This was my first ever carving! Unfortunately, I only made it a quarter way through the star before the wood split in half and I sliced into my left index finger and severed two tendons. I was too impatient to wait for my cut resistant gloves to be delivered and instead used my cloth gardening gloves. I learned that they are no substitute. I had surgery to reattach the tendons last night and now have to do hand therapy. It will be a long recovery, but hopefully not the end of carving for me :)
Please learn from my mistakes and wear proper safety equipment

Thanks Doug, I guess I've got it bad? I pop onto YT most mornings ,while having a coffee, to see who's posted something. When I see " the blue dot" beside your name I feel like my cool uncle is bringing me a present. This morning I saw "the dot" and I thought to myself... Oh Boy! So, thanks for my present! You bring a little youth back to my 60 year old brain. I really appreciate what you do! ( I'm sure others feel the same ) Thank you man!

So when I started woodcarving a while back never thought much about cuts its only a wee knife lol I learned the hard way :-) take care out there be safe Great advise from Doug, look forward to your videos. p.s still have all my fingers lol. Back when Hector was a pup and I just finished high school, I worked for a dog groomer for a while. I learned how to cut a dog's toenails. The boss kept some stuff in the shop known as styptic powder. It comes in many different brand names. I keep a small tube of that and some superglue next to me when I am carving.
Great tips. I am enjoying this series. I wish you would do an intermediate series too. I love your carvings. It was watching your videos that made me go ahead and finally try it instead of just dreaming and thinking about doing it. Thank you for your videos teaching how to carve.

Doug, I really like your style of teaching. Your videos couldn't be more simple for us beginners. May I suggest keeping a small container of Cayenne pepper in your tool pouch? The next time you find yourself with a cut that won't stop bleeding, cover the wound with the pepper and it will stop bleeding right away. It does have some sting, but it doesn't last. We keep it our vehicle first aid kits as well.
    Thanks for what you do
    God bless.

Doug, a month or two ago I was carving the scarecrow from your video when the entire bottom section of the wood suddenly snapped off. I ended up cutting a portion of my right index finger off, I knew right away it was a bad cut so I grabbed a towel, wrapped the finger and headed to the ER. I usually always wear a glove, but for some reason I didn't put it on. The next day I found the finger on the floor of my shop, I will never make the mistake of not wearing a glove again. I'm really enjoying this series 👍

Thanks for another great informative video. I'd like to share a little tip I learned from my Grandma about 60yrs ago. Back then we didn't have stuff like stop clot. One day she sliced herself pretty deep with a paring knife. She just grabbed the sugar bowl and stuck her hand in it. Within a few seconds the sugar turned red, but the bleeding stopped. I have used this method at home a couple of times and it does work. Hope no one will need to use it, but there you are. Keep up the good work. Your instructions have helped me a lot.

Hi Doug, I've been a carpenter in UK for over 40 years and it never ceases to amaze me how even the old boys never learned to sharpen tools and make light work instead of forcing blunt tools into wood or masonry until something snaps or slips. At best, they end up with grazed knuckles and at worst, they go get bandaged up then return and continue EXACTLY as they left off all over again. Even the guy who taught me when I was a kid had lost two finger halves using saws in the machine shop - I noticed it and decided NOT to do as he did! I have been watching loads of carving videos recently, including most of yours and I will be getting some safety stuff to start off until I can handle the stuff with confidence, which I know from plenty of tool experience comes with practice.

  • @markgibbs904

Very inspirational. Cut story; bad finger tip cut a few years ago (not knife) the ER would have put 2 stitches. Instead I taped it down with butterflies. Had to do it with arm reaching upward as high as possible to make bleeding stop. Healed well.

Thank goodness I found the best person with so much experience on UA-cam to guide me.
I just started the hobby, carving with much anger however. Trying to force the wood to my bidding. Thankfully no accidents and I'm now having to sharpen my knife for the first time. I think tomorrow, I'll be "one with the knife and strop" before I even start carving again.
This video was a huge eye opener about my anger issues... what do I really wanna achieve from carving, and watching out for my safety.

I explained I was cutting myself...he explained the dull knife and pressure I was using was why, because I was pushing so heavily. I learned to handle a very sharp and have ever since. I assume that principal would also apply to carving.

Had a gouge slip full force off a "damp"piece of wood. Went into the webbing between my left thumb and index finger so far I could see my tendon. The dr said I was really lucky it missed my tendon and bone by mm. Ended up with 4 stitches and an interesting scar. I take blood thinners, I don't carve without my glove on my left hand and band-aids (2-3 deep) on my rt index finger and thumb. I am also keenly aware of where my fingers are in relation to the blade. Lesson learned. Been a year, no trips to urgent care! :) I need to buy stock in bad-aids though. :) Thank God my gouge was super sharp. I went clean into my hand.

Great video Doug, I think we've all cut our fingers and it can indeed be bad. Thanks, have a good day.

Such good advice...I would assume that a dull blade could be dangerous too. Oh, and thanks for the homework, makes me feel like a kid again. Love ya Doug...

Tnx's Doug. Not surprising, it's a great series. I get all my inspiration from Doug Linker. Looking forward to learn where you get yours.

Ouch! Slicing two fingers wide open (free flowing blood) sure put an end to teaching my kids to carve today. They started with simple cuts, I was going to show them the more advanced stuff. I watched most of your great videos. I sharpened my old wood carving knives to an edge better than any I ever achieved thanks to a strop. I wish I watched this one about the glove...my wife just gave me the raised eyebrow as she heard this video playing (from the phone being held in my bandaged hand 😂😂😢)
(Edit: 2 months later...got ‘comfortable’ and carved without a glove. Sliced a different finger open when a piece of wood broke along the grain! I’m fully committed to wearing my glove.)

Cool that you showed how easy it is to carve a Merkaba Star (Moravian Star)..
    Thanks!

Great video...:) I have whittled wood all my life. As a kid, I cut myself a lot....!!! My knives were sharp then but not as sharp as they are now! Along the way, as Doug says, I learned to cut with control. I am now retired and watch all kinds of carving videos and have begun carving. I wondered about using a glove? Again, as Doug says, these knives will cut you bad....!!!! I have tried a glove and after decades of no glove, they feel very awkward. Even though I have good cutting habits I keep wondering if I should get used to a glove....???? Anyway, for now I don't use one. My biggest problem is knives on the bench sticking my finger......:) Great instructions Doug....thanks a ton......:)

Doug, I love your videos! Informative and funny. I was carving with a glove, ignoring your advice to know where the knife will go if it slips or the wood breaks and stabbed a gash in my hand through the glove. Luckily I didn’t sever anything and it has healed well, but don’t be foolish just because you have the glove on! Never rush and never carve when you’re tired.

Great video. As a newcomer I have found the glove makes gripping the wood more difficult, but I am persevering. Cutting was difficult until it dawned on me the brand new knives were not fully sharpened. Everything you said not to do was exactly what I was doing, so thanks for passing on your knowledge, you likely saved me from a visit to hospital. It would have been nice to see a UA-cam video that shows you which shape of blade is best for which cut, although I see the knife you use seems like a great allrounder.

Thanks Doug the star is a great practice technique and Christmas present !!!
I'll add after doing several of these the things I've really learned on these stars is knowing when to change the direction of your carving to go with the grain and sharpen your knife during the carving.

I was not thinking I would see the tree rings. They added another dimension before painting. Very interesting
