I re-watch this video every couple of years. Great review. Evil exists in the world and even in our home towns. If you're not prepared to defend yourself and the innocent from Evil, it will make a victim of you. So, when I can't carry my pistol, I carry the Thompson signature Vaquero. Being helpless is not an option. Thanks a bunch, Chris!!! -tom
I regularly carry the XL serrated Vaquero version. It's the kind of edge and cutting power (versus flesh and cloth) that makes me cringe when I think about it.
I carry a Cold Steel Voyager large tanto as my daily edc. I couldn't ask for a better knife to carry and the 4 inch blade is perfect for edc (in my opinion).
Bought this here in Australia for $150, and they are damn expensive here. Most of my best tools are made in Taiwan as well as my bike frames. Taiwan quality is way above crap Chinese made junk.
I am buying one these next week. It is a big and nice knife for self defense. I have the Cold Steel 4" Voyager Large Tanto in AUS10A. Now I want its 5 1/2" Big Brother.
Just 1 more thing...your style in your videos is refreshing. You come off like a really nice guy & not some know-it-all knife aficionado. Keep up the good videos & I am now a subscriber!!
I like how you don't take yourself too seriously and you keep a great sense of humor throughout your vids and try to incorporate some common sense in there as well. I also like how you are willing to admit that you bought a knife just because it looked badass and not because of some perceived utility or use. lol Keep up the good work! I love the intro BTW!
I just bought one and it arrives on Thursday. I better not be disappointed I don't buy mega folders for practicality I get them for their sheer intimidation factor. I have 2 EDC knives which one is for utility purposes and one for potential defense which is my 4 inch big boy. I'm not sure how EDC of a 7" closed 7.7oz knife will work but I know one thing Cold Steel quality is second to none.
I bought a CS XL Tanto Voyager in CTS-BD1 and I love it. Like the XL Talwar, that I also love to SD/U/EDC, it has an awesome handle that feels nice and secure in the extended grip. That gives you a ton of reach; I love it. I understand that Lynn C. Thompson likes to SD/EDC the, "Serrated," XL Vaquero Voyager; he developed the XL Voyager to be a Fighter. That explains why the handle is perfect. I carry mine everywhere I can. Peace, Stiletto :)
I have very large hands and very thankful for the L-XL Cold Steels,Recon +Voyagers I cant carry EDC a 2-4 inch blade, its safer for me to have the large blade with its larger handle
It's raining today (no bikes to repair right now)....watching knife vids...."waiting for the lawnmower or the truck full of cans to come by"....you sir are a funny dude!...thanks for the good videos Chris...
I bought all three XLVoyagers and recommend you check out the Vaquero as well. I got the pain edge version because I already have several of the previous version 6-inch model. And though some have criticized Cold Steel's serrations as being too brittle, they fail to see the tactical applications. If the standard models have any deterrence value, the serrated blades are not something _anyone_ wants to screw with, even (or should I say _especially_) experienced knife fighters. The recurved blade is very well suited for cutting and most reviewers are waving the tanto and clip point models in front of their cameras with no regard at all for the Vaqueros. That's fine if they just don't _like_ them, but I think they're really missing out. If they did some actual cutting tests, they might change their minds -- and perhaps dramatically. Having said that, the tanto is far and away my favorite of the three. I _love_ hollow grind knives for their strength and beauty. Some have said the Vaquero is too difficult to sharpen. Balderdash! My Spyderco Sharpmaker allowed me to restore the edge of my Voyager Plain Edge Vaquero in less than five minutes...well under. I don't know why they're not more people that like them. I also think they look great. -
At Boy Scout camp they have a knife restriction, but all it says is "no fixed blades", so folding knives are allowed. This would qualify as a folding knife. I want.
Your knife reviews are great Chris. I certainly wouldn't apologize nor do I think you should have to qualify the reasons for producing them. They're always informative and presented in an unbiased fashion. That's why I come back. I don't want to be spoon fed the company line, I tune in for raw, unedited, non flashy reviews. Keep it up.
Between my 23 yr old son & I, we have 95% of Cold Steel's folders. You are so correct in the sharpness of their blades. Good lord, I think boxes/packages, etc. rip themselves open when a CS knife is coming at them. I carry the large Voyager Vaquero (serrated) on a daily basis, but will also carry my 6" Hold Out if venturing into town. Our State (NC) has very lenient knife or weapons laws. There's no set length on the folders that are legal to carry, as long as they're not completely concealed...which just showing the pocket-clip will suffice. My son carries the XL Espada & the looks he gets when deploying that monster is a riot. Check out the 6" serrated XL Hold Out. The serrations are brutal!!
I also live in North Carolina. The length laws on knives are lenient. They are more concerned with concealment rather than blade length, which is fine with me. Although I have a Cold Steel 6" Counter Point XL, I will EDC my Cold Steel Immortal, Voyager Large Tanto Point, or my SR1 Lite Tanto Point when I am away from the house. Those 4" blade knives of mine are small enough for my hand to reach my keys in the same pocket. But they are big enough for serious work.
I’ve been looking for a new Cold Steel XL knife to pick up. So I came across this vid. Why do I like these XL knives? Because they are freaking cool! I’ll probably never use them for self defense. The most I probably will do is kill some cardboard and maybe the occasional roach. Either way it is K-O-O-L! Ha ha….
In the state of Florida, if I feel my body is in danger of great bodily harm, and or, death, I may legally exert deadly force. I am a concealed carry permit holder. I love knives, and have quite an extensive collection. You are correct in that when a knife is drawn, it is exertion of deadly force. For me, I'm a 61 year old disabled veteran. I'm a skilled martial artist, but I'm real. I'm 61, not 21. I love the Voyager series of Cold Steel. For the money, they are stellar. The Tri-Ad Lock is second to none. The Voyagers will suffice perfectly for edc, and especially for self defense. When I demonstrated my Rawles Voyager at the gun club, my door sized buddy jumped back. They can deploy very quickly, and have a wonderful blade. I've used them in survival training, camping, fishing, and for self defense. If someone is foolish enough to want to kick my butt, I don't play nicely with those folks.
Hey PREPAREDMIND101 because your kershaw freefall video had comments disabled I wanted to correct or justify the clip position and reason for the screw on butt end. It's actually for deep carry but more so the clip is ambidextrous, you can flip sides.
just try and close the blade,i had to use vice grips to unlock the bladei called cold steel and they said to hit it on a table to losen it up and to keep it open all night cause if its in the box to long it will need to break in, BS,this was the second voyager xl i received i sent the first one back with the same problem!
Holy crap Chris!!! I saw ur vid n ran out n got the xl tanto!! WOW!! N I MEAN WOW!!! This thing is a monster of a folding knife!! tysm for all the great vids! keep them comeing!! SEMPER FI! GET UP DUST OFF PRESS ON!!!
Jesus dude, 3 minutes before the knife appears, I gave up. I already bought the knife. I was interested in the knife, if I want to see some guy talk in the woods I'll go hunting with my brother in-law.
Love your work! Can you please do a review of the Cold Steel Warcraft Tanto? Seems to be indestructible on their product demo video, but no field reviews. The XL version with the 18 inches overall length seems like it could be a great chopper and machete (and self defense) tool. Much appreciated!
Utilitarian use: this thing is a BOMBER farm, ranch, camp whatever the case may be knife where you need a stout strong sharp blade that can do alot. Like you said it's alot more forgiving than the fulk flat grind of the others so I can bash the shit out of this thing and after YEARS of heavy use haven't had any issues even when I use it as an impromptu flathead screwdriver pry tool scraper etc. I have the serrated version and the bigger blade means you have plenty of fine edge for delicate work but the serrations make short work of rope straps canvas etc Best of all you get a nice sized knife most of the time you'd see on a belt that fits perfectly in your pocket. This is NOT a wear it to the office or in a suite knife at all. It's a working knife through and through
I love knives, and own quite a few. That being said the hammer was the first tool invented. I hope that didn't come out smart assy. Love your vids, keep them coming.
I have one for a few months. It's awesome. Can be an axe like kukri, a cooking knife and a good body guard. The price is not money but it's gigantic size, which for someone may look comic ;)
i just got this big ass knife and yeah....pocket sword. i dont even know what imma do with it but ill find a use. if i manage to keep all my fingers before i lose it or break it then itll be worth it. got it for $44.15 on ebay
lol so my friend saw my tanto and wanted it to bad i gave it to him. next time i saw him he had a couple bandaids on his finger and all i could say was pocket sword huh?!?! YUP. well i had to replace it so i went for the clip point. i didnt want the partially serrated clip point one but thats what i got, oh well! if you look around you can score some of the xl's for under 40 bucks.
Chris, since you've held both the voyager and the xl recon folders, what's the difference? Why is the recon twice the price? They seem to be the same knife.
I have the Voyager XL Bowie, a great knife. I also have the Voyager Large tanto, more useful size. Cold Steel makes some decent stuff. If you think that knofe is big, I have a Rajah II, it is a larger blade than the Voyager XL series. And I am looking to to get a Espada XL as soon as I get some funds. CS makes good stuff in Taiwan, they have decent quality control. Good vid. Your vids are getting better, it must be the rain, LOL....
Chris, great vid bro as always and it is an honor to be subscribed to a channel that tells it like it is....like it or not, PM101, Hickok 45, TNoutdoors9....I lost this one among the best. I don't have time or money to waste. I need tools and weapons that WORK, and yes there is a PHYSICAL REASON FOR THOSE NEEDS. I have carried and used the CS Voyager series since thier inception, and I used CS when nobody knew who LT was!! The steel in these knives is made to CUT, not twist, pry or dig. I have used them for over 20 years with that understanding. The tanto blades will perform survival tasks as long as they are respected for what they are. Mr E was right! This is a self defense tool first, but a great pocket knife for everyday tasks. I live in the south, I like big knives, and to me this is a pocket knife. This knife and a Leatherman or SOG PowerLock are my go to gear
Of the Voyager xl series I might have to rethink the tanto style. For my get home bag while working in the city this is probably a better option. It has a strong tip, and spine. It would be better for battoning than the other model. I'm not likely to need to skin a deer or something of that order just trying to get home, not to mention I can do that with a smaller secondary blade. It would make a good pocket fighting knife.
Finally bought me one of these just now using all of the money my mom owes me haha! Now she doesn't owe me anything and I get something that I've been wanting for a very long time! I'm exited :3
Which xl tanto folder is better overall, the cold steel xl voyager or the cold steel xl recon1? Im having a hard decision on which one I should purchase first.
First, I like your reviews. Now, as far as your introduction is concerned, you're right on target. I agree with you a 100%. When it comes to the CS Mega Tri-Ad Folders, they all "ROCK!!!" I own just about all of the 3 1/2" - 6" CS Tri-Ad Folders. And, I EDC these all the time. Though, the one's I EDC the most, are the "Large" size CS Folders... In CA, where I live. We don't have blade length restrictions. But, in a few of the large Cities, Gov. Buildings, and Schools there are blade length restrictions. So, you still need to check out the laws where you reside. So, for me, these are a great choice. Keep up the good work! Stiletto :)
weigh in on which is best xl vs large (forget medium) isnt the xl more of a liability to open in an emergency? cons: 1. you need more space for the 5.4" blade to swing out 2. need more force for people with smaller and weaker hands 3. longer handle has extra length that can also be grabbed by your attacker in a struggle. If your hands take up all the handle, he has nothing to grab except the blade is this worth the extra length? i think not
You do need a little more space, but it's also easier to inertia open the XL, just give a snap of the wrist and you can usually get the blade open and locked. Not sure what you mean about force. If you're referring to unlocking it, I find my large Voyagers to require a bit more pressure to unlock than the XL, possibly due to leverage. The longer blade is better for keeping them away from you in the first place. Swings and roundabouts. Both are very good knives, but if I were carrying a knife with an SD focus I'd go for the XL. The large is probably more non-knife-people friendly if you plan to use it around people.
Jason Clark Knife combat is by nature done at close very quarters. And the attacker is prone to have the element of surprise. What this means here is you want a knife that will deploy simply, quickly, and requiring little focus and space. Experts ruled out folding knives for two reasons, the locks aren't strong enough (until now) and the compromise of readiness, even with fastest opening folders. I can see how any folding knife as big as the XL is hurting for space swinging space. Unless its an OTF. If the blade has to swing into locked position, the space required for the arc is 4" half circle diameter for the Large, not a big deal. But a 5.4" diameter is something to consider by my estimate. Take full view of a typical self defense situation (with a knife). Your attacker would be a handful; you may already be in the midst of a grappling or wrestling match. You may have one hand on his arm preventing him from stabbing you etc. BEFORE you have a knife ready. Its possible a 12" or 13" folder would snag your clothes, his clothes, the ground, wall, or some object. Inertia doesn't really solve this problem but you can still pop it into place. But the Large one is where speed and simplicity is at. Why do you need the "extra" largeness anyways? I wouldn't count on the 'scare them away' thing. Chances are the would be attacker has a compelling motive to attack you in the first place and isn't going to be daunted by a big knife so long as they think they can 'win' or hit their objective. Maybe they are drunk or mentally ill, they wouldn't be able to rationalize any way. The fear may work, but chances are it won't. And the extra reach? average arms length is 25/30" extra 3" of reach is not that much. If you watch the sport of fencing for example, the "knives" used are about as long as your arm. You need much more reach to set up defensive parameter. A 13" inch knife isn't going to do a very good job. Besides we are not in a gladiator ring. The attacker usually draws first blood. If he is on top of you or you on top of him, do you want "reach"? A 4" blade will adequately pierce any of the 5 vital organs if inserted all the way. If anything, extra reach makes it easier for him to deflect the blade. Reach is a good thing, bigger blade, bigger wound. But its of limited use for self defense and comes at a cost while a 4" blade is big enough. As a rule of thumb, nobody is supposed to know about your weapon. Never know who you have to use it against. Especially with knives, they are much more effective when the bad guy is clueless. Regardless if it looks friendly or not, I would insist it stays in the pocket.
"No strong enough for fight a man" I think you have to avoid that kind of commentaries it is typical of a 12 years old or a individual with some social issues. Another thing you have to remember about people is "Grow old is mandatory, Grow up is an option". So you have here the two sides of the coin about irrelevant postings. Piece of advice ignore the idiots. I have trained Aikido and Kendo for a quite part of my life until I had one job accident. Im very well trained with Shinai, Bokken, Tanto, Wakizashi, Katana, Ninjato and Nodachi/Odach. I love modern steels and blades designs im a freak of blades and I carry one myself let me tell you I try to avoid confrontations and fights every day in this society plenty of retards brainwashed for TV, media, internet and government. The Tanto compared with European blades is the traditional Japanese dagger, the Tanto can deal very serious or deadly cuts but the main purpose is a stabbing weapon, the Tanto blade design deal very serious internal bleeding dont mean to be a tool. In modern times you have hundreds of different variants of Tantos and some of them are utility knifes full tang, thick blades, decent steels for field applications and they do the job very well. A cheap example is the Schrade SCHF11 around $40, it is a Chinese made steel Tanto variation and will serve you well in buschcrafting jobs. Maybe you can review it.
Great overview. I ordered the knife after your excellent review. I really like the part where you are talking about the bad guy who wets his pants. Hahahahaha. Keep the good work on.
-tom
I own one for travelling. I think of it as my hotel room short sword.
I regularly carry the XL serrated Vaquero version. It's the kind of edge and cutting power (versus flesh and cloth) that makes me cringe when I think about it.
agreed
Lynn Thompson, only CEO who does his own demos. Rockstar!
This and my ti lite 6inch all metal are my 2 favorite knives. I love buying tantos since I learned how to properly sharpen them.
You can use a gun to shoot something. And this could be important in certain situations. Knife you can use for everything else except to sit on it.
I am buying one these next week. It is a big and nice knife for self defense. I have the Cold Steel 4" Voyager Large Tanto in AUS10A. Now I want its 5 1/2" Big Brother.
I ordered the Cold Steel XL Voyager last night! 👍
Just 1 more thing...your style in your videos is refreshing. You come off like a really nice guy & not some know-it-all knife aficionado. Keep up the good videos & I am now a subscriber!!
Giant Cold Steel folders are frickin' ADDICTIVE!!! Great blades...
Spot on with your summary of carrying a knife Chris, love your channel and congrats on being picked up by the channel pros
Thanks for the review just ordered the serrated version, and that's a great angle under the canopy really shows the scale of the blade.
Old or new - the very good if not the best " survival /Knives " channel !
I like how you don't take yourself too seriously and you keep a great sense of humor throughout your vids and try to incorporate some common sense in there as well. I also like how you are willing to admit that you bought a knife just because it looked badass and not because of some perceived utility or use. lol
Keep up the good work! I love the intro BTW!
Keepin' it real...
I just bought one and it arrives on Thursday.
I better not be disappointed
I don't buy mega folders for practicality I get them for their sheer intimidation factor.
I have 2 EDC knives which one is for utility purposes and one for potential defense which is my 4 inch big boy.
I'm not sure how EDC of a 7" closed 7.7oz knife will work but I know one thing Cold Steel quality is second to none.
I'd watch this video just to hear the soothing rain sounds. Thanks for the bonus knife review and philosophy as well :)
I bought a CS XL Tanto Voyager in CTS-BD1 and I love it. Like the XL Talwar, that I also love to SD/U/EDC, it has an awesome handle that feels nice and secure in the extended grip. i have this knife, the cts db1 version. feels like it can penetrate any armored beast. love it!
Voyager Tanto XL vs Counter Point XL with one is currently your favorite?
nice video . also thank you for explaining why do you cary a knife
I’ve been looking for a new Cold Steel XL knife to pick up. So I came across this vid. Why do I like these XL knives? Because they are freaking cool! I’ll probably never use them for self defense. So tanto over clip point? Sweet i was planning on getting that one and its really nice to have confirmation
Got the Kobun Tanto by cold steel with Aus8a steel,
Just ordered mine, november 2020
Love when you pulled that out it gave the Majestic music haha classic
Youre right knives are for cutting and stabbing although you could probably use the handle of this one as a skull smasher

Dr. Mark I agree, they are a lot of knife for the money.

anything the Large might have over the XL one?
trap3400 controllability
I`m a blade freak, a knife addict and Live in England where they (generally) hate them, unless you are a chef.
Same here mate, the reactions one gets showing people my collection is hilarious and utterly sad at the same time?
just try and close the blade,i had to use vice grips to unlock the bladei called cold steel and they said to hit it on a table to losen it up and to keep it open all night cause if its in the box to long it will need to break in, BS,this was the second voyager xl i received i sent the first one back with the same problem!
I agree with you man, I like big folders. I wish I could legally carry the Rajah II. But I'll console myself with one of these.
Cool Blade...Love The New Soundtrack..
Jesus dude, 3 minutes before the knife appears, I gave up. I already bought the knife. I was interested in the knife, if I want to see some guy talk in the woods I'll go hunting with my brother in-law.
So you stopped at 1 minute in? Lmao go play on your tablet kid
What kind of grind does it have, hollow or partial flat?
Great response Chris!!
Great video iv always been a big fan of cold steel since I was about 15 lol I'm 30 now and still carry them !
Which one do you reccomend ? Tanto or Clip point for self defence knife ?
That drunk commenter was just scared of your knife :]
Lol...yep

Best of all you get a nice sized knife most of the time you'd see on a belt that fits perfectly in your pocket.

I love knives, and own quite a few. That being said the hammer was the first tool invented. I hope that didn't come out smart assy. Love your vids, keep them coming.
I want one so bad again are pellet guns good for a bugout
... Speaking of Cold Steel knives, what is your opinion of the Chaos Tanto, by Cold Steel?
I wish they were still $50, $70 now not much more but I would buy 2 if they were $50
I have one for a few months. It's awesome. Can be an axe like kukri, a cooking knife and a good body guard. The price is not money but it's gigantic size, which for someone may look comic ;)
Hi, is it better to buy the spartan or the voyager xl tanto?(for self defense purpose)
Id like to get this but I already have a lot of big knives that I dont use......
i just got this big ass knife and yeah....pocket sword. i dont even know what imma do with it but ill find a use. if i manage to keep all my fingers before i lose it or break it then itll be worth it. got it for $44.15 on ebay

It's tough as heck
who doesn't like buying big ass bad ass knives
I wonder if they make a Kydex Sheath for this piece but in the open position?
That would be nice, lol.
Chris, since you've held both the voyager and the xl recon folders, what's the difference? Why is the recon twice the price? They seem to be the same knife.
The recon has significantly better steel (either XHP or S35VN)
I have the Voyager XL Bowie, a great knife. I also have the Voyager Large tanto, more useful size. Cold Steel makes some decent stuff. If you think that knofe is big, I have a Rajah II, it is a larger blade than the Voyager XL series. And I am looking to to get a Espada XL as soon as I get some funds. CS makes good stuff in Taiwan, they have decent quality control. Good vid. Your vids are getting better, it must be the rain, LOL....
For a big beater knife like that in the 50 dollar range you said, how does it keep up on the wear and tear? Anything breaking a little to fast?
This knife and a Leatherman or SOG PowerLock are my go to gear
what would you think about doing a review of a traditional folder like the buck 110. thanks for what you do. it's awesome!
Are Half serrated not worth it? Or should I wait for the plain or fully Serrated to be back in stock
50 dollars? man that costs 100e in finland
Get a Cold Steel XL Espada. I've taken off ceiling fan blades with mine. No BS.
Also try the vaquero xl its nasty sharp and pointy. Straight evil. Another gruesome weapon by cold steel. Hell yeah!,
Of the Voyager xl series I might have to rethink the tanto style.
These knives' lock can hold a 600lb weight for like, an eternity!
Love CS :3
Yep...You can pound one into a brick wall and rappel off it! I'm sure that will be in the next "Proof" video CS puts out.
For sure dude; they're insane!
Finally bought me one of these just now using all of the money my mom owes me haha! Now she doesn't owe me anything and I get something that I've been wanting for a very long time! I'm exited :3
I mostly use my knife for opening mail and packages. =\
I guess my mail can be scared =P LOL
Thanks for the video
Just wanted to say you are the man!! i love your videos im long time subscriber keep up the awesomeness
Got mine in serrated.
do you prefer it to the Tatanka?
It looks like a little buster sword.
what's the price of that??
Which xl tanto folder is better overall, the cold steel xl voyager or the cold steel xl recon1? Im having a hard decision on which one I should purchase first.
Voyager
The tanto that is!
man you crack me up, i needed those laughs today. kindled knife freak spirits
Hey Chris. What belt should I use on my worksharp for the bk-7.? The red one right?
Thanks for a great video (as always)
Greetings from a fellow knifebrother from Sweden
my paternal grandfather is from the Aland islands when they were still Swedish
Mr Thompson is one of my favorite people.....just because he isn't afraid to do what he does. I like the sh__ out of that guy.
First, I like your reviews.
Now, as far as your introduction is concerned, you're right on target. I agree with you a 100%.
When it comes to the CS Mega Tri-Ad Folders, they all "ROCK!!!"
I own just about all of the 3 1/2" - 6" CS Tri-Ad Folders.
Stiletto :)
This is way better than Chris" new vids.
Before Chris got a giant stick up his ass. He was actually a neat dude.
i got this one it rocks
weigh in on which is best xl vs large (forget medium)
isnt the xl more of a liability to open in an emergency?
cons:
1. you need more space for the 5.4" blade to swing out
2. need more force for people with smaller and weaker hands
3. longer handle has extra length that can also be grabbed by your attacker in a struggle. If your hands take up all the handle, he has nothing to grab except the blade
is this worth the extra length? i think not
You do need a little more space, but it's also easier to inertia open the XL, just give a snap of the wrist and you can usually get the blade open and locked.
Whats with the eye liner
Those are his eyelashes, I think.
Back up small guns with a big knife.
Awesome
It's a Beast !!!!!!
that's SICK Bro!\m/
Approved by Rogal DDL.
Great overview. I ordered the knife after your excellent review. I really like the part where you are talking about the bad guy who wets his pants. Hahahahaha. Keep the good work on.
