- The Dutch Antilles, which were a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea that were part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, played a role during World War II, primarily due to their strategic location and the importance of their oil refineries. The Dutch Antilles, particularly the islands of Aruba and Curaçao, had significant oil refineries. These refineries were important for the Allies because they could provide refined oil products for their war effort. Control over these refineries was crucial, as they could affect the supply of oil to both military and civilian sectors. At the beginning of World War II, the Netherlands declared themselves neutral, just like they had during World War I. However, this neutrality was challenged when Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands in May 1940. The Dutch Antilles were still under Dutch control, and their strategic significance made them potential targets for both Axis and Allied forces.
After the fall of the Netherlands, the Dutch Antilles came under the control of the Dutch government-in-exile, which had fled to London. This government maintained control over the islands and their resources, including the oil refineries. The Allies, particularly the United States, saw the importance of these refineries and established a presence on the islands to safeguard them. The United States established military bases and installations on Aruba and Curaçao to protect the oil refineries and ensure they remained operational. These bases included airfields and naval facilities. The islands' location in the Caribbean also allowed for increased patrols and anti-submarine operations in the region. The Caribbean Sea was a key area for submarine warfare during World War II. German U-boats targeted Allied shipping lanes, attempting to disrupt the flow of supplies to Europe. The Dutch Antilles' proximity to these shipping lanes meant that they were at risk of U-boat attacks. The Allies established a naval presence to counter this threat and protect their interests. The oil refineries on Aruba and Curaçao played a significant role in supplying the Allies with refined oil products. These products were essential for powering vehicles, aircraft, and machinery crucial to the war effort. The Dutch Antilles thus indirectly contributed to the success of the Allies. There is a small monument to the US servicemen who died on Curacao located at the US Consulate General in Willemstad and another at the US cemetery in the Blau Bai area. The USS Erie, a large patrol gunboat, was torpedoed by a U-Boat and beached with several dead US sailors. It was eventually towed to Willemstad for scrapping. Most of today's international airports in the Caribbean islands and countries bordering the Caribbean originated as US ferry or patrol bases.

My grandfather worked at the American refinery on Aruba for thirty years. I recall him telling me that a German sub lobbed a few shells from its deck gun but didn't hit anything important.
I was surprised this wasn't mentioned.
One of the German submarines started to shell one of the refineries using their main deck gun. Of course at night. For some reason, the breech plug blew out of the breech, creating a massive fireworks display on the deck and showing exactly where the sub was. The skipper hastily submerged, turned tail and ran. Not that I blame him. Being on the surface a mile or two off an enemy island, and having the deck gun inoperative is not a good place to be.
My Dad was there at that time and the rumor was they forgot to remove the muzzle plug.

Good video. I like these offbeat topics. Prior to WWII Venezuela was the world's largest oil *exporter* . By a lot. In 1928, Venezuela surpassed the US as the world’s largest oil exporter, and by 1936, it was exporting almost as much oil as the next seven exporters combined-the United States, Peru, Iran, Romania, the Dutch East Indies, Iraq, and the Soviet Union (43.05 million tons versus 44.39 million tons). Venezuela was Britain's largest supplier of oil; Venezuela’s market share rose from 17 per cent to 49 per cent during the 1930s. And Venezuelan oil was cheap. In 1932 the US imposed tariffs of Venezuelan oil that resulted in exports shifting from the US, where the majority of its output went, to Europe and elsewhere. Refineries were built in the Antilles instead of Venezuela for two reasons, one geographic and the other political. The port nearest Venezuela's oil fields was quite shallow. Smaller coastal tankers shuttled the oil to the Antilles for storage, refining, and onward shipment by deep-water tankers - it's more cost efficient to transport refined oil and many of its products than crude. Being under Dutch rule the risk of Shell's facilities being nationalised was low. On 1 Sep 1939 the Netherlands' merchant fleet was almost 2.7 million gross registered tons (1523 ships greater than 100 GRT) , about one-third the size of America's (the world's second largest), making it the world's seventh largest. 107 of these Dutch ships were oil tankers of 1000 GRT and larger for a total of 537,564 GRT. By both number and GRT, the Netherlands had the world's fourth largest fleet of oil tankers after the UK, US, and Norway. It was the Norwegian (262) and Dutch (107) oil tankers that proved vital to Britain in 1940 and 1941.

U-Boats operated in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Although it would have been at the limits of their patrol range.

SS Pedernales was a tanker that was torpedoed by a Gernan U-boat off Aruba on 16 February 1942. The damaged midsection was cut off, and the fore and aft ends reattached. The damaged midsection is now a well known diving spot on Aruba. There is not much to see there though, as sea currents have largely destroyed what as left of the midsection. The few chunks of metal on that location, don't even look like they once belonged to a ship.
SS Antilla was a German ship that was about to be captured by Dutch Marines, after The Netherlands was invaded by Germany in 1939. If the capture was successful, SS Antilla was to become the first war prize taken from Germany. The ship's crew managed to scuttle the ship though, and it still lies off the coast of Aruba at Malmok. Part of the structure can be seen from the shore, and contrary to SS Perdernales, it's the largest and best preserved diving wreck in the Carribbean.
My father was actually walking two of her nieces (I wasn't born yet) at Corredor in Curacao, and a German torpedo hit ground and exploded not far from where they were walking. A ship, possibly a tanker, was hit while they were enjoying their walk, and one of the stray torpedoes hit the beach close to where my Dad was walking his nieces.
In one of my History Books there was also a picture of a German stray torpedo on an Aruban Beach, with 2-3 US Servicemen standing over it.
I actually went to school with Boy Ecury's nephew. He was named after his Uncle. Boy Ecury was from Aruba btw.

I'm sure you know that the Japanese Invasion Force destined for Australia was destroyed at the Battle of the Coral Sea.
After the example of Manchuria and other places, they were most unwanted.

Curaçao & Surinam also played a very important but understated role as a destination point for Lithuanian and Polish Jews during ww2. The Dutch Honorary Consul and Chiune Sugihara issued these visas transiting through Japan. You can Google the story by the Japanese diplomat’s name. The Dutch Antilles saved many Jewish lives, even if most ultimately went to other places. Thanks for your video!

Maduro family is from portuguese descent. They are sephardic jewish. The family went to the Netherlands after the expulsion of the jews in the 16th century. It is interesting that Portugal has a small park like the Madurodam, it is 'Portugal for kids' (Portugal dos Pequenitos) in Coimbra made in the 60s of the last century. It is different from Madurodam, because the buildings are bigger and share some building materials with the real monuments and buildings (usually picturesque houses from the different regions of the country) that they represent. Only the kids can get inside and come to the window! It is like a cozy neighbourhood where the kids own their own houses!

Mt Dad and Cousin were on the ships in the harbor when the U-boat attacked and my cousin was sleeping on top of a fuel tanker and stold me he could the sailor on the deck of the U-boat firing the deck gun as they went by his ship.

At one point in the beginning of the war, the harbor of Wilemstad was guarded against U-boat attacks on her oil refineries and storage tanks by a lightly armed Dutch whaleboat. Curacao was also one of way points for escaping Jews from Lithuania, initially aided by the humane and heroic Japanese ambassador, Chiune Sugihara who provided thousands of exit visas for the Jewish refugees.

The US took 200,000 Italians and 300,000 Germans as prisoners during WWII... nearly all were civilians and lived outside of Europe. Their properties were confiscated and most were deported as slave labor after the war. Not a word on this injustice has ever been uttered in the US government and media and this story remains unknown to nearly all of our citizens...
