Go karting on abandoned railroad tracks! Homemade train with dog

Last summer, I built this wooden rail go kart from scratch. It's powered by a 8HP 'motorised cultivator' briggs and stratton engine. It can go up to 50km/h (31mph), the speed is not limited by the engine but by the weakness of the wooden base. (it starts vibrating quite a lot around 50 km/h).
The 20km long railroad track has been abandoned for more than 10 years and is quite steep for a railroad. The maximum steepness is 20mm/m (2%) but it is often close to 10mm/m (1.5%)
Fun fact:
The last train that drove on this railroad never got to the train station, as the modern passenger train got stuck on the 20mm/m part of the tracks because of the wheels losing grip!
Summary:
0-24sec == Quick view of the railcart
24-52sec == A ride with my dog
52-1min34 == My dog running behind the cart (No abuse, he loved doing it, if he was on it he would constanly try to get off so he could run)
1min34-end == A ride from my home to the end of the track

Unfortunately, some people destroyed it and stole the valuable parts, there is not much left of it, only the wooden base and the seats

Now you just need a set of those big train airhorns mounted on the front. It would bring back memories for the neighbours.
Daniel Moses not airhorns,whistles!
I was going to comment same.
Actually I mounted a car horn, it was quite loud but not loud enough to piss of the neighbours ;)
bells, whistles and horns.. lol
How about a replica vintage Paris taxi horn ? The type used in performances of " An American in Paris " . Rubber squeeze bulb , brass horn .Hello from Texas military veteran
here's a scenario
it's a calm day in august and someone is driving through town and they come to a railroad crossing and the lights are blinking so they wait expecting to see a train only to then see some guy on a go cart
timberjack460 i would laugh my ass off if that happened to me
Yeah I would completely cheer him on on the way by LOL
@@LetoPartizan lol same
That would be hilarious, but it probably would not work since it would not be heavy enough.
This cracked me up so bad
dog needs an enginers cap
Would look cool
lol
that would be exceptionally cute it would look amazing on him
Every adventure is better with a dog.
When I was 13 I had a go-cart and one day driving around the dogs got out and I thought the Chihuahua (Patches) was going to run away but instead he ran and jumped on the go-cart and from that day forward anytime I went to drive it patches was with me and we got him a leather pilots cap lol he was the best dog ever.... watching this video reminded me of it.
Nothing can beat the rails and man and his dog

The Stroudley Productions #savethennet except a train
@eclemensen when he slammed on the brakes the dog stoped so fast ,,,,,he had an a hole ring around his neck 😂
Yuh quick question.. wtf is is your pfp
Best way to walk the dog
*laziest :P
@@antoniojmonetti He DOES need some doggie booties if he's going to do this more than once !
@@rickobrien4025 People who put boots on their dogs belong in jail.
@@squidiz496 Yeah, ok. Sent to jail because they want to protect their dog’s paw pads from injury. Yeah, what horrible people would do that? Dumbass.
@@KrysDlite It was a joke buddy I don't give two shits if you put boots on your dog lol.
Inse: That is the coolest thing I've seen in a very long time. Totally captures a boyish sense of freedom and wonder. Very very cool.
What do you do if you suddenly see another homemade train cart coming right towards you?
Brake the hell out of it ;)
Did you ever encount another cart?
MrJD2you I don’t think anyone else would be doing something as crazy as this
Where's the horn?
Hustaakkeli put them together and keep going in the direction that the biggest one was traveling
There`s loads of abandoned lines like this where I live and I was just thinking about the possibility of making a trolley for them today, what a conincidence.
Did you made it yet?
@@loltrollmyboll4418 Alas no, I simply don`t have the necessary to do it.
What a beautiful ride! It's a pity and a shame about the people who destroyed your rail kart. I truly hope that you can build a new one, and keep enjoying your hobby!! Cheers!
Thank you! :D
You are so lucky to have this disused railway left intact! In so many places, they pull the rails... Riding a little rail-speeder has been my dream, ever since I was a child.
Looks like the dog is haven a blast
Dennis Brooks yes he was, indeed. Sometimes I didn't want him to come. But often he found a way to sneak out of the garden and come with me anyway!
This is just fascinating and beautiful to watch. I've lived in the California high desert my whole life, nothing but rolling hills of dry brush for miles and miles, but seeing you riding down the rails through all that forest, I can almost smell the autumn leaves and feel the slight chill of the wind blowing past.
Yo, Aldous Huxley, get off your duff and return to the wet!
this is just way to cool! guy and his dog and his rail cart, this is for sure one of the best videos on youtube.
forget hyperloop, this is the transport of the future
Thanks for the ride! Reminds me of the time I was going to build one from the go-cart my dad made for me & my brother. We both grew up, went our own ways, got married & all but forgot about that go-cart. I'm too old now & both the tracks & my dad are gone. I still get the urge now & then when I walk the path where the tracks used to be. It's now called the IRONTON RAIL TRAIL here in Whitehall Penna.
Thank you for the comment! Some touching text you wrote there. Makes me realise how lucky I've been to be able to do this.
Simply wonderful. Mankind should understand that there is nothing safer and better to reach every single part of the world than trails.
Very cool, and dogs are just too cool. They will do anything just to hang out and he looked like he was really enjoying the ride!
THIS... is 'bucket list' material! Awesome!
😄👍
Pretty amazing that the track is in good shape..no trees down ..
+Angela Mosee This trip was made after cleaning the tracks, there were loads of fallen trees!
I wish they would have left the old tracks here where I live. There were 4 towns connected on the same line about an hour each apart and I would have had a blast doing this. They dug the rails up in the early 90's though.
Mmh i don't understand why they have to rip up old railways it such awesome history and amazing construction and the
+KTM200 EXC Sadly they tear up the rails for scrap metal for the $$$$
Those rails would make for a good homemade roller coaster n the backyard.
People should buy my "Impact' a James Grider novel on Amazon so I can afford to move out of a desert area into a forested area like that near a railroad track and do this. Maybe I could write that James Grider clandestinely travels America on a thing like that on active rails illegally, but only during the dark. It would be droll to write that a train catches up from behind going slightly faster and starts pushing the cart ahead after the catcher bumps into it. The hero must then climb onto the locomotive because he senses danger. The second he leaves the go cart, the high speed derails it and it's gulped under the train, obliterated into splinters but the hero is safe clinging to the front of a locomotive. Same scenario could be done with one of those trucks that have train wheels.
Same here, there was a railroad that went through my home village in Slovenia right down to Italy. It would have been so damn fun!
I was literally just talking about building one of these yesterday to where we could place our electric skateboards on top to push it down the rail. Time to head to the shop and get started building!
Keep us posted! I have plans for an electric conversion too
I felt like a kid again just watching this, can't imagine how free and fun it must feel like in person.
The dog is having almost as much fun as you are!
This is one of the coolest summer projects I've ever seen anyone undertake. Good job, man!
Sorry someone ripped it apart. At least you had a little fun with it first!
Thank you so much for your compliments :) And yes, it's true, I had loads of fun with it before it got stolen!
+Inse van houts Where is this line?? As you can tell by my name I love trains and I'm very interested in the line. I'm sorry to hear it got destroyed/stolen as well, have you reported it to the police? Also did you ever see any trains operating on this track? If so do you know what railroad? Or what the locomotive/train cars looked like? I'm sorry for all the questions and that your adult toy train got stolen. Thanks!
This line is in France (far away from you I think). I don't have much information about this line, I've never seen a train on this track, but I've been told that it was first used for passenger transport (from 1890 to 19??) and then for wood transport (from 19?? to 2005)
I did report it to the police but they didn't want to do anything, because what I was doing was illegal...
looks so nice and peaceful
I would do this in a minute... welldone!
Imagine hearing “TSHHHOOOO-TSHOOOOOOOO”
And seeing a big plume of smoke coming closer...
this would be awesome to go on a camping trip with.
You are right, I wanted to do so, but my friends preferred go on a walking holiday :/
My dear mother would have loved that beyond words. enchanting
Aww the dog is the most cute thing in this video
rubberize the wheels for a smoother and quieter ride, friend of mine built something similar and he used that rubberized tool handle dip on his wheels and it worked pretty well and made pulling out faster with no wheel slip, its not as durable as hed like but for as often as he goes for rides it works ok
Just slide a cut open inner tube for a kids bike on the wheels and you are good to go.
Sergej Nadaždin seems like it'll give out instantly
Works for snow, ice and wet rail many years ago.
Fairmont motors sold them as an accessory .
Ahhh man, sorry to hear about the vandals. I am going to build one of these and run down some abandon MEC lines. Looks like a ton of fun and good way to see the back country.
It is surprising how clear the abandoned tracks are.
This is THE most amazing thing I've seen in years! How resourceful and inspiring. Gotta get me one o' those!
I love the sound of the wheels going over the rail joints....♥️
That's my favorite too
Looks pretty fast for what it is. This is the coolest hobby ever.
Donovan McCray just need to swap a Yamaha r1 engine in it now
I'm an actual railroad conductor for UP...and that looks fun!!!
Too cool. Got to do this once over 30 yrs ago. Awesome.
Was that cart motorised?
@@insevanhouts
Was not motorized. Grade was all down hill. We would only go about a mile or two but we had no control of the speed. Was like a rollercoaster!
This is so awesome I'm about to find all the abandoned railways in America now and have a go at this!
The dog should have been in control and I would have loved to see the dog look back and we see the guy running behind trying to catch up.
were as your dog gone hope you never left him you should of let him ride with you it was so cool to see your dog ride along
Don't worry, this video is made out of multiple videos, you can see a transition at 1m34. Was already home when I recorded the last videos ;)
That's one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I love abandoned train tracks and I always imagined a train just riding on those again like they are. But of course it would be too dangerous with a literal train, so this is the next best thing. And it looks like a thrill!
Definitly a nice ride. Have found several abandoned lines here but either they are being pulled up to make a walking trail or are overgrown
i think you should get the dog some goggles or better yet some doggles
good one!
I like how you modified the muffler as well that'll be a lot quieter Im sure and keep the exhaust from blowing in your face you did a good job on this car keep up the good work.
If your dog does not think his life is as Ruff as Bark, you are doing a good job as his human companion and friend.
that would suck if a train camd outta no where lmao
That it would
Tuck an roll haha
that's why it's always a good idea to use abandoned tracks
LMFAO 🤣🤣
Ghostbusters 2 ghost train
If you build another cart, find a way to take it home with you so they can't destroy it.
Or add tyres and steering and make it a motor railer
You mean Hi-Rail
i wasn't worried about yr dog.. it's that i like to see pet's in every shot - good stuff
Thats a cool buggy you built there.
I love these rail videos. Like being a kid! Next time you shoot one of these videos, I’ll let you borrow my camera stabilizer.
I wish I knew where this was, seems like a pretty cool place. Abandoned roads and tracks are very interesting.
said it in other video but your dog is so happy out there|!!! cheers from Canada.
Except for his bruised feet from being made to run on sharp rocks....
Don't worry the dog is fine :)
Inse van houts also sad to read your cart got destroyed too. Will you build another? Maybe make it so you can take apart and take it home.
Inse van houts is this illegal to do this I know how I could built one but I have no abandoned tracks but I could use live ones
Inse van houts I was about to ask to
that is fucking halirious you even needed to make this comment lol
I was about to ask where he was
Your very lucky to have an abandoned railway around your area with tracks still because there is one by me with no tracks sadly so I can't rail ride but it is a nice place for atvs and snow sleds in the winter
my very lucky?
That dog was probably like, let me back on jerk
More like: "let me get off jerk"
Coolest thing ever!
Minimonstertruck likes this....and tows his own train!
Brilliant !!!.. take my money now !.. What a great use and adventure of old railway.
That’s one way to workout your dog
SpencerDoesBeyblade I'd even say THE way
MY TURN! MY TURN! MY TURN! LEMME DRIVE!
lol
9/30 Studios
Is that a train ?
Oh, just a hill billy, keep on walking.
i love this stuff just came across two weeks ago and now spend most of my time looking for it.
the kart is amazing and the line too!
thats so cool how you built your own car to drive you around the track. I am a big train fan myself.
Hehe. Good to see you making some use out of what is probably a railway line that's missed by many people :-) But please, DO be carefull.
That looks like fun
that is the most beautiful scenery in the world
that was amazing. sucks to hear people destroyed it
That must be super fun. There are no abbandoned railroads around me tho.... gotta risk the occupied ones haha
Fuckin Aye Dude, right on! Now ready for the Hyabusa engine upgrade!
TitanMan404 I wish :P
Was thinking something similar too. Or go cart engine etc
So want to come and ride the rails with you dudes! Be a million rules here as to why you could not do that! Live free!
Thanks for your comment! Here to there are rules forbidding this, but we have kinda ignored them ;)
Way to go dude! Not like you going to meet anybody else on the line! You got the ultimate big boys train set!
+Andrew Wilson Haha, yes we did, but apparently it did bother some people and they decided to destroy it and steal all the valuable parts.
I'm probably going to build a new one next summer
Sorry to hear that, not right. Build bigger and better!
+Inse van houts Those same people will be more pissed if they turn it into a bike trail and they have hundreds of people in their backyards on bikes all hours of the day and night. They will wish you were back there again riding your cart and were the only ones there once in a blue moon.
Now if only you could have used a Jaguar....oh wait Top Gear did that already. LOL. Awesome video. What a blast! I am glad someone put some abandoned rails to some good use.
That's heaven 😻
If it breaks down you can Coast back 🌈
10 seconds in and I already like it, you got man's best friend with ya.
james bivens that's for sure, thanks!
c'est en Auvergne ?
The next cart you build add a train whistle. That would be awesome. Thanks for the ride.
Cool. Now you need a kaboose full of friends and beer. Would be fun way to go camping and fishing.
8HP Briggs Flathead really moves that cart well
Yeah for sure, quite incredible isn't it. It never let me down
In my country, theres an abandoned narrow gauge mountain pass which is 20 km long, very steep but really scenic and beautiful towards nature, the track consists tunnels and truss bridges, the railroad was abandoned for at least 50 years
The dog's having fun. :)
That sound would make a great sleep sound. Don't change it. Loop it for 8 to 10 hours and do a black screen.
U r living my dream. I'm fascinated with abandoned tracks like that. Also dream of one day chasing a slow moving flat car & hopping aboard & riding a mile or two before jumping off. lol :-)
I would love to do that too!
Even sounds like an old diesel two stroke locomotive. Well done!
wow! i bet it is cool to ride in one of those! sure does beat riding in a car!
Yeah I believe so to, you got less control over it than a car but it's still way cooler
What fun!! We did this in the Suisse-Normand a few years back - but had to hire one of the carts to do so. The ones we hired were pedal-powered - no-where near as much fun as yours! Where are these abandoned railways you use? In UK there are Very Few indeed with rails still in place. They've all been torn up for scrap, unfortunately. It was an understood 'rule-of-the-road' that when you came upon a cart going in the opposite direction that the cart with the greater number of people on-board would dismount and remove their cart from the track to allow passage. At the ends of the line there was a lever operated 'turntable' which raised the cart from the rails and you spun it round for the return journey. Wonderful memories! Vive la France! Oui!
But I see at 7:27 there's a track-side Sign 'GARE' - so maybe you're in France! and I'm now looking for the Station coming up!
too bad your house was not at one end and your job at the other... absolutely no traffic to fight! lol, looks like fun to ride
This is great! 😊
I see you got a 4-stroke much more reliable than that old 2-stroke oil burner you had and you definitely get a few more miles out of a tank of gas that's for sure. I like the videos keep them coming and the smile on your dog's face says it all...
Unfortunately this is the older build, but it got stolen. One of the conditions for the new engine was that it had to be a shifter. But 4 stoke shifters were way out of my budget.
Man, that's cool! Should have had an air horn just for effect! Kept worrying I'd see a headlight ahead...
Another creative way to get rid of a pet you don’t want…….the ole build a cart for an abandoned railroad ploy, genius! I didn’t see it coming and neither did Rover!
I'm putting a la z boy recliner on mine. Mini fridge, and a bar b que.
I read someone destroyed your cart? That's pure evel.
U own one too?
Yeah they did but I made a new one and put some sturdy locks on it
LOL thats one way to exercise the dog
Your dog is beautiful
Such a shame that most of it was destroyed! You must've put a lot of effort into that. I have a narrow gauge railway near me I could use something like that on
Hope you may build a new cart or speeder and keep the rails in use. It would be fun to see the different seasons along the tracks .
I hope so too! And that's a good idea, I will see if I got some different seasons on video. We got already 2, fall and summer (can be seen in Part 1).
Unfortunately it doesn't work in the snow, the snow sticks to the wheels, builds up higher than the flans and thus makes the cart derail :(
thats good to know your still interested in exploring the rails.I had watched the second part first this morning , did not realize it was yours as well.
Looks like fun.
this looks like so much fun!
Looks like fun!
I want to make one like that thats pretty damn cool
