there. Go make that game my friend, you got this!
We would need to learn to work together. That could be fruitful (or toxic).
nice video, it made me learn that when I make a game it's always a hideous freak 👍my hideous freak journey is going strong
Thank you for being here. Listen, we all have a hideous freak journey lol
Almost a week of trying to learn 🤣
Keep it, you got this!
I've always wanted to make games since I was 12. 26 years later I'm still just a hobbyist with no games completed, but I still keep pounding away and learning.
You’re still making it happen! A hobbyist is still a game dev in my opinion. Keep it up!
Thank you for your honesty and encouragement. They really helped me as I’m bogged down in learning a new thing for my game which is taking me a lot lot longer than I like, but this really helped. Thank you 😊
I’m so glad it could help! I’m just talking to myself a lot of the time too.
5 years of iterating on ideas
This is SUPER valuable experience to have, keep it up!
@SoulEngineDev I get dunning Kruger effect so bad every time I learn a new skill hahaha
What’s the name of the game you show throughout?
It’s a game called Inmost! Way more linear than I expected but a great game.
I've been making games for 23 years. Only left behind by the medias, for the most part.
That’s so awesome. You must have so much knowledge!
@SoulEngineDev knowledge yeah probably but especially so many games 🙃
Yeah i dont know why im so eager to make playable games, im itching for it like i only have 6 months to live. Anyways, i have learnt some patience and have decided to take some steps back just recreate simple small games, each game growing in scope and complexitiy. Started with Pong, my next game is either The Legend of Zelda or Terraria, haven't decided yet, will probably finish with Minecraft and then I will finally let myself take my creative freedom back and try to make something original and definitely not over-scoped hehe. This challenge has really helped with my confidence and proving to myself i am a capable game developer after having dropped 3 of my projects that i felt strongly about in a row. No more 5 month long walls of paralysis where i cant work on my game despite really wanting to. Now the only walls i plan to hit are walls of burnout or confusion, walls that are scalable given time.
I’m hearing this strategy from so many devs lately, and I think it’s really smart! Keep us updated on how it works out!
yes, totally feel like this all the time. Seeing all these people working on all these cool games out there, all of them have their own studios already, and me, I don't even know how this studio thing even works, I don't think I can even have a studio, I'm not living in my home country, so my plan is to publish under my own name like David Wehle does as a sole proprietor
I’m rooting for you! Don’t give up. It’s hard but if it’s your dream, you should go for it.
I've always felt behind in so many ways, sometimes even to my past self! There felt like there was no way for myself to stop perceiving 'me' as some kind of low level goblin. So I started picking up more skills, and am kind of a jack of all trades type now too. And for some reason, learning more skills made me realize these other people had to learn too. Sure, they may have started earlier or are younger than me, but it doesn't eat away at me anymore, because what they're doing is attainable. Technically, I've been making games since I was a wee kid, but I didn't persist. I can probably say 3 years of kinda knowing what I'm doing.
This sounds like me! Thanks for sharing your story. It’s important to remember that we’re all just moving at the best pace for us.
I’ve been making games for a LONG time. Too long. But that’s ok because I’m still having fun with it!
That’s what’s important!
I've spent 15 years in the industry and have never felt ahead. Ever!
Feels like we’ve all been there! Glad we can encourage each other.
Filling the creative tank. I've spent too many years not doing this and wondering why i was burning out so quickly in each season
Read books! Read them all the time. Can't read books? Audiobooks! All the fun inspirational stuff is in there. It's a literal untapped goldmine
Great advice! I’ve been trying to read more books lately and it’s definitely inspiring.
Have you guys every felt behind in game dev? Maybe you feel that way now. I've been there too. Let us know where you are below, and share you journey! Can't wait to read them all!
FIRST!
While I disagree with the YT title (it's not key to making good games and growing veg isn't tense), I was disappointed to spend 10 minutes for you to say: put beautiful/cosy places in and scary/dark places in; use light and sound to achieve that.
I think the words I used might have been to broad. I believe every good game gives you a reason to play it. Weather its growing things, saving a kingdom, or diving into oceans. What makes those things fun then, is the tension, or contrast I talked about. Diving into oceans, or growing things, wouldn't really be fun if there was no pay off, diving deeper into the oceans, wouldn't have had as big a pay off if it was more of the same and I think that was more of what I was trying to convey. I appreciate your feedback though, its got me thinking which I love haha! Thank you for being here!
I never knew it was a horror game if you go too far down. I never got to that part of it lol, I only saw the serene stuff, had no idea about jump scares and horror game elements
Haha! Pretty crazy.
Okay everyone, what are your thoughts on how contrast builds tension in games? To me its foundational, but what do you guys think? Can't wait to chat with you guys!
Absolutely agree with this principle, and have aimed for this from the beginning. What's awesome is that you'll find this true in many things. It's part of what makes our world so beautiful. I mean, no landscape would be pretty if you didn't know what a dull landscape looks like!
Cool video. 🔥
Where is the discord link?
I had to update the description. There should be a link in there now, pumped to have you!
@ wow, even if that was an auto response. It made me feel welcomed. I just wanna hang out with other devs and learn to make beautiful games.
Whole message feels so genuine and warm 🤗
Ah, I gotta play Eastward again, such a charming game.
also i been looking into voice for AI
I would like to invvest more into my voice but I have a speech impediment therefore last time tried making a video people tend to barely understand me. same when I join a discord call I have to resort to typing.
Thanks for sharing this! We all have things that are more difficult for us than others, I think it just gives us the chance to be more creative. I saw your comment about using AI for your voice, that’s definitely interesting and potentially a good idea! Don’t stop looking for ways to make it work. There are so many things that tech can help us do these days.
I've had the opposite problem to you. For me, Isolation is the only place where I feel I can do what I want without having to look to an audience for approval. My fears about other people have held me back way longer than you've been held back. I've lost over a decade to trying please people I don't even know, who wouldn't care either way. Not everyone can actually find a group that aligns with their values. This is my curse. I've burned ever bridge I've tried to build. You probably don't care.
Thanks for sharing your perspective-that is really tough. But it’s good to remember that other devs face struggles that can be solved by opposite actions, so I’m glad that you’re willing to talk about it. I’m sorry you’ve felt held back by the opinions of others. The best games are made by devs who feel passionate and excited about their ideas, in my opinion. So please don’t give up! What are you working on now?
@@SoulEngineDev brain storming a lot of stuff but i think the most immediate thing i wanna do is a mostly simple, non-profit fangame to start with, then see if i can tackle the big ideas!
Dude that sounds awesome! Definitely keep at it. Keep us updated!
How have you became a better dev over the years! Lets us know!
By allowing myself to have fun, and realizing that I love the puzzle of coding complicated stuff cleanly and efficiently.
working on an first person horror game similar to penumbra and silent hill haha wish me luck
Whoa, sounds crazy! Good luck!
Cringe ranting. Games are wrong medium to tell the story, bucko.
Thank you for this. I wish I had a video like this back when I started haha, no idea what I was doing back then
Glad it could be encouraging!
Man I love Moonlighter so much
@@JuhoSprite Is that hit character Juho Sprite from JerBob’s server?
This is pretty much where I’m at atm…and I’m loving it.
One of the reasons I reject money. I hate it. I do not want it. It corrupts. It kills. It ruins art and people. It disgusts me.
dope! can you give me your money?
@@abnnr I would have to make some, going against my value to support YOUR greed
The joy of dying of hunger for your art ❤
😂 there’s definitely a balance to keep in mind!
...This is a nice idea - but over half my pension tomorrow is gonna get eaten by debt. Life, sometimes, can be quite hard.
I totally understand that. It’s something we have to balance and figure out what works best for each individual journey, for sure.
remember who you are. and don't forget that that's what people actually want!
This!
I really resonated with your thoughts here. This last couple months I've been frustrated because my games don't feel fun, so I decided to put gameplay first and make no art. But then I stopped wanting to make games because just making programmer art move around is not me, its not the feelings or story I want to express, its not the reason I want to make games. Your video reminded me why I wanted to make games in the first place. I don't care if my games aren't gameplay fun. I just want to put a part of me out into the world. Thank you!
This is so awesome to hear, thank you for sharing this! I’m glad you’re feeling inspired to keep creating games that are fun to you.
This is absolutely true, when I started my first commercial project I had totally different feelings...I never thought about marketing, I never thought about setting a price, I never thought about how much it is important to find a way to find people interested in what you are doing. Before I was just making games experimenting new things for me! Anyway I can't say if now it is worse or better... it's just different! I feel like it's a new chapter of my game dev life... hopefully a better one! Who knows!
I had a creative thinking class in college. The lecturer said, if you're going to make something just to please yourself, you might as well be m4sturb4t1ng because it's quicker and easier. The point she was making is, you're not making creative projects for yourself, you're making it for your audience. So while I don't disagree that we should make games that we are passionate about, but we also need to keep in mind that what we make is for our audience. Find a middle ground.
This is good, and really true. It’s important to think about the people who are playing our games too!
she probably has never cum in her life
What's your discord
You can find the link in the description, or in our channel details. We'd love to have you!
I am always going to stick to the ethos that I'm going to make something that I want to play, that I'm going to enjoy playing and I'm not going to change it to please a mass of "others" who think they know better. I'm not unique, I'm not special, there's millions of people in the world that are like me, who have the same preferences as me and want to play the games that I want to play. "If you build it, they will come" ..Which admittedly is a common misquote from field of dreams, but it's true however you say it lol
Good insight!
"The REAL treasure was the friendship we found along the way!" 😅🎉 For real though, great video, bro!
Not too applicable to me yet, but money has affected the way the studio I’m working with has viewed our project, a lot of work is going into it and our lead dev is a little stressed over it. I’ll send him this
Awesome! I hope it helps. Thanks for sharing!
I had the same problem. My problem was I had the script on a child of the weapon so it wouldn't update the direction until the weapon was used. It took me way too long to fix to lol
