On June 13th Eyedea & Abilities performed their new album "By The Throat", for an intimate audience at Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis, MN. Each song was prefaced with a short story or an explanation about that song. Michael Gaughan, the artist responsible for the album artwork, did a watercolor painting of the duo while they performed. one of the greatest musicians to have ever lived, shame a lot more people dont know about him,his music helped me through a lot and many others im sure
To fortify your statement... I, SECOND (yes, only one in 7+years) this proclamation!
R.Eye.P
The main reason why I would want a afterlife is so I could meet and talk to this man.
He was a great lyricist and an even better person
Don't be silly. There is more out there.
@@EthosF4ded no but he is the best one out there, plus you cant just go onto a different rapper. Especially with eyedea
@@Ivilce99 Eyewear has been and still is (maybe that change) my favorite lyricist ever but my point was there is more to involve yourself in. Like you heard of Tom Macdonald? That guys amazing.
@@EthosF4ded Tom Macdonald dissed mac tho.
I've been trying to unwrap this song for over a decade. It still brings tears to my eyes. It's still about him. It's still about me. It's still about you. It tears me up inside.
Very well said. I'm in the same position. A decade of thinking about this track and it never stops hurting.
for everyone asking about the painter:
it's common for performance art (music, poetry, etc.) to be paired with visual art at live shows. the musician does their thing as the visual artist does their thing...then the visual artist shows the audience what they created. double dose of art.
Rest In Peace Eyedea. You were an incredible person and an incredible MC. This world won't be same without you.
I DO NOT WANT TO LEAVE THIS PLACE!!! After so many years I'm still here and he's STILL SO ALIVE! Amazing!!!!
He was a fucking maniac on the stage, he feels the music like few others. We are privileged to have been able to experience him and his music.
God he is dearly missed. By me and so many others.
Thank you son for opening up my ears to this epic sound.
.. So, I'm pretty addicted to opiates, specifically h, and trust me, Eyedea was too. When I first started listening to his music, I wasn't nearly as into drugs as I am now, and didn't realize how much his music (specifically his latest album) was about opiate addiction, then I became fairly dependent on h & now catch an unbelievable amount of drug/addiction references.
It's scary how much I can relate to so his music. It makes me want to get clean, before it's too late you know.
what u must never do is describe your own world. your own music. in your own words. but he did.
I am almost 7(+) years now clean from junk, and I used to run into Mike at the Access Works needle exchange in the mid to late 00s, he introduced himself to me because I didn’t recognize him at first and he needed help finding a fix and so he met a middle man one time years back before he passed. I wish he was still alive, I’d have gladly went to keep his life going in some karmic exchange but sadly that’s not how that game works. So grateful to not have that be my reality. But I’ll always remember seeing Mike “Eyedea” Larsen those few times at access works in the late 00s when it was still operating near between Nicollet 15th Oak Grove, so grateful to have survived those dark days. RIP eternally Mike Larsen
My all time favorite song. Im sad to see you go man, you were my favorite artist. You were an inspiration and what you did in your life will forever echo through your fans for eternity.
I cried watching this. EYEDEA was such a genius. I believe I know exactly how he felt thru his heroin addiction. He describes what I felt (and feel) better than anyone on Earth. ♡♡♡Eyedea, your pain is over. You are now flying high in the skies of heaven and I count down the seconds to when I will meet you there.
-Lisa Karson
I know you posted this months ago, but I cry every night knowing I can't meet him.... R.EYE.P.
+Natalie Castellano
i thought I was too emotional. I am. At least I have passion but it can be a fucking curse a lot. A lot lot. "God please help! Too much grim to look at!" -Atmosphere... Feel free to tt me whenever you want, if you want to. I'm on Twitter now too, under the same name. I'm glad ur passionate about REAL music.
-hat tilt
+lisa karson Hats off to you too, chickie! I don't access my Twitter account, but you should look for me on FB! If you can. I'll never stop burning for this man. "I'd rather die of passion than of boredom"
no way someone as smart as him believedin heaven.
lisa karson .. much love! you are not alone. 💚
I lost my big sister to oxycontin on my birthday 4 years ago. Now Eyedea on the same date in October. I slept on Eyedea passing... I was too busy enjoying his new album to notice he had died. He was the same age as my sister. Eyedea remains a big source of inspiration and he will be missed very much.
dude i cry listening to this album no lie
Eyedea is right up there with 2pac in my opinion. Love the guy's music so much. Been a fan of his for years. R.I.P Mikey.
+Bobba Fett
2 Pac and Eyedea the same poetically? I don't even think their style is even remotely similar. I cannot think of one rapper that was on Eyedea's level. I hate comparing artists in that sense, too because each artist has their own personal experiences, background, tragedies, accomplishments and skill sets which do not define them, but collectively, they give u a good idea of who they are as a person... but,
"to each his own." And you're entitled to your opinion as well. ;)
@Detriment Hip Hop I doubt it
@@lisakarson3279 I have no EYEDEA who 2pac is anyway ! ;)
My friend Nik turned me on to THIS SONG by E&A before he passed away in a car crash a couple of years ago. Who would have ever thought they would have had such a massive impact on m life. God bless him and I can't wait to see him again.
Infinite blessings you will one day 🙏
Abilities did a phenomenal job on the beat, and you can hear the sincerity and passion so clearly in Eyedeas voice on this - both the studio version and live.
Probably my favorite song of theirs, and all-time as well.
Rhyme In Paradise, Eyedea.
Peace & LOVE Forever
My number one favorite artist, man. He was great, but he had so much more ahead of him. RIP Eyedea, you changed my life.
you said it right. an artist.
This live set is so fucking special. Thank you Rhymesayers. Thank you Michael.
The eyedea and the abilities. Art never dies. So many core memories attached to these melodies.
Dude was in a lot of pain. I've never related to another artist as much as I do Micheal.
He reminds me of Depeche Mode and Alice in Chains. He channeled it really, really well.
Exactly, dude. Same battle with addiction and everything.
Joy Division, The Doors...
Guys, eyedea didn't have an addiction problem. Eyedea was a livewire who was passionate about his work and about writing, he told stories, some of them personal some fictional. His mother has repeatedly denied that he was abusing opiates, it was a bad chemical combination between prescriptions that killed Micheal. I know its easy to confuse these things because so many musicians are lost to suicide/addiction, but Micheal was not an addict nor suicidal, just a tragic loss truly. The world lost one of the greatest underground musicians in human history.
Have any of his other friends or fellow artists corroborated that? Otherwise, to me, it seems like a mom trying to protect her late son's image; which is hard to do when the Coroner's says he died of acute Opioid toxicity. If you combine that with the fact that he has a few songs clearly about Opioid addiction, and that - in *at least* one instance (Live at First Ave show on UA-cam) - he came on stage with a band aid over the vein on his left arm with fresh blood on it, you can see why people think he was an addict. None of this is conclusive, obviously and none of us ever knew the guy personally, so this is all speculation. Personally, though, I choose to believe he was until evidence to the contrary is presented, other than his mom saying "no he wasn't." I think it makes songs like this hit so much harder.
Great Eyedeas never die x x
Eyedea lives!

I don’t know what to say except, I love him, no other artist has moved me in the way Mikey did. And to him I give thanks.❤️ miss ya Mikey.
I'm glad Abilities explained that and I may be making an assumption but that was a very psychedelic description he gave. I miss Eyedea already, unbelievable.
his energy on stage was just amazing, its sad i found about eyedea after he died or else wouldve done anything to see him live!
I went to one of his shows and he never came to the stage like 2 hours late. I was tripping on mushrooms and left early tho. Big time regret for me.
That was amazing to watch. Eyedea and Abilities were the perfect combination.
RIP Eyedea you will be missed.. Damn shame we never got around to work with one another.. My condolences to your fam and friends
Thanks for all, Michael. I miss your deep songs like that, help for the sadness.
Yo Eye, you know that mic comes off the stand right. Fucking awesome set.
Eyedea was really handsome. No homo.
Rest in Peace, Eyedea.
You were one of the greatest musicians to ever live, and you were a true artist.
You are still one of the greatest inspirations I've had in my music. and in my
breaking(Bboying) Tears come to my eyes whenever I watch old footage of you
preforming live. You were my hero, and I never got to experience the genius that
was Micheal Larsen, Oliver Hart, Eyedea in person. I will always regret that.
I love you, man.
So good at performing! Surely lets out the emotion to the song
he's a huge inspiration, i almost lost my life to herion more than twice. checked myself into rehab and im 6 months sober. this was always my favorite song by him because i know the feeling
Hope you're doing alright, brother.
Damn, This song is like a fucking punch in the chest. Absolutely amazing
Freaking Michael over there pouring his heart and damaged soul out over and over and Abilities just vibing to the drums.haha
genius by day, junkie by night.
Ryhme In Peace........Rest In Beats........Thank You Eyedea, For Fulfilling your Life's Destiny.
Happy birthday man, thanks for your presence here on Earth
I was totally blind to the fact that Eyedea had passed until Paid Dues 2011 when Sage Francis dedicated his set to him. I cannot describe the feelings I have every time I listen or think of him. Definitely a slap in the face to remind me that life is short and we should all strive to do the best we can. Just like Mikey did
I literally just got transported into Eyedeas head, and I saw what he saw. Most magical thing...
I think eyedea is the perfect example of true enlightenment, once we can understand and answer the big questions of "why", life itself is no longer siginificant, and we die.
I like how eyedea literally mumbles some of his verse cause its so complicated haah but its still sick as fuck, Much love to E&A
This is perfection.
I'm back for the 100th time!
too good for words. miss you bro
Thank you for everything, Micheal.
VANCOUVER BC AND HEADLINE!!!! that was sooo gooodd.
Eyedea is eternal man I miss u May u R.I.P till we meet Mickey
July 21st 2017 still going strong.
This song always made me wonder if you'd go out the way you did. Your words were as close to perfect as any emcee will ever get (in my opinion). Rest in peace.
This whole show was so epic..this song encapsulated the whole fúcking thing
I just got back from rehab for opiates. Never gonna die like that and waste genius like Eyedea's skills. I could be something someone might miss too.
hell ya, jameson! representing in 09 E&A Day forever
I think that was the first time I've ever heard Abilities' voice... awesome...
such a unique style. epic
How does this not have 1,000,000 views?
doesn't look like a stereotypical rapper, but he defines rap. exactly. i love this guy.
I love the song's lyrics & music.
I wish I could have been here in this time and place.
Rest in Peace Eyedea. You are missed
We are all suffering and aching without youu. RIP EYEDEA
Why does Eyedea have to be gone i know he lives in all that appreciate him, but imagine the songs he'd be producing right now.
It's 8 years after you posted. Personally, I feel like he's nearly my twin on the inside. A lot of people do. I am glad he didn't have another decade of increasing pain to go through. You can see his pain getting worse and worse during the last decade of his life. I really can't imagine the horror his life would be now.
R eye p. Getting me through this again
eyedea forever!
Is mr eydea aganst music videos? I love this album. E & A is the best!!!!!!!!!!!
this is probably one of the best songs known to man even better than the song with saturday morning soundtrack
dude chillin on the left...... just drawing his bearded ass off. like, who the hell is that guy and what the hell is he just drawing on the stage for? xD awesome.
Jankst3r painting watercolor of the band
I just started listening to Eyedea && Abilities and honestly, i can already classify em as brilliant!!
GENIUS!
Too bad i'll never be able to see Eyedea at a concert, Rest In Paradise♥♥
what did he die from anyways???
OD unfortunately.
Forever
@Bigbadaswolf i watched this video like a 100 times (literally) and i never saw that! well i still can't see tears but in the end he is rubbing his eyes in a manner that indicates tears.
crazy he was pretty much reaching out in this song, you can hear it in his voice he is pissed off at what addiction does
Yes he was I always respect a girl that listens to eyedea
@sheeple444 this album. i can't describe how good it is. i will just stop here
rip eyedea
R.I.P. You will live on.
Eyedeas never die
All about the Jameson's Whiskey, and Abilities knows this!!
@SoVertiginous
He's the guy that did all the album art. He's drawing the two of them (E&A) as they perform.
so how do i check out this water colored painting
+tylerzwhatz its just the album cover
nah it wasnt, there actually was a watercolor painting of eyedea . I found it so its good
tylerzwhatz oh ok thanks for telling me
***** I dont think anymore
The one for the video for Chemical Burns on youtube?
Was eyedea hitting a bottle of wine at the opening of this video
Right? It looks like abilities was pulling from a bottle of Jameson too. Could be the same bottle
It was jameson
fuck, i wish i could write music this amazing ! R.EYE.P
Eyedea huzur içinde yat
awesome video!
Ahhhhghgg. Bad habits make for good memories. Geniuses die young.
abilities is such a perfect producer name for him
R.EYE.P.
@iOpacity he just got older, his health wasn't degrading around his death. maybe the week he died youcould tell. but you try sleeping MAYBE as half as much as the rest of the world. his meds mixed with alcohol, mixed with passing out face down on your tempurpedic bed. he wasn't a drug addict (maybe pharmaceudical, but prescribed)
Glad they didn't end up putting the 'Kill the king' in the main song.
I like appreciating the beat.
ever goin to release the full show??????
I'm from the future, no
that was sick
Yeah I just bought the CD....but I obviously fucked up when I didn't see these guys when they were in Chicago. Don't let it happen to you!! This is extra nice.
The greatest duo since Hit or Miss girl and Tiktok
So sad R.I.P EYEDEA
Come back.
its about the many unpleasurable forms of addiction
i just found out about theses guys and i can't stop listening to them... but how did he die?
I was so pissed when I read the write ups on the new album because I think it kicks mofo ass. Looking forward to seeing you live next friday. Ft Lauderdale will surely love you.
peace
U really knew. Damn so sad. It's their best record IMO
