I sat in this car when it had 26 miles on it and it was in a collection in Rhode Island - crazy example of an amazing car. I'll never forget it. Love these videos - Thanks "Brothers" (and Kevin!)
Your build sheet pic showed the M22 trans option, but your video shows an automatic dash and trans cooler lines going to the radiator. What kind of bull are you trying to pull here?
The SS emblem is indeed upside-down, a feature we noted during shooting this car. However, it would not be the first one that left the factory with such an error. Numerous line employees who built cars during this era have noted improperly installed or missing items, mismatched trim, or other assembly line errors. Interesting stuff!

While it's not my favorite muscle car anymore, I still love the 1970 Chevelle. That is a gorgeous looking ride. I like the red with black stripes color combo best I think. Black with red stripes is cool too, but man what a beauty. Thanks for sharing.
I can tell you this car is real. I know for a fact it is because this car belonged to my Dad. He ordered it that way because he was a drag racer. This car sat in the garage next to a 68 Biscayne with a 427 and M22 4 speed. My dad sold both cars at the same time to a collector in Atlanta. The Biscayne only had 324 miles on it.
I had that car with an LS5 and AC with a four speed. Loved it till I sold it for 2500.00 cause they were saying gas was going to go to .50 cents a gallon 8
50 cents a gallon????? OMG!!!! That's crazy!!! But hey I know how you feel. In 1984 after I graduated I could've bought an original 69 GTO judge for $750!!! They sold (well traded it in on a little pickup) it for$500!!!!
50 cents a gallon? Sorry to make you puke again ,but I still remember one day in 1970 ( I was 9) my dad pulled into a POWER TEST gas station to fill up with 27 cent/ gal. Regular. In rolled a brand new cranberry red ss 396, and I stared in awe as he filled up with 35 cent/ gal. ETHYL. damn, now I gotta puke 🖖

Interesting that build sheet lists an M22-4 speed but yet gauges show an automatic transmission. Also, where is the cowl induction flap, cowl induction air cleaner, and hood pins? ZL2 was the cowl induction hood with flap.

That rounded back that GM developed to replace the "square box" in 1968, gave those cars a really sexy look in my humble opinion--for the Chevelle, Cutlass, Skylark, and Lemans
I love the comments on how it's not real because the SS grill emblem is on upside down, and the stripes are too badly done. I bought a Chevrolet pickup back in the day with a Chevrolet emblem on the drivers door and a GMC emblem on the passenger door. These vehicles were/are built by humans who make human mistakes. In 1970 we were also heading into a time when quality on American cars was in the toilet, that's one huge reason the Japanese car industry took off so fast here. You have no idea how poor the quality on some cars was. Today's cars bear little resemblance to the cars back then in quality, fit & finish. Almost every dealer in the US had a story of chasing down a rattle in a car only to finally find a soda bottle (an old glass one, not plastic like today) hidden inside a body panel. Frequently this was done by disgruntled line workers who were pissed off or felt it would show why they needed more money.
Which is ironic considering how much GM workers made. Back in the early eighties the story was that GM line workers made around $23/hour. This was when most other factories paid $7-8/hour, a good one paid $10-11/hour, almost half of what GM paid. Back then GM was like the holy grail of factory jobs and really hard to get in to. I don't know if GM was paying substantially higher wages back in 1970 or not, but I suspect it was still more than the average factory. I don't know any of this for a fact, it's just what I've heard.
John Friend Remember also that in late 1969 , the was a big UAW Strike . This resulted in some pretty bizarre things being put into GM Cars for the last of the `69 Models and first of the `70 Model Cars .
I ordered a 1970 LS6 chevelle in nov. of 1969.The car came in to my dealer on march the 4th 1970 due to GM had been on union strike..The deck lid did not line up well and the console was not bolted down.It came as I ordered with 410 rear gear ratio, heavy duty battery,4 speed rock crusher trans. The trans wined mostly in 3rd gear due to gear design.I immediately removed the smog system because everytime i shut engine off it keep turning over for a few seconds.headers went on just 2 weeks later.Problem resolved.I was only 23 years old then.Three months later I ran it with the 14" stock radial tires, open headers .I had to literally come out of hole at just above idle to control wheel spin.A show room car stock turning consistant runs in the high 12s on street tires was a dangerous car on the street in the wrong hands with 500 pounds of brute torq. With 410 rear gear at 50 mph in 4th gear putting to floor it would lightly squeal the tires..The moral of this story, I traded in 1972 for a new corvette.I still have tears on my pillows not realizing at that time the value and knowing it would go down in history as the most powerfull production car of that era of muscle cars. You cant fix stupid.
I remember my High school days back in the 80s my friend had a 1970 Chevelle SS with the 454 that he bought off the original owner that used it as a daily driver. My friend paid $1500 & that was a lot back then for a 17 yo...I remember the car had nearly 200.000 miles on it, the engine smoked a bit but my friend tore up the students parking lot with burn outs...I can still hear that engine everyday he left the school grounds. In our Senior Year my friend sold the Chevelle cause his grandparents Bought him a Brand New New Body style 1987 Ford F150 Bare Bones Custom trim. You have a good eye, we mistakenly inserted a shot from a different LS6 Chevelle in the collection. This is a highly documented car, we just dropped in the wrong shot.
I've seen many cars with low low mileage but I've never seen an inspector miss a reveal trim molding that bad! That would not have passed, someone took that section of molding off over the last 51 years
Hard to believe the original buyer didn't make dealer fix those misaligned truck pinstripes. Here's a another muscle car history throwback for u younger guys.....just a few years later, starting n '73, MANY big block owners were swapping out engines for a 350....why, cause Arab oil embargo lead to exorbitant gas prices, rationing, and long wait times at stations.
It’s very interesting the wide variety of ways that these cars could be ordered. Unlike today where it’s just a trim level or a package you got very specific in terms of options that you wanted. This one isn’t cowl induction and is auto on the column even though it has an LS6 motor. Interesting how you could place a very specific order for a car without computers, cell phones or fax machines and get exactly what you want 😂 My 70 SS396 was the exact same thing.
What do I need a time-machine for? My favorite Muscle Car is already in this time. It’s hard to beat 450 horse-power and triple digit torque from the factory! :€)
My uncle’s,sister’s,cousin’s next door neighbors mom lost her virginity on one of those hoods...good times. #canberryred #flapperhood #atleastitwaswhenigotdonewithher
It doesn't have the flapper but isn't that still a functional cowl induction hood? It has the correct underside but not the air cleaner assembly to seal to it.
Incredibly cool car. I would love to see how it runs the quarter mile, just a few runs - I am sure nowhere near the times the Factory Stock cars run today.
There is a lot of things wrong with it , but this the beginning of the 70s , a decade in which American cars became synonymous with junk , let's be honest the cars of that decade were not exactly screwed together to well .
If a time traveler had gone back, hung around Chevy dealerships telling ppl who bought desirable cars “PSSSST!! Hey…This is going to sound nuts, but I’m a car guy from the future. Drive that car home, park it indoors out of the elements, and never drive it. It will only get more valuable by the day.
Finally after a year, I now know what car that is that you have in the intro of your videos lol beautiful car. The best news is that it doesn't need much restorations!!! 😀👍
a guy in town has a 77 trans am se ,he bought it straight from the dealer in 77,he trailered it from dealership to a climate controlled storage place...get this...8 miles odometer!!!
@Dalton: My Exact Thoughts,The Tach Was An Option,Only $45-55, If I Recall, But if It Was Ordered for RACING,WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD HAVE FORGOTTEN TO CHECK THAT BOX.OVER REAVING OF THIS ENG. WOULD SPELL DISASTER & NOT SURE WARRANTY WOULD BE GOOD,W/ Out One.Its Also Missing the Air Injection Tubes for Emissions.
Im not getting this or may I say VERY leery to the authenticity to its claim!! LOOK at the build sheet! M22 4 Speed & Vinyl Top .... Where's the 4 SPD & Vinyl top??
Lew Scagnetti Lew, we've admitted to showing the incorrect build sheet in error - watch Episode 65 for a complete explanation and the correct build sheet. ua-cam.com/video/ZsQzIyDg4vk/v-deo.html
Almost, I want to look at this car with a leery eye and ask, "Really?", but stranger things have been found. So, I dunno. Nice car, definitely my favorite old Chevy.
I have put 110,000 happy memory filled miles and smiles on my 65 SS. If the sun or an asteroid, or nukes take us out, that car will be a pristine chunk of molten metal. That's a remote possibility, but right now " SLEEPY JOE" wants to make gas unaffordable, unobtainable, tax our mileage and have everyone driving RC cars in 5 years. So glad I was born in 60's.⛽⛽✌
Speedometers are so highly complex and sophisticated that there is absolutely no way anybody could have ever set it back to 34.2. The science and techniques for doing that just haven’t been discovered yet.
All old cars had cables on speed odometer, just unscrew it and mile would not turn. But they were very easy to turn back miles on any car. Even today you can turn back miles and hours on new cars…
It's amazing how someone could own something like that and not drive it. That being said, the very fact that it hasn't been driven is why it's probably worth 7 figures. Personally, I would prefer a 4-speed manual and a cowl induction hood. But that's just me.
It's really time consuming to lay out the stripes on the Z28 and the Chevells. Even more annoying when you have to cut a hole for a blower and provide bracing, and get the hood to shut right, with even clearances all round. People don't understand what it takes. Two stage paint takes more time to rub than it does to spray. Why would they do that to a stock cowl induction hood? Looks, you won't break into the 12s with out cheater slicks or wrinkle walls and tubs.Enjoy an unmolested car.
On the hood they used a template and then finished it off by hand. The transition between the template and the hand painted part does not look right. I believe it was repainted
Since it was ordered without the cowl induction that means no stripes. They had to be ordered separately and maybe they forgot and dealer painted them. Wouldn't be the first time that happened.
That's amazing. This would sell at Barrett or mecum for $2.5 million. Not as rare as the $3 million dollar hemi Cuda convertible, only one of those. 4400 of these... But the miles... Wow
To much wrong here. The paint is way to smooth, emblem's not right and there is no way in hell that that truck would have been that far off. The A pillar was repaired because there was putting in the Bondo. I call bullshit on this car. To roll back a odometer is easy and can be done. Patric Glenn Nickles needs to look at this car and I'm sure he would say the same.
Build sheet says M22 HD 4 SPD TRANS? 3 speed Turbo Hydramatic in car? 2+2=0! Or maybe another GM mix up. The guys on the line put in the wrong pedals, shifter, console and transmission, and installed the SS badge upside down. They missed the vinyl top and the emmissions hose. I guess none of them could read. The striping paint was never that bad from the factory. I believe someone made all these mistakes while restoring it, on purpose, to give it the appearance of an original car. It's stinkin around here, and it is not because it's lost it's new car smell!
It is an interesting curiosity to be sure it's like an old pair of sneakers or a pair of trousers or flight jacket that you get that you were it was meant to be worn in for whatever reason it wasn't I had my old man watch this video and he was born 1950 and his best guesstimation on this particular Chevelle is the original owner had intended to convert it into a racing car like you said in the video sir but most likely he blew all of his Budget on acquiring the initial package the LS6 454 probably set the original owner back and then meant to come back to it one day and got distracted by life and other commitments and so she sat at least that's his best guess but I guess we'll never really know it's still sort of a disappointment that it never got driven like you said that's the great tragedy of that particular member of the genus but the fact that it survived and is preserved means now it can be used as reference if only it were stick shifter that would be the best thing but I've often thought it is strange that the great automakers never preserve a factory example of any of their vehicles from this era still impressive though Chevrolet for life
LOL, 34 miles, Auto transmission and a built sheet that says M22 1:56. WTH? Are you showing someone else’s sheet? At 2:00 the build sheet also says ZL2 hood and this car just has the normal domed hood. Ha ha. That’s too funny. And no I won’t believe a story if the owner swapped the Rock Crusher Muncie and ditched the ZL2 Cowl Induction flapper hood.

alex collins sounds complicated.?was she knocked up !
i was there
I wonder if it’s for sale? It’s gorgeous.
'tis better to have a tribute that you can DRIVE!!! Nice car.
It doesn't have the flapper but isn't that still a functional cowl induction hood? It has the correct underside but not the air cleaner assembly to seal to it.
Sweet. These low mileage cars should have a museum. Charge 10$ to go in and see what they looked like from the factory and plus help to keep them.
Incredibly cool car. I would love to see how it runs the quarter mile, just a few runs - I am sure nowhere near the times the Factory Stock cars run today.
Question, did they use side post battery's in 1970? every 1970 I've seen used top post cables, that were unique
ru4crzn1 some came with side post , some did not
I Forgot 1 thing.... Does that build sheet not say...Black on Black ??
There is a lot of things wrong with it , but this the beginning of the 70s , a decade in which American cars became synonymous with junk , let's be honest the cars of that decade were not exactly screwed together to well .
absolutely gorgeous👍👍
If a time traveler had gone back, hung around Chevy dealerships telling ppl who bought desirable cars “PSSSST!! Hey…This is going to sound nuts, but I’m a car guy from the future. Drive that car home, park it indoors out of the elements, and never drive it. It will only get more valuable by the day.
How much would this cost 150--200?
Finally after a year, I now know what car that is that you have in the intro of your videos lol beautiful car. The best news is that it doesn't need much restorations!!! 😀👍
super car and much better than the new models and your adore the legendary and classic cars and put a like
a guy in town has a 77 trans am se ,he bought it straight from the dealer in 77,he trailered it from dealership to a climate controlled storage place...get this...8 miles odometer!!!
he keeps it up on jackstands
So, a factory bench seat LS6 with cowl induction delete, "ordered for racing" with a TH400 and a 3:31 rear axle ratio?
@Dalton: My Exact Thoughts,The Tach Was An Option,Only $45-55, If I Recall, But if It Was Ordered for RACING,WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD HAVE FORGOTTEN TO CHECK THAT BOX.OVER REAVING OF THIS ENG. WOULD SPELL DISASTER & NOT SURE WARRANTY WOULD BE GOOD,W/ Out One.Its Also Missing the Air Injection Tubes for Emissions.
@@edcain3676 it's got a tach in it. The 6500 redline ls6 tach
Ls6 u coulda ordered the 4.11 gear
Im not getting this or may I say VERY leery to the authenticity to its claim!! LOOK at the build sheet! M22 4 Speed & Vinyl Top .... Where's the 4 SPD & Vinyl top??
Lew Scagnetti Lew, we've admitted to showing the incorrect build sheet in error - watch Episode 65 for a complete explanation and the correct build sheet. ua-cam.com/video/ZsQzIyDg4vk/v-deo.html
Damn column shifter 😤😤😤😤
Beautiful Chevelle!
A absolutely beautiful car
70 is my favorite non Mopar vehicle, along with 67-69 Camaro
It's not a real LS6 unless Patrick Glenn Nichols say so.
Simply an amazing car! Flat out!
Almost, I want to look at this car with a leery eye and ask, "Really?", but stranger things have been found. So, I dunno. Nice car, definitely my favorite old Chevy.
Build sheet also shows M22 transmission. I think there are more than two questions.
Exactly! I have my doubts here... no cowl induction, bench seat, M22 but they show a column shift...
He said they accidentally showed the wrong build sheet and it was updated in a later video.
do yall have a "1971 ss 454 el camino
Did any of these '70 Chevelle's LS6 have A/C
No. Only the LS5 could be combined with air.
That's pitiful. Other 454 models & pickup trucks had A/C!
Solid lifter engines never had a/c
Way too much camshaft
The 70 Chevelle SS L-78 ,375 h.p.Wasn't Avail.W/ Fac.A/ C ,Either.
No cowl induction and hood pins nice straight ss
I still have my 2019 Chevy Silverado. Low miles, runs great. LOL
lozerboozer I still have my 2015 Chevy Silverado! I bought it brand new! I LOVE IT 🥰
Nice car, How about a Mopar Ball Stud Hemi car next? OK , A Max Wedge car would be fine.
If I had a car that nice, I could never enjoy it unless I knew that the world was going to end soon.
I was a little bit concerned about that battery--I don't think the factory battery could have lasted nearly half a century!
Back in the late 70s I know a guy that had one exactly like this, only his was auto and factory a/c.
Could not have been exactly like this because no such thing as an LS6 with air conditioning.
Copy from it for reference and build one like it with the wrong build sheet (VINYL TOP on bs) and grill SS emblem upside down) ???
How can it only have 32.miles?
and that's pushing it on and off the trailer, i would say no highway miles
On the hood they used a template and then finished it off by hand. The transition between the template and the hand painted part does not look right. I believe it was repainted
Since it was ordered without the cowl induction that means no stripes. They had to be ordered separately and maybe they forgot and dealer painted them. Wouldn't be the first time that happened.
Not even run in then ... does that leave this matching numbers, original engine and trans which were never run in, compromised??
If I had the money I would get one of those and it’s El Camino brother.
My favorite car
Hello what is that Chevelle ss is if yes sold have it you of other one in 454 LS6 of 70 has how much and deliver you in France?
I wish I had one ❤
I had one i bought in 77 and the stripes were wider.I read where the later 70 models had wider stripes is this true
Yes!
Funny now that you mention it that is why it looked funny to me as mine were wider too, mine was late in the year as I recall.
Maybe dealer painted these stripes on.
That build sheet obviously did not include the “ new car smell” lol.
Was the 454 LS6 underrated like many other GM engines?
Hell YES, same with Ford and Plymouth.
It is an interesting curiosity to be sure it's like an old pair of sneakers or a pair of trousers or flight jacket that you get that you were it was meant to be worn in for whatever reason it wasn't I had my old man watch this video and he was born 1950 and his best guesstimation on this particular Chevelle is the original owner had intended to convert it into a racing car like you said in the video sir but most likely he blew all of his Budget on acquiring the initial package the LS6 454 probably set the original owner back and then meant to come back to it one day and got distracted by life and other commitments and so she sat at least that's his best guess but I guess we'll never really know it's still sort of a disappointment that it never got driven like you said that's the great tragedy of that particular member of the genus but the fact that it survived and is preserved means now it can be used as reference if only it were stick shifter that would be the best thing but I've often thought it is strange that the great automakers never preserve a factory example of any of their vehicles from this era still impressive though Chevrolet for life
All that, in one sentence?
Ok so what's the price ???
I drove one in high school in 75. Mine had induction on it. They weren’t that big adeal. camaro or firebird tear me a new asshole
