Go karting on abandoned railroad tracks! Homemade train with dog

    Last summer, I built this wooden rail go kart from scratch. It's powered by a 8HP 'motorised cultivator' briggs and stratton engine. It can go up to 50km/h (31mph), the speed is not limited by the engine but by the weakness of the wooden base. (it starts vibrating quite a lot around 50 km/h).
    The 20km long railroad track has been abandoned for more than 10 years and is quite steep for a railroad. The maximum steepness is 20mm/m (2%) but it is often close to 10mm/m (1.5%)
    Fun fact:
    The last train that drove on this railroad never got to the train station, as the modern passenger train got stuck on the 20mm/m part of the tracks because of the wheels losing grip!
    Summary:
    0-24sec == Quick view of the railcart
    24-52sec == A ride with my dog
    52-1min34 == My dog running behind the cart (No abuse, he loved doing it, if he was on it he would constanly try to get off so he could run)
    1min34-end == A ride from my home to the end of the track

    Unfortunately, some people destroyed it and stole the valuable parts, there is not much left of it, only the wooden base and the seats

    Now you just need a set of those big train airhorns mounted on the front. It would bring back memories for the neighbours.

    Thanks for the ride! Reminds me of the time I was going to build one from the go-cart my dad made for me & my brother. We both grew up, went our own ways, got married & all but forgot about that go-cart. I'm too old now & both the tracks & my dad are gone. I still get the urge now & then when I walk the path where the tracks used to be. It's now called the IRONTON RAIL TRAIL here in Whitehall Penna.

      People should buy my "Impact' a James Grider novel on Amazon so I can afford to move out of a desert area into a forested area like that near a railroad track and do this. Maybe I could write that James Grider clandestinely travels America on a thing like that on active rails illegally, but only during the dark. It would be droll to write that a train catches up from behind going slightly faster and starts pushing the cart ahead after the catcher bumps into it. The hero must then climb onto the locomotive because he senses danger. The second he leaves the go cart, the high speed derails it and it's gulped under the train, obliterated into splinters but the hero is safe clinging to the front of a locomotive. Same scenario could be done with one of those trucks that have train wheels.

I'm sorry to hear it got destroyed/stolen as well, have you reported it to the police? Also did you ever see any trains operating on this track? If so do you know what railroad? This line is in France (far away from you I think). I don't have much information about this line, I've never seen a train on this track, but I've been told that it was first used for passenger transport (from 1890 to 19??) and then for wood transport (from 19?? to 2005)
      I did report it to the police but they didn't want to do anything, because what I was doing was illegal...

    rubberize the wheels for a smoother and quieter ride, friend of mine built something similar and he used that rubberized tool handle dip on his wheels and it worked pretty well and made pulling out faster with no wheel slip, its not as durable as hed like but for as often as he goes for rides it works ok

    I had thoughts with a buddy on building one of these. Never got off the ground -- as students, we had no money. Around 1980, no Internet back then, just mail-order catalogs if you could find one

    In my country, theres an abandoned narrow gauge mountain pass which is 20 km long, very steep but really scenic and beautiful towards nature, the track consists tunnels and truss bridges, the railroad was abandoned for at least 50 years

    Hope you may build a new cart or speeder and keep the rails in use. It would be fun to see the different seasons along the tracks .

    • @insevanhouts
      @insevanhouts  8 років тому

      I hope so too! And that's a good idea, I will see if I got some different seasons on video. We got already 2, fall and summer (can be seen in Part 1).
      Unfortunately it doesn't work in the snow, the snow sticks to the wheels, builds up higher than the flans and thus makes the cart derail :(

    I see you got a 4-stroke much more reliable than that old 2-stroke oil burner you had and you definitely get a few more miles out of a tank of gas that's for sure. I like the videos keep them coming and the smile on your dog's face says it all...

    • @insevanhouts
      @insevanhouts  5 років тому

      Unfortunately this is the older build, but it got stolen. One of the conditions for the new engine was that it had to be a shifter. But 4 stoke shifters were way out of my budget.

    What fun!! We did this in the Suisse-Normand a few years back - but had to hire one of the carts to do so. The ones we hired were pedal-powered - no-where near as much fun as yours! Where are these abandoned railways you use? In UK there are Very Few indeed with rails still in place. They've all been torn up for scrap, unfortunately. It was an understood 'rule-of-the-road' that when you came upon a cart going in the opposite direction that the cart with the greater number of people on-board would dismount and remove their cart from the track to allow passage. At the ends of the line there was a lever operated 'turntable' which raised the cart from the rails and you spun it round for the return journey. Wonderful memories! Vive la France! Oui!

    • @michaelgamble296
      @michaelgamble296 4 роки тому

      But I see at 7:27 there's a track-side Sign 'GARE' - so maybe you're in France! and I'm now looking for the Station coming up!

    Lmfao @ how everyone thinks you just up and left the dog. I missed the transition myself, but didn't take you for a cruel person. Lol. Really awesome scenery. I wish my brother and I could build something like this, but the wheels would be tough to find especially here in the U.S.

    • @insevanhouts
      @insevanhouts  8 років тому

      Haha, I did my best to make the transition as unremarkable as possible, I shouldn't have :P yeah the wheels are the hardest part to get on. But sometimes there are some being sold on eBay in the US, keep an eye on that. They are often really nice, but the shipping costs to France are outrageous...

  • @bigindian5555

    after I seen your video I clicked on next they had an amazing way where it was in parts and took only about 15 minutes to put it together the engine was on a couple of wood blocks attached to a piece of thick plywood the wheels were not attached,and seats too while it was apart it was just a piece of plywood with axles and it's was stored in back of a small hatchback car,if you did this,no more problem with thieves and vandals
