I lost my garden supervisor this past Sunday. My cat frankie had been with me the whole time I was on this property. He saw my garden go from one single 5x5 bed to over 40 bed and a bunch of fruit trees, bushes and vines. He spent more time in the garden then I did so he got a proper burial in a nice little spot right next to the vegetable garden where he can watch over it forever.

The best thing about your videos is your enthusiasm. It shows and flows through to your viewers.
Our suburban growing space is tiny compared to yours, around 40sq ft plus some pots, but we still can gather fresh food from the garden year-round.
Keep inspiring us to grow. We have very young nieces and a nephew who we are able to show that food doesn't have to come from a supermarket.
Next-gen growers are under training for sure.

I couldn’t agree with you more James, I started watching your videos in my senior year of high school - back when the pandemic first hit - and they offered so much great information on this incredible way of life in a time where I didn’t know what to do with so much spare time. I started planting apple trees and researching square foot gardening because of your videos and they changed the way I approached gardening, as well as the way I looked at the land that surrounded me. You’ve given me a fresh perspective on the bounties that nature has to offer. Thank you for providing people like myself with the resources, inspiration, and all around great content.

No, that may sound good but it's not true. My garden got ripped apart by an angry manager who said I can't grow a garden in my yard (even though I've been renting here for 5 and 1/2 years) because it "looks bad". I don't have the resources to move. So no, we can't ALL be secure when some of us on the bottom of the totem pole have to follow rules and regulations lest we become homeless

Something they have for gardeners like yourself a few towns over is a community garden, which is very inexpensive to rent a plot, and sometimes I just go there to get ideas from other gardens on how to improve my gardening techniques. Patios, balconies, small and large pots, indoor tiny hydroponics under lights with available machine kits, small and larger raised bed outdoor gardens, in-ground rows and plots, and yes, interplanting poly cultural gardening in yards with space for fruit vines, bushes, and trees in addition to both annual and peri annual plants. Our kid is in primary school and we teach them about the importance of growing food, even though sometimes they are not interested or bored of hearing me talk about it! lol
A lot of the time though, they do want to help out in the garden come planting or harvest time.
They are interested when we first set up the wormery as were their friends too, talking about the type of worms, what their eggs care called and why worms are important and not just because they eat our food scraps!
They also went to nature club after school and planted some runner beans to bring back home and made a bird feeder from a used plastic milk bottle.
It is never too young to start learning about gardening. There are so many things you can do, grow and regrow inexpensively.
No matter the the size of your living space, you can grow at least something edible. Even in a block of apartment flats, if one place grew something different and swapped it with another neighbour that in itself it doing something.
It's not about mass farming or waiting until you have retired to a house with a big garden that you should be thinking about starting to grow food.

The water for the critters is important in many ways, particularly in more rural places. Growing up on a horse ranch, we would place shallow pans of water in perimeter locations well away from the animals and well traveled areas for the rattlesnakes. The would come deep into the property after water in the hot summer months in southern California. The pans went a long way to keep them away from the horses, dogs and the family. I wonder, does Tuck have a special bark when certain critters come into your space?

I know you want to ripen your tomatoes on the vine but you really don't need to do that.. you can even pick them when they go from the light green/white to just a tiny bit pink and they will fully ripen with all the flavor within about a week on your kitchen table or someplace out of the sun.. (no deep dark green near the stem and a slight tint of pink at the top and it will ripen off the vine) I am about 100 miles from you about the same climate and situation but you have more shade... we were going to get hit by a hurricane a couple years back and I remembered someone taught me that.. if its just a tiny bit pink you can even pick it.. so I went out and harvested about 150 tomatoes... and sat them on my kitchen table on newspaper and I would sort them.. green to red every day.. and every one of them was good to eat... If you find you are having situations and you have healthy fruit that is not 100% ripe but its a great specimen then pick it.. don't wait.. test it before you need to do it for real and then you won't doubt it if you need to ... you're crazy in that suit heh its been painfully hot and humid the past week or so .. best wishes.

I've been picking tomatoes when they are just blushing, and they ripen just fine on the counter and taste great too. I've heard that the plant will produce more if you pick earlier. However, I was recently reading that tomatoes that ripen on the vine have more nutrients, such as lycopene, than those that ripen off the vine. Better nutrition is one reason I garden. So, for now, I'll pick at various stages and see how it goes. If I find that the critters & pests ruin the ripe tomatoes, it's back to picking all when they blush.

    Hey James
Love your channel and your energy. But as I see you pick this and that I wonder if you have the same frustrations as I do here in Philly. I'm inundated with squirrels and groundhogs that devour my tomatoes, beans and melons just as they are ripening. Wondering if you could speak to your own battles with critters?

    • @lukedejour

When I lived in Philly the squirrels where almost impossible to stop eating tomatoes. I gave up and just grew peppers.

It has been really bad this year. I am going to put out some more water bowls for them and I am going to trap and release them somewhere else I think.

Critter netting and deer corn has worked for me. Also, if you have a guy in the home have him pee around your beds every now and then. Just make sure he can aim

They've been real bad for me down in Florida this year. Started going after green tomatoes even after they'd hit all the ripening ones. I've been trapping them and releasing them in some woods across from my neighborhood and it has helped tremendously!

I live in a regular terraced house so I don't have that much space for growing, however I pick my tomatoes when they start to turn colour only the tiniest bit. They will ripen inside the house and are completely safe from critters!

I’m 19 and started my own garden at 18 , I’ve been doing it for a year now and I’ve done a lot and learned a lot In just 1 year. I went from growing strawberries, raspberry’s and some cucumbers to growing pumpkins , squash , corn , beans , all sorts of veggies , jute , sweet potatoes, potatoes, peppers , kiwis , garlic , onion, weed(: , watermelons , grain plants like Job’s tears , Amaranth , millet , also growing mulberry’s , apples now , paw paws , Jublee , pineapple guava … I’m growing many plants😂😂 but I just wanna say thank you for being a good source for enough and also all the valuable advice you give every video. I couldn’t have been so successful this year without you man! So thank you a lot for that! I plan on making my life’s work around plants! Once again , thank you man🙏🏻
