I'm between a 3 and a 4 and lately went back to 4 but with a thin grip and overgrip for slightly larger feeling bevels. The wrist flexion for me on serve definitely suffers slightly if it's too big a grip but everything else feels nice..
7 or 8 years ago I broke a string on two of my 5/8 racquets during a match, I borrowed one of my wife’s racquets to finish the match it was the same racquet as mine but a 1/4. I have never switched back. All of my racquets since that day have been 1/4’s. The amount of spin on both my serve and ground strokes have increased. And the pop I get on my serve has increased. I played years of racquetball and the 1/4 grip reminds me of the pop and maneuverability that I got with a racquetball racquet. I am a 4.0/4.5 player, 6’4”, with solid fundamentals, and I think the smaller grip allows me to play with a more relaxed grip and wrist. I have never had an arm or shoulder injury, in 24 years of fairly serious tennis.
Guga Kuerten used to play with a L1 (4 1/8) grip. It is very small, but he put 3 overgrips on it just to be more comfortable. It depends a lot of the sensation you are searching in the grip.
I’m 6’2 big hands and love using the smaller 4 1/4. I’ve always used the 4 3/8 but there was a racquet I wanted that I could only get with the 4 1/4 grip. I feel I have more control & thankful haven’t dealt with any wrist elbow injuries going down a size. Also worse comes to worse with a smaller grip size just put heat shrink sleeve on racquet.
I am 5'9 after so many years of playing tennis, I switch to 4 1/8 which is most comfortable to me and I can swing freely to whip fast top spin and I slice a lot on my backhand. I find it's much easier to use smaller grip if you take last minute shot using ' squash shot' if you are late to reach the ball.
@@waynenergy 5'9" here as well, switching to 4 1/8 felt great. Given that 4 1/8 is usually the smallest that is readily available, I wonder what average sized women do when they want a smaller grip.
@@PaulWolfe1 There are some woman racket or lighter racket, there is size 0 but very hardly you see this size in the shop. The shop owner usually do not want to carry this sizes as its not easy to sell
@@waynenergy Well I think that leaves a LOT of women out there using grips that are too large. I suppose demand will have to rise. Who knows, maybe even I would switch to Size 0. I know they talk about elbow issues with small grips, but that only makes sense if there's overlap when you grip the racquet (Nadal has overlap, though I think using a 2-handed backhand prevents most tennis elbow).
yep. I use 4 1/4 and put one grip tape over it and i have a lot better wrist action creating a lot more top spin and a lot more spin on my slice serve and drop shots. Trying to do that with a bigger grip hurts the wrist.
I know im asking randomly but does anyone know of a method to get back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid lost the password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me
@Jordan Elliot I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I have to mention a detail which maybe some players also noticed after a while.. your racket's grip actual gets smaller on the bottom half from usage.. I always choose a racket slightly thicker than I feel comfortable with, because you can see the difference after a while.. I am talking about the shaft itself.. not the grip around.. also can be adjusted with the overgrip to wind it thicker or thinner around the bottom half.. just wanted to mention
I think theres should be a balance where the grip size needs to be small enough to allow manuverability but large enough so that it wont slip and you dont feel the need to tightened your grip when swinging fast. Ive had some wrist pains using a smaller grip just beause i was unconsciously tightening my grip on powershots. By the way nadal can use smaller grips because he tapes his hands which helps with traction.
Hi Drew, I’ve been playing with an Aerogel 4D 200 Tour w/ 4 1/2” grip…..never had any arm issues. I just switched to an Aerogel 200 (16x19 version)….exact same 95 sq.” head size, same stiffness rating (63)….only difference is 1 ounce less and going down to 4 3/8” grip. With a little lighter frame and a little more maneuverability I am getting definitely more spin on the serve and a bit more power on the ground strokes. I need to also mention, I’ve been using synthetic gut in my 4D’s but the racquet I changed to is a multifilliment. I am VERY surprised at the amount of tingling and achy feeling now in my arm after playing. Perhaps this racquet is returning more vibration into the arm? Or another thing I thought is even with the slight change in grip size, different wrist and arm muscles are having to get to work and it is shocking to my arm? Any suggestions? I do not use vibration dampeners because I’d rather not have the muted feel, but may I should try them on this frame. At any rate, I love the performance and feeling of these older Dunlop frames. They are very solid and suit my game really well. Thanks, Rod
Fav grip is the Yonex size 3. I have to add 2 overgrips on my Prince 100p to get the same feel as on my Yonex. I just like what’s comfortable in the hand. Its interesting seeing what the Pro’s are trying though to gain an extra little advantage,
Glad I found you because I recently purchase a Yonex racket with a 4 1/4” but when I measure it it read 4 3/8” and that’s without the over grip with over grip it was 4 1/2” now I bought 4 1/4 “ because thats my grip question how can I get 4 1/4 or at least 4 3/8” with over grip.
Great comments. Traditional grip size may be too big and the smaller size trend can give greater control, top spin. Use what feels best is the right thing and don’t just use the traditional size measurement.
Im a transitioner from mature beginner to intermediate playinngm and i have been using a smaller grip than normal. But actually by mistake. I didnt know better. Now that i know, i think thats the reason for bad performance, my racket flies out of my habd at aome poiint. Maybe when tired of holding tight
I wonder if Nadal and Federer playing with smaller grips has any relevance for 3.5 - 4.0 players. It's getting kinda hard to find 4 5/8th grips now (and btw, went up and down the sizes way back in the day, but maybe rackets are whippier these days, I dunno)
as soon as he said NEIGH DAL I headed to the comments

It’s not the handle but rather the replacement grip ( if you change your new replacement grip , you will return to stock
Nadal and Federer are quite tall but they're not giants. They may also have small hands. So I don't know if they're the right example

4 5/8 since I was 10 years old, with sn over grip. Why have many manufacturers stopped making the 5?
Thank you for your video it was more than helpful

The problem with all those overgrips is you start losing the bevels.
I like the feeling of the rounder bevels. Makes my grip changes easier
Yup!

Well, in my personal eperience the smaller grips are better cause allow me to feel better the ball on the racquet strings hence you got more control.

I wonder what the reality is. How can a smaller grip increase wrist flexion?
Like always in life, choose the middle path.
1:20 5/8=.625 3/4=.75 smh

NAH DAL..not NAY DAL . AYDAM and EVE?

nay-doll?
Naydal...and the gratuitous 'look at me hit' intro. Please.
The only person I've heard pronounce "Nay-doll"..disgusting
You are sort of sensitive!!!
How to lose all credibility in one easy step: pronounce Rafa's name Nay-Dal. And then, just to be sure: say Frisco.
I stopped watching after you said Naydal lmao
