  • Matt Waldman of the Rookie Scouting Portfolio joins the Big Blue Banter podcast to break down the offensive players in the 2024 NFL Draft. They break down why Matt is higher than consensus on QB Michael Penix, lower than consensus on QB Drake Maye and how he feels about the Giants’ pre-draft connection to J.J. McCarthy. They transition to RB with the one prospect he has as RB1 but whether or not he fits the current Giants roster rebuild. Also, Matt discusses the best processing backs in the class and some underrated targets for the Giants on Day 3. Finally, they talk WRs - the big three, who Waldman’s WR4 is, and some sleepers as well for the Giants to consider on Day 3.

    Very much appreciate the "shout out". I only wish that we actually had even the smallest impact on what the Giant's ultimately do. For me, I'm fairly certain that the Giant's will not draft Penix at #6, but for reasons not having anything to do with his talent. Having said that, I am fine with Daboll getting his hands on any of theses top guys. Fingers crossed.

    Really like Matts perspective on the class and how different it is. Richardson over Caleb is insane to me but I like his insight and I hope he is right if Penix winds up a Giant cause im lower on him.

    That's why I said that all of these QBs need to sit for a year or two to get the understanding of NFL football speed and intensity of defenders and defensive coordinators game planning, learning how to watch tape...let them run scout team as they show progress and at end of season pick the game where they'll start to get the actual feel of the action... Let him self-scout and if he passes the criteria that's been set, then they start preparing him to be the starting QB.

    Did Drake Maye sound frighteningly like Daniel Jones to anyone?

    • @johnblaze5252
      @johnblaze5252 10 місяців тому

      No. We're you frightened when he won a playoff game on the road in 22? Mitch Trubisky is a better comp. Tommy Cutlets had more wins than Bryce Young & Anthony Richardson combined last year with a 🐶💩 roster & no weapons of note.

      Tough for me to say ANY Daniel Jones in Drake Maye even if the processing needs work when you actually watch the two, so I would suggest you rewatch. Maye's arm talent is in a completely different caliber than Jones'. He can make throws from diff platforms w/ velocity, diff arm slots, he gets a lot more velocity to stick the tight window throws and his downfield throwing has more power, less touch (though both use a lot of touch/trajectory). Maye, while not great at maneuvering UP into a pocket (as Matt pointed out), has the ability to create DOWN THE FIELD after moving up and out of a pocket b/c he's great at keeping his eyes downfield -- DJ has struggled his entire career with this -- his eyes typically go to the sticks or he runs with it.

      How can anyone watch tape on all these guys & say Penix isn’t better than both ? Lmao bigger arm than both & way more accurate than both & anticipates way better & just flat out way more arm Talent . Tape doesn’t lie

    • @RacerXdBrother
      @RacerXdBrother 10 місяців тому +1

      @@MrHumble22 I'm not talking about measurable analytics. Penix does not physically appear to me to be a long time starter or champion QB in any way, similar to my assessment of Zach Wilson. The beauty of QB evaluation is that the most important factor is what we "can't" measure, Montana and Eli Manning are two of the best examples of that. The eye test showed traits beyond measurements. We'll see, if I'm wrong I'll be the first to admit it.

      @@RacerXdBrother I’m talking about measurable analytics tho lol I’m talking about tools , arm talent & playing the QB position in general . Tell me in what ways does Penix & Zach Wilson belong in the same sentence ? & what doesn’t Penix do for you as far as “ eye test “ I really wanna know

      @@KS-lg2qy McCarthy def a system QB but Maye is no where near Josh Allen lol like not even in the same ball park , doesn’t have half the arm strength or athleticism . Maye is a better Daniel jones with a slightly bigger arm .
