  • I have really enjoyed the Camelbak Apex Pro vest! It has great capacity, the included trekking pole quiver is amazing, and the built in RECCO Reflector is a nice touch! The Apex Pro is, in my opinion, the most comfortable Camelbak vest I have tried, and this is my 4th camelbak vest by the way.

    Another top tier review of another top tier product. Slightly annoying issue with the bottles but other than that the vest seems pretty decent. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences with us all Steven. 😎🤘

    Thank you for another great review. The breathability and the smaller front pockets make it a no-go for me. I went with the Rab Veil 12L and it's a great addition to my current herd of running vests. Cheers and thanks again.

      Had those in a pair of snowboarding pants. Didn't know how it worked, but as Steven said, SARS has to be equipped with the RECCO system and of course it's no substitute for a proper beaconing system.

    Seems like a solid vest that really thought things through. I like the idea of that rear phone pocket, keeping it secure and safe but still conveniently located. As for the soft flasks, seems like an opportunity to upgrade to the HydraPak UltraFlasks. Those front zippered pockets could be a tad bigger for those ultra long runs, but functional nontheless. Great review Steven!!!

    I've been using the Apex Pro for a month - I bought it as I wanted the integrated quiver. The top sternum strap has been replaced with an Inov8 one as I couldn't keep the elasticated strap tensioned, it constantly slipped and I ended up triple knotting it as short as I could get it. Replacing this with a solid one has meant the pack has stayed put on my shoulders when fully laden. I do like the lower strap being elasticated, as I'm not the slimmest of chaps! I have a size large and the pockets don't seem any bigger than you described - I have lost gels out of them, but then discovered the extra internal mesh that solved this. Additionally, a few of the pull tab elastics have snapped as the tab was where the elastics were joined. The whistle holder hasn't worked on a single run and it popped out and starts bouncing, so that has been removed. Despite the niggles, I find it far more comfortable than my Inov8 10L vest and will be using it on upcoming events. Agree - bottle bite valves are weird and at an odd angle for use with valve in the open position.

    Top tier review as always. I'm like a lot of others, i've got the Salomon Adv Skin 12 as well. I hear what you are saying about the zippers, but i'm on my 3rd Adv skin set (2 - Skin 5, 1 - Skin 12) and only my original 5 did the zippers fail on. But i had soooo many miles on that thing, it lasted 4 years and i mean, countless miles of ultras and long, long runs, i had zero issue with my zippers failing on that one. The last two have been fine and i run plenty of ultras and log plenty of mountain miles. I'm all for alternative options like the Camelback here, but this is just a clone from what i see. If you are going to copy something, the ADV line is what you should copy, 100%. But again, $180 for this on Amazon and the Adv Skin 12 for $130 and $120 routinely + $50 for the quiver, it's the same money in reality.
    And the Recco thing is a plus, why not. But who among us doesn't already own a Garmin InReach....?
    Again, great review and Camelback has made what looks like a legit product here, but just in my opinion, there's not much new here.

    • @UltraTrailSteven
      @UltraTrailSteven  4 місяці тому +2

      The overall design is similar or a clone to the Adv Skin, but the materials chosen are much different.
      The 2023 version of the Adv Skin 12 is $160-165. The older versions are available for cheaper, but don’t have that awesome “stash” pocket up top.
      I don’t have an In Reach, but remember the RECCO is not a PLB or device like that. It is only passive.
      Thanks for the thoughtful comment!

    • @pjskiboy
      @pjskiboy 4 місяці тому +1

      @@UltraTrailStevenTotally, all valid points. And i wasn't trying to dump on Camelback. The materials being recycled is a great feature and the RECCO just being a "free" added benefit is nice, but certainly doesn't do what the InReach does. My only point is i don't think it offers "enough" to move people from Salomon over to Camelback, but maybe I'm wrong.
      Also, something else i should have said in my original response was that you can't always find the Salomon quiver in stock. I've had mine forever, but every time i tell someone to spend the $ on it for their Adv Skin set, it's NEVER in stock. So there's that. I DO think Camelback is smart to include it with the kit from the onset.

    Most people just go for the Salomon Avd skin 12 vest. There are def other brands that offer great vests. Most types of runs you can get away with a vest with less storage options. Just got to find one that fits your needs. Good breakdown of this vest.

    Ultimate Direction Ultra vest 5.0 or the Camelbak Apex Pro? Which vest are you picking?

    • @UltraTrailSteven
      @UltraTrailSteven  4 місяці тому +2

      Hm... Probably the Camelbak Apex Pro. The included tekking pole quiver and RECCO reflector are nice! Plus those little front pockets on the UD vest on the outside of the flask pocket are pretty much worthless. They barely fit a gel.

      @Seanonyoutube 3 місяці тому +1

      @@UltraTrailSteven yes tightness/soreness like not pain but just super tight like shoulders DOMS. I think the proprioception of having a vest on me, causes me to tense up my shoulders when I run with it on.
      It’s an ADV 5 not even totally filled up so it’s not like heavy or anything…

    Had my Salomon Adv Skin 12 since Aug. Run with it less than 20 times and the zipper came off on a 59 mi run in the mountains. The fabric came unstitched at the top. I had already put three stitches in the top left. I was very disappointed. Fortunately they replaced under warranty but very disappointed in their quality. My Nathan Vapor Air 7L has held up and I’m even trying to sell, but it’s hot and not very comfortable with the piping. It’s hard to find something comfortable and durable. I think Salomon could do much more are reinforcing these issues. This is a common problem with their vests.

      @@UltraTrailSteven dude I tried an could not get it back on. It came off zipped up and I need the stuff out of the pocket. So I pulled the zipper apart and well... don't do that or you'll never get it to reattach. Fortunately Solomon honored the warranty even though I bout it from Backcountry on sale. Backcountry only had a red M on sale so I bought another for backup. Now I have two. LOL
