Just a quick comment about the dates to maturity on seed packets. These estimates are based on spring planting and growing through the height of spring and summer. When planting succession crops for fall harvest, you have to add a couple of weeks to account for the shorter days of fall growing. Johnny's Seeds has an interactive succession planting spreadsheet that will calculate your fall sewn crops that takes this into consideration. It's free and very easy to use.
Where you are depends greatly too! My August planting in Western Washington was completely different than my August garden here in the hill country of Central Texas, not just because of first frost. It's still too hot to plant peas! 😭😅
We're in the Highlands of Scotland but this video contains so much top notch advice a LOT of it still entirely applies to us here. Thank you for your enthusiasm and your knowledge. Great stuff! 👍 🏴 😁 🐂
God bless u in Scotland... knew he was going to talk about planting carrots when the words Tuck's all-time favourite veg tumbled out of his mouth... love from Vancouver Island, BC, 1/2 scot
I started all my Asian greens. I'm in South Jersey. Mizuna (regular and pink), Arugula, radish, Spinach, Bok Choy (tiny and purple lady), Chijimsai, Kohlrabi, and a Wasabi Radish. I planted last week and 75% of the seeds have already sprouted. Just waiting on the giant radish. to sprout.
I totally love seeing Tuck on your videos. I have a yorkie/Chinese crested 10lb boy. He follows me all around the garden and watches my chickens. I can't get him to eat veggies but he cries if I don't take him every where I go. He's helped me get through C19 which I caught last August.
Every video James and Tuck produce has a positive impact on either the current state of my garden but has creates so many ideas for the next season and the next year, as always thanks for the great work! ❤❤❤❤ for Tuck!
I followed you when I lived in Florida but never planted anything. Now I live in Indiana so it's more usable because my zone is not the same but closer to yours. But I still haven't planted. Left over nonsense from the army gets me in moods. Hopefully I'll get stuff together for next year
Fellow Hoosier here & previous Floridian. This is my 1st yr trying to grow. Every yr I think I've missed the opportunity because everyone is pulling up their gardens by this time, but I've been in couraged to see what I can still grow before winter. I want to encourage u to plant a couple things this wk. I've been dealing w some mental hardships. I've found caring for my plants really to be helpful for my mental health. I wasn't sure if my plants would survive &/or produce anything, but they (well some of them) are starting to look better, so we'll see. Best of luck to you. *Mental Health isn't Spoken About Enough* ... ♥️
If I say this I realize it might not be helpful. But I will say 1st there's still time to plant fall gardens and even late summer ones and 2nd if you do manage to get a little bit of those started you might find it very relaxing; and help you kind of meditate through whatever your troubles are.💖
Hi Michael, I am an Airforce vet . Try to let the army moods change into a gardening mood. It is so relaxing and rewarding. I have been doing it for several years here in Canada. The garden doesn't always produce, but gets better every year. This guy James has so many great tips and there are many more as well. Remember...a poor harvest turns into great compost for next year!
I do hope you feel better. Gardening is very meditative. My advice is start small. Very small. Buy a few starter plants at a big box store next spring. If you want to be really encouraged plant radishes! They're superfast and cold hardy for the first crop in spring.
If you have a fence like i do, you can get some netting from the dollar store and tack/nail it to the fence, the full height of the fence and plant peas along the bottom of the fence - the peas will grab onto and climb right up the netting (sometimes you need to help them when their little tendrils first come out but after that they go on their own). grab a package of innoculant if you can still find it, soak the peas overnight, dust with the innoculant and make 1" deep holes an inch or 2 apart and drop those bad boys in the holes. Super easy and still time to get some peas at least!
Hey James, love little ❤ Tuck ❤ ! He was sitting at your feet. His ears were perked up and listened to every word you were saying. Thank you for the info!! 😊
James. The inspiration you give me and the way you love the world and how you live Tuck. And your loyal fans. We love you dearly . Thanks for everything you bring to this world ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄 Tuck the boss James the 👑
Thanks for the tip on soaking the peas! I've never grown a fall garden before and I'm excited to try some of these in my Utah garden. The Almanac says I have until October 26th.
Thanks James and Tuck. I haven't really tried fall gardening before. This is the year I'm going to do it. Planted beets a few days ago. I'll put in carrots this week and some lettuce soon.
Thanks. Now that my tomatoes are gone, I want to keep the garden growing. (I don’t know if you’ve mentioned them, but the best tasting tomato ever is Cherokee Purple!). I’m really looking forward to growing Chinese vegetables because I love making Chinese food. I love seeing Tuck. He’s such a cutie, and it’s amazing watching him dig up his own carrots and eat them. What a great little buddy.
I also love Cherokee Purple tomatoes. I’m in Zone 7 and the heat and humidity this growing season 2022 made them start cracking while still green on the tops this year. I grew them last year and always save the seeds. My tomatoes were hit with everything this year from a White Fly attack, scorching sun and now blight.
My dog loves carrots also!! I’m new here to this channel, and I didn’t know he was talking about his little cutie, till the end! Wonder what it is about carrots that some dogs like??
@@fancythat5136 I’m somewhere between Zones 9-10 (Southern CA), and we had a bit of trouble with the tomatoes cracking, too, but not while they were still green. Sorry you had that problem. Thanks for the closeup of the tomato supports/string thing a show or 2 back - I did not have anything to attach the string to BUT I have these stakes that had indents on the tops, so I put string thru those and down both sides of the stakes and zip tied the string as tight as I could to the stakes. Not ideal but so far it's working, plants are still uprght and my first tomatoes are finally appearing. I have had success placing a glass panel over my garden bed covering the lettuce seeds. You can put shade cloth over it if needed, but basically makes a mini greenhouse. Helps keep birds from stealing my fall seeds too.
green beans, cucumbers, peas, beans, carrots (board cover), beets, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Swiss Chard, radishes; Clayton, Mache, Arugula, Mizuna, sorrel, Asian greens (choys) and spinach (Sept.).
Sorrel?? Awesome! I am excited 😛 to get this in the ground.
💚💚💚 to Tuck for planting cucumbers! 🐶

Thank you, you’re food Forrest it’s amazing, especially because of your little boss, Tucker, he’s adorable.
I look sooo forward to your videos. Thank you for making them!!
Thanks James and Tuck I’m planning to start greens in my new raised bed as soon as I get soil in it Last year I had kale that lasted all winter!!!!
Love, love, love little Tuck!
Went out and bought some pea, radish and carrot seeds today for my small urban garden. Thanks for the tips!
Ur food Forrest is amazing !!! I have 1 question , how do u water the plants tht need 2b watered ?!
You wouldn't believe our tomatoes being so tall and lot's if fruit. We put fish under each one then we planted a area with no fish those plants didn't do well. But we thank you on your idea we also have our peppers in front and were loaded with them. Best garden ever thanks.
Great video! I’m in Michigan. (Southeast) I would love a video on growing through the winter covering my plants.
living in zone 9a is about the best thing going for me up here in CA. garden of eden type weather in the bay area. wish it wasn't such a hell hole, but I grow year round peas, beats, onions, and garlic. my artichoke and most of my Cucurbits and peppers grow until late November;. gets dark early and cold at night and breeds bacteria and spores uncontrollably at that point. but thanks for your videos. i learn a lot and you still have the best harvest of anyone I've ever seen homesteading the garden. incredible job man.
James, you are my favorite gardener! ❤️ 🥕🌻🐶🥕🌻🥕🐶❤️
You talk fast, give great important information and you don't waste our time with fluff talk. Thank you for being YOU and sharing your experiences with US! 🥕🐶🥕🌻🥕🐶 🥕🌻🥕 You're the best! 🥕
7:20 I put all my seeds in the freezer, they germinate super fast. I can get cucumber sprouts in 2 days.
thanku brother! for changing me into a gardener 🙂
Burlap is great to cover tuff to germinate seeds and allows light. Be careful when removing as seedlings can grow through the fabric.
Timely video I just planted pea seeds, thanks so much!
🌺👍🏼thank you so much for all your tips James ! I always follow what you plant and when you plant because I’m zone 7a too and I love your garden !
