  • Welcome to Scooter Street! In this detailed guide, we'll help you uncover the best scooter engine for tuning. Whether you're a beginner looking to start tuning your scooter or a seasoned rider in search of a new project bike, choosing the right engine is crucial for achieving your desired performance.
Different scooter models have varying engine characteristics and capabilities, resulting in significant differences in power output. For example, while one scooter may have a maximum power of 7 horsepower, another might have 70 horsepower. These differences can greatly impact your tuning experience.
When it comes to scooter tuning, two factors play a vital role: engine characteristics and the availability of performance parts. Engine characteristics determine how well your scooter responds to performance tuning, while the availability of performance parts ensures that you have options to modify and enhance your engine.
We'll delve into the four major engine types commonly found in scooters: Honda engine, Minarelli engine, Morini engine, and Piaggio Hiper 2 engine. Each engine type has its unique characteristics and variations, making it essential to understand their strengths and tuning potential.
The Honda engine, known for its reliability and longevity, is available in vertical and horizontal models. It's a great choice for mild engine tuning, offering a range of options for achieving a street setup with 7 to 10 horsepower.
The Minarelli engine, synonymous with Yamaha scooters, comes in both vertical and horizontal variations. It is highly regarded for its tuning capabilities, particularly in the liquid cooled variant, which is one of the best 50cc two-stroke engines ever made.
The Morini engine, commonly used by manufacturers like TGB, Pegasus, and Suzuki, is known for its moderate to high-end tuning ability. However, it is important to note that the Morini engine is prone to left-hand crank bearing failures in some iterations.
Finally, we have the Piaggio Hiper 2 engine, which is our personal favourite. It can be found in various Piaggio-associated brands like Aprilia, Derby, and Vespa. This engine stands out due to its newer design, extensive parts availability, and the ability to convert between air-cooled and liquid-cooled variations.
Throughout the video, we'll explore these engines in detail, discussing their pros and cons, tuning potential, and available performance parts. By the end, you'll have a clear understanding of the best scooter engine for your tuning needs.

I'm just getting into scooter maintenance and tuning, and this channel is _unbelievably_ valuable. Great information, but most critically, great communication. One thing I would comment is that the addition of some sort of visual aids (footage, images, or animation etc) concurrent with the speaking would really help with making the information points/video intuitively engaging (and probably consequently pull more views too). It'll be a cost-benefit evaluation to figure out how far you'd want to go with that though, as I imagine it'll take more time. There might be a sweet-spot of effort-to-reward in there somewhere.

3 years ago I decided to stop taking my yamaha aerox to the mechanic shop...I took the time to watch a lot of videos, on carb tuning, engine rebuilding, top end and bottom end and I have never looked back. saved so much money and eventually got to the point of redoing my crank bearings, seals, piston, gaskets etc. I will say, minarellis are easy to work with in my opinion, once you know what your doing. only thing I don't do is my electrical system/brakes as I have no experience or trust myself with doing my brakes.

The late model 4 strokes EFI are very diificult/expensive as they are controlled by an ECU, the ECU holds the limit to the power, replace this and then you can upgrade the engine and reap the rewards. Until the ECU is unlocked or replaced most mods will be unrewarding.

I've already installed 3 new carburetors, 3 different csi boxes, different coil wires, and a couple other things and I can't seem to get rid of it. Would a bad stator or rectifier be the cause? • @scooterstreetau

Could be: Weak spark, CDI or Stator not burning the fuel and this gives a rich engine. 2nd thing to check, the auto choke on the carby and make sure the jet is not rich. When this happens it is usually caused by a rich system. The rich system can be from over fuelling or under sparking, usually the latter and I would change the stator.

  • @KuRo88

Minarelli and Morini (and Peugeot) engines are way easier to convert to LC than Piaggios btw.. In Piaggios you need to split the engine, in Minarelli you simply put on the water pump parts instead of the fan. I found it kind of strange that it's mentioned how easy it is in the Piaggio (where it actually is the "hardest" to convert and do maintainence on compared to the other engines out there).
One big part difference that devides the CPI engine from the Minarellis is the Gearbox. It's basically a completely different construction back there. A Minarelli Wheel will also not fit on a CPI engine. Other than that, the CVT case on the CPI engines is like the Minarelli short (which was ignored in this video, but that's okay, the short minarellis are quite rare). Overrange Kits will only fit with modifications to the CVT case. You can fit a minarelli Crank with bearings in the CPI case if you want to. But actually some do the opposite today since parts are available and a bigger spline means more strength. Not that I've seen a spline fail other than in crazy applications like homemade 2 cylinders.. But it's better to have something than to need it, I guess.
Tuning wise, you can get pretty much the same power out of a Minarelli or Piaggio.. Theres also almost the "same" parts available.. The Piaggio engine is a little beefier casting wise, but not that much of a difference. I've built 20whp engines with both Minarelli and Piaggio back in the late 2000's to early 2010's. Today it's "easy" (easier) to get 25+hp because of the parts available. (Theres way less parts today than back then, but more advanced and overall better quality). There's a couple of benefits for the Piaggio intake wise, because the engine mount is on the lower side of the engine compared to the Minarellis with their top side engine mounts, so on Minarelli you have to modify some stuff to fit a straight and short intake with air intake over the wheel.. The benefit for the Minarelli is that you can built a central suspension because the engine mount and the engine stand are far enough apart. (The Aprilia Area 51 for example has central suspension). Back in the day, optics was a big part of tuning over here in europe. So central suspension in an Aerox was a big thing. Today it might be unimportant.
In racing (which is still kind of big over here, both circuit and drag racing) Minarelli and Piaggio are eye to eye. Circuit is mostly Yog R/Aerox vs Zip SP/ Gilera Runner.

Making this video we hoped to create a discussion and get some great comments for all to read, Thanks so much for your input and sharing your experience👏 On the Zip you do the same , just add a water pump and radiator, same as any engine that has an Air and H2o Version.
