i went to the same high school as eyedea (i’m class of 2016 tho) and teachers would still reminisce on him hanging in the back of the class rapping and writing verses. he told everyone he was going to be a famous rapper one day. R.EYE.P.
I was fortunate to grow up with mike and watching him breakdancing drawing and rappin as a youngster you could just tell he was fully into the art. Manz was heavily focused on just being better and taking all the stuff he did higher. One thing i hope everyone would know is how nice and thoughful of a person he always was. I told him one of my younger coworkers was a big fan of his so we set up this thing where we surprsied him in an alley and it blew the kids mind lmao. Life sucks without mike fr and thats just facts.
Dope to know he was a bboy as well. Drawings? you mean graffiti? Brother embraced all elements. True hip hop. Teaming with dj abilities who is also Dope is dope
Don't sell *GLASS* short. If there's a more vulnerable, authentic, viscerally metaphoric confrontation of one's own drug addiction - "I'm gonna run from the voice of reason until it turns to laughter" "We keep our mirrors dirty/in case vanity backfires" "I'm so filthy/Sorry I had to see me like this" "Glad I had a chance to be so helpless" lemme know (seriously, I wanna know!) Fantastic job my dude. No matter how many times I listen, Eyedea remains shockingly brilliant. The level of self-awareness and empathy he achieved by the age of 28 is more than most people achieve in several incarnations. 💜💜💜

After my first listen to Aesop Rock’s The Impossible Kid I was elated and sad. The sadness was due to the fact that we’d never get to see how and where Eyedea’s music and lyrics would evolve. RIP Michael Larsen Long Live Eyedea
Eyedea was/is an incredible human being. Not only from a musical standpoint either. The way he was able to break down the human thought process and make it digestible was crazy. Just listen to some of his interviews.
Eyedea changed my life starting in early middle school, until highschool, until now, nearly 2023. Mikey truly altered the course of my life, his voice and emotion got me right at my darkest times and keeps me gliding at my highest. Truly one of a kind. I rock stickers from a pack sent to me in 2012 from the old merch site after wrote them a letter and sent them the $5 I had on me. I will continue giving him praise for as long as I live. It's a lot to think about... but it was a different time then, especially in the underground scene and the raw freestyle days. He dominated those days and would have kept dominating today if he were still around. Very few artists, to me, have the staying power he has had. Now that I'm older his lyrics mean something new altogether to me, I wish the best for his family, friends, and fans for as long as we are all around. God damn I appreciate this dude so fucking much.
Minnesota Native here, and I still spread the gospel of Eyedea everytime I talk with people about the greats and hip hop in general. Mikey is truly a soul lost too soon. I saw him at a club when i was 15 or 16. I had to sneak in cause it was 18 or 21+. I forget. I talked to him after, telling him how i wish I had money for a CD and he literally just gave me one and said, "Just listen to it and make some art". And I STILL do that. Eyedea is truly an incredible and genuine soul that deserved longer in this world.
I was there when he won at Rocksteady Anniversary (wasn't that '99?). He did this thing where he walked around his opponent with the mic lead while spitting bars and slowly tied him up so he couldn't move. i couldn't believe what I was seeing. One of the greatest feats of improvisation I have ever seen. RIP, young man.
Eyedea will forever be one of my fave rappers. Definitely in my top 5. This guy could do it all. The many faces of oliver hart is my favorite album. Mad respect to DJ abilities as well, super dope!
Best to ever do it, the world is a colder place without Eyedea. I’m part of the new generation of fans that found him post death.. I was 10 and never had even heard of him when he died. Now I’m 23 and he’s saved me more times than I can count. Thank you Mikey 💚 ReyeP
Thanks for spreading the word on Eyedea. Wish he got more recognition. Dude was hands down one of the greatest battle rappers pre-KOTD and then had an insane four album run, culminating in one of the most unique sounds in hiphop on By the Throat. His voice and lyricism were incredibly unique and his thematic choices were ahead of their time. Dude is a legend and Abilities deserves a huge amount of credit as well. R.EYE.P.
Eyedea fundementaly changed the way I see the world. I got to meet him a few months before he passed and he was such a genuinely kind person. The world would be a better place if he were still here. R.EYE.P.
Even shadows have shadows is one of the greatest hiphop tracks of all time! Eyedea is a legend and I'm grateful for having met him, he was mad chill and he signed his autograph for me and it's one of my treasured possessions. RIP legend
Eyedea is the biggest inspiration I've ever had in my life, started writing poetry because of him. Carbon Carousel is pretty much Alternative Rock/Post-Hardcore type stuff. It's rare when someone who started in hip-hop does something in this vein that is good, Carbon Carousel actually fucking slaps, now I'll be honest most people would think that Mikey isn't the greatest singer, but the way he sings adds so much emotionality and charm to the music, pulls you in so hard.
Im sooo happy someone did a documentary on him, not to many people seem to know about eyedea sadly. his music was beautiful, on tracks like smile, he talks about the worlds problems and even hints at his own all from a non-biased view through the lense of acceptance, on tracks like the dive part 1 and two (my personal favorite songs), he speaks on his descent into expected madness but turns out to not actually be insane, he's just become disillusioned with the worlds lies and also interested in the universes mysteries. he starts doubting his sanity because the deeper in he goes, the further away he feels from society and begins to feel crazy, but then he just lets go and begins to shift into a new, introspective and self aware perspective, this song is important to me because the exact same thing happened in my life after a lot of bad luck in various events resulting in me questioning things and eventually thinking i was losing it, i had almost every single thought eyedea discussed in the song, and after listening it, it gave me more insight on what was going on with me and i ended up letting go myself over time bc i now had that as a goal and it got me through a lot which in turn has made me feel more like myself again. eyedeas songs are beyond just being songs, he has purposefully put messages in his songs in a way that actually gives you insight on problems that you want to avoid or dont understand fully and i know for a fact his music has helped several people bc of my own experiences and also every single comment section on every eyedea song. rest easy eyedea, you may be gone but not forgotten.
eyedea deserves to still be here blessing us with his talent and artistry. the fact that im still breathing and taking this world in makes me grateful and i cant take any day for granted. RIP MIKEY
I met him and Brother Ali after the concerts when they were selling and signing their records and whatever, in maybe 2005 I think. I hadnt heard these masters of the art-form called rap before, but especially Eyedea And Abillites was,, wow, amazing, banging beats, I could hear his extreme lyrical abillities, but ofc its a lot to take in at a concert in such a huge festival as Hultsfred in Sweden back then, now we basically have no festivals as these nowadays. I remember Brother Ali helping me to literally take the plastic off the cd-cases of his both albums that he had at the time there that I got. Such a nice guy, and I posed in a photo with him and some other dudes there, but I never got to see this photo . .. ever :( . I didnt interact with Eyedea as much, but i distinctively remember that some fan REALLY REALLY wanted to have Eyedeas absolutely drenched in sweat SOAKED t-shirt he wore during his previous concert we all saw.. haha. He threw it away towards them, I think he smiled haha.. Eyedea is such an idol for me, I can connect so much to his metaphors ,lyrics, songs,oh yeah I bought from him after the concert in 2005-ish The Oliver Hart-album and Eyedea And Abillites-cd as well then. ..so sad.. so sad he aint alive today. :(. I thought my unique small slice of time story would be a nice thing to add here.. I treasure the moments in life, we can never go back to, get again..I truly do.. I was a young man then, now Im 38... *sighs*
Nice job, Def. I got to film an interview with him at Rock The Bells in Maryland in July 2009 for UGHH. He seemed like a genuinely good guy and the interview is WILD (available here on UA-cam). I can't imagine what a toll his death took on the Rhymesayers Entertainment crew. RIP Mikey.
Thank you for NOT letting his legacy die out. I remember when the blaze battle was televised on HBO I think! I just started rapping, and when I heard this guy and how he was so unconventional, I realize how diverse and beautiful hip-hop was! So inclusive as long as you have the skills!
I know that I'll catch shit for this but Eyedea is a huge reason why I don't censor myself. I hate, hate, that he's gone. But I'm happy that he just went to sleep. RIP Eyedea. Long live RhymeSayers.
I stumbled on this video as I was remembering the good times and the good vibes of my youth, banging some Eyedea raps. In the early 2k my friend called me from a train in the Fresno area and said he was sitting with Eyedea! My friend said that they were shooting the shit when he realized who he was. He was not familiar with his music but he knew that I was a fan. He called me and said he was with him and I didn’t believe it. I said if it’s really him then put him on the phone! I put it on speaker and said freestyle! He just started to freestyle, and as a fan I knew it was him. He destroyed! Just a cool memory I have and I wanted to share it with other fans. His music really helped me, and I will never forget that night. RIP Michael you were a true talent and are loved and missed.
It is really rare to have a devastating battle rapper who can also bring a solid concept and delivery to an album. His run was too short, I wish we could have seen him develop even further. His style was so unique for the times and there was so much he had to offer but sometimes the pain is just too much to bear so we seek an escape. RIP Mikey you accomplished more than you ever imagined and affected many lives along the way.
Mikey will forever live on through his music and continue to speak volumes to people who have never met him. Thank for you everything you left with us. R. EYE. P.
I met him in Ann Arbor a cpl months before he died. It was a small show with doseone. Those guys played for 4 hours straight. Mikey sold his own merch, and hung out with me for like 20 minutes. It was weird cuz he seemed really sad
He didn’t sell his soul to signing to Diddy. God knows what kind of rituals he would’ve had to partake in and he didn’t want any part of it. Respect to One of the greatest too ever do it.
A man whose soul was searching for something the body just couldn’t find. Hope he continues to get the recognition he deserves. Like early early Eminem with even better punch lines and instead of being the type of artist that needed to tear everyone down to make himself feel like king, he wanted to help build and improve with all those around him. Nothing but respect for that kind of artist, let alone human being
I remember heading Eyedea one day. And I was blown away. Than I heard nothing from him. I heard one song and I regret not diving deeper dude was amazing. one of the greatest
Man Eyedea is amazing. I love his work, he was a master lyricist and a real artist. Thank you for making this video, more people need to hear the music fr
Thanks for spreading the word. It's good to know other people out there still remember this legend. More people need to know about the beautiful art he's made. I personally found him from my father, who still plays his songs to this day when we drive around. Whenever I listen to his songs too much, there's always another hidden gem just around the corner, waiting for the love it desperately needs from the public. It's sad that he's gone, but we should all appreciate the time that we shared with him in this world, and the legacy he left behind. R EYE P o7
BTT was the 1st time I was introduced to E&A by a good friend of mine who sadly passed away himself a couple years back! "JUNK" gets high volume play everytime I heard it in their memory!!!!!! R.I.P. EYEDEA/R.I.P. JOEY HEDGES
Dope work putting this together! I remember seeting this kid perform at scribble jam and being fucking amazed standing there with the rest of the crowd. Also remember slug walking around selling his CDs before anyone really knew who he was. Im pretty sure sage francis was there as well performing on the indoor stage at one point. Some of the most talented emcees, b-boys, and graffiti artists anyone had ever seen. The experience was very surreal as nothing like it existed. So many cool cats and just awesome shit everywhere.
When I listen to Even Shadows Have Shadows, it feels so much like he's shouting for help. His music was amazing and I hope he lives on in the rap scene, influencing great music. Reincarnated as rain, as he would say.
Great video! I've always been torn when it comes down to my favorite Eyedea songs. But, the guy knew pain like all of us. That said, I think "Smile" or "Here For You" really hit home for me when things get low.
The rock album is very interesting, as a long life rock fan I can catch on a lot of influences, mainly 90 alternative, grunge, doom metal, noise rock, punk, shoegaze, experimental rock, I think one of the eyedea pros is that he use his rap origins to make some interesting vocal patterns that no other rock band at the time did
I'm thrilled he still gets a lot of new fans. As much as they love his work, if only they could have seen him as a person. He was an amazing listener. When you talked to him, it was like you were the only person in the world. I have never met anyone else who had his skills for making people feel seen. I still try and emulate them, every day, and always will.
Thanks for making this. Never seen a good video on eyedea like this one. Never got to see him live only got to see dj abilities with slug years ago in Pomona
Amazing documentary! I never knew he break danced, could have signed with p diddy, or that he made a rock cd. Also this inspired me to look into more of his music. Check out these two songs if you don't know them. Michael is directly about Sadistik losing his friend, and became is a metaphor which I think is about Atmospheres view of addiction, which may be about Eyedea. Two amazing songs by my two MOST favorite artists which are both just as talented as Eyedea. I don't want to rank them but all three of them are amazing, so I hope this great documentary and this comment helps bring some attention to a few rappers that most definitely deserve it. Michael - Sadistik Became - Atmosphere
eyedea is my number one fav rapper of all time, not enough is spoken about eyedea, the greatest rapper to ever grace this earth, he taught me how to really make love with music, he taught me how to save lives and make people laugh at the same time, eyedea is the man and the goat. rap battle god destroyed every single rapper that tried to battle him, his album by the throat is a master piece and will always be my desert island no 1 choice
I had the privilege and honour to meet Michael in 2010 just weeks before his passing. He was friendly down to earth and very personable. We hung out had cigarette and talk about life before his show in Toronto. RIP brother ❤❤❤
Thank you for making this! I went to what must have been a very early Face Candy show back in the early 2000's, but I never knew the name of the group, just E&A. After almost 20 years, I can finally relive that show.
Always a pleasant surprise when I see Eyedea get brought up. Got to see his star at 1st Ave a few months ago. Felt good to just feel his energy and be there. But, wish I wasn't so young when he was performing. I was and still am a big fan but, never got a chance to see him live. He's by far my favorite rapper. He inspired me to get into freestyling myself. Few rappers have had such an impact in my life as Eyedea. R.Eye.P.
Holy moly :0 finally someone’s made a new video on this magnificent man . Rip eyedea :,) I went to the opening documentary on him in 2016.. met sadistik and got my eyedea omaj book signed by em . Oh yeah and carnage was there lol me and him were trying to get a taco
My favorite artist. Just discovered your channel and was surprised to see an eyedea video on here after I binged thru a couple on Griselda. Highly recommend checking out Deca if you’ve never heard of him
I miss Mikey, I still watch those last few videos that came out right before he died, and it was so clear he was struggling. I'm really glad I was able to see him live, it was one of the best performances I have even seen.
Color the world mine has to be my favorite eyedea track. It's so visual and deep. I'll never forget the first time me and my best friend listened to first born. RiP Mikey!
Thank you so much for making this Eyedea is eternally etched into the deepest parts of my heart and soul! I’m in love with everything he did I love you Mikey; Happy Birthday
Eyedea also had a pothomous verse on Sadistik's album Ultraviolet and they said it was the last verse that he has ever written you should also checkout Sadistik he was very close with Eyedea also his style his very dark and original
I don't want to say Sadistik has filled Eyedeas shoes, but he kinda has in a way. Or a better way to say this. Point is, I hear Eyedea in every Sadistik album and hasn't let his Eydea die.
this was amazing !I was very fortunate to be well acquainted with mickey.i used to battle as Propane and fought him at scribble for the first of several times rest in lyrics, as you will live through them forever!
Eyedea saved my life and is still my personal #1 rapper of all time. And I appreciate you for keeping him alive.
Me too man.
@@gonfreecs-uu7id I was lucky enough to meet him at an Atmosphere show and he will always be my #1 too.
He saved the life of a suicidal teen (me) 28 now and I still feel like eyedea deserves my thanks ❤
Listening to his lyrics on powdered fish and what not made me feel like I wasn’t crazy
“I’m here for you, all you gotta do is ask man”
"Eyedea won every battle, we should've built him a statue."

The many faces of Oliver Hart is one of the most creative, deep, hip hop albums of all time. I still crave listening to it.
I just ordered my son the 2014 record store day 3x vinyl oliver hart album..
Don't sell *GLASS* short. We're all born into this river without knowing how to swim
And eventually we learn how to keep the water under our chin
Sometimes this river is so cold to be in
Freezing my soul solidifying my skin

Nothing but respect for that kind of artist, let alone human being
I needed this documentary, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Man…. Every video is amazing but this one is definitely one of my favourites so far. RIP to a legend ❤
My favourites by this Legend have to be Color My World Mine, How Much Do You Pay? & Powdered Water (Sixth Sense)
Declined a deal with Pdiddy. Good man
Thanks for giving Eyedea his due recognition. He was one of the greats in Hip Hop history.
I miss Eyedea man I’ve been a fan for a long time and always have loved his style and music. He was one of a kind and had so much talent. RIP
Here for you is one of my fav songs by Eyedea also man vs ape
I'm a simple creature. I see Eyedea in the title, I watch.
Thanx for this vid, my GF is mad cuz I'm up watching your vids and practice rap
Om my god I'm soooo grateful for this and its about time him gets the love and recognition he truly deserves!!!!!
Check me out!
R EYE P o7
No joke dawg my fav rapper who’s ever walked this earth, so glad he’s still getting talked about
BTT was the 1st time I was introduced to E&A by a good friend of mine who sadly passed away himself a couple years back! "JUNK" gets high volume play everytime I heard it in their memory!!!!!! R.I.P. EYEDEA/R.I.P. JOEY HEDGES
Listening to him got me through a lot of shit in life man. Rip Eyedea !
'Flicker' by Atmosphere is a great tribute to Mikey
Dope work putting this together! I remember seeting this kid perform at scribble jam and being fucking amazed standing there with the rest of the crowd. Also remember slug walking around selling his CDs before anyone really knew who he was. Im pretty sure sage francis was there as well performing on the indoor stage at one point. Some of the most talented emcees, b-boys, and graffiti artists anyone had ever seen. The experience was very surreal as nothing like it existed. So many cool cats and just awesome shit everywhere.
EYEDEA IS ALIVE!
That said, I think "Smile" or "Here For You" really hit home for me when things get low.
if you look up to the sky and see your own reflection, you know you're headed in the write direction
ICON.. I feel so lucky to have gotten to see him perform. I'll hang onto those signed albums forever
Eyedea was so dope! First Born is a classic! Still miss eyedea to this day.
It always hurts my heart to think of abilities without eyedea
Most underrated gifted rappers true legend real recognize real crazy people take notice even this long after his releases and death goes to show 🔥
Favorite eyedea song by far Even Shadows Have Shadows
The rock album is very interesting, as a long life rock fan I can catch on a lot of influences, mainly 90 alternative, grunge, doom metal, noise rock, punk, shoegaze, experimental rock, I think one of the eyedea pros is that he use his rap origins to make some interesting vocal patterns that no other rock band at the time did
Well said!
Let's gooooo, a new def Goldbloom video!!
Eyedea forever 👑
I'm thrilled he still gets a lot of new fans. As much as they love his work, if only they could have seen him as a person. He was an amazing listener. When you talked to him, it was like you were the only person in the world. I have never met anyone else who had his skills for making people feel seen. I still try and emulate them, every day, and always will.
Thanks for making this. Never seen a good video on eyedea like this one. Never got to see him live only got to see dj abilities with slug years ago in Pomona
Glad you enjoyed!
Michael - Sadistik
Became - Atmosphere
Thanks for making this video. 🤙🏼
Respect for making this documentary. Incredible stuff.
Thanks!!
eyedea is my number one fav rapper of all time, not enough is spoken about eyedea, the greatest rapper to ever grace this earth, he taught me how to really make love with music, he taught me how to save lives and make people laugh at the same time, eyedea is the man and the goat.
rap battle god destroyed every single rapper that tried to battle him, his album by the throat is a master piece and will always be my desert island no 1 choice
I had the privilege and honour to meet Michael in 2010 just weeks before his passing. He was friendly down to earth and very personable. We hung out had cigarette and talk about life before his show in Toronto. RIP brother ❤❤❤
Thanks for this. I remember back in the day Eyedea changed perspective on Hiphop. I even got to see them live for the E & A tour. RIP Eyedea
Even Shadows Have Shadows is the song that really connected with me and the world around me. Top 10 greatest Hip Hop songs ever.
1:42 Happy That He Did Not Sign To Bad Boy, Eyedea Would've Been Added To The List Of Artists That Puff Screwed Over
Thank you for making this!
Rip eyedea :,)
I went to the opening documentary on him in 2016.. met sadistik and got my eyedea omaj book signed by em . Oh yeah and carnage was there lol me and him were trying to get a taco
Best battle rapper, rapper emcee lyricist to have ever lived
Thank you for making this video.
I’ll just smile.
And be “here for you”.
My favorite artist. Just discovered your channel and was surprised to see an eyedea video on here after I binged thru a couple on Griselda. Highly recommend checking out Deca if you’ve never heard of him
Deca is dope!!
Ty so much for this 🙏 from a fan that watched all of this. Drank beers with Mikey
One of the best ever. Killed battle rap. Wish his mainstream career had a chance at longevity
I miss Mikey, I still watch those last few videos that came out right before he died, and it was so clear he was struggling. I'm really glad I was able to see him live, it was one of the best performances I have even seen.
Eyedea rejecting P Diddy is the hardest thing that has ever happened. Eyedea must have knew he was a shitty person.
"The World Has No Eyedea" is a must for any fan
Absolutely!
Color the world mine has to be my favorite eyedea track. It's so visual and deep. I'll never forget the first time me and my best friend listened to first born. RiP Mikey!
The culture needs this channel thank you
Amazing dope he mcs wordplay nice Rest peace Eyedea. And Lyrical rapper and rap battle Freestyle
By The Throat, the song and the album are my favorites
Thank you so much for making this
Eyedea is eternally etched into the deepest parts of my heart and soul!
I’m in love with everything he did
I love you Mikey; Happy Birthday
Not enough love is given to Eyedea. This man changed my entire approach to hip-hop, and I was devastated the day he died.
His music lives on.
Eyedea also had a pothomous verse on Sadistik's album Ultraviolet and they said it was the last verse that he has ever written you should also checkout Sadistik he was very close with Eyedea also his style his very dark and original
Chemical Burns
I don't want to say Sadistik has filled Eyedeas shoes, but he kinda has in a way. Or a better way to say this. Point is, I hear Eyedea in every Sadistik album and hasn't let his Eydea die.
@@Magdalena8008s i feel you, he has done so more so in a since to sacredly carry his name forward.
