You are absolutely correct, getting one of these helmets to "fit" is going to take effort and time. These do not work like a motorcycle style helmet, where you adapt to the helmet. You MUST put in the time to make these helmets fit YOU, if you do not you will be in trouble when you have to wear them for any real length of time. Headaches, sore spots, and even actual bleeding sores on you melon and neck are not uncommon til you get the helmet fitted correctly. Even once the helmet does fit correctly, you have to spend time wearing it to strengthen your neck, back, and head so that you do not hurt from carrying the extra weight. Also the more gear you mount on the helmet the heavier it gets, requiring even more time to strengthen your muscles to carry that extra weight before it will become bearable much less comfortable. And those muscles must be maintained by constant practice / training or you will lose them, and be forced to start from scratch over and over again if you do not maintain them.
The reality is spending the money on a ballistic high cut helmet is it doesn’t really offer valuable protection because of the fact it only covers 2 major points of the skull. On the other hand the mich or pasgt offers full wrap around protection from shrapnel or rounds that will direct the force to the back of the helmet. High cut helmets are more just for accessories
I would steer away from bump helmets. They are NOT worth the price. I am in the marine corps as an aviation mechanic and we use team Wendy bump helmets as PPE. They are fragile as fuck. I’ve seen one break every 2 weeks from just pushing and pulling the ear pro out and in. If you’re going to buy something so fragile just buy a airsoft clone from FMA or TMC (preferably ops core) and you will get the same “bump” protection and quality for so much cheaper. Then you can even swap out the hardware for real ops core accessories and have a great bump helmet for cheap.

Awesome but now I'm wondering what is a good brand of ears to get that won't break the bank.
Hard head veterans sells them for a pretty good price. But definitely don’t recommend going cheap
I have carbon bump thing is super rigid I’d think it stops some shrapnel
